Olivia and Nathan here! Is Cape Town safe for tourists? The number one question and concern for people looking to visit Cape Town in 2023 is how safe is it really? Is Cape Town still as dangerous as they say it is, especially after being named one of the most dangerous cities in the world? Here's a window into our experience there and our best attempt at answering that question.

Ubuntu is one of South Africa's greatest exports. It has several meanings, but generally something like this: "I am because we are" or "it takes a village to raise a child". It's basically about individual effort and collective responsibility. As South Africans watching this video, we would do well to remember Ubuntu and put it into action every day. I loved what the guide said about us not being defined by past events. He was very gracious and that's a lesson for us all.

Thank you so much for letting the world know that my city Cape Town is not so bad after all. We South Africans are a resilient nation and we know how to unite when need to. I know apartheid as I was a high school kid who in 1976 protested for our freedom as non white South Africans. We still have a long way to go and I believe we will overcome our past. Once again thank you for your honest view of our city we Capetonians our very proud of our city

amen, we are not represented what happened during apartheid. we are good people, I have nothing but love for my fellow south africans and even though we still struggle with so much racism here, we are still surviving and those of us on the ground are not represented from our politics and corruption, we are represented by the unity we give to each other.

I appreciate you have to consider your safety. However, I stayed in the CBD Upper Long Street for two weeks as a solo middle-aged traveller in late 2022. Had a great time. Got to know the locals. Hung out, made many friends that I'm still in contact with. Did activities too numerous to mention and smoked things that I shouldn't mention. I'll be back for sure! I must say that the infrastructure for the many tourist activities is of the highest order in terms of organisation, safety and friendliness. The Cape is still a top rank tourist destination.

This has been the best video I've seen explaining the foreigner's view of our City of Cape Town. It encapsulates a lot of what the community is going through, the challenges, but also the hope and friendliest people on the planet. Thanks for showing the juxtaposition of the fearmongering and the actuality. Yes, here are major issues, but Cape Townians, more so than most, are trying to help in building a better life for (even many of the super wealthy you mentioned).

Proud to say I live in the most beautiful part of the Western Cape (Winelands) near Cape Town. However, I will not travel on the N1 highway after dark and counted my security gates inside and around my house: 11. We live in walled houses with our dogs sleeping close by inside the house - for fear of poisoning. With rising numbers of unemployment, people resort to rubbishbin - picking and crime. My girls work in 2 different countries overseas- and I prefer it that way..

I'm from the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town and was born and bred here. We still have the safety of walking in our neighborhoods at night that's how safe it is. The problem are gang areas like the Cape Flats and townships. Where people (gangsters and other criminals) don't care much for their community and the people living in it. Cape Town for the most part have awesome and friendly people. Just stay out of the Townships and Cape Flats and you will be fine.

Highly recommend this video. Honest assessment of Cape Town Well researched. The good, the bad and the ugly. But in general, the country and people on the mend and improving, despite the many challenges. Vibrant, beautiful, happy, caring and fun loving as long as one stays away from the complainers and moaners who thought apartheid was good. Also there is the factor of the young crowd, who, like the young anywhere in the world who dont live in the past, who add the "Ubuntu factor", of forward looking and hopeful individuals, who bring a sense of positivity to balance out the doom and gloom "apartheid lovers," thankfully on the decline.. However the secret to Cape Town and South Africa, is a sense of humour. Every hardship is an opportunity to make fun of, joke about , laugh at oneself and the world at large. South Africa a resilient hopeful country prepared to survive anything, or die laughing in the attempt.

I‘ve lived in an English language school there for 1 month and after that returned several times to Cpt. One thing is… even in the day in areas like sea point, the mainstreets are fine but small side streets are to avoid. Situations can quickly escalate even in the day… i witnessed a knifefight in sea point on the main road at day and we needed to go into a shop which the security closed from outside so the people can be safe… At night Cpt is on another level. Even taxis ordered by restaurants cant be trusted. They sometimes drive you to a quiet road and rob you. That happened several times. One of my language school friend was shoot in the day in Joburg. Cpt is beautyfull, stunning, people are friendly but dont be naive. If situations escalate.. they escalate quickly. And dont trust on the police there.

Yes, its safe if you use common sense and stay within typical tourist areas and avoid loitering around liquor stores and places where drug addicts might congregate. Capetown for the typical tourist is safe, fun, and well worth the visit. The developed area extends completely around table mountain and includes the very high end beach towns along its eastern shores. For Africa novices a great urbanized/European introduction to the continent. But certainly you will not linger there too long as there is the real Africa that just begins with the sojourns to its north. It will be an exciting fun revelation every step of the way. Safety also requires using common sense assumptions wrt to what their laws are likely to be, you do not want to be detained on your travels due to those types of careless decisions.

I’m seeing some crazy protests in Paris right now, most of Israel as well, but I have enough common sense to know that’s not what Paris or Israel is all about, also I don’t think New York, Milan, Miami… are 100% safe everywhere you go, we where is Paris two years ago and there are areas your shouldn’t go to, it’s common sense, I don’t think Skid Row is the total sum of what Los Angeles is, I think crime in South Africa is click bait and I’m disappointed that you guys felt the need to do this video, I couldn’t finish it by the way, I enjoy most of your content by the way.

You also use a lot of images of riots/looting that happened in July 2021, most of is not of cape town, i see some images fro Durban during that event, it would be highly unlikely that you would do a review of Vancouver and use the 1994 Vancouver Stanley Cup riots, 95% of the crime in cape town happen in Khayelitsha, Mfuleni, Kraaifontein, Delft, Nyanga, Gugulethu, Harare, Philippi East, Samora Machel and Mitchell's Plain, none of those places you went to even accompanied by a guide. Taxi's, unfortunately that how people is South Africa get around and I don't think they posed a danger to you at anytime, just like Bali has a lot of scooters.

whats been done to demolish these townships and build attractive social housing to replace these townships please answer this question
@Zangettsu_ZA
@Zangettsu_ZA 2 дня назад
There are loads of these developments taking place. The problem is that the Western Cape is by far the best run province in SA. This causes an exodus of people from the poorly run provinces to flock here. With the property prices also being much higher than any other province, people take part in illegal land grabs and just build shacks everywhere. This is a massive problem as there is no town planning process that is followed. So these shacks don't have electricity, water or sewerage. The City of Cape Town municipality tries its best to keep up, but it is completely uncontrolled as people are free to move as they please.
@chrisbennett6260

well petition the goverment to enforce the law and crack down on these activites impinging on the western cape simple you stii havent answered why these township shacks vestige from the apartheid days have not been demolished and replaced with asthetically architecturally pleasing social council housing with adjacent green parks ,gardens, leisure facilities , thats a bloody disgrace and there no excuse why havent they all been replaced ,and what are you going to be done about ,what are you doing about it ?@@Zangettsu_ZA

(not CT but still SA) i was in JHB visiting family and friends for 4 days, staying at an airbnb in northriding, on the 4th day at 02:30am they tried cutting through the burglar bars to get into our accommodation. If I hadn't been awoken by the noise of the bars being cut, my wife and i would have been faced with "intruders" in our airbnb and a VERY high chance of being killed..... on my previous trip to JHB, staying near northgate, they stole 30 meters of electrical cable out of the ground outside the property where the airbnb was.... it's funny how, after 30 years of ANC in power, people still whine about 'apartheid', yet NEVER mention the 3 trillion rand stolen by the ANC and the huge unemployment rate that went from 15% in 1994 to over 55% now..... at what point do black people ACTUALLY start taking responsibility..??????

Its not only that, the population has skyrocketed in the past 30 years. South Africa has to deal with its own problems from systemic racial division, with the intent of not developing the non-white areas to keep the population uneducated, trapped in gang wars etc. Add all the migrants coming to South Africa for a chance at a better life Then you add corruption Its a recipe for disaster
@lucyjuicy2657
@lucyjuicy2657 6 месяцев назад
U are clearly a racist from the last part of your comment. White people own 80% of this country's wealth. How is this country supposed to grow if the rand is being manipulated by white people colluding with the west to assure the failure of the government and the disposition of the POC citizens. Yes there is corruption, but corruption is in every government in the world. even the DA managing Cape Town is currently in court due to corruption. Yes corruption should not be a factor, but the white government took all the wealth with them when apartheid ended and kept control of the economy. Black people are charged higher interest rates because of the rand manipulation currently being investigated. before you talk through your neck about what your racist family told you, look at things with an unbiased viewpoint instead of exercising your white supremacy colonist mindset because we don't have time for your kind here. DEAL WITH THE FACT THAT COLONIZATION AND APARTHEID IS OVER!!!!!!! YOU SHOULD HEAL, BECAUSE NO WHITE MAN WILL EVER BE PRESIDENT OF THIS COUNTRY AGAIN. THANK GOD YOU LEFT!

Thanks to the cANCer who shipped hundreds of thousands of their voters into the city for the vote on the province. One they bussed them there and the vote done (obviously lost) they just left them there. 30 plus years later we have sprawling shanty townships everywhere and obviously an influx of criminal activity. The cANCer also opened the borders of SA 30 years ago and an influx of people from all over Africa came to SA! The rest is obvious!!!!
