Is Ceramic Window Tint Worth The Extra Cost?

A window tint update video. I cover the 3M Ceramic IR Series and compare it to the Color Stable in this non-scientific test.
I realize this isn’t a completely accurate way to measure, however. The heat on the door cards was pretty obvious which tint rejected heat more.

Another way to measure out the temp in the interior is just to do a temperature probe set up on the center armrest. That way you can see what the interior air feels like versus just the seats.

I'd say 20% in Southern states is reasonable. (though with 35% ceramic tint, you'll get better heat reduction than normal 20% tint). But in Northern states, you are much better off getting 35% tint. You don't have as much sun, and its not as strong. Secondly, really dark tint can be a cop magnet. I've had 35% tint on my 2004 Solara and 2006 ES350 for years, and never had any issues with cops. But they look sharp, and the bonus is that I can see outside at night, no impairment in night vision, or seeing my side mirrors.

Recommended tint percentages: Mom level tint-20% all around Dark but never pulled over- 5% rears, 20% front Perfect dark but chance of getting pulled over (what i’m running and have been stopped once) - 5% rear, 20% fronts, 35% front windshield. PS if your thinking about windshield tint and want privacy do 35%. The 50% is nice for heat but will not be anywhere close to enough darkness for any sort of privacy reasons (I drive a 2017 BMW 330i and have my tint dark because it’s extremely loud and looks very aggressive so I get a lot of stares lol)

Good video comparison, Edward! I just had my X5m tinted yesterday. Went with Xpel XR plus. I prefer a lighter “smoked” look so went with 30% on front sides, 70% on WS, and 55% over the rear stock privacy glass. I almost went F1 stratos but didn’t like the slight bluish hue for the WS, since my car is black. On your M3 it looks great!

How long did you wait to test temperature? The window tint reduces the amount of heat transmitted, but that really just slows the heating of the car, it does not limit the interior temperature . If you let any car with any tint sit outside they will all get hot.

It's hard to try and measure tint temps when the car is just baking in the sun. Ceramic will slow down the transfer of heat coming in to the vehicle but if your car sits at work all day in the sun yes it gets very hot. If the heat is removed from the vehicle and it's fully tinted in Ceramic you will notice it will stay cooler vs a car that has carbon because it will be passing more heat through the carbon film. You won't have to have the AC blasting as much to keep a vehicle cool with ceramic film. Also your skin and interior parts will remain cooler over a carbon or dyed film.

interesting and enjoyable video .. cheers. The scientist in me wants to point out a couple of things, even though it's an old video now and the guy did say he knows it wasn't done very "accurate". I think he meant to say it wasn't done very "precise" i.e. comparing the results in each car may not have been a true reflection of the actual because of the many variables and inconsistencies introduced in his experiment. We don't know how "accurate" his meter was because it wasn't calibrated, but probably +/- 5% at a guess for everything he measured. Measuring the temperature surfaces in each car made it hard to compare the results, because the shape, position, colour, thickness, coating etc. and what it's actually made of will all impact the temperature of the surface almost as much as the amount of heat getting through the windows, especially if the difference between the amount getting through is only a few degrees. Where and how your cars were parked, in relation to the sun position, the other car,, the garden bed, the road etc introduced many uncontrolled variables. Ambient temperature is really what you wanted to measure because that's what we all feel i.e. the air temperature inside the car. I think all things being equal it was a good video though, and reflected (pun intended) a reliable outcome, albeit not that "precise".

Really liked the video but for someone in Canada, sun is nowhere near the same isssue as the southern states. Additionally, I believe that due to the sun, it’s much less apparent how dark they really are. In northern states/ Canada I’d be aware that the dark tint will look much darker more often. I used to have 15% in my old Benz and it was a cop magnet. On Friday I’m taking the E550 coupe for a full car tint, debating 35% or 20% but leaning towards 20.

that car at the beginning is absolutely beautiful. The exterior temperature could be inversely proportional to the interior temperature depending on the percent and type of tint. At least that argument could be made. I would think the way to do that experiment would be all at the same time with wooden crates and glass with each type of tint and a thermometer in each crate.

@aussiesurfer805
@aussiesurfer805 5 месяцев назад
@PeterJames143 I know it's been a year since your comment, so hopefully you've now learnt what "inversely proportional" means, because you most certainly cannot say (or even make the argument) that the exterior temp is inversely proportional to the interior temp. The inside and outside temps both went up (so they're not inversed) and they didn't go up at the same rate or equal factor of a rate, so they're not proportional either. So in fact, the inside outside temp relationship is "directly disproportional" and that's something I would argue about. Sorry, but I'd hate for you to go through life using the term incorrectly... somebody had to tell you, and better me then embarrassing yourself in front of bunch of good looking smart mean girls... imagine that ... crikey

While the vehicles may be different, the glass construction is the same. Same year model year, same M variant, and very similar merino leather. The interior space is different, I agree, but in the end, I took the heat from the door card itself, where the sun was directly hitting since interior heat can vary. Even sitting inside and having the sun shooting your face through the glass, there’s a notable difference with ceramic film. I implied in my video and the description that it's non-scientific, but I attempted it the best way possible with the tools I had on hand.

@eddiemcars

@@cleanearth no problem. Perhaps I didn’t explain it correctly in the video. I let both cars sit outside for an hour right when the glass begins to heat up. My thought was any more than that, becomes a wash and hot car becomes a hot car. I found the best result shooting at glass from the inside and hitting the dashboard and upper door cards. I got the same result on the dash, but it’s expected considering both cars have same ceramic film on the windshield. The door cards is where I noticed the difference in temperature since the side films vary and the challenge was showing what I physically feel on my skin sitting inside.

Temp gun doesn't work to well on reflective surfaces. It will end up reading what it the reflection sees. such as you or a different surface

Yeah probably not the most scientific way. I tried with a temp strip recently on the glass and it didn’t work well either.

I wanna get my Jeep Grand Cherokee tinted … but I’m scared imma get pulled over too much. Would 20% be too dark on side windows ?
@eddiemcars
@eddiemcars 2 года назад
It depends on where you live and how aggressive the cops want to be with enforcing it. Usually, it’s a ticket IF they choose to stop you, but the majority of them won’t go out of their way for it. Ohio is the only state I’ve lived in where they will take out a light meter and measure the tint. (50% max is allowed on the front) Here in California, where no tint is allowed on the front side windows, they don’t seem to bother. For a Grand Cherokee, the rear is tinted already from the factory, so 20% front side will nearly match the rear glass with the front appearing slightly lighter from certain angles because of the clear windshield. My personal opinion is that you’ll be OK with 20% on the front sides.

I had 15% on my old car and got pulled over multiple times for my tint. I also had a smoked license plate cover too which I did end up taking off. I mostly got warnings and the couple of times I got actual tickets, I just lied (lol) and said I removed the tint and the judge reduced the fine. A tip I got from a friend with 5% tint is to open your sunshade if a cop is nearby or at night, turn on a dome light just so they can see who’s in the car.

funny how I always hear about a bunch of "feel" type explanations but NEVER anything scientific to backup the remarks. 25% tint is probably so much better than no tint obviously but 25% ceramic tint at a markup? Who knows until someone actually puts a level of scientific measurement to it. Until then. I'd go with the cheapest stuff with a good install(or intall warranty) and try to park in the shade too.

Just keep in mind, any amount of tinting on the windshield is illegal in almost all states. It is illegal in California, and it appears that he's in California...
@eddiemcars
@eddiemcars 2 года назад
As of 2022, California has a VLT limit of 70% for windshield and front side windows, which is what I did for the front windshield. No limit on how dark the rear side and rear glass. The only thing I’m illegal on is the front side windows. Would I get pulled over for it? Maybe. But I can also get pulled over for failure to use turn signals so there’s that.

@eddiemcars
@eddiemcars 2 года назад
Black on black? 20% will appear darker because there isn’t contrast with the seats. With that being said, I would still get 20% unless you want some interior showing through during the day. At night, 20 or 30 will still appear pretty dark.

Most states don't allow dark tint or even tint for that matter whether it's liberal or republican. It all comes down to the cops in the state and also how many other people got there cars tinted. Where I live nearly everyone has tinted windows and cops don't care one bit.

@eddiemcars

They have law limits like every state on the front windows. California is 70% on windshield and front side windows. No difference, I haven’t been pulled over but then again if they pulled everyone over with front window tint, they would be very busy. When I get stopped, I roll my windows down.
