When you see 24/7 commercial news "b-roll" of mass demonstrations and protests and riots in "the Middle East" on television screens in North America, Europe, etc., you need to be able to compare that to what's actually happening on the ground in these places at that time in reality. In this latest episode of the Egypt Travel Video Podcast, we show you the raw reality on the ground in Egypt during a week when commercial 24-hour news channels back home are painting a picture for their audiences that the whole region is in flames and on the brink of armageddon. Spoiler alert - it's not. See the shocking true reality on the ground in this episode, and let me know in the comments if this is what you thought was going on here then too.

If you are thinking of going to Egypt, go! My family and I just got back from two weeks there, and we had one of the best trips of our lives. Egypt is safe and welcoming. We traveled with John's company, and it was wonderful. John is a completely trustworthy source of information on Egypt, and you can relay on his reports. Ignore the trolls and fearmongers.

One of the many things that makes my job among the absolute best in the world is that I get to meet so many amazing people like this and spend time with them and see their reactions to experiencing bucket-list sites and having once-in-a-lifetime experiences all over Egypt. Two weeks was way too short and I hope to see you all again soon in Egypt, the US, the moon or anywhere!!

Egypt is completely different from the countries of the Middle East, as it does not contain Islamic groups from Iran or Western military bases. The behavior of Egyptians is also different from the behavior of Arabs and Islamists. Egyptians are not Arabs but they only speak Arabic
@TheEgyptTravelChannel
@TheEgyptTravelChannel 9 месяцев назад
Good points, but a few small corrections... there are a few very small Western military bases in Egypt over in the eastern Siani that help enforce the peace treaty under UN mandate. But you make a very good point that Egypt doesn't have the same active Islamist movements like other countries in the region. And although I would suspect that many Egyptians do consider themselves Arabs too, you also make a good point here again that Egypt is indeed a very diverse country and many Egyptians do consider themselves ethnically descendant from the ancient inhabitants of Kemet, especially the huge Coptic community, as well as many ethnically Balkan, Turkish, Armenians who have been here for many many centuries. Most people who come here as tourists just think that Egypt is like all other countries in the region and don't realized how diverse and mixed it really is, and Egyptians are very proud of that heritage.

I felt safer in Egypt than in the USA. And they could tell I really liked them. We often hugged each other, I was invited to two family homes for dinner. They didn't want me to leave. That's why when I came back a month later a month before September 11, 2001, what I saw on television in the USA and the blame on Egyptians was BS. Media COUNTS on people who NEVER step out of the USA and see how people really live and how they really treat people. Of course, there are necessary precautions, but none any different than what you would take when visiting other exotic countries.
@TheEgyptTravelChannel

That's very very true. It's great that you went there multiple times and could see and judge for yourself what Egypt and the Egyptian people are really like. It sounds like your experience there with people being warm and hospitable and friendly and welcoming was very typical. It's always wise to take the narrative portrayed in for-profit media channels with a grain of salt because they have a huge incentive to maximize watch time and clicks, which they do through fear-mongering and playing into stereotypes. No news channel in the world wants to report that everything is safe, calm, and normal because that's not profitable.

Connie, since you're from the United States, I can pretty much guarantee that you're MUCH closer to civil unrest than any Egyptian is. How many murders, robberies, rapes, muggings, and other attacks or violent crimes occurred in your state (which is what?) in the past week, month, year? You'd be much safer getting on a plane and coming to Egypt than you would be staying in your own home in the United States.

The reason there’s no one in that square is because they are banned from protesting in the square. Those who tried were arrested. I follow your channel because I have an upcoming trip. You have lost credibility with this posting. There have been protests in Cairo and all the empty squares depends on time of day you’re filming. Would have been better if you had acknowledged that there was some protests and how the government is handling it. Yes the president “asked” people to protest because he’s trying to control the response. Since protests are banned, if people started to protest on they own it would be a bigger issue. This way the government can control the response. What most people traveling to Egypt are concern about is the lone person who will avenge what they feel are going on in Gaza and the U.S. role by taking it out on American tourists. Pretending that oh look all is great here, and not address how the Egyptian government is addressing tourism concerns during this time is insulting.
@TheEgyptTravelChannel
@TheEgyptTravelChannel 10 месяцев назад
You literally just contradicted yourself multiple times in the same paragraph, sentence after sentence. I'm happy if nonsensical people stop following me because we don't need to waste the time of those who read comments to engage and learn with this type of contradictory nonsense. You started off saying "there's no one in the square because they are banned from protesting." Then you go on to say "There HAVE been protest in Cairo..." If they're banned, there wouldn't have been any. Despite this first mindless contradiction, protests were not banned. They did occur in some controlled spaces and situations, and I most certainly did talk about that, which you conveniently left out in your next contradiction where command that I should have done as you say and "acknowledged that there were some protests." However, I not only did that, but I showed video of them and talked about them and the nuances behind them in depth. And I'm not "pretending" anything... I'm showing what everyone else here in Egypt - Egyptians and non-Egyptians alike - area all saying because we are actually here on the ground, not making assumptions from afar and relying on what's on TV to come online and post nonsensical rants. Take that garbage elsewhere. I have zero patience for deranged trolling.
@myriamp.1628
@myriamp.1628 10 месяцев назад
Unauthorized public protest are banned in Egypt and specifically in Tahrir square. To stand in Tahrir Square and say look there’s no protest seems inaccurate to me since protests are not allowed there in the first place. Everything that came after that comment became suspect. I’m not trolling you, I went out of my to find a video of yours that I watched a few weeks ago in order to subscribe hoping you would post something about what’s going on on the ground. I get your point, you’re on the ground telling everyone it’s fine and I’m saying I don’t believe it, yep, I need to work on that. Have the government taken additional measures to protect the tourists, have the hotels, the travel companies taken additional measures? Is there more security on the sites? Is it your observation that the measures currently in place are adequate and that there’s nothing extraordinary happening on the ground to warrant extra protection?

Yes, Hurghada is a major tourist area and all of the major tourist areas in Egypt are very well protected within an advanced "security bubble" that the government invests a lot of money in maintaining. The areas that are not safe are places that you are not allowed to go anyway (very remote areas out in the desert or mountain wilderness). The government concentrates its security resources on protecting and securing popular areas so that tourists can relax and enjoy their visits.
@TheEgyptTravelChannel
@TheEgyptTravelChannel 4 месяца назад
Yes, for sure. You'll be safe as long as you do everything legally and don't let anyone scam you into taking you out into areas of the desert that are off limits for tourists. The government of Egypt makes it illegal for foreigners to go into unsecure areas anyway, so as long as you're doing everything legally, you'll be perfectly safe. Enjoy your trip!!

Hi John, wanted to know your thoughts on this.
@TheEgyptTravelChannel
@TheEgyptTravelChannel 8 месяцев назад
Hey there. You're correct that incidents like these occurred a number of years ago. I don't remember the exact years but I remember the incidents you're talking about because they too were widely misreported on in western media. From what I remember, some foreign visitors were accidentally injured and/or killed when they got caught up in the crossfire of what was essentially criminal gang or clan violence activity that had spiked at the time. In other words, they were very unfortunate to have been in the path of that, but they were not targeted for being tourists. I recall a bus carrying some tourists going through a very local poor neighborhood (no clue why they took that route because we usually take the highways) and getting hit by some sort of homemade explosive that was intended for another car. And I don't remember what was ultimately found to be the cause of the other one, but I remember that one occurring closer to the construction site of the GEM so people thought tourists were being targeted. But that area of western Giza used to be a lot rougher than it is now. I've personally been out shopping for custom metal pieces in a local ironworkers neighborhood before when a fight broke out and I saw someone crack someone else's skull with some kind of metal brick. Violence between humans and groups of humans is everywhere in the world and in every country and city. But if we only went to places with no fights, no robberies, no muggings, and no murders, we'd be sitting at home for our whole lives. While that type of inter-clan warfare was mostly relegated to the more rural areas of middle Egypt where tourists were not even allowed to go, occasionally it would spill over into the larger cities since family members migrate sometimes and old family vendettas follow them (just like used to be the case in Italy - think mafia warfare - and the US - think "Hatfields and McCoys" or google it if it's unfamiliar). But luckily those types of inter-family and inter-clan "wars" are a) rare and b) fading out, if not already faded out. I haven't heard of anything like that in Cairo or a major city here since, and honestly I had not seen that spill into the cities here in the 17 or so years before that here either. I honestly think those two episodes in 2018 or 2019 were rare occurrences of rural feuds spilling over into the city, but the government here now is much better at ensuring public order and security than in years and decades past. And honestly, this type of thing occurs more in the US and UK and Italy and Mexico and Brazil and other places in the Americas and Europe than it does here in Egypt... by FAR!! In Egypt, for example, the homicide rate is about 1.3 per 100,000 (and this is local crime, not against foreigners at all, which is virtually 0.0). However, in the US the homicide rate is 7.8 per 100,000, 21.3 in Brazil, 26.1 in Mexico, 31.2 in the Bahamas, and 49.6 in the US Virgin Islands, among other popular tourist destinations around the world. Hopefully that answers your questions and puts them into a bit more perspective.

Almost no one can go to Tahrir square since the military coup 10 years ago, only those allowed by the military government do. Egypt is extremely unsafe especially for any video-grapher. To record such video as you are doing you must have had permission from the authorities.
@TheEgyptTravelChannel
@TheEgyptTravelChannel 10 месяцев назад
So your location is not anywhere even remotely close to Egypt (you're in Indonesia), so have you ever even been here? It doesn't seem so, since the first part of what you say is completely not true at all, and the second part of what you say is the same in virtually any country. I think all Egyptians would call complete BS on your claim that Egypt is unsafe. And millions of people pass through Tahrir Square every day, so saying no one can go there is just hilarious. And most all countries require a permit to do professional videography in public areas, including yours. So why can't Egypt require that too? Tourists or citizens filming for personal purposes is completely fine, as is demonstrated in this very video when the police officer came up to me to ask if I was part of a news crew or an individual filming for personal use and then smiled and said "Have a nice time" when he saw that I was an amateur. @@TheEgyptTravelChannel man you made your point in 2 minutes. Rest is full of repetition. You say its safe yet police stopped you to check what the hell you are doing. Its not safe. Stop comparing Egypt with western europe. Ridiculous

You clearly did not watch the video. You’re desperately scanning for things to critique without a) even listening to or reading what’s being said, or b) knowing anything about the place you’re talking about at all. Case in point: the police officer came over to ask a question, which the text on the screen clearly explains, then he smiled and walked away. This is a far cry from being evidence for your crazy claim that Egypt is “not safe.” And the “repetition” you’re talking about is in different places, scenarios, and contexts, all of which reinforce the same points which, unfortunately for your uninformed argument, is completely counter to your uninformed argument. Don’t go on online platforms and just spout off at the mouth without knowing what you’re talking about or having experience in a place you’re discussing. That habit contributes to the trollification of the internet, and this channel is a NO TROLLS environment. 🚫
