I wanted to become a train driver but in the 70's the future for rail looked bleak so I became a teacher. One of the little lads I taught grew up, I bumped into him in town and asked what his job was. You've guessed it. I was sick with jealousy for several days. A year or two later I heard he'd stopped train driving as it was too stressful. I am now a professional driver (OO gauge model trains at a tourist attraction, click the logo for fun clips, especially the disco)

I always wanted to drive a loco, well I was born in the 50s so drivimg steam was the dream. In reality it was dirty and hard work but more to the point,, even today with the cleanliness of diesel and electric traction the downside of it is shitty work, not just plain mornings, afternoons and nights, but strange shifts that vary slot. It is well known that shift work is bad for health,, humans aren't nocturnal and we like routine.
@paulm2467
@paulm2467 Год назад
It's principally earlies and lates, our earliest shift is 0430 start and our latest finishes around 1:20, nights are permanent in our organisation. You are quite right in that it's the worst and hardest part of the job but it seems to be really variable from person to person. The shifts also vary in length and difficulty so you can have a 9 hour shift with 8 hrs in the cab or one with 5 hours driving, our shortest shifts are only between 6 and 7 hours with 4/5 hours driving and these are all the really early starts and some of the really late finishes. Normal day shifts are pretty rare and also unpopular as they necessitate traveling in the rush hour.

I don't think we're in the same country. Not even counting the high pay other people have mentioned; train drivers in the UK are incredibly well looked after. Working at night? Double pay. Working weekends or holidays? Double pay. Dirty or oily locos? Refuse to take it anywhere until it's cleaned. Malfunction? Do the same. That suicidal person just turned into as much time off, fully paid, as you need. Get three suicidal people in your entire career? Immediately retired (optional, of course) with a final salary pension, never have to work another day in your life. Yeah, dream job alright.
@nakedpilgrim2498
@nakedpilgrim2498 4 года назад
@@Freakymonify I'm a train driver, and no, we don't get double pay for night shift, weekends, or holidays... it's all part of the working day. If we refused to take a train coz the loco was dirty (which it always is), we'd be sacked. As much time as we want after a suicide - fat chance! Again, we'd be sacked straight away. Three suicides and final salary pension??? What world are you living in? I've had 7, and am still expected to drive. I'm not saying it's a bad job. However, your assumptions are completely wrong. Unfortunately we get assaulted so often by people like you who assume we do nothing, but you have no clue what goes on behind the scenes. But I'm starting to see that everyone is an expert in what they know nothing about...

It's not necessary to be particularly smart, you have to be able to concentrate for a long time, to be able to follow instructions and apply the correct methods and techniques consistently, to take responsibility and to communicate, collaborate and understand what is required of you, take the assessments and they will show whether you are potentially a train driver, you have nothing to lose and you might be pleasantly surprised.

You don't need academic qualifications in the UK. You need a confident command of written English and numeracy but not with a stipulated academic certificate. My brother-in-law became a train driver with Northern in 2016. He only had a maths and an English GCSE. There are around 30 assessments and tests that they do in-house. It's more about concentration and fast response times than academic knowledge.

@nounoufriend
@nounoufriend 3 года назад
@EnglishMuffin AWS is for warning of signal aspect sounds a horn applies brake it not acknowledged on any signal at a caution aspect only time used for speed is with a TSR temp speed restriction . TPWS can be triggered by speed when approaching signal at caution to fast DRA is passenger train only it helps prevent setting of on a red Drivers reminder apparatus

@Floofarri 458 Don’t forget some networks/traction have additional safety systems. For example, the GWML and Chiltern are fitted with Automatic Train Protection (ATP). And the WCML are fitted with Tilt Authorisation Speed Supervision (TASS) for Class 221s/390s. Another example is the underground and Thameslink in the core which have Correct Side Door Enable/Release (CSDR/CSDE) which prevents wrong side doors from being released.

If the driver dies and rests on top of the DSD pedal, its only vigilance (or TPWS/ AWS)that will stop the train from the cab. Passengers probably wouldnt know so wont pull the passcoms that will bring the train to a halt. @ 90mph the 150 tons of train with over 100 people in would have gone about 2 miles in those 90 seconds Imagine if vigilance was set for 10 minutes. That train would have potentially travelled 15 miles by itself.
