I think he meant what he said: Craig Hawker is a sharing person. Meaning he is collaborative - he shares ideas, shares credit, and otherwise acknowledges group or partnership effort. This contrasts with a person who claims sole ownership or inventor ship, etc. A lot of academics are “sharing people” in this sense.

As someone who did Biochemistry Research in a different lab at UCSB, I can say that the Dean Christal email is SUS. Even the post you showed I don’t think Eric is claiming to be “sole inventor”. Furthermore, when you read the email aloud the last sentence of the first paragraph you added a word (this was to make the sentence grammatically correct and I don’t blame you for it lol). Dean says “Eric testified under oath that Craig was inventor of Olaplex”. but you added “the” before inventor because grammatically there should be an article there. Craig was not /the/ inventor of olaplex, he was /an/ inventor of olaplex. I feel like the fact that he left out the article deeply suspicious because, like you did when reading it, people default to “the” which implies Craig is the sole inventor, and he isn’t. Overall, everyone who’s in chemistry/biochemistry academic research knows that unless they’re really new to the field, the P.I. is not doing any of the bench work or research to create the product. They write grants for funding and they provide guidance, but they don’t do the actual work. Eric did all of the actual experimentation to develop olaplex, and had to share credit with Craig because that’s how working under a PI works. He wouldn’t have had the equipment or resources to do the research if he weren’t in the hawker lab.

Just adding my two cents here. A close relative recently earned her PhD in bio chemistry. It is pretty clear watching the process that the students do the majority of the work inventing new technology and testing it in countless lab experiments.while the professor oversees and gives guidance. If it is successful. I think it’s pretty typical for the professor to receive most or all of the credit especially when it comes to publishing in peer review journals and patents. Basically I believe it was probably a collaborative effort when it comes to the original Ola Plex

Yes. Charging that kind of money for the amount they pay to make it, makes me not want to buy it out of spite lol lol Especially since we can’t buy the product that was the first to be released, the product I wanted then and I still want lol. the #1 bond multiplier, the one you use with your lightener/bleach lol. To stop your hair from breaking. Why would I want to break my hair THEN repair it lol. You can still only buy it if you are a licensed hairdresser. As much as I would love to go to a hairdresser that uses it. I can’t Really afford too and even more important every time I have gone to a good Salon it hasn’t turned out the way I want. (Spending $300 plus) My hair is quite difficult. I always leave with pieces being platinum and others being a more grey color, and I don’t have grey hair lol even at my age. Lol. I just know my hair better after 30 years of dying myself, what part needs bleaching longer, and what part needs less time for toner 😅. Not that I’m so great lol. Just Trial and error. Lol. They must have promised hairdressers that they will always be the only ones to be able to buy it. So they don’t loose clients. I’m guessing.

I think it's interesting that you fill the bottle with tap water because the mineral content in tap water differs from region to region. I wonder if the existence of certain minerals, or lack thereof, in someone's tap water could impact how the product performs? Maybe filling the bottle with distilled water would be the best option.
@erin7241
@erin7241 Год назад
Sure, I understand your logic. However Olaplex also recommends wetting the hair prior to use, for me that’s using my shower head, the same water you’d fill the Epres spray bottle with so I’m not sure it actually matters. Just another way of looking at it.

@FatBabyCheeks
@FatBabyCheeks Год назад
@@erin7241 Not really the same as the water you usedfrom your shower doesn't sit in a bottle for 2 months, which is the projected amount of time you can keep Epres in the fridge after mixing. Tap water has stuff in it that will grow bacteria where as distilled water does not, which is why hair products are made with distilled water and not tap water. It is very possible distilled water will make a difference.

they tested EPRES IS ALL TYPES OF WATER and the water quality has ZERO effect on how eprers works, it is oil-based not water-based and acid-free.
@lizcademy4809
@lizcademy4809 4 месяца назад
@@Eagle4Change This makes little sense ... If Epres is oil based, then why is water being added - the product and water would separate in the spray bottle and need to be thoroughly mixed (beyond customer shaking) before every use. In addition, denatured alcohol is not an oil-based ingredient. [I would need to go back to my books to see if the other ingredients are oil or water based.] "Acid free" is a marketing term ... anything with any watery component will have a pH, meaning it has some leel of acidity (or alkalinity). Water has a pH. Hair is already slightly acid, and anything too alkaline will damage hair ... just saying "acid free" does not tell us if the pH of the product is good for the hair. FYI, I'm an amateur cosmetic chemist. What's your background?

@@lynni9621 it definitely looked oily prior to washing, but afterward it seemed fine. I did notice that it appeared to have gotten dirtier faster despite my normal wash routine of washing at least twice. I was disappointed with the results regarding sleekness, because my hair was a bit frizzy afterward. Nothing too major but noticeable by me and my friends. I was optimistic because I normally use the Color Wow Dreamcoat spray after every wash, but this time I didn’t to see if: 1.) it really does last through multiple washes. 2.) if Epres would help tame some frizz. Like i said, I was a bit disappointed on both fronts but I did have high expectations for someone who typically only washes once per week.

I feel like the ease of use is a big plus. I’ve never used K18 because I have a chronic illness and it would just be too much hassle to add to my shower routine, which is why I’ve been so interested in Epres (plus I have virgin hair that I only heat style a few times a year so my hair is really healthy, but I still like to do something extra for my hair). It just seems so much easier to use than K18 or Olaplex, and it’s fragrance free so I don’t have to go to the lengths I used to to keep Olaplex off my skin while I was using it. If K18 came out with a pre-shampoo treatment I’d be all-in but for now I just can’t stop my shower midway through for anything. Excited to try Epres!

FYI you don’t need to stop midway thru your shower to use K18. That’s how Abbey does it and there’s nothing wrong with that (clearly it works well lol), BUT you don’t need to do it that way. When I use it, I shampoo, skip conditioner, apply K18 once I’m out of the shower and my hair is damp, leave it, and then apply leave in conditioner and other products after 4 mins. According ti the brand itself: “- Shampoo. Skip conditioner - Gently towel dry hair ‘til damp - Start with 1 pump and spread it between your hands. - Evenly distribute it from ends to roots. - Add more as needed but don’t exceed 3 pumps - Wait 4 minutes before combing + styling to get your finished look + feel. - Then do whatever you want. This is a leave-in, no rinse needed.”

Just wanted to offer a thought as a stylist, your hair likely doesn't need bond builders because your bonds are still intact. There are a lot of luxurious treatments to condition hair that your hair could benefit from but if you aren't chemically damaging the hair and you rarely heat style you really don't need to invest in bond restoration. There won't be any benefit vs a great mask for example that would be a nice way to recondition the hair. But of course please enjoy trying new things, it's just a thought 😃
@sovrappensiero1
@sovrappensiero1 Год назад
I kind of wonder if Epres will evolve to include extra hair products that “make the treatment work even better.” I mean, that’s what happened with Olaplex. I think the original treatment was a few steps done in the salon, and the No. 3 for maintenance…they just keep adding more steps to get more profits. I’m not convinced that any of those other steps actually improve the way No. 3 works…I think that’s the way they chose to expand and increase revenue and maintain consumer interest. Is it the only way? I don’t know. Maybe it is, especially if they don’t funnel some revenue into R&D (and I don’t know if they do or not).

I thought people would have enough common sense to know in any area of the beauty industry nothing is created by one singular person. You're hair is so beautiful and that could be problematic when you're testing out how well hair products repair and improve hair. Not a terrible problem to have of course but it can make a test and reveal experiment a little difficult as results will be mild since its hard to show any drastic improvement on already gorgeous hair. I'm wondering if you've considered using volunteer models with less fortunate hair quality to help show the effects of various products. Of course I love that you use the products yourself and report on the experience because you're obviously pretty knowledgeable and your input wouldn't be complete without first hand account. I just feel from the viewpoint of someone with horribly straw-like hair ends (the result of bleaching followed by a recent amd unfortunate hair curling mishap), I feel like seeing transformation from brittle and damaged to soft and repaired would be more telling. Meaning, if you haven't used up an entire mix, can you just keep it in the container for the next use or does it somehow expire, evaporate over time? I've been on the verge of getting K18 (that price point tho...) and now I'm leaning towards trying this first for both price point (though I'm unclear on how price per use stacks against K18) and the ease of use. The need to shampoo before and after Olaplex is a big turnoff.

Fantastic video, Abbey! You are my go-to beauty journalist: your videos are so thorough and informative. I hadnt even heard of Epres until I watched your video. So I would be curious to know 1) Whether the Epres product is more comparable to Olaplex 1, 2 (the salon only products), or Olaplex 3? 2) And also: Why is it a spray when Olaplex expressly says not to spray Olaplex 1 onto hair? 3) Why dont they need to break it down into 2 steps (a la Olaplex 1 + 2)?

Biochemists who have alot of ideas do leave to create other brands. For example, Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier with CRISPR DNA editing . Jennifer Doudna founded 3 companies and then left to create Mammoth Biosciences (Another CRISPR gene editing company). That said patent wars and marketing is always a thing behind closed doors its just that the public normally does not see it unless it gets to social media. But circulating in labs gossip spreads. lol Anyways love your videos! ^__^

Amazing! Thank you Abbey! 💖 I was wondering whether you could do a review of the two different K18 masks? I've read the ingredient lists but don't really understand why they're different. So the K18 Leave-in Molecular Repair Hair Mask and the K18 Professional Molecular Repair Hair Mask, which I guess is for salon use but much cheaper? And then maybe also the K18 Professional Molecular Repair Hair Mist? Would love to see that! 💛

I've never used any of the bond building products because I don't color my hair and only use the most minimal heat styling tools. I do have naturally wavy/curly hair and am getting a few grays. I'm really curious if something like this would make any difference on my textured, dry, somewhat frizzy but not really damaged hair? The drama is what it is and I'll be interested to see how it plays out 🤔🤨 Thanks for all your hard work!

Hiiii Abbey! I just finished using the 1st vial yesterday, and since I use all your product suggestions, I really don't know if it is the combination of several good products or is it EPRES? I think the same thing will happen to many of your followers, there are times when I use Epres and after the shampoo I apply K18, most of the time I use the living proof bond repair because I really like to use conditioner and mask, which according to the indications of k18 there is no need to use conditioner and mask because the product should stay in your hair, i saw better results with this mechanism. Thank you for all the excellent and high quality content! we can see the love and passion and that is priceless! a big hug from the heart of South America

Genuine questions: 1) Why does your hair in your before and after photos look a completely different colour to what it is in this video? It literally looks bright blonde in the before and afters when you have actually had your hair medium blonde for a long while now. 2) How can you possibly judge efficacy of any product when you constantly switch and change for short periods of time and also use some products simultaneously or in such close proximity?

A couple things Abbey didn't mention: Price: $48 with the spray bottle and 2 vials. 2 vials (refill) is $34 The ingredients list on the website is very short: diethylhexyl maleate, oleyl alcohol, alcohol denat., stearamidopropyl dimethylamine None of these look like a bond repair ingredient, and the alcohol might be drying. I would love to see a full breakdown of the complete ingredients list. I'm also suspicious of the "no acid" claim. What's the product's pH? For the moment, my hair is happy with Olaplex, so I see no reason to try something new, especially from a shady founder.
@AbbeyYung

Fun fact. Sally Beauty supply passed on having Olaplex in their stores. I mean the pro stuff too. I was a manager there at the time it came out 2014/2015 ish. At the time these mens names were not tied to Olapex idk why. Very strange. Or at least the reps that talked to us did not mention them ever. They said it was a woman behind Olaplex. I don't remember her name. Probably in an old email somewhere.
@Aphrodite01

Olaplex was founded in 2014 by Dean and Darcy Christal, with the formula developed by Dr. Eric Pressly and Dr. Craig Hawker. Now Pressly and his business partner Michael Sampson, both co-CEOs, are launching their own brand, Epres, based on new research Pressly has done. Guessing Darcy was the woman you were referring to.
@StarPanda7

@Aphrodite they redid Olaplex. I bet there new product is the real deal. When Olaplex came out it was different than whats on the shelf now. I got it before most professionals did. Idk who the woman was. These mens names were never mentioned in the meetings of the product. Which is very interesting.

As it is intended for pre-wash use, does it work when hair is coated with product (e.g, styling products like texturizing sprays, oil in the ends, heatprotectants containing silicone etc)? K-18 specifically requires clean hair as does Olaplex and it makes perfectly sense if the product should work deep in the hair...Did they say anything about that?

Love your hair in this vid! Your questions sound good. Please clarify how to pronounce the name, lol. While the drama is interesting, I’m not too concerned about it. We learned he was directly involved in Olaplex as part of the duo. Actually, he’s more directly involved than I initially figured. (Coming from corporate America, I’m used to men exaggerating their achievements to get ahead...it’s not like he’s Todd from accounting out for a money grab;) Anyway, looking forward to your follow up! I’ve used one bottle so far and have 3 to go. I like it. But, like you, I’ve also been using K18 before this, and I just chopped off 5 inches of the “extra bleached” blonde off my ends. So my hair is in pretty good shape already.

I'm no scientist, but there's a reason brand's like K18 & Olaplex reccomened clarifying your hair before use. I don't understand how this could be effective as a pre wash with product buildup (like silicone) in the hair from the previous week...

Plenty of room for multiple bonding lines. Regardless of the ingredients that actually heal bonds the other ingredients in each brand will be different and therefore work differently on different types of hair. Even if they all do the same thing each hair type will react differently to the different lines.
