I feel very blessed lol Matt mentioned the danger of becoming like your parents And I remembered that I watched my parents go from racist xenophobic LGBTQ bigoted Christians in their 30s, to absolutely loving atheist hippies by their '50s. They changed, because they learned from their kids. And I think that might be the new model we need. Parents that are willing to learn from their kids and change

I thought the caller was giving an account of near death when describing needing to be resuscitated. Matt seemed to be misunderstanding the callers experience. "NDEs usually occur during reversible clinical death." The caller described an absence of an NDE during a reversible clinical death.

Because part of the persona of a individual up on a podium is gravitas, the image of superior expertise, of superior knowledge, from a person of superior intellect, superior character and integrity. *You lose that and you lose the audience* . Why would anybody believe what he/she said or take it seriously without that? Calling in would put a big dent on that image, if not completely disperse it.

If you are wasting your time complaining that Matt need to treat callers with more courtesy, just take a look at how incredibly patient and understanding he was with that trainwreck of Ashton's fallacious circle jerk. The duration of the conversation was excruciating for the listeners, but he maintained considerably more composure than was warranted. I didn't clock it.

Exactly. Ashton’s saving grace is that we have little doubt Ashton genuinely believes the things he’s saying and the answers he’s giving (however awful they are), coupled with how, for the most part, he engaged in a respectful two-way conversation. Matt will, almost always, have far more patience with that sort of caller than those who are clearly being dishonest. Callers need to get over the fact that, if they’re going to be intentionally dishonest or rude, don’t expect an inch of patience or respect.

I don't get why people get so upset about Matt's robust style. It's primarily a show for entertainment, not for genuinely seeking an intelligent thought provoking exchange of ideas. These callers are deluded and unjustified in their beliefs and if you want a simpering, pandering, sympathetic, wet lettuce of a host there are plenty to choose from, in fact they are insufferable to watch, so be careful what you wish for.

That second to last caller's discussion actually made me cry a little. I'm also deconstructing and I'm working through it with a therapist thankfully. She's been a huge help but it has been really hard at times. Being patient with myself is one of the hardest things to do since I obviously want an instant fix.

Ashton sounds like a decent young man. He had the integrity to concede on some points, but time and time again when presented with solid rational contradictions to his position his faith intervened to protect him from accepting reality. Nothing personal Ashton, you are the product of your upbringing. This is the dangers of faith - it will prevent you from accepting the parts of reality that challenges your story. It's ok to be wrong. It's ok to say I don't know.

I had two experiences, one when I was sitting on a chair and the second was standing and in both cases woke up on the floor with no memory or awareness of the time lapse. I told my doctor if that is what dying is like I have no problem with it. She was upset with me but sent me to see a heart specialist anyway and they found nothing. Mark Twain said, “If the eternity that led up to my birth was of no concern why should the eternity that follows my death be a concern?”

I dont know if Aston will be reading these comments, but I wanted to make an important point about the person that was supposedly healed. Even if the story happened exactly as described, there is a perfectly reasonable naturalistic explanation for how it happened. You see, many many people go to that location all the time praying for healing. There is a small percentage of people who will spontaneously get better from whatever their condition is without any known reason. Combine those two facts, and eventually you're going to have somebody who is spontaneously healed after praying at that "holy" location. It's not a matter of if, but a matter of when. I do not know whether the specific example you cited is actually legitimate, but even if I granted it was, I consider the naturalistic inevitability vastly more likely than all of our understanding of nature suddenly being suspended for this one person.

For Ashton, the story about Jesus healing the leper seems real to him essentially because the story just seems real. I suppose if there were fairies and leprechauns walking around in the story then might not think it was true but otherwise just because it sounds reasonable it must be true in his mind.

I can't remember his name or his exact credentials (I believe he was a medical doctor), but there was an expert in experiences stemming from psychotropic drugs who came up with a lot of cool evidence for things like a significant correlation between "witch outbreaks" like in Salem or various European countries and a very rainy period prior to a harvest and noting that such a thing used to often lead to ergot, a natural hallucinogen, forming on stalks of wheat that today are elminated but prior to the modern era were not. He discovered a paper that reviewed all the listed miracles that occurred at Lourdes in France that showed a strong correlation between the likelihood of a requested miracle happening and the distance the person who was the subject of the requessted miracle had to travel to Lourdes, suggesting that there is some kind of placebo effect and/or a stronger incentive for the person to believe they were healed or to try to coninvce others that they had been.

I doubt you'd find it. And if you do find it, it'll be highly inaccurate. Complicated by lack of records, low chance that atheist would even be identified. Or identified often enough to provide decent scope. And it's just "who was caught". Which transgressions. Need to compare to genpop theist/non-theist numbers for the whole period. Which are...what? Not "registered Anglican". Did they believe? Just US? Other countries even tougher to get comprehensive records. Etc.

A large majority of prisoners claim to be Christian, but there are practical reasons for that. I don't know about specific crime stats though. Could check the FBI bureau of crime statistics. Keep in mind though, hardly anyone knows what atheist actually means, and people who stopped going to church when they were 15 might still consider themselves Christians even when they practice literally none of it.

i began to deconstruct after i started reading the Bible by myself for the first time without a preacher or teacher or some other kind of authority telling me how to interpret it after that, i started being kind of vocal about it on social media and i had friends send me clips from George Carlin, and just like for Paulogia, that was pretty helpful for me in continuing to deconstruct, and eventually i found clips on RU-vid of Matt Dillahunty on the Atheist Experience and that about finished the job, realistically i mean realistically it took years to fully deconstruct many of the peripheral beliefs that stemmed from my parents' religion, but it's fair to say that was about when i stopped believing in god

Raised in a very christian family....dont know a single person that can say that they have directly had an AUDIble conversation with God, nor can anyone say they have physically seen him. No recorded proof of any miracles or of God...camera phones have been around for 20+ years. I no longer feel there is a logical reason to beleive in God. For an all-powerful being, God cant be bothered to take 60 seconds to provide irrefutable proof that he exists.

Quotes and accomplishments are constantly misattributed to people. "That totally sounds like something Jimmy Carr would say." Or, it's also an effective way to gain status, whether done by the individual, or their followers. I'd like a version of Jesus' story told with a bunch of other street preachers and their disciples walking around turning water into wine, doing the slack line, hot coals, whatever. But also social media exists, and they post online. Can you imagine how true any of the disciples' posts would be for any of their favorite preachers?

@@sandersson2813 Disagree. When you're male of a certain age and lacking scalp hair as well as no facial hair, one looks like a bowling ball or an egg. I think a short goatee is a solution to that. I'm guilty.

Hey Ashton, Okay let's say hypothetically that I am in the 1st century and I took a paper and a pen and write down the verses and revelations for a religion and for a guy and in the end I wrote that the guy rose from the dead and came out of the tomb and ascended to heaven. Later in the conclusion I also wrote there were 500 eye witnesses and throughout this entire phenomenon that was happening alive I just wrote everything in that scripture and I created a non-fictional fairy tale and still how people think it's really true and it literally happened and the writer only knows that it was a big lie and just wrote it down for fun and fooling an entire civilization by just claiming anything with giving a number and saying all these people saw this.

Also, your claim that Jesus "toned down" his miracles after the healing of the leper is wildly incorrect, canonically Jesus fed huge portions of Judea by performing miracles in front of at least 15,000 people on two different occasions in the bible. You really didn't seem ready to have this conversation, or even know much about your own religion. You believe the story of the leper because it was written down in the bible, you believe there were eyewitnesses to it because that was written down in the Bible, you just ran back to the Bible every time in this wholy circular argument.

The Catholic Church did not approve of ordinary people reading the Bible. Probably, because over the centuries, from top to bottom, they could not reach agreement on what the writings actually meant. The original writings that could cause problems can only be viewed in Rome by high clerics who are classified on an index. For 2,000 years, Catholics have been unable to agree on what is and is not correct. To the outside world they tell one story, because the sales model must not be affected. The church in Rome wants to remain the richest institution in the world, so a changing story is not appropriate. A few hundred years ago, the king of England (who wrote his own Bible) and Luther and Calvin created a schism, which they feared in Rome. Thousands of nominations and millions of interpretations later, there are still those who think the great fairy tale book is true, as long as it is read as they understand it. People wake up, and instead of reading, do some studying. If you only read, you will never be able to investigate for yourself what is right and true. Every religious institution does not want you to think and study, because there is a good chance that you will understand why they tell the beautiful stories. The storytellers have always earned well throughout humanity. And what could be better than that you only have to read one book and quote from it.

Being an atheist just means "no god belief", nothing more is neccesary for this. How you became one? Irrelevant for the label. Some people won't get that a discussion of an emotionally volatile situation, when nobody at that time has any good information and all we have are unsubstantiated claims, Is neither productive or rational or helpfull, or anything.

I have no idea what Jimmy heard/read or from who it was that seems to have disappointed him so much, but I can say that I was disappointed in myself for the brief reaction I had. It was one that might get me a visit by authorities if it were written down where many could see, but I can attest it wasnt how I really feel and was more the emotional kneejerk reaction of that part of my brain when it caught up to what my logical part was telling me: whoever did it just handed the election to him on a platter. I can imagine that many probably had similar reactions to mine and may have spouted these comments to others before they reigned in those impulses. I'm hoping thats what most of it is in Jimmy's circle, just kneejerk reactions that lead to hot headed comments. It happens, and then most people come back to their normal selves after a bit.
