China and Indonesia have always maintained to have no territorial disputes in the South China Sea, but that might change. It began with a changed attitude between the two country's navies after an encroachment of Chinese fishing vessels into Indonesia's Exclusive Economic Zone, and it escalated after Indonesias started drilling oil in disputed waters.

It's actually beneficial to Vietnam that way. When you think about it, having stronger indonesia,WHILE avoiding the risk of actually protecting those water AND being part of the same organization union of ASEAN their businesses can still operate together with indonesians while the Indonesian government keeps legitimacy and take responsibility along with risk.

The thing is, messing around with Indonesia as of now is a huge risk to China. - Losing one of their biggest trade partners. - Losing Billion in investment money with no return. - Losing access to -Maluku- Malacca Strait (Selat Malaka); means either China losing fast access to Saudi's oil, export to Europe, and ability to fast network with the current developing African nations. - Pushing Indonesia closer to the western's side. This is why China doesn't go full on ballistic, claiming territories like they did with the Philippines and Vietnam.

It's worth noting and repeating over and over again, since no one seems to notice its importance (even among Indonesian watchers): UNCLOS is basically the entire legal basis to Indonesia's "inner sea territory" and its recognition as archipelago state. Which is why even if it doesn't directly influence Indonesia, if there's case of UNCLOS violation, Indonesia would be one of the first responder to condemn such violations, as what happened later with respect to Phillipine, which angered China (event after this video's timeline). UNCLOS is basically one of key pillars to Indonesia's territorial sovereignty, and China only realized this Indonesia's "red line" in the last few years, which is why lately they switched strategy from blatant disregard of UNCLOS to trying to be more accommodating and instead opt for its reinterpretation favorable to itself.

But because Indonesia is one of the founders and leaders of Non-aligned movement, Indonesia is remain neutral, not choosing any of both sides, only chose peace. That's why Indonesian president is the FIRST and ONLY of world's leaders who met Zelensky (29 June 2022) and Putin (30 June 2022) during war in Ukraine, and he offered himself as brigde for peace discussion. The rest is up to Ukraine, NATO and Russia.

Unfortunately for Indonesia, both Ukraine and Russia snubs Indonesia's offer. Zelensky would not stop untill Ukraine can reclaim all of Ukraine's territories including those who were illegally annexed by Russia in 2014, while Putin himself also would not want to stop untill he can install a pro-russia puppet regime in Ukraine or completely annexing every bit part of Ukraine.

Indonesia has always been a neutral party when it comes to the conflict between China and other Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam and the Philippines over the Nine-Dash Line because we’re so concerned about our bilateral relations with our largest investors, but now they’re encroaching on the North Natuna Sea then Indonesia has no choice but to move closer to the side of our ASEAN neighbors.

@@hellogoodbyestaysavage6283 if you've been to Natuna and the surrounding islands then you'd know the woes of the locals who have to deal with the Chinese patrol. It's them who the government need to worry about, not you, idling about in front of your screen. The government wouldn't build structures in the North Natuna Sea and the president wouldn't have made the visit if everything was fine. It was a big gesture because Indonesia needs to let China know that we're not backing off on the matter. Diplomatic moves are made in secret between the two countries but it's also important for Indonesia to signal to the world that it's not going to back down on what's been ratified under international laws.

While China is Indonesia largest trading partner. China also knows not to push their luck as more than half of all their export and Import goes through the Malacca strait. And if Indonesia starts blockading Chinese ships it would hurt themselves more.

We also own 2 deep sea routes in the eastern side of the archipelago. If we use an embargo and ban chinese cargo ships, while their small cargo ship can go in malaysia's side of malacca strait, their big ship that should use the deep sea route should go around papua new guinea and to north australia then go west.

Asean countries will do their bussiness by first looking at indonesia. Before indonesia's standoff with china where photo of president jokowi stand on top of indonesia's warship taken, other south east asian countries that conflicting with china take the compromising policy to avoid conflict with china. After that standoff hapened, vietnam, philipine and malaysia change their policy to confronting chinese government. and little bit interesting detail: the oil company that indonesia make contract to drill there is Zarubezhneft russian federation state company, basicly rusia (which is chinese close ally) acknowladge that its indonesian teritory, and if china try to sabotage the drilling, they risk the live of rusian citizen that work there too, indonesia is not that strong in military, but smart.

Indonesia started exploited Natuna gas & oil reserves this year, ignoring China protest. We don't care about China investment because most of their biggest investment was on the mining sectors. The Chinese need our resources as much as we need their investment, if they withdraw their investment from Us it would be a blessing. Those mining factory & smelters that the Chinese already build would be ours, as for the debts there's a row of western financial institutions ready to bailout as long Indonesia free from China influence. The Malaca straits are the choke point for China trades, Indonesia shifting side to the west would devastated for China and we know they won't risk it. 😁

China is really sneaky on this issue. On one press con, China MFA didn't dispute Indonesia's Natuna island status but at the same time said it has fishing right in waters near Natuna as they called it "a traditional fishing ground". For now, China is a bit backing off in that area only to realise if they push Indonesia too hard, Jakarta would have no option but to become fully pledged US Allies like the Philippines. But you never know. China can also use their investment in Indonesia to suppress Jakarta on this issue.

I don't think it would happened again most of Indonesian can distinguished who is who and it's totally nonsense to do that. The PRC itself never cared for Chinese Indonesian and other overseas Chinese in the world, When crisis happened in Indonesia in 1965 and 1998 they didn't offer any help towards Indonesian Chinese. So I don't think the native Indonesian would think the Chinese Indo as agent of communist or so.

Glodok was on high alert on security during Ahok drama back in 2017. And then there was a failed terror bombing plot targetting Taman Aggrek, Central Park, and Neo Soho malls in Grogol during 2019 election, those three malls having a huge visit number from Chindo community, the perpetrator was a lecturer from IPB. Not to mention random stone throwing incidents targetting Chinese restaurants here during peak COVID back in 2021. Do you still think Indonesians could distinguish mainland Chinese and overseas Chinese? I don't think so!!!

Funny, that Malaysia/Singapore/Brunei don't have any problem respecting the boundaries nor they actively trying to provoke Indonesia (including protest) about North Natuna Sea. It is always China (that just ssooooo far away) that keep this provoking attitude. I think the whole ASEAN should be more concern about this. No, Indonesia no longer has any border disputes with singapore and the area in western malaysia. We have disputes in ambalat, eastern malaysia, Eastside of the Borneo. Everytime fisherman crossing illegally they're arrested by the coast guard no matter which country they're from. The most recent is vietnamese. But only china have fishermans guided by their navy/coastguard ships while illegally crossing. Ofc they'll get tension in the area. China is the one whose weird. They're claiming sea that's far away from their land. Of course countries nearer to that sea would be angry.

Indonesia's Natuna Island's Sea is demarcated according to UNCLOS. If China successfully destroys UNCLOS limits, say goodbye to Natuna's waters and natural resources. Natuna's waters falls way inside of China's dash claim which China is now patrolling inside Indonesian waters surrounding Natuna. And those dash claims of China does not have coordinates, they are just arbitrary lines on their map that moves and expands everytime they issue a new map, that means they are free to expand it, as they already have.

Why does China so persistently claiming this 9-dash line. What could be the final plan for the area? Is China going to build mam-made sea wall? Or man-made continent at a save distant from the mainland in case the war with US happen? Because if the 9-dash line historical claim was nothing but fishing area, I am sure Indonesia can negotiate for Chinese fisherman fishing quota there. China claim is absurd in all levels. Imagine if your neighbour from the next street block claim your front yard because he sometimes hangout there? Again, what is China final plan?

Indonesia hold a deeper roots with Asean country therefore china should be wise to know if military conflict happen around north natuna sea, china will be loosing its borderline as a neutral country, against us- australian and ever growing military bas in phillipines. Since Indonesia is mutual partner and stand in neutral between these two i think small part of nine dash line is grey area... china won't force it.. they only test how far indonesian would stand in this conflict

It’s dealing with facts rationally rather than based yr analysis on emotional issues over the Natuna island’s dispute between the parties concerned; where China & Indonesia have been working on together to work out the ongoing dispute over the fishing activities around those islands. Calling out for hostility is not the way to settle any disputes esp. when these two countries are having good economic relationships to prosper under that cooperative effort. Indonesia has much to develop & gained more from China’s financial & technological prowess which would enabled Indonesia to progress rapidly for its people’s advancement & welfare. Indonesia won’t be in its current economic trajectory without China’s cooperation to help it to move forward.! There will always be some indirect western interferences in any matters in the ASEAN region with concerted efforts to destabilize the peaceful cooperative efforts for economic progress among ASEAN countries with China today. Let’s think on facts, not on emotions.!

IMO, the Indonesian government should take it one step further by giving some rudimentary military training to all able-bodied citizens (male and female), to gently remind China that each and every one of us are not afraid to escalate if China tried to push their luck. They may have superior military armament, but we are not the kind of people they can push around.
