Title: Is Dark Souls 3 Worth it after Elden Ring?
Description:
I'm BacklogBaldie and Welcome to my channel!
In this video I compare two brutally difficult FromSoftware masterpieces, dark souls 3 and elden ring, and why dark souls 3 is worth your time after finishing elden ring, on the next step in your soulsborne journey.
The Dark Souls videogame series and it's souls borne/souls like spinoffs are one of the most rewarding videogame experiences I have ever had, and I highly recommend you give them a try.

@@AvalqncheI would assume the same, funny enough the exact opposite, first ds3 bosses are some of the best from software has ever made. What’s really amazing about ds3 is that the main pvp area has never died. Still a lot of activity still to this very day. In elden ring pvp areas lived and died very quick with the main gate academy pvp area in ER essentially a ghost town the same day the colosseum update came. Nobody uses first step anymore because it’s boring. There will never be an area like pontyff Sullivan

For anyone who is reading this and is considering buying Dark Souls 3, or any other souls-like for that matter, go for it! While it may be frustrating not being able to skip a boss you keep dying to, as long as you stick with it you will eventually beat it. Your brain has its own cheat or superpower called pattern recognition, which means that you will slowly get the hang of the boss over several attempts. Taking breaks is also something I highly recommend and I can't count the number of times I've been stuck on a boss and then came back from a break and proceeded to kill the boss on my first or second try.

I didn't see all these gripes in Elden Ring that you have with the game design and repeated parts, I think because I'm more focused on the lore and looking for clues everywhere. I also enjoy fighting those erd tree avatars and they do have to guard all those trees, so I never felt like they were a reused asset just for the sake of it. You get different crystal tears fighting them each time, so I was always happy to see them.

There are 238 bosses in total in Elden Ring. It would be a lot to expect each and every one of them to be unique.
@questionablezoomer764
@questionablezoomer764 4 месяца назад
@onn9242And yet it wasn't a secret that the expectations were extremely high before launch. 238 bosses, most of them being reused as enemies or vice versa, some poorly designed, etc. doesn't meet those expectations made prior to launch by a longshot. 50-60 unique quality bosses would be a way better design choice than this soulless ubisoft approach they went with
@JoseViktor4099
@JoseViktor4099 4 месяца назад
@@questionablezoomer764 Look it like this. Elden Ring is an open world game, so they really need to rethink their approach or needing to restructure the open world. The way they took is to make 45 diferent bosses, and put the most complex ones as main bosses, while putting the about 30 remaining all over the map, normally on diferent context (dual boss fight, variations) to feel it a bit more fresh. I think that people are overly exagerating with this thing, as Ubisoft would literally made 5 main bosses and put it along the map, probably the same encounter because they dont have time for creativity due to how rushed their games are. This From approach works very decently for an open world imo.
@theydisintegrate
@theydisintegrate 4 месяца назад
@@questionablezoomer764 yeah I'm sorry but I disagree with the comparison to Ubisoft.... I started playing Eden Ring after getting frustrated with Valhalla and I never went back. I've played Elden Ring 5 times at this point, and I'm starting a spell blade build literally tonight because I'm psyched to magic infuse the bloodhounds fang...... I can't let some crap about expectations at launch 2 years ago ruin how much I love this game. No disrespect meant.
@gothxm

if they just gave these enemies regular health bars people wouldnt be complaining. some bosses repeating makes perfect sense for the world. I dont count every enemy that has a boss health bar as a "real boss" theyre a level or two below that. There will always be people who dont like it but i loved Elden Ring. i see the flaws but since i love playing open world games im already used to these games having less replayability than a shorter linear game. Ive beaten bloodborne and sekiro more than elden ring but ive spent an equal amount of time in elden ring as multiple playthroughs in bloodborne.

I started my Soulslike journey with Dark Souls, played it through twice and spent a lot of time in a certain woodland ganking up on blue invaders, logging about 600 hours until Dark Souls 2 came along. Dark Souls 2 was the first game for which I collected all achievements in my life on the Xbox360. I played about 300 hours of it until I bought an Xbox one and could no longer play it. Until the Scholar of the First Sin edition released. I played that game for years; over 2000 hours, up into NG+80 and got all achievements for it. I spent hours upon hours on the bridge in the Iron Keep enjoying fight clubs and many hours in the arena's. It is also the only game in which I really enjoyed playing as a blue spirit. I then moved from Xbox One to PS4 and bought the SotfS edition again. Got all achievements for it for a third time and played the PVP side of the game right until the release day of Dark Souls 3. Dark Souls 3 became my true love. There is no game I played more than DS3. I had over 5000 hours in it by the time I moved on from my PS4 to PC gaming. The online aspect of that game kept it alive for me for so long. Fight clubs and 6 man multiplayer madness in the area behind Pontyf will forever be some of my favourite gaming memories. I have also played Demon Souls Remake on PS5 for about 30 hours before giving up on it because the death runs were just to tedious for my taste. I am currently 780 hours into my Elden Ring journey, but because the PVP aspect of it is nowhere near as good as the experience was in DS2 and DS3 I don't think I will ever get to the 2000 or 5000 hour mark. My favourite bosses in the trilogy are: DS1: Great Greywolf Sif (I have this guy tattooed on my arm) DS2: The Fume Knight. DS3: Twin Princes. The funny thing is that although I have Sif tattooed on my arm, the Twin Princes fight is the first boss fight I think about whenever I think about the best boss fight I have ever had. It is just so good and the score is magnificent. That fight on itself is worth buying the game for.

@123SLM123 4 месяца назад
@ltdada74 hi! First of all your math is incorrect! Dark Souls cane out in 2011, which is 12.5 years ago. That equals 4566.5 days. If we divide 7700 hours by those 4566.5 days we get 1.6 hours on average per day. Which is about 96 minutes, in case you were wondering. I also spend 10 hours per week in my homegym and I also practise piano an hour a day. I have a lot of passive income and I don't actually need to work more than about 16 hours per week. I go on holiday 8 weeks per year. I don't really watch tv or movies, but I do have a home theater. The point is, I need no help, I am doing great, thanks. Also even if I did spend the 4 hours every day (this equals 16000 hours over that 11 years you were on about) I still wouldn't need help. I would be doing what I love. I popped my dark souls cherry with elden ring (which was incredible) and then after a small break I dove into DS3. DS3 is wayyy more punishing but I also find it wayyy more rewarding after struggling on a boss for 2hours because you HAVE to beat it to progress. Because it's so punishing even though Elden Ring in my opinion is one only the best made open world games (which doesn't need an easy mode just use your mimic) I prefer DS3>EldenRing. i've beaten elden 4x now, each different builds, and each thru all optional areas/major bosses. i've beaten ds3 upwards of 15x. certainly worth it, the best of the dark souls games by a wide margin imo (as in 1,2, and 3). also, the dlc is incredible, gael is at the tippy top of my 'best bosses ever created' list, mechanically, environmentally, musically, cinematically, contextually, just absolutely perfect. for anyone that couldn't make it past gundyr and loved elden, absolutely worth trying again. while elden still takes the cake for me, there is definitely something to be said for the more linear pathway, the whole experience feels much more intentional and polished, granted it takes a hit in exploration and discovery for that (hard to beat that first play of elden and getting teleported to florida or first entering siofra well or leyndell). one thing is that ds3 is much 'darker' in aesthetic overall, which i take as a negative. the contrast between the beauty and ugliness in elden gives the whole world a much more dynamic and fantastical feel overall. ds3 however, has many of the best bosses. i thought eldens bosses were much, much weaker in comparison, with really only morgott, godfrey, radagon (eldenbeast not so much), maliketh and mayyybe mohg getting close to the quality of many of ds3's bosses (i'm not a big fan of malenia, always seems to feel absolutely unfair or absolutely cheesed, with the difference often coming down to rng, makes it feel like an unsatisfying win the 4 times i've beaten her). i'm guessing most will split between the two based on whether they emphasize gameplay, or immersion/rpg/exploration elements. and of course, if good bosses is what you're after, neither game holds a candle to sekiro, atleast mechanically (not sure i could pick between isshin and gael).

wow, that beginning take really made me think! my first souls game was ds2, and after i jumped to ds3 and elden ring after with little issue, going back and trying ds1 just now im TERRIBLE at the game. tbf its because much of it is due to how polished the later experiences are, especially with how i was so used to be able to roll diagonally, but it was indeed a much harder experience for me, even though after the fast paced elden ring my reflexes should have been attuned to the formula enough, or so i thought...

Dark Souls 3 is quite bland and lacking viable build options and standout areas in the early game. But it's late game areas and bosses, especially the dlcs are by far my favourite amongst the whole series. I started many years ago with the first dark souls game in a time that I didn't have a smartphone or wifi. The learning curve was so brutal it made it so the rest of the souls games child's play. I still absolutely loved them though (even darksouls 2 just because the anticipation was insane) and they are the only games I've ever gotten all the achievements for.

To the point of the inconsistent balancing in elden ring. I think the DLC will be so awesome firstly because it’s a FromSoft dlc and they’re always good, but also because they will most likely scale the entire dlc for a certain point in a characters playthrough (most likely either mid game or late game) and the whole dlc will most likely have great pacing of difficulty because of it

As good as ER is, at times I feel it's too big for it's own good. While open world lovers love it, I'd rather the development time spent on all the empty space between legacy dungeons, the lackluster tombs and boring caves was spent to create smaller but much more detailed and intricate levels. Imagine the twists and turns of Yharnam and DLC areas of DS2/DS3/BB but just a bit bigger given the longer dev cycle. Now that'd be awesome. My favourite areas (by level design and geometry I mean) are all the legacy dungeons - Leyndell, Stormveil and Elphael are amazing (but Elphael enemy scaling is wacked)

I enjoy all of FromSofts titles. But the two I find myself returning to over and over are Sekiro and Bloodborne. A few days ago, I picked up Lies of P. If you are a SekiroBorne fan too, I can’t stress enough how much you will LOVE Lies of P. It’s a perfect combo of the two, with just enough original gameplay ideas to make it feel like the evolution I hoped Elden Ring would be. It proves that all of the unique elements of each FromSoft title can totally be combined without damaging the gameplay. To top it off, the art style is also spectacular. FromSofts beautiful worlds are a big part of what drives me to keep moving forward. And Lies of P nails that concept. It’s kind of like a SteamPunk clockwork Bloodborne kind of thing. The Pinocchio theme is only a minimal template to create a skeleton for the world. It does all sorts of interesting stuff with the theme.

I just finished my first playthrough of DS3 and DLC after having finished Elden Ring and Bloodborne twice each in recent months. I found the overall experience of DS3 not quite as fun and far more frustrating. I was stuck on Sister Friede for ages and thought the game had broken me but after a couple of days break I returned to achieve victory. I beat Slave Knight Gael on my first attempt last night. That fight was easily the most thrilling experience I’ve had with a FromSoft game.

I don’t quite agree with not “getting“ a new souls game when playing it for the first time, at least not DS3 and ER, DS1 & DS2 are a different story all together when it comes to that aspect, where I would agree. After playing DS3 through hell and back, Elden Ring just felt very natural to me when I first played it. Since the movement and speed of the game felt basically the same, it was really only a matter of learning movesets from new enemy types, and exploiting movesets of those already known to me. Example. DS3 players will know exactly how the Imps in the dungeons will behave, and that they’ll cling to walls after fighting just one of them. Not because they’re absolute gaming gods that can do everything, but because they’ll recognize their moveset, which was already present for another enemy type in DS3, and was just reused for a new character model. Example 2. Banished Knights (Sword and Shield variant) are basically Lothric Knights+ (with a couple tweaks). Only difference being the Storm Attacks they get (Lothric Knights had a stance weapon art instead), and them no longer being poise broken after every attack like in DS3.

As someone who started with elden ring and decided to go back and play the entire DS trilogy even though I’m only 3 hours into DS3, DS1 was a masterpiece in atmosphere, customization, fresh boss designs, and world building. DS2 although it’s ambitious and albeit risky execution I would say it’s art style and use of color made the world entirely more vibrant, the level of bloating in enemies let’s the difficulty overshadow the best aspects of the game and it’s innovative mechanics ex. Human effigies, lifegems, etc. personally I think I prefer the armor sets over DS1 (honestly overheated in my opinion) DS3 seems like an amalgamation of fromsofts innovations throughout the years, atmosphere, level design, build depth, art style, and most importantly lore depth. I will say this, I feel like I’ve been living under a rock for the past decade missing out on these games during release, I already have demons souls and bloodborne downloaded on my ps5 thanks to ps plus, I’ll probably play the ever loving fuck out of them and enjoy them just as much, the only one I’m dreading is sekiro!

I agree with you for the most part. I played Elden Ring. As my introduction into from software games. And loved it so much, I had to buy. Blood-borne. Which I also loved. But not as much as ER. Then I got DS3. And it was great. Easier than I was led to believe. But super fun. Just like the souls like games. Like. Lies of P. Or loads of the fallen. I’ve become quite handy with my blade. In all of these games. But. Elden Ring will always be my favourite because it was my first. And I’m still playing it. Two years later. I have mastered the art of everything. From wielding a sword. Using magic incantations dragon spells. To using my bow. And parrying. I learned all of this in Elden ring and took it to all the other games. I was born a legend because I’m Scottish. I still can’t decide which game I like better. I do think you nailed it though, Elden Ring is way more fun in the beginning as you’re messing around and establishing your character, but then I often find myself aimless on subsequent playthroughs. I quite like the linearity of DS3. Nice to just focus directly on the challenge ahead. Also DS3 bosses are just unmatched for me. Dancer, Pontiff, Twin Princes, Midir, & Lady Friede are all engrained in my memory. For their substantial challenge and their overall visual design, lore, and soundtracks. And so many others are great too. Elden Ring has some excellent bosses as well, I just find DS3 has more memorable ones. Pros and cons to both and I’m happy we have both games for different moods/types of players, but I agree one is not necessarily “better” than the other. They’re both masterpieces.

And after giving Elden Ring a try, Dark Souls 3 is still my fav FromSoft game... My main take away is that more "linear" game design always for Miyazaki to play with your emotions at a better rate, where as "open world" it's a lot more difficult... Playing Elden Ring gave me the feeling of boredom, then feeling of I found something, to then be finished with that something pretty quickly and back to boredom... All in all, Dark Souls 3 is great to experience after Elden Ring, I would not be surprised if some end up liking DS3 more...
