In this video I discuss who event photography is for. This is a difficult topic as your temperament and unique skill sets all come into play. So rather than discuss every attribute, mindset, and skillsets that have an impact on if event photography is right for you, I discuss what it is, exactly, that I love about event photography. My hope is that my thoughts are relatable and provide you with some insight into if event photography is right for you.

I've been waiting for the opportunity after having gathered the gear i wanted to go to a large scale event that i was interested in. Finally got the chance to jump in to the fires at a cherry blossom festival held by our local history museum. Vendors, entertainment, people enjoying the trees, and a couple performing musicians/bands. I did it for myself as practice and it was intense. It felt great to finally have the chance to throw myself behind the camera for something i truly wanted to document. As expected, it was rough. But i walked away substantially more knowledgeable and excited for the next opportunity to shoot, and with a handful of photos i was genuinely happy with. While I doubt I'd ever make this line of work into a full time business, the skills you take with you to your jobs are the same required doing this for fun or as one off gigs for these events and conventions. Your videos have been an amazing resource for helping me both plan my approach and giving me the confidence that i can go to an event and give it my all.

Spot on with this, Mik; these points are actually the reasons why I'm wanting to go the direction of doing events primarily, myself.

The reason Mik I have an interest in "event photography" is that I think I am an "observant" person, but in a non-participatory way... Meaning, if the party/event is NOT about ME, then I can step back and watch what is transpiring in all corners of the room... so why not get a camera and record images of people's interactions...trying to capture the mood, people, and what happened for "posterity sake"... It's almost being "photo-journalistic" but in a very controlled environment!... maybe the equivalent would be similar to a sports photographer, just without the sports, but still an "EVENT"... just saying...📸🤓😎

I had been doing event photography for almost 2 years but the client was too greedy and was only paying $35 per event or hour and did not pay extra for the editing. I found a better opportunity and gave my notice before leaving.

Thats great that you made a conscious decision to quit a person that discounted your worth. Mik Milman videos have always encouraged me to do better.

Hey mik, I have really learned a lot from your videos. I am student and I am in a dilemma on wether I should buy a speedligt or a 50 mm prime lens. I often find myself doing event photography but I also wanted to try out portrait photography. I think I am going for the speedlight first. What do you think?

I would have to have a more complete idea of what gear you already have to give you a decent answer. LMK.

@@MikMilman I have a cheap d5100 body and just a kit lens. My teacher asked me to shoot for her birthday and it basically got me to make money from event photography. I want to up my game and buy a speedlight to produce better photos in events, but I also want to try out portraits with a 50 mm. If I remember correctly, you also had a 50 mm as your first lens?

A 50 mm lens on a full frame camera can potentially cover all bases at an event with a very open layout. But if you're shooting on a crop frame camera, it definitely wouldn't be sufficient for capturing everything. It's a tough call, but I would probably get the speed light first if it's an either or situation.

Of course you can make money.

Your biggest limit will be yourself. You own tools, it's up to you to make something with them.

Ordinarily I don't respond to questions asked to the photographer who made the video, but in this case, I'm going to put in my two cents worth. You didn't say if you're using a crop sensor camera or full frame but regardless the two lenses you have are not well suited for an event or much of anything to be honest. (Maybe landscape or street photography.) If you had one of the following: a 24-105, 24-70 or 70-200 lens to go along with the two lenses that you have you might be able to handle an event or portrait session. What you have are capable of getting you in over your head and you'll risk getting sued at the worst or having to refund money in the best of circumstances. Gear is important, not necessarily a ton of gear but enough to handle the job(s) you're attempting to shoot. So, while these two lenses could conceivably make you money, you're going to be extremely limited in what you can effectively shoot in order to make that money.

I agree that the gear they are using is less than ideal, but his question was if they could make money, and of course they can.
