When you are requiered is no longer a RIGHT but a DUTY imposed by the state (administration). The only elected member of the administration is the PRESIDENT. The House of representatives is a part of the NATION not the ADMINISTRATION. If you want your requests to be represented, you vote. Therefore voting is a political Right not a civil duty

In my contry is mandatory. It your civil right and duty to vote. I live in a fully democratic contry, were vote is not even questioned. US allways talks about right but never about it duties. Same as is mentioned in the video, what drives and maintain the mandatory vote is not the fear or fines, is mostly cultural and social pressure. You can vote for any candidate or non, but you need to decide the future of your country, for action or inaction.

This would encourage politicians to lie. People who don't vote probably aren't really into politics, if they're forced they'll just vote based on the surface level information, so politicians are just gonna want to look good in ads. Since people aren't interested enough to fact check it they'll just vote for whoever sounds the best, so a candidate who makes outrageous promises will beat a candidate who makes reasonable ones. Also, they may say 'i support x' and then get away with voting against that since a big portion of their constituents won't care enough to do anything or even know about it.

It's a nice sentiment to say get out and vote, but it's not a lack of voters that has got us where we are in the USA. It's a two party system that is always fighting blindly against 'the other'. Rank choice is pretty awesome. It would also help if we figured out as a society how to get everyone through college without burdening them with crippling debt. We need to raise our overall intelligence or no doubt we will wind up as a side-note in history.

i don't understand the concept of "not voting is a political statement" or is a kin to "political protesting". What kind of statement/protest doesn't do, say or have any consequences on what is happening. By not voting, you're not against something, you're silent on it, ignored. Instead of rebelling, its more like turning a blind eye to. In the system america has, a no vote is simply not letting yourself be heard and going along with the crowd. That might not be your intention, but thats simply what happens. No one goes, ah, so many people didnt vote, therefore the person on the ballot isnt going to be elected, it doesnt even make them scared to change their policy due to the none-existent pressure you put on them. Even voting for a 3rd party does more as it gives more credence to different views and policies. What i feel like most Americans/people in general want is to be able to vote a type of descent or abstain, when a certain percentage of the pop votes it, the candidates need to be changed.

Pay people to vote, plain and simple. Make it an automatic payment that is tacked into your taxes for voting, this way you don't have to concern yourself with holding onto paperwork. It's a tax rebate, so if your tax obligation is $0 that year you pocket it. This should be applied by the IRS with 0 commitments from the voter to ensure they get it. Also, each candidate on the ticket should be required to make a document/video summarizing their own policies, with no reference to the opposition, that should be required reading/watching before voting. Edit: also, there should be a FREE ID given out by the federal government that details what voting districts you live in. This way no one can say that voter identification is in doubt or that laws requiring ID are designed to disenfranchise. Make it a virtual ID so that it can't be lost and gets checked at the polling location.

The penalty for not voting should be tied to a percentage of your wage. Say you make 100K a year and the fine for not voting was 3% well that's 3K you're not getting back. We should also look at who employees these nonvoters. If it's widespread at places like Pizza Hut or Shell Gas stations well then there maybe an issue with them allowing paid time leave to voters who make min-wage and should then be fined more than the lost work hours/wages they would've otherwise had to cover.
