@@RunNGunPhoto 100%. I'd argue that having a less capable camera is better while you're learning. You don't get bailed out by the advanced sensor or autofocus systems and need to work on composition and exposure rather than the ability to save the image in post.
the beautiful thing about cameras is if it took great images on release, it won't suddenly stop taking great images! This camera has taught me so much about the fundamental skills in photography.
Bought the 5D Mark II back in 2008 and it's still going strong in 2023. I almost upgraded to a Sony A7R V a couple of weeks back, but to be honest, I don't really need all that tech to take great photos. I shoot mainly landscapes, nature and models, nothing that really moves, I rarely use auto focus, only post max 4k photos to web and never print to paper. Wider dynamic range would be nice, but I always shoot raw and use several exposures when shooting landscapes anyway. I use the 5DII with a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II, Sigma 14 1.8 ART and a Sigma 50 1.4 ART. For me it makes way more sense to spend money on good glass than a new camera with features that won't make the photos any better. If I were to upgrade, it would be more for the 4K and 8K video capability.
I wouldn't go for 8k video.. even the legendary Arri Alexa is only 3.2k that gets upscaled to 4k. Quality over quantity. Go watch House, season six episode 21. Whole episode was shot on the 5D ii. 1080p is great. 4k is usually excessive unless you're a big production. Just know what you're doing with 180° shutter/2xFPS, and use ND if needed. Manual focus is what proper cinematographers use.
Yes A7rV does 4k, 8k….. so.. in your own words….. a reason to upgrade, but hey, I’m holding onto my dang T7i for beautiful photos so what can I say…. 😅Daily use/ Video I use a a7s3 & a7iv 💫‼️💯
I had a LOT of cameras, mostly expensive mirrorless since my 2009 Mark II but I always come back to it, it still takes the best pictures by far. It's the closest to 35mm film that I've ever found in the digital park. It's like there's a soul in this sensor, I can't explain it.
I absolutely agree that the sensor has some soul to it, that most other digital cameras just dont have! What do you primarily shoot with your 5D Mark ii?
@@RunNGunPhoto I like street photography, wandering in my hometown (Paris) mostly or on vacation. I like Doisneau, Cartier Bresson so the film look is very important for me. As I'm working on film stages, I try to take it with me. It's quite heavy, I look like a tourist sometimes lol, ..I tried compact cams for portability ( The Ricoh GR II was ok ) but I always come back to the Mark II. I use my Sony A7SIII sometimes but I keep it for short movies. It's a joke compared to the Mark II for photography. I tried a lot of mirorless cams but no one comes close, unless I'd come back to 35mm film but there's a limit to my passion ;))
Totally agree that some of these older cameras are still perfectly capable of great images (in the right hands). Having said that, if Canon releases an R5C-3PO, you better believe I’m buying it!
I think the older cameras have that special je ne sais quoi: that special "it" factor that newer cameras don't have. I've been loitering around my local camera store and have noticed a lot of film camera gear FLYING off the shelves lately. Perhaps we've made it to a point where those of us who see it as an art are getting too fed up with the AI look of the world and are yearning for simpler times.
I think you’re absolutely right Andy. As Tech progresses, many artists are regressing back to older tools. Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it was better craftsmanship of the tool itself.

I bought a 5D in 2008, and am now thinking I 'have' to upgrade to get back into better quality portrait photos (been a while). Your video had the EXACT advice I need. You have saved me a few thousand dollars! No need to buy another camera. Many thanks JT .. and I agree with you, I hate shooting vertically too!
Nah, no need to upgrade unless your gear is seriously holding you back creatively. The 5D Mark 2 can probably do just about everything you need it to! Absolutely keep it.
Oh my God 100%, the 5D series are iconic and changed everything for me. I seriously can't bring myself to sell my 5D3. Glad to see it getting love in '23 :)
I just inherited a 5D MK II from my late father. I've used a few Nikon DSLRs in the past but never took the time to master all of the features. Now I'm motivated to take my dad's camera and really learn how to use it. I'm looking forward to shooting landscapes and portraits this summer!
@@shaftdrive7567 I've got a tripod, camera bag, Cannon24-85mm and 70-300m lenses, batteries, and flash cards. This was a serious hobby for my dad. Now I just need time :-)
Totally agree! My daily carry is the 5D Mark IV, which I absolutely love. It really lets me get the images that I want. That said, there are times when I purposely take out the 5DM2. Same lenses. Same batteries. Same CF cards. Pull the body out of the bag, drop in a lens, and we're off... The beauty of the Mark II is that of simplicity: put ISO on auto and everything else in manual mode. If I'm really in the mood, pull out the manual focus primes and really go retro. It _forces_ my brain to slow down and contemplate what I'm about to do. I love that about this camera. The captures are spectacular, and any small bit of extra sensor noise is easily cleaned up using any one of half a dozen capable apps. The latest ACR has an absolutely killer noise reduction feature that is silky smooth without that gawdawful plastic-y look. It's still a wonderful camera in 2023 and will be so for many more years. Best! J
@@RunNGunPhotoI'm a beginner and I bought this used but in a excellent condition , now I still study the menu and it look simple , I'm using a 50mm 1.4 .and I hope is a good choice.
Still using my 5Dii and very happy without major let-downs. The only drawback is if I push seriously high ISO, then its a bit noisy in today's standards.... but it is still a very capable tool. Just look at the marvelous photos professionals took using this 5Dii when it was the go-to pro-tool. Proving that a skilled person can create magnificent workmanship with it. The camera has not deteriorated and got worse with time, it's still as good as it was when released.
hi. I wanna but mark 2 but I have only one worry. it is about autofocus. how good or how bad is that? I had Nikon d5100 (the equivalent of 600d and 650d on Canon side). I know everything is better in mark 2. But I only want to know that is mark 2 autofocus worse or better than d5100?
Totally agree! It’s not efficient to rely on this, but the new Lightroom Denoiser AI tool does a GREAT job at fixing where the Mii is weak in this specific issue. I can’t do this for every image, but when I have a few that are particularly noisy, it really helps me save the image without investing in a new camera for the time being. Eventually I’ll upgrade when I’m able, but love this fix for such an old camera.
@KristineTsui There are also tools like DxO Deepprime and Topaz AI. Thanks to these I can get great high iso images from my 7d, m10, or even my 5d mk iii.
Thank you for the video. I'm purely a hobbyist photographer. I own three iterations of the great legendary Canon 5D series, mark I, II and III. These workhorses will never get old to me. Shoot landscapes and street/lifestyle photos, sometimes wildlife too. Love shooting and shooting with them all the time everyday. Not into videos so, least bothered about that feature. Thanks again.
This was my first full-frame sensor camera. I bought it on my 40th anniversary as a professional photographer in 2011. I shot every day in 2012 for a gallery series, using Leica R prime lenses exclusively with adaptors. My main cameras today are a Lumix S1R and a Leica M-P240, however the Canon is still used extensively and the images are still superb. By the way, I had the incredible experience of attending workshop with Ansel in 1975 when I was in summer break from film school.
That's amazing that you were able to meet Ansel Adams! I'm very jealous! By the way, I'd love to try taking some images with Leica primes on my 5D MKII!
I found this video specifically because I was curious about the video quality. I have two full frame mirrorless cameras, one of which shoots 10 bit 4:2:2. And I’m shocked, SHOCKED by how good the video out of the 5D MK II looks! 😱I didn’t expect anything crappy, but MAN!!! I had no doubt that it would hold up decently for photo, but those video sequences really caught me off guard. Thanks for sharing man.
Spoke to a canon rep at a photography show here in the uk a few weeks ago, he said as of 2020, the 5 d mk2 is responsible for more images published in magazines and books than all the other cameras (available at the time) combined. The close second place was the Nikon f2 then a hasslblad.
I've never been an expert on photography, but the 5D has always felt to me like a flagship camera - not just a flagship Canon camera, but a flagship in the entire DSLR space. Like, if someone has a 5D, they must be a superb photographer. Even though I know "better gear" doesn't make a better photographer, that's how the 5D has always seemed to me. Now I'm tentatively interested in photographing some sports, and I'm already looking at cameras at a local camera store. I don't think I can affort the latest version of 5D, but luckily they're selling a used Mark 2 at a very affordable price, so your words of encouragement concerning an older model are very valuable! It would be so cool to finally own a camera that I've always looked up to.
The 5D Mark 2 will always take great images in the hands of a good photographer. I think it's definitely worth looking into to sharpen your skill. Having auto-everything on the newer cameras doesn't help us grow as photographers.
Thanks for confirming the same questions I made to myself . I have a Mark 2 that have been collecting dust. Been getting back to my photography just recently, and wondering quite a bit about the R or RP. This made my decision clear; sticking with the classic!
That awesome to hear Christian! I tried the Canon R as well when it was released, and was a bit disappointed. That's why I've hung onto my 5d mark ii for so darn long!
I’m a Sony shooter and have invested my collection into it but I used my friends canon t2i and I fell in love with the sound and feel. I want to get one just to take casual photos with.
@@RunNGunPhoto Yo have any videos with using vintage glass? I'll post some when I get back in town. I like to also bake in a look (stylized color profiles ALL over interwebs)..with the two combined and a ND+ 1/4 Mist..wheew..stunning!
I'm currently shooting the Canon EOS RP. It's a good piece of camera but I've been really considering going backwards and picking up a 5DMK2 because they're so inexpensive. I compared the two cameras on DP review and the RP only beats it in a couple of specs (that aren't important enough for me to matter) Thanks for making this video. I also followed you on Instagram. You do good work, keep it up!
7/7/2023, I ordered 5d mark II from Roberts, my first digital camera. Also ordered 85mm 1.4; hoping I can do great things with this. Thanks for your video. Martin
Thank you, lookiing forward to learning a lot; I suspect my eyes cannot handle the strain of using mirrorless EVF. I am grateful to RU-vid University assisting me!
Great stuff! I just finished shooting an event today with my trusty 5D mkii. It was super dark in places so I had to crank that ISO to H1(12800) at times to expose the image correctly. I agree that the high ISO gets quite noisy on the 5D mkii sensor but with Lightroom's new denoise AI feature it make this camera clean shooting up to H1 even H2 today! I'm impressed that AI today can turn a 15 year old camera's RAW file into something (close to) on par with cameras today! Though I do miss the new focusing systems for moving subjects. Long live the 5D mkii!

My 5d mk2 has nearly 500k shutter clicks and still going strong genuinely the best camera I’ve ever owned. Went through a phase where I was buying newer cameras like the Sony A7 series and some Panasonic ones… it’s just not the same seriously they just don’t compare to a canon 5d series regardless which 5d, even the classic is still amazing today
For me photography was the main profession for 20 years. Two years ago, I finally retired from the industry, having sold most of the equipment. I left myself a Canon 5d mk2 and some lenses (Canon EF 35mm f1.4 L, Canon 90mm f2.8 TS, Canon 17-40 f4 L, Canon 15mm f2.8 fisheye). And for my collection of manual optics from Nikkor (50mm f1.4, 24mm f2.8, 300mm f4), I bought a Sony a5000 for a penny. Most of the time I take photos on my Pixel 6 pro. But sometimes I take the cameras off the shelf when I want something more than the phone camera can give. And both cameras still makes me happy :) I have a desire to buy something more modern (maybe it should be Canon R and Sony a7lll), but so far I see no significant reason to spend around 3000 euros on this toys.
sorry i'm pretty new to the subject and I would like to get more into photography, about the pixel 6 pro, is the quality comparable (genuine ignorant question) like can you compare mkii to a phone quality nowadays?
Hi Rúben, not a bad question at all. The Canon 5D Mkii give you far better results than even the newest phone camera. The ability to change lenses (use telephoto zooms), real RAW capture, resolution, etc.
@@RunNGunPhoto oh really? that's actually pretty interesting to hear, i've been seeing many samples all over many websites and i was trying to make a comparison to nowadays smartphones what about the M50? I just found out the M50 might be a better option (even tho it's a bit costier) than the 5D Mark II, any opinions you can help regarding with that?
That camera revolutionised the low budget video film making and allowed to do cinematic scenes. I fall in love with its cinematic videos instantly and bought one in Aug 2009 with my credit card, as I had no money. I have done really amazing videos and photos with that camera… it is a huge value for money and still my only camera.
3:16 this talk really settled me down... ive recently been hired by a photo studio with a lot of new equipment to use, canon Rs and Sonys Alpha cameras, and that is what ive been using to shot... ive had a basic crop sensor camera and was desperate for a full frame sensor... i was aiming for the Sony A7SIII but it is still so expensive... and was considering the 5d mark ii for a long time but hasitated to get one because of the auto focus tech and slower image processing... my head was way too deep in this place instead of focusing in my own jorney to become a true professional photographer, and what you said there was what i needed to hear. Thank you!
Happy to help! You don't need the newest tech to take amazing photos. Sorry I missed this commend, but I appreciate you watching and letting me know your thoughts!
@@RunNGunPhoto Little Update! I did get the 5D Mark II for a reasonable price! It is such a solid camera, i shot all kinds of events with it, it is so easy o set color profiles and the sensor is massive, the quality and resolution is gorgeous! and the best part is that... yes the auto focus kind of suck and it is slow, does not work well at low light so... i just practiced manual focusing and it is what ive been using, its quite nice to not depend on auto focus to take pictures, just like the 35mm film set ups it is quite a connection you develop with the camera and lens, and doing it for a few months I just got used to it and developed a feel for manual focusing! Since i dont shot sports or wild life, i dont miss it that much! i have a not so good lens for it, next step is putting money into lens so when i update the body i will already have nice sharp lens :D I feel like the camera want to take better pictures but the lens are so cheap and you can clearly see its not sharp enough for the sensor :P Anyway! Thank you! Cheers! :D
I sold ALL my Canon stuff -- bought a "Used" 5D Mark II for $450.00 and put my money into "L" glass. I can make it "sing" as I know this camera so well. It's about knowing your camera's capabilities more than having the latest/greatest and not using more than 20% of its capabilities.
I bought mine in 2009, and it’s still going strong. I’ll ride that train until the line ends. We have the latest SONY cams at my work, but I still prefer using the Mark II. I know that camera in and out.
That's one of the things I truly enjoy about the 5D Mark II. Menus were a lot less complicated back then. Give me the basic functions to take a photo and I'm good to go!
As a novice photographer I'm going to pick this one up. I would like to use is as my best camera kinda thing. But right now I'm using the Cannon T5i and it's fantastic. It's my main camera for now but I would like to get one that's more capable and can be functional in harsh weather like rain and cold. Thanks for this video and happy shooting. :3
Just picked up a 5d mk2 and had memory card in it was last used 2004 😍, checked shutter count and just over 8k Awesome bit of kit for the money I paid I love it

Cool video, been considering picking up a full frame camera but don't want to invest thousands of £ in something just yet. Canon 5D Mk II was iconic when I was getting started. I run a Nikon at the moment, so being able to pick up a 5D and some relatively cheap lenses to experiment would be really cool.
The first camera to shoot The President of the United states of the time. My first FF camera also, and is still my main camera to today. Im in the works for r5c and a r5 but as of now this is my tool of use. 21mp is more than enough even the 1DX has a 21mp, its the pictures not the camera so much. Yup Ansel Adams is still going even stronger today then when he did it. edit, one thing i can say is that this camera and the original 5d has teached me not to hope a shot is in focus or wasting useless rapid shots in hope of, this camera has helped me to really be educated in what I do to get the results im after with not much handed to me. Today its all about ai and auto drive for just about everything, its great to have updated tools but this camera is real camera not a ai computer. great video man.
Been a Nikon user for over 45 years, still am. But one day at a savers thrift store I found a 5D Mark II for $65.00!! It looked clean but used had nothing with it so I took a chance and took it home. Bought a battery/charger and I had a Ultrasonic 50mm f1.8 Canon lens in my pile of lenses I buy. And sure enough it fired right up and works perfect to this day. The lush smoky brothy colors was what blew me away, I had it up and running right around Fall of 2022. Taking it out today for some fall foliage shots.
Is ot a good idea for people with no photography skills start out with this camera? Only reason I ask is because I saw a good deal with price similar to the entry level cameras.
As someone who buys used Canon cameras more than most I would say that the 5D Mk2 and the 6D mk1 are the best bang-for-the-buck cameras out there. The Mk3 crosses into a price point where I'd start to look at the R series, and the Mk4, despite being a professional tool, was a stop-gap before the R series launched. I have a 5D mk1 (among other things) and I think you need to love the idea of owning the "Classic" to buy one, it's a bona-fide classic, produces beautiful images, but was never the finished article. I love it so that's OK. The Mk2 is the finished article and has everything you need. It's a Pro camera for peanuts money. I still prefer the 6D to carry and use, and consider it the most underrated camera in history, but it's not truly "professional" in a couple of ways, like the 5D2. LOOK ...... You can buy a 5D, 5D2 and 6D for about $900 for the three. That's the same as a modern phone, so it's not like you really need to choose.
I'm not a pro and i had a 2nd hand Rebel Xt for a while... and then the 5D mkII came's out. I had that beast with the 24-70 L 2.8 and then with the 70-200 2.8 IS and the 100 L Macro (a f**ink laser this one!). Yeah - i have to admit - i missed the video autofocus a lot but this forced me to learn the video manual focus (with those thingy wrapped around the focus gear). So now... i'm still using the 5D mkII for my "wanna be" photos and videos and NOW - that the EF lens market is slowly fading out - i can get some of the best L prime and zoom lenses in the second hand market for a half or a third of the original price... all the lenses that i can't afford before! So... W the 5D mkII!
Came here to learn about the Mark II (because I'm not sure yet about spending the $$ on a III or IV)...stayed because I just realized you're a fellow Michigan man. Ayoooooooo
Really considering picking one up. I've been wanting to shoot a DSLR again, and I only currently have some older cameras that are four thirds or aps-c sized. This would be an inexpensive way to get a relatively modern sensor, and take advantage of the lenses I use for my EOS-3
To be fair, Ansel was shooting on 4x5 and 8x10 sheet film which is way larger and has infinite more resolution than any sensor today. But yes, he was an amazing photographer and when you look at his photos from camera to camera. They are amazing.
many thanks for this great presentation of this oldy and goldy camera, sure is a great camera to start with and it does take great pictures and video, my regards from Europe Greece.
I couldn't agree anymore with all you said here and yes, I'm one of those who placed my deposit 6 months ahead of time with BH to get my 5D MKII as the first batch of American, and boy how proud was I... Still, get the feeling when I carry her around... and TG I resisted the impulse to sell it long back, though I could save a lot of money. After all, there are things in life that nothing else can bring to you...
I just got a used 5D MK2 for 180 USD. I have only full frame lenses, exept from one for my EOS M. I have used the MK2 for years. And I have missed it!! And as you say, the cameras does not degrade over the years, they work or they don't. :)
The thing I love about the 5D mark ii/iii, is how the photos it takes look almost fake. I've been trying to get that look for awhile and finally found it.
Actually the original Leica M9 sensors did “rot” or corrode over time. Sad news for those who spent a ton on them. But thats the only camera I know where the sensor degraded over time.
2 weeks ago I got a 5d classic and I have yet to make a test drive with it. And today, I got a Mk2 just because of the reputation alone. No regrets No surrender.
Great video! I am a hobby photographer and still use my 5D mark ii. I have taken more than 120,000 photos and feel that it has done the job and that the "automatic" is not as good as it was before. I take photos mostly in aperture mode. Maybe I will buy an R6 Mark II to replace the old 5D, but I hesitate because of the high cost. I do photos for a newspaper and take all sorts of photos.
@@RunNGunPhoto Thank you! I have loved my camera since I bought it in 2010. The lenses I use are the kit lens EF 24-105 mm IS USM and the 70-200 mm IS II USM. In one special situation when I take photos of people in big meetings and they hold the microphone up in front of the mouth, the photo is sharp on the microphone, but not their eyes. That is quite annoying. I use spot measurement and focus on their eyes and forehead and try different apertures before I succeed. Overall I am very pleased with my 5D mark II.
Older Canon DSLR's are amazing. I shoot the 6D 1, and the 5D classic. I also shoot a Nikon D810. I do get some great birds inn flight with all these old cameras.
I don't know if I am crazy in the head, BUT... I had the 550D since it released then bought the 5D Mark II NEW, less than 1000 shutter count. Then I bought the R5C (which is insane) but here is the catch... I prefer the photos taken with the 5D Mark II. The way it looks, color and detail is just so much more 'better'. Not in resolution but just 'better'. I don't know how to explain it.
What do you think about the 5D Mark IV comparing it to the 5D Mark II? Does it have the same feel to it? Reason for watching your vid, great vid btw, was installing Magic Lantern to play around with the 5D Mark II's video mode. Wondering what's possible to get out of it. Nowadays where resolution doesn't matter and even applications such as Dehancer exist I think it's intriguing what 'feel' the 5D Mark II video gives.
@pr1sm55 I have limited experience with the Mark IV. I wasn’t a huge fan though. Everyone I know who has owned one, has since sold theirs. They weren't highly impressed.
I picked up one of these used for a good price, and added a 50mm f1.8 lens which i use for portrait photography. I had to replace the rubber covers on the left side of the camera, as they had rotted. The replacements were just cheap eBay things - not canon spares and they don't fit perfectly but they do the job. I also had to source a battery cover, as this one didn't have a cover. Same story, not a canon part and not a perfect fit but does the job. Probably not good enough for a pro, but I'm an occasional hobby photographer. Otherwise I can't complain about the camera, it feels solid and tough and I am amazed at the quality of the images I am able to get. I did my research before buying and I suggest the same for any beginner, but the best advice I had was to spend your money on lenses not the camera. Ans if you're aiming to be a pro ( Im not ) spend some money on tuition. Thanks for the video!

I use Nikon cameras , including an F2 for film , and a D810 digital . Were I starting again , I'd keep the F2 definitely , but use Canon for digital work . This is totally because the rubber body work on Nikon digital cameras peels off ! As far as I know , Canon do not have this problem . As for the Canon 5D Mk2 , it looks the business and has quality in its images to back it up . 21 megapixels is more than enough for this , combined with good lenses .
Ansel had a little 110mm film camera inside the large format camera. His lab technique was great. Nobody knows this little secret. All jokes aside, he never talked about bokeh and all that crap. He based his great work on three points: Composition, Exposition & lab work. Well, he also had a burro to carry his heavy equipment, and at times, the burro gave him some little tips. This data comes from The Burro Journals.
@@RunNGunPhoto I was appealing to your educated sense of humour. I unequivocally agree with you about how technology became technocracy. We are jumping, starving & marvelling at every new camera model that hits the market, like children in a chocolate factory. When I was obliged to switch from negative to digital, I bought my first Canon: The Powershot A620. 7 megapixels... And I left, in 2008 for what was my last trip to the Canyon Lands, Old 66, etc. That little sucker really delivered the goodies!!! Look here, back home I edited my choice of images...on Picasa3... We are talking Paleolithic here. They look so beautiful on my screen. For two main reasons: My souvenirs, and digital photography wasn't as complicated as it is nowadays. Most people are buying cameras to be seen with. Instant legends. Classics before they are made. We are all victims of our own device (Hotel California) Keep on sharing.
It has 21mega pixels, full frame, high ISO range, EF Lenses, fast shutter, accurate auto focus, batteries that last months = everything you need to capture light.
I love my two Mark II's!!! They say its a beginner/intermediate camera, but in all reality, I still see a lot of pros holding onto this. I like it simply because it has that "filmlike" look. It is IMO that a lot of the hype around equipment is doing photography a disservice. People get marketed this late and great thing, and in reality, a camera and lens are a tool and their quality is determined by the hands and brain behind them.
I agree 100%! I absolutely use it professionally, and I know a ton of other photogs who still do as well. I agree there is a film-like look, that I haven't gotten from any other camera yet.
@@RunNGunPhoto Not even the Mark III or IV. Which is perhaps for the better since the price climb on both is simply that. A price climb. IMO the only weakness is its data transfer. I like being able to use wifi to transfer files, and the cf card is notoriously moody. I took out the data card and lost everything once. since then I've simply resorted to usb line in from camera to the computer and am too scared to do anything else
Perfectly good full frame camera for still photography, like you I bought mine when it was first released, I also use mine to capture RAW 14 bit video using Magic Lantern, amazing for processing in Davivci Resolce
