@@stairjoke it's not that difficult to find out how it works. It's a programming language like any other. Find how it was written and compiled, and you have yourself a chance at cracking the thing wide open. It's only a matter of time
Just learned that Penpot is already working on implementing Auto Layout ('Layout' in Penpot). I might be switching right away once it's done. Let's make Penpot the Blender of UX/UI Designing Tools!!
I fully support you in this. Since Figma is fading into the hands of Adobe, it's right time PenPot Devs start warming and leveling up to make Penpot peoples loved choice.
Adobe seems so scammy. You sign up you have to agree to a contract and then when you try and cancel they're like, "Wait, if you stay we'll give you the next three months free." "No thanks", "Okay, what about if we give you 6 months free."
I switched to Penpot from XD and I'm surprised at how stable it is and how many features they've already added. I've not used Figma but it is a very nice XD alternative (and catching up fast)
Hi Scott, I'm going to tell you something funny and painful at the same time. I closed my account in a bank here in Spain because I started to feel they did some unfair things. After a couple of years as a client in another bank, it was acquired by the first one. Then, I moved my account to another bank. One year later, the same story, this bank was acquired for the first one. With Adobe, it happens exactly the same. I'd been for years running away from them, and always, always, they became buying my preferred tools and destroying them. Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and now Figma.
Ofc this happens, but its a different story when it involves open source projects, i dont really know how open penpot actually is, but in general, open source projects cannot "die", because everyone can replicate them (in a totally legal way), because the code is open to look and replicate, thats why you will never have to worry about microsoft buying linux for example.
Adobe sucks! Full disclosure; I grew up with Adobe software, they did amazing things, right up until they forced my hand by demanding that I rent their software for a monthly subscription. I turned my back on them when I started freelancing and vowed never to subscribe to their dark arts. Now that they have acquired Figma, I fear that the best features of Figma will be locked behind an extortionate monthly subscription. A dark day for design. 😢 I'm going to try Penpot tonight!
Yeah, even renting their software is ridiculously expensive -- compare to say Microsoft Office. I know it's a different space, but I think it's an apt comparison.
If enough people had signed up to pay for Figma licenses they wouldn't have had to sell their product to Adobe... Honestly as a professional if someone can't afford to pay $12 per month for a tool that will help them make thousands per month then they might want to think about a different profession. Many other professions have way more expensive monthly overheads. For example an average Uber driver spends about $200 on fuel per month... Considering that, $50 per month for a Creative Cloud licence isn't actually that bad.
@@SeeThroughist the price was not, oh no we are bankrupt sale. It is a userbase grab by adobe. With decades asshole moves by adobe, I also am in the camp of avoiding Adobe, but everyone can make their own choice, I just like to voice my disgust with Adobe where possible.
I'm definitely moving to PenPot too. Going to give it a try. Perhaps even contribute to some of the development as well. I became a CS student for exactly this reason... to know how to make the programs that are costing me an arm and a leg just to have access to them... If I ever make something as good as Figma / Photoshop, etc. I would definitely make it free for individuals for life, but any company is going to have to pay up. Because I know how companies mistreat open source devs as well as their software. But individuals who have a passion for design are left with having to pay insane amounts to express their passion in a digital form
I don’t know why Adobe is so much money angry. They are run it like mafias. I am from a developing country and you know sometimes you barely make money, paying for these services is pain. Figma had give me freedom and love. I hope penpot will help.
I just start learning Figma recently and avoid Adobe for so long because Adobe monthly subscription cost in my country in extremely expensive. I'm afraid I have to say goodbye to Figma.
Hey, another one substitute may worth to take a look is Lunacy. Interface quite closer to Figma, and some more features than Pinpot Still didn't decide which one is better
I remember when Adobe bought Soundforge, an audio editing application that was in many ways superior to Audacity. Before Adobe acquired them, I had purchased it because it was so good I thought it was worth it to have the full version. At the time I paid about 50 as I recall. After Adobe acquired it they exploded the price to about 300 (going off my recall, I think that's about right -- just know it was ridiculously expensive) dollars. That's when my hate boner for Adobe started. I welcome Penpot to the opensource community!
I fully support in lovers of Figma switching over to Penpot. Since Figma is fading into the hands of Adobe, it's right time PenPot Devs start warming and leveling up to make Penpot peoples loved choice. The next target is moving this App from Alpha version to a Stable version. I'm really loving this App (Penpot)
Adobe couldn't handle the fact that Figma stole Ai's thunder and that it is in many ways better than Ai without the insane costs attached to Adobe's CC... Now they bought it only to destroy it and make their Ai program #1 again...
For fucks sake. I've been avoiding Adobe like a champ for so long. And using Figma DAILY. Thanks for the news. I guess :( I hope that in 2025 you won't make a video titled "Penpot bought by Adobe".
I've been using PenPot (self-hosted) for a while now, and truly enjoy using it. But even I have been doing the bulk of my design work with Figma simply because "everyone else is using it." I'm looking forward to Penpot's gaining popularity, though, as I do believe the more people make the switch, the better it will be. Its biggest hurdle in gaining acceptance will be in the migration of existing projects from closed-format Figma to open-format PenPot files, though. Looking forward to seeing what a larger community can do for it!
Holy cow man haha you are so talented - already pumping a video out for this #legend Super sad about this news too. Thanks for the recommendation! Signing up
This looks GREAT! Like many here, I switched away from Adobe products. I now use Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher. I've never looked back, either. Each of them are only currently $56 USD and they upgrade for free. Also run half price sales frequently. Much more intuitive interface as well as much better functionality. I bought Macromedia Fireworks, Dreamweaver, and Flash before Adobe acquired them, too. Still going strong!! Time for Adobe to realize that even the "mighty" can be brought down. Anyone remember when WordPerfect was king???
This is too bad, sorry to hear Figma has been consumed by the dark side... :( Kind of sucks i have a tool that would allow you to draw my pages in Figma and then convert it onto React, and then Svelte... Would be interested if there is an export model like Figma has.
anyone here tried both Penpot and Lunacy, and finally choose Penpot? because i tried and found lunacy give me better UI and tools, but Penpot is opensource wich i hope this app will continue dveleoped and be better in the recent future
I'm seriously thinking it through. At least maybe the UI part. It's all written in clojure/clojurescript (compiles to js). I'd imagine it'd get a ton more of hands on deck if it were based on a more common ui framework.
I looked into the app it seems like the people who made it put some thought into it. They give you a tutorial section that is easy to access. I need auto layout and components and even padding sight. Figma was becoming soooo good! How sad. Guess I'll have to wait a few months to make the switch.
If Figma could make it, they could make it. Give it time. At least an open source program will never be taken away again. I am sure most community contributors are switching over. They hate Adobe harvesting their community assets. Things will last longer in the Open Source world.
No offence but you lived under a rock the last 10 years ... Figma was THE go to tool for every UX designer/graphic designer the last 1 years ... Always came on top on graphic design tools lists the last years.
Thank you for this intro on Penpot! I will also be moving away from Figma considering what Adobe did with Fireworks after its acquisition in 2005. Fireworks was a big threat to Adobe's Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver products combined and Adobe promised not to kill it but ultimately did so just a few short years later. They even stopped development of the product just within the first 2 years.
@@poppingjaz I stand corrected but my comment still stands. Fireworks was a lot more popular amongst web devs and independent web designers than Adobe's own tools. Many who used open-source coding tools preferred Fireworks.
is there going to be a way to copy and paste images from say pexels and paste it directly into the artboard? That was one of my favourite aspects of figma.
figma is great , def not dead.. they just made ui messy and complicated lately .. but they arent going any where .. still the leader forever .. its not dead cmon
If Adobe handle this acquisition like Microsoft handled GitHub, then fine. If Adobe consumes Figma and makes it part of Creative $hite, then RIP Figma. A sad, sad day. Adobe's brand is mud.
Adobe's acqusition of Mixamo is going great. I mean it went 'beta' for years, didn't work right with windows 10, and generally never got updated. Other than that, great.
I use(d) Figma almost daily for the past years - same reaction like you XD - the only real features I miss in Penpot are the quick (&dirty) image editing magic moves I got addicted to in figma, as they are so efficient for the daily grind. PS only for final production, but now I hope Penpot catching up soon
my mom is a CPA. she got a company provided new laptop and with it came windows 11 & the newest adobe & Microsoft suites. she uses Adobe Acrobat all day everyday. somehow they broke it. completely. no one is happy. i googled it for her and everyone hates it.
Had a look on penpot a week ago (before figma) and found it cool but saw, that they won prices 3 years ago already. Seemed not to be fast progress - without components an design libraries it makes no sense to switch (from Sketch). But I will keep an eye on it.
It was a matter of time befire I saw one of these sensationalist titles used in a video or post... no, Figma is not dead and Adobe will nit jeopardise the model that made Figma ehat it is today because it produces a lot of money. They need the revenue and at the end of the day what they did with XD did not work so now they are going to tap into Figma for that revenue.
Potential upside as an AEM dev is a future headless + react + figma implementation, but even then - lukewarm at best on today's news. Just love Figma so much, but thanks for the alternative!
