Description: DW Business talks to China economist George Magnus about the significance of the country's 'Third Plenum', an important closed-door meeting of the Communist Party's leadership. On the agenda are reforms aimed at boosting economic growth amidst a slowing economy, which are rumored to include initiatives to enhance technological self-sufficiency and support the private sector.

I'm fascinated by how the West considers a 4.7% GDP growth rate slow, especially when European economies aren't growing at all. China hasn't experienced a recession since 1976. Even in 2020, their economy managed to grow. China produces many of the everyday items we use and is technologically on par with the West.

Germany is already a developed economy so it has no major changes in the future, however China will have to transition from developing to developed economy and that is a major change. The USA and Europe did this change 1970s-1980s and it was painful with losing industry and manufacturing to other countries and China will soon have to do the same thing. The problem is that if China tries to fight the transition and hold on to industry they could follow the path of Japan which is still trying to hold and so it has become stuck in the past. China doing that is very dangerous for not only China but the world as industry is stuck in China the price will rise for goods leading to inflation and poor countries will be unable to buy goods from China anymore so China will become more and more dependent on the West and that will cause a problem for USA and Europe as they cannot let the trade balance go too far off, it already is very unleveled and so it forces the West to use Tariffs to protect their industry. It is just a bad situation that can be avoided by China letting industry leave China allowing it to raise wages and become developed country properly . we will see how China navigates this path. The West cannot make decisions for China but will react to protect their own industry of course, that is normal, the west did the same with Japan too.

In Germany the population vote for leaders to represent them in parliament. The leaders do what is right for the people they represent. The Democratic world has no central planning at all, decisions are made as time changes for what the population want. If China exporting goods to Europe risks people's jobs they will demand politicians to protect their jobs and block access to Chinese companies. This is not making enemies between countries just normal trade games. China can export more and more goods to Germany that Germany does not make so there are no jobs at risk. The West had the same situation with Japan in 1980s-1990s, it is not a big problem, this is just part of normal trade relations. Germany had trade war with Japan but they are very friendly countries, and Germany can be very friendly with China even with a trade war, that is just normal relations

I really find the comments and discussions in this RU-vid video about the Chinese economy and the "secretive Communist Chinese Party" far off the mark. If you read Chinese, details about the 3rd Plenum are in many Chinese official newspapers. The 3rd Plenum is always focused on domestic economy. The current economic challenges facing China are quite well known - the real estate bubble purposely busted earlier needed resolution, the trade war launched by the US against China caused much unemployment among the low end manufacturing sectors, the general economic slow down since the pandemic caused much unemployment among new college graduates and finally the high accumulated debt among provincial/city/county governments needed resolution - all of these have been reported widely in Chinese and foreign language media. That is what the 3rd Plenum is all about - finding strategic solutions for all of these issues and planned execution of coordinated steps to ensure success followed by actual execution steps. Hope your viewers find this helpful. Good night gentlemen from west coast USA.

4.5% growth means the Chinese economy will grow by $830bn in nominal terms, and (more to the point) $1.5 trillion in PPP terms. This last figure is equal to 26% of German GDP. @brendon1689
@brendon1689 Месяц назад
a little bit misguided the idea is that they don't "need" to grow much more, so rates of 0.2% are actually fairly strong for so called developed countries but it is indeed ridiculous to say that china is on the brink every time the gdp growth goes down by 0.1%

They always mentioned China as the second largest economy. In terms of real growth and PPP, China is number one by far. The US GDP is fluffed up, they don’t make anything but print paper money. The GDP of real estate, rental, sports and entertainment, services such lawsuits (Trump contributed to over 100 million), over 700 foreign bases, over inflated defence budget, doesn’t add to the growth of a country. Meanwhile, the country is falling apart with fourth rate infrastructure, homelessness, lower income for the majority. Everything is in decline. For God sakes, can’t even bring back the stuck astronauts.

As I was typing my messages yesterday, and this morning I already have staffs telling me and deciphering these meetings follow up, about 7 main points and 14 sub-points. And we have to quickly realign the company's directions to maximise profit (from business stand point) and if u r in other sectors, you might want to readjust. If you don't then you might miss the boat and opportunity. The publication (like a White Paper or Green paper in the UK, but this one is in Red cover) is very clear to us, but they are written in Chinese. If these white dudes do not study in China, it is very difficult to understand China. Also, China has no obligation to translate for these "China Experts" speaking here on DW. It is the same for UK/US govt, I doubt Boris Johnson or Biden have the obligation to explain in Chinese to the Chinese how they make their decisions and what are the outcomes of all that. We the Chinese people need to learn English to read what they say. So I expect to see the same, that these China Experts need to be (1) living in China (2) can read and speak Chinese (3) Understand our culture before being able to decipher all of that. If you miss anyone of these 3 elements, to them, it would be "secretive". To us, the Chinese people, they are very open in plain sight. Just need to read it and understand. A lot of publications everywhere, but only searchable in the Chinese language. My advice to all of you listeners here on RU-vid, when someone say they are an expert of something, please read their CV first, then calculate exactly how long they spent their lives in China. And what kind of friends do they have in China (not the one who left China for years, have yellow skins or someone they know round the corner of a Chinese Takeaways).
