i think designers should embrace the challenge of designing for bigger people, make clothes that specifically look good uniquely for them. theres certainly a demand for it

I feel like some designers should consider focusing their collections on bigger people. There's obviously a hole in the market for it and I think it would be quite unique to see. Now wether or not it would be successful is a different story.

Love these hot takes. Skinny bodies - less fabric used to create the garment, less variation in size alterations (with larger bodies there is more of a variation in weight distribution which means you have to account for someone who is top heavy or bottom heavy). It just means it’s easier to make samples for skinnier models but that doesn’t mean you have to be skinny for clothes to look good.

Even though “fashion is for everyone” it feels really hard for fatter / shorter people to feel good abt the clothes they wear bcs they not only have to deal with the skinny + androgynous + tall model type that dominates fashion today, but also the long line of similar looking models before them. It really sucks that a skinner person can wear the exact same outfit yet look better. Not only does kind of mentality have to be broken down by people who don’t conform to this standard, but then it is expected of these people to reinvent/ change the fashion game to fit themselves because a lot of designers think using diverse models is too hard. Also it really sucks that I barely see models that look like me wearing clothes I like. It’s nice to have an anchor point to base a look off of or know how clothes will fit me so I can experiment more with what I like.

To be sustainable just simply buy everything second hand, used, thrifted etc. It slows your consuming down as you have to really wait to find what you want and in the meantime you have to think if you really need it. You also get to browse trough a lot of clothing so it helps find things you like, this works for designer and noname clothing. Sustainability is mostly about slowing down. Then you can also customize and make your own clothes.
@karigrandii

Plus this makes buying clothing so much more affordable.
@fashionlover4

I agree, however it seems the second hand market has really gone down in terms of quality, especially real life thrift stores and such, It's a shame but I know more people that just buy brand new items cheaply than second hand so while I think buying second hand is best, I advocate people to buy less in general.

Hot take: fashion is just as much about fitting in, as it is about standing out. For example if you wear Rick in the grocery store, you stand out, but when you go online you're in the Rick club. Everyone finds their own little tribe that usually dresses the way they do and thinks the way they do.

Fashion is for everyone, and the industry is fat phobic, can’t really exist in the same space I feel. Also I find it odd how designers attempt to be so avant-garde and revolutionary yet they can’t change the body size of the models

I think he means that anyone can be interested in fashion and use it as a medium to express themselves, even if a large chunk of the clothing isn't very good at representing bigger bodies. You could always take up sewing or get garments tailored for example, so fashion as medium is for everyone.

I started getting into fashion this year and I have a very stocky body - muscular, a little chubby but without a gut really, I'm 230 lbs at 5'9". I have thick thighs, muscular arms, and pretty pronounced shoulder/neck muscles, as well as being kinda wide in the torso. Three things this year vastly improved my confidence and my feelings about how my body looks in clothing. 1) Contrasting piece fit. If I'm wearing a tight top, I wear something looser on the bottom and vice versa. Super simple. It's as easy/cheap as picking up two packs of cheap black t-shirts in your size and one size larger (L and XL for me), then looking at what types of fits you have for bottoms and finding opposing fits to balance your wardrobe. I've always worn/liked slim and skinny jeans because I have nice calves but hate how regular fit jeans look, so embracing slightly baggier joggers/sweatpants was huge for me prior to the summer. Them being physically comfortable helped a lot, since if something feels good to wear you can work to find something to pair it with later rather than just wearing something you find uncomfortable because you think you have to. 2) Picking up sewing. I went a bit wild with it because I had cash to burn and wanted to do some atypical stuff, but there's start-up guides on RU-vid for

I love ur videos, and I’m glad you mentioned ‘fatphobia’ but I think it’s important to recognise how embedded those problematic beauty standards are within fashion, and how they are not just a product of society but also shape our society. It’s not just to exclude certain body types that aren’t profitable, but create an ideal ‘model’ body that a company can attach its brand identity onto, like the unattainable standards of heroin chic which many brands in the 90s used.

I don’t know if we will ever see another fashion week arise in the same way New York fashion week did back in the day. Only because if you look at any of the big designers from their respective countries, they all just come to Europe because that’s where they know the buyers will go. Companies like Wooyoungmi, Juun.J, Tokyo James, even Yohji and Comme all show in Europe because rhere just isnt a big enough pull outside of Europe/New York for them to make viable careers from. Until more big names band together, or we see another rise (that may be starting in Copenhagen?) of a group of great designers from one specific place again forcing buyers and media to watch, I think the system is too established to allow for that growth - and I think they dont care for that growth either
@fashionlover4
@fashionlover4 2 года назад
I agree, I think a new system is the only way for change and perhaps a fashion week that takes place solely online is a thought I had about how to make it more accessible to outside designers.
@KidCracken
@KidCracken Год назад
The world is too international for all this to really matter imo. Of course it could happen that some new fashion week grows really big, but that would probably happen because something unique makes it cool or the right celebrities endorse it. But yeah there big fashion weeks are where they are because location used to matter in a more closed world. Now? It's like fx with movies everyone wants to be at Cannes. Not because French people watch more movies, but because it's Cannes. It has the name, history and respect. Same with Paris FW. It is where it is because of the history. But it got brands from Asia and buyers from America, so in thats sense the location doesn't matter at all.
@rivkahhaubner7498
@rivkahhaubner7498 2 года назад
I both agree and disagree with the idea that clothes should speak for themselves (you don’t like when a body changes the shape of clothing). Their value as art is tied to their functional value. The value of clothes is in their interaction with the body, not in and of themselves. The beauty of a garment is not dependent on being worn, but the meaning is.
@gigianderson2463
@gigianderson2463 Год назад
I think that as you said fashion is for everyone, so why shouldn't everyone be represented? I think that it isn't true that a body takes away from the clothing especially on runway, as people should be there for the clothes and not to see model's bodies (but this often isn't the case as supermodels are seen as epitome of beauty n the fashion industry love to judge and compare size especially in women's modelling). Bodies aren't something to be afraid of, especially in fashion me thinks, but it is the beauty standard and culturally desired to have this extreme body shape. Society is so voyeuristic into body shapes and sizes that they put the supermodel size on a pedestal. Corporations don't want to subvert this conventions in case of loosing money and will always have reasons not to represent plus size (14-16) or even mid sizes (10-12) many people feel alienated or in-between... it is extremely damaging to symbolically annihilate identities in the media and fashion industries.
@oteila6151
@oteila6151 2 года назад
The elitism in fashion take was mine, and id like to elaborate a bit since ig has a very short limit on what you can reply in storys. I think the democratization of fashion on the consumer end is a bad thing (therefore elitism good). I mean that as soon as brands start to appeal to a wider audience they loose their identity. So i dont mean that it should be made harder for people to get into fashion like gatekeeping but that the designers should only make their designs for an informed small group, in the best case that group is just the designer themselves. Ofcourse money is the big thing that gatekeeps fashion but i dont think theres an easy way around this, because if the designer only sells less clothes since his target audience is smaller there has to be a price that comes with that so that its profitable. Ultimately i view fashion as an artform and with all arts you have to learn about it to understand it. As a conclusion id say fashion can only really be an artform if it has that "intellectual gatekeeping" (a term thats so pretentious can only come from the fashion world), otherwise its just a basic thing like buying food at the supermarket. _I also added consumer only since i think getting to become a designer etc. should be made much easier and the reliance on daddys money for young fashion students shouldnt be as strong as it is rn
@karigrandii
@karigrandii 2 года назад
Gatekeeping is always good in a consumerist capitalist society. Culture and art need to be protected from dilluting to just moneymaking soulless commodities

I think there is a different meaning of elitism between fashion as product and fashion as an art. As a product the elite nature of it comes from the price or attainability and wearability. People consume the product by wear it following their own taste of dressing and their budget. As an art in the other hand, of course fashion comes first as a product also, but it also comes as a performance or a runway with built narrative, stagedesign, makeup, or even acting in someway. The elitism also comes from the attainability, but as a whole happening art, we couldn't make it elitist. Same as Warhol's art or Pollock's, people could attain the product of art, but more people has the right to be educated about the art. To know, understand the art as part of human civilization, that's why there are museums and gallery. To democratize fashion as art is to provide knowledge about the meaning of fashion in certain timeline of our species not to make the product accessible to consume by all people.

There is genuine designs and silhouettes that just looks better on bigger bodies, but those clothes aren't being designed except for mid market and lower. So I think designers just seem to not be able to think about big bodies? Just like you said they are closed that just would not look on everyone so it makes no sense to have those clothes available at every size. But the reverse is true as it says there are close designs that specifically only look good in bigger bodies and having it in a smaller body as you said would distort or deform the silhouette or shape of the garment
@babybubble2543
@babybubble2543 Год назад
oh come on, designers don’t make clothes that fit only skinny people just because it’s easier. no fashion designer wants to make clothes that would be the easiest, they want to make clothes that would embody their artistic vision. Fat and muscular bodies wouldn’t “deform” that vision if they were a part of it conceptually. Fashion brands make clothes with one specific body type in mind, not because it’s the easiest of them all, but because of fatphobia, ableism and eurocentric body standards. They don’t make clothes for marginalized bodies because they’re elitist. Sure, there are more options when it comes to silhouettes if you make clothes for thin people. That doesn’t excuse the complete absence of clothes made for fat people in high fashion. Is it so fucking hard to imagine a single item of clothing that would look good on a fat person? And please don’t tell me how hard it is to incorporate diverse sizing into a fashion show, i’m sure major fashion brands can afford it. And seeing the amount of publicity and praise any brand that includes diverse sizing gets, the only reason they’re not doing it is because they don’t want to see anyone who’s not built like bella hadid wearing their clothes. To anyone who doesn’t see a problem with that, sincerely, fuck you.

Heyhey I really like your channel, but I think your explanation for the fashion industry favoring skinny people is a bit lazy. The fact that it is cheaper is bs when talking about big brands (ironically it’s the smaller independent designers that are mostly experimenting in this regard). Skinny bodies ‘look the same’, because it’s not just skinny bodies that are being shown but one type of skinny body. If you’d look at all the types of bodies in the world it would just be one big continuum of different bodies, there’s not one type of body that is more common than the other (and honestly that is basically implying that that body type is more ‘normal’ than others). Moreover ‘designers prefer skinny people because they wouldn’t alter their clothes’ is just a circular reasoning, because those clothes are designed for skinny people in the first place…

Thank you for sharing your point 💫 It’s my passion to make fashion more size inclusive, especially high end. Because those well known names are very tightly connected with mass media, and creating so much needed bigger sizes designs - showing them on runways and in advertisements - brings awareness. It’s deeper than just size tag, it’s about representation, acceptance and overall society healing. Also about fresh perspective creativewise. I understand technical difficulties, but come onnnn, 4000€ skirt could be designed for different body type.

Clothes can look good on anyone regardless of body type/size, the only thing that is deformed is the skill of tailoring. Mass manufacturing clothes has become so successful that it's now warped people's self-image. Designers are mostly just that... Designers. Many modern designers barley focus on craftsmanship as they are engrossed in expanding their brand.

Sustainability is such an interesting topic to me that I feel no brand has really hit. The closest is Patagonia. But to be truly sustainable a clothing company would essentially have to not make anything with raw materials or at all. It’s a good thing that companies try to be more sustainable but it somewhat goes against what a typically company does. And that is to make money. How? By creating things to sell. Idk if it makes sense but that’s just my take.
