Is Buying an 8K Camera Overkill?

For regular content creation weekly, TOTALLY AGREE. However, for clients paying well for projects that take months in the editing room, the 6K and 8K pay off in amazing ways both with the end product and monetarily.

Nice! Yeah, the R5 C when rigged out honestly can impress a client, lol. Especially once you throw a bigger monitor on there. Also, in adobe premiere, by default, the RAW files (specially RAW, not XF-AVC) are set to CLOG2! While it does not offer the option in camera, it seems to be there in editing. I go back and forth between grading with CLOG2 or CLOG3 and they deliver such different results, it makes me think the CLOG2 is legitimately CLOG2. This is another bonus to filming in RAW on the R5 C. They are an amazing client to have access to. Especially with me living in Tallahassee, Florida where it is surprising a client this cool exist! The entire relationship started with me cold emailing them 10 years ago, showing them a couple of creative videos I had at the time, and telling them I wanted to make a video for them for free to broaden my portfolio.

I have Intel Core i9 13900K 3.0 GHz 68MB but the 265 8k is impossible to edit without proxies, 8k raw runs smooth tho, but what you are saying it’s supposed to run smooth with my intel?

@@KarlevidProductions Yes, to me 8k 24fps h265 422 10bit works smooth, but keep in mind that its 24fps because eos R5 doesn’t have 8k 60fps, only 24,25,30fps. Anyway works very good, smooth. Some notice: be sure your processor to be the K version not the KF because the KF version doesn’t have integrated graphics inside processor. And be sure the IGPU (internal graphics) are activated from bios. If the igpu it’s not activated, will not work good, actually will be totally inactive.

Actually I have the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-Core Processor on my main editing station. However, I also have a macbook pro. Not the most powerful one but nonetheless, I have not tried the H.265 on it. Maybe I will give it a whirl sometime. However, that RAW is just so glorious with the 12bit color. I don't have much reason to get H.265 to work. But I do think it is good to know if it does work for people who are looking at buying a different cam that doesn't offer 8K in a RAW format. Thanks for sharing you experience.

@@AshvonChamier amd doesn’t decode h265 422 10bit, only intel 12, 13, 14 gen and Apple m1/2. Like I said, my intel i9 12900k playback like butter 8k h265 422 10bit from canon R5, with color grading applied and in full resolution playback in premiere pro.

Wonderful. Thanks for letting me know you found the info valuable. I am using the AngelBird CF Type B Cards. I have two of their 1TB. Had an issue with one of the two when I first go them, returned/exchanged for another, no issue since. I mostly film in 8K Raw Lite on the R5C. My backup/subrecording SD cards are 128GB ProGrade SDXC. How much data come back with depends on the type of shoot. For live event filming for a whole day, I usually still don't surpass a 1TB CF card. If it is a controlled shoot where we are doing takes. Usually bring back somewhere between 300 - 5OOGB on the CF Cards and fill up 2-4 SD cards. I price dedicated hard drive space for my clients project into their project bid. For tax purposes, I list these drives as COST OF GOODS SOLD. While I don't give the clients the hard drives with all the footage, the footage will live on the drive for at least the next 3 years. This is good for if more edits are needed in the future. If they become a regular client, I will never delete the footage off of the drives. @@AshvonChamier Thanks for the additional info! So helpful! As a photographer, I can't imagine not shooting in RAW, but because of how large 8k footage ends up being I've been avoiding it. I recently purchased four 512GB AngelBird CF Type B cards and will purchase a few more SD cards to records proxies. Keep 'em coming!

Totally get it. The 8K cameras all offer great 4K filming options as well so it may still be something to consider when investing in the camera, that you are future proofed for when you eventually get a more powerful computer.
