Although I enjoyed this book because the events are interesting, I must admit it drones on and felt a little boring in some parts. It's a very different writing style to the main ASOIAF series, and you can tell it's written as a historical account rather than a 'story'. Still a good read though. You made some amazing points here, looking forward to seeing more from you :)
Yeah, it's a different read for sure, but agreed on the good read. Despite the dry style, the events that take place (especially within the Dance of the Dragons war) are very exciting. I appreciate your support! Thank you so much for your comment! I'm also looking forward to seeing more of your content as you continue reviewing the ASOIAF series!
I listened to this on Audible, the narrator did a really fantastic job. It's a great book! I think you have to be a bit of a ASOIAF fan already to enjoy it but I think I could see someone enjoying it as their first book.
The Audible narration is great! I love how the narrator changes his tone of voice whenever he references Mushroom’s testimony in that, “oh by the way, Mushroom said this” kind of voice 😅
"Dry" is an apt description. I've read my share of nonfiction. I've read about military strategy and I've read about the history of currency and finance. Most of the subject matter went over my head, but the author's writing style, word usage, and "voice" kept me engaged. This book is written so plainly it's hard to get excited even when the subject matter is two dragons going head to head. Considering Martin's regular prose I know it was a conscious choice on his part, but did he have to make it sound like a 700 page wikipedia entry?
I think he probably only wrote it in that style because it was much easier for him to write than having to think up of character centric prose like he does in the main series. But yeah, it’s definitely dry
I enjoyed this book because I love history and lore and trying to tie the history and lore into the current main series. I look forward to the second half being released, and hoping more will be revealed about BloodRaven. I would also like septon Barths book to be written out. I also really wish George would do a book like this for the starks or covering the age of heroes. However, really WOW is what I need and have been waiting on.
Personally I loved this book. I wish we got some of the characters perspectives, but I understand why George told the book as a historical account. Have you read the World book?
I have not read The world of Ice and Fire but have heard that a lot of that book was copy/pasted into Fire & Blood, with exception of George changing a few lore inconsistencies
