I lived with my grandparents for 2 months. They boil everything - boil meat into leather, boil veggies into slop, etc. The only seasoning they use is salt and pepper. BUT they always serve gravy, no matter what the meal is, and I'll tell ya ... gravy is what helped me survive those 2 months.

The bird saliva thing at 7:20, usually we soak it and then put it in a soup of rock sugar! But yeah, it definitely is quite a weird concept on face value. People climb to the nests high up in caves. It's a real delicacy in Malaysia!

The bird saliva comes from Swiftlet birds that live in caves. The Swiftlets create their nests using their saliva because their saliva binds the nest materials together and solidifies. The nests are harvested and the saliva is refined out of the nests.

Birds nest soup is a delicacy and expensive. It's amazing how they collect the nests and cleaning them for consumption is an incredibly tedious process. The whole thing is pretty fascinating.

so if anyone was wondering about how you collect bird spit, birds called Swifts have specialized saliva that solidifies quickly and they actually use their spit as a nest. They make their nests on the stalactites of caves. People will then go and extract those nests from caves. Henceforth it is a very expensive ingredient, and your grandmother will yell at you if you don't appreciate the soup she made for you using bird spit.

You're not wrong, but also note that "sashimi" doesn't refer only to fish, but it refers to any raw meat, and can even refer to horse and cow. Salmon roe, squid, and fish can also be sashimi.

I commented that too, then I found your comment, that you. And Kevin is right too, Sashimi means to cut thinly, and can apply to anly thinly sliced food, and for some reason, Salmon Roe as well (don't know how you would thinly slice that though). And just as a bit of trivia, the sashimi over a bed of rice is called Nigiri Zushi (It's pronounced Zushi in Japanese), the seaweed wrapped roll is known as Maki Zushi, formed by cutting a full sized Futomaki, and the tall seaweed wrapped sushi with food on top so you can't see the rice is Gunkan (No Zushi). Sushi though is still referred to as sushi, but the rolls themselves are Zushi.

A couple of months ago he said he decided to quit dyeing his hair. It had evidently been going grey for a number of years and he felt it might turn away the younger viewers. He finally got tired of the hassle because, with his shorter hair, he was having to color it more often. I absolutely *love* his silver fox look. He should have done it years ago!

We chinese take it from a bird nest . The birds usually use their saliva to reinforce their nest. We drink this as a body supporter or a type of medicine. It helps us chinese. It taste good and its a tradition. (Source:My Grandma)

Rhett, sushi does not mean raw fish. Sushi is vinegar rice. Sashimi would be slices of raw fish, but you could literally have some vinegar rice with only cucumbers or pickled vegetables inside and it would still be sushi. That's my pedantic rant for the day. Visit Tokyo (WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT) sometime!

Hate to be "that guy" but sushi doesn't refer to raw fish, it is the rice. So, sushi can have no raw fish in it and still be sushi. Sorry for doing that. lol

As entertaining as it was to watch you guys eat birds nest wrong, I figured I'd at least let you guys know how you're supposed to eat it, if you ever decide to feature it again. Rather than eating it as a chip, you're supposed to soak it in water first, so it softens. Plus there's usually some leftover twigs in there so once it's softened and soaked, you can pick out the twigs better. Also they gather the bird saliva by stealing bird nests and picking out all the fiber/bark/twigs until all that remains is the layer of saliva. Also it's considered super healthy to eat bird saliva.

That's because they don't. The birds make their nests and use their saliva as a sort of glue. People then harvest the saliva from the nest, hence why it's called bird's nest.

guess i didn't get that. the question, then, becomes how does one get the idea of munching on birds' nests just to taste the saliva (getting the idea to make a soup out of it)?

chickenpermission that I'm not sure either haha. But apparently it has high nutritional value. And they don't really eat the nest, they eat the saliva, which they boil, turning it into something similar in texture to gelatin. I'm not sure why Rhett and Link ate it while it was still hard.

Sushi does not have to contain raw fish, it is not just raw fish. Here is the Wikipedia page. Sushi (すし, 寿司, 鮨) is the Japanese preparation and serving of specially prepared vinegared rice (鮨飯 sushi-meshi) combined with varied ingredients (ネタ neta) such as chiefly seafood (often uncooked), vegetables, and occasionally tropical fruits.
