Portland Oregon has a vibrant Downtown scene, but this hasn't always been the case. Homeless, drug issues, and crime have headed the news stories. Today, I walk around Downtown Portland Oregon while going over where Portland was, where it is now, and where I think it will go.
It turns out the city is really changing for the better. Between recent laws and a new energy in the city, this video will showcase all the challenges and awesome places opening up in the downtown landscape.

The car? That was a dark grey 1972 Camaro. I used to have one. I couldn't believe I saw it in this video! I moved to Portland in 2001 and finally left in late 2019. I hope to go back one day. I really miss it there. Nice walk thru, and I'm glad people are starting to recognize Mayor Adams needed to clean up that mess of OCCUPY right when it first happened instead of just playing games with them. I also felt it lead to all the riots in the past decade. That was one of the most beautiful places I've ever lived. I've done a few cross country trips, Portland was just BEAUTIFUL. I really hope they can clean it up. Thanks to both my gracious hosts for the walk thru. Stay blessed, safe, and prosperous.

I couldn’t agree more! Traveling California and Washington there are some comparable areas of west coast beauty, but I’ve had tons of great interactions with fellow Portlanders-I’ve also lived in the area since 2001, SE Portland especially has a place in my heart! Cheers

Can you explain how protests cause crime in a city to become worse over a decade? I'm genuinely interested to know
@billf7062

The opioid-> heroin-> fentanyl epidemic has been a disaster for Portland. Mild winters; tolerant attitudes, decriminalization of drugs and legal camping has resulted in the drug addicted and mentally ill roaming the streets of Portland in the thousands. In Portland, homeless encampments are situated in front of people’s homes and businesses. Dangerously unsanitary conditions, graffiti, vandalism, theft and violence overwhelm city services. Decades ago state mental asylums fell out of favor; now, our cities are mental asylums. The current model is absurdly inefficient and downright stupid not to mention inhumane in the extreme.

Im thinking of doing a solo weekend trip to portland in a couple months. Thanks for the video! It's nice to get a good perpective of the city. Btw, do you think it'd be smart to stay at the Hoxton?
@LivinginOregonandWashington
@LivinginOregonandWashington 3 месяца назад
I've heard good things about Hoxton, it would definitely put you in the heart of downtown. Portland has got a lot more to offer than downtown, I know a lot of people that like to stay in Alberta Arts district or Hawthorne stretch. The inner east side definitely has more walkable restaurant scene, but downtown has got a lot of nightlife. Reach out if you have more questions, cheers! 503-957-7981

What could I do for fun or just interesting stuff from late August until Labor Day weekend of 2024, for a ''vacation'' in the Portland, area ? (never been here, just taking a break from scorching heat in Arizona, since it's cheap to fly to Portland ) I like water and green landscapes, since you never get enough of that when you live in the dessert .

I suggest doing at least a half day in the Columbia River Gorge, that would be a stark contrast! For city parks, Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden (Rhoddies will have just have gone, but still beautiful), leech Botanical gardens, Mt tabor park, Westmoreland City park on the east side. On west side Japanese gardens, forest park, Portland Rose gardens (do this one during sunset!) A trip to Timberline lodge, or down to Cannon Beach to switch things up is always nice.

I lived in Portland for many years and always thought it was a beautiful city. But no more..now it just looks like a slum….graffiti EVERYWHERE you look. And whether you think it’s art or garbage, it’s wrong! It’s destruction of someone else’s property, but no one knows right from wrong anymore. And no one obviously cares about the hideous graffiti. No pride. I love Oregon and will never leave it, but you can have your Portland slum.

I’ve not watched the video yet. But I live in Portland and moved in 2020 and it’s a very safe city. Way safer than the bigger cities. Anyone who thinks the “rough streets” of Portland is that bad is a sheltered untraveled person. You want unsafe? Go to Mumbai. You want unsafe go to Skidrow in LA. You want unsafe go to New York. Portland is a peaceful wonderland by comparison.

@michaeltoney2277
@michaeltoney2277 2 месяца назад
@@Dc-oe8qe three years ago isn’t a fair comparison. That was height of every shut down in every major city. New York at its worse is way worse than Portland ever dreamed of being and that isn’t a reflection on New York it’s just a much larger place. If you tell me I’m wrong I’ll understand that you are being sentimental for your home town. Portland went through a rough time during the pandemic, no doubt but every city did.

Well that really didn’t show much of anything as to tents/homeless on the streets 🤔. So one cannot make a determination if Downtown PDX is safe or not. 🫤. As to what do to with vacant commercial spaces … would City Government ever think of converting some to SRO’s to get the homeless off the streets or would that be too expensive of an option 🧐
