Is Buenos Aires Safe In 2024? 

Nowadays we can say is safer than before, because we started to receive big waves of tourists. But what really has grown are homeless people sleeping on the streets.

Palermo is not the riches area of the city. It's just the hip area. Also it's not where traditionally rich porteños live, except for Palermo Chico or Avenida Libertador-Figueroa Alcorta area. The richest area traditionally is Recoleta and Retiro in the City. Also Belgrano C and Barrancas are richer and more traditionally upscale areas for porteños. I also have lived in many cities and I think the only real issue there is in Buenos Aires is pickpocketing. But as bad as in Barcelona, Paris or London. Not worse than that. You can also check real data which is "homicide rates" Buenos Airea is safer than in many American cities( Buenos Aires homicide rate is 5 per 100.000, Atlanta 17, Detroit 41 and Washington 40! Obviously there are neighborhoods you shouldn't go to, same thing happens everywhere in the West. What we were discussing with my partner las year when we were there for 3 months was that Argentineans have a lot of yellow media. And they tend to think they are the worst at everything. I think because they used to be even safer than now. We were shocked about how even in the gyms what was on TV was news 24hs repeating the same story and making it look much worse and sensationalizing it. In Europe even when there is a shooting ( for example last December there was one in Rotterdam) media shows little to none of it. In London you get robbed all the time but Argentines tend to think that never happens in Europe when it's super normal to be walking in the Soho and a person in a motorcycle just takes your phone from your hands.

I'm a woman always lived in Recoleta, Palermo, Retiro and I've never been afraid to walk alone at 3am or at any time. But I'm also aware of all the things I have to look out for.

If you come from New York and many big cosmopolitan cities, my friend, fear not, this will be paradise for you. Buenos Aires has very low crime rates, lower than many US cities. There are cases of insecurity ? of course, like any big city. The habits of Buenos Aires is to go out at night to consume, and you will see a lot of people everywhere, therefore it is more difficult to find serious cases of insecurity.

My fiancé lives in Parque Patricios in the south of the city. There are bad areas (villas) within 15-20 blocks, but his neighborhood is tranquil and safe. We’ve walked the dog at 3:30 am and never felt unsafe. We lock the door and leave valuables in the apartment-no reason to give a thief an easy target, but I feel far safer there than I do in any similar large US city.

Good video.. Im from a major US city with a lot of crime, I use same precautions there. Ive been all over SA, Argentina was great and I felt safe overall just using the common sense you presented. Basic crime awareness and you should be ok. Argentina and Uruguay were places I felt the most safe in SA. I lived in Colombia, never felt that safe there. Dont go to any place in SA with the "vacation mindset" Hawaiian shirt, white clothes, Rolex, etc.. You may be on vacation, but to the people there its just Tuesday.

I am Argentine and I have lived in Germany and now in the US for 7 years. While Germany is absolutely safe, I feel safer in Buenos Aires than in New York, San Francisco, New Orleans or LA. People have a very wrong idea about all Latin American countries being super dangerous and it irks me a little bit, cause the statistics in Argentina are comparable to those of the US, the difference is in the cues that warn you about danger,. Every country has different ones, but once you learn them, you pretty much know what and where to stay away from. Like you very well point out, in a country where being rich enough to be wearing a Rolex, Gucci clothes and the latest iPhone all the same time is rare, crime may not be super high, but you pretty much make sure that if it happens, it will happen to you because by going out like that you turned yourself into the most attractive target for the criminals. People should use common sense. And I am not denying that crime occurs in Argentina, but in global terms, it's not a dangerous place by any stretch of the imagination.

Good video - In terms of trying to avoid issues during the day, do you think having a camera out as you walk around is a bad thing? Kinda like "showing bling". I do street photography and would want to walk around and take photos throughout the city but dont of course want my camera swiped

The most ironic fact is that Palermo is one of the most insecure neighbourhoods in the city... I've lived in the city my whole life, 11 years in Caballito, 17 years in Palermo and 8 years in San Nicolas (Microcentro), and I've been robbed 2 times in Almagro, 6 times in Palermo, 3 in Belgrano, 1 time in Balvanera (Once) and 2 in Villa Soldati. The most violent were in Almagro, Villa Soldati, Palermo and Belgrano. I've been to the province several times, I love to go shopping to places people don't usually go, but I haven't been robbed in the province for some strange reason... Also I mostly stopped using the public transport in 2015, but before that I used to go by bicycle everywhere since 2015, and stopped using the subway in 2015. Pickpocketing in the subway and buses was a really exagerated thing when I used the public transport, you could have been travelling in a wagon full of pickpocketers... it was crazy. I used to carry a knife and a can of pepper spray to protect myself, I used the pepper spray 3 times and took out the knife 2 times to get away from thieves. Last time I travelled by bus was in 2011, I got to Villa Soldati, 8AM, Saturday, it was my birthday, I was going to the University, got off the bus just a block from the campus, got surrounded by 4 guys who beat me up pretty bad for more than a half hour, they took even my shoes. Then in 2015 I got to the subway to go to work, 2 stations before I got off a pair of thieves tried to surround me, took out my knife, one tried to get me from behind, I ended up sticking the knife in her arm, the other one tried to punch me, so I got the knife out and the woman started to bleed badly, and I sticked the knife in the side of the man's torax, it happened so fast, police was called, but before police showed up I punched the hell out of the male thieve, took out my knife and just got to the police, told him those 2 were trying to rob me and in the conmotion I just got off the subway station and got to my work place. I've never used the subway since. I've used the train system once in a while, but I've seen a lot of danger in some stations, I still carry a knife, a pepper spray and I also own a gun since 2022 after I almost got ambushed in a highway side street, hit an armed robber and full throttled my car to get away. Also Police in this country is shit, you could be being robbed in front of a police deputy and he/she will do nothing but look how you are being assaulted. I got in fist fights with police 4 times in my life, and the situations were the following, all in Palermo: - A police man trying to get a bribe from a drugstore for protection. - A police man that liberated a block to let a robber steal a bakery. - A police asking for my ID because I was filming how they were trying to bribe a locksmith. - A pair of police man and woman defending a drug delivery thingy near my parents home. Palermo looks safe, it is not. And be aware of police offices, in those blocks is where most of the crimes happen, it is a fact.

Same concerns as in the U.S. in any big city. Be aware of your surroundings and don't be dumb.

Im on airline website and made a comment that I would like to visit Buernos aires but as a solo female and retired. A little afraid! The response was positive! Many women had been to BA many times and loved it. It was highly recommended! Well, going to Rio beaches Oct and Nov this yr. Visa starts 2025 and a pain! Is it safe im retired airline. Thx

Good video! Yes the question about safety in South America always gets brought up! Gym observations: Guys in gyms in Europe and in South America say hello with peck on the cheek. Nothing the matter with it but just wouldn’t be accepted in USA. Women never miss leg day at the gym. Some even do legs every day they go to gym! If they have a trainer, then do full body!

I've been researching BA as I was planning to visit in October. I have, however, been hearing of the deep recession Argentina is going through and how the prices are really going up. Do you see the difference from your end since you are there now? Wondering if I should scrap my plans until it's more stable or continue on. It previously seemed hard to decipher what to do when paying and exchanging dollars (I'm from the USA) but now it sounds like things are even harder to figure out. Can you speak to this? Do you pay with cash, credit card and how do you exchange your currency? Thank you in advance for you attention to my questions. Looking forward to your responses.

Buenos Aires, Argentina is more friendly than Santiago, Chile in terms of prices, it's more cheap

Villa 31 isn't "one of the most notoriously unsafe", not by a long shot. It's, compared to others within the city, very organized and has lots of community resources and a proud identity. There are far worse places in terms of security (1-11-14 and neighbouring ones come to mind).

Keep away from the 'Conurbano' and the Villas outside Capital Federal. Hay que tener mucho ojo en las villas, nada de salir con joyas y nada de sacar el celular. Te afanan hasta los pantalones.

The Argentine media shows so much insecurity and repeats the same news many times that they have created the feeling that we are the most insecure country in the world. I am from a very quiet place in the province of Córdoba and I never dared to go to Buenos Aires. Due to the issue of insecurity, I did visit many other parts of the country, also the capital of Córdoba, which is no safer than Buenos Aires. In surveys of the perception of insecurity in Argentina, 80% of the population responded that it is very unsafe, in Colombia this percentage drops and 50% of Colombians said that they felt insecurity, while statistics show that the crime rate in Argentina is lower than Colombia.

its a bit more dangerous than just 'watch out for pickpocketing' etc, especially when street shops are closed, in particular Sunday mornings. but if you stroll in some chic area in Palermo, with your valuables home, of course, you won't know this.
