Is Flying REALLY Faster Than Driving? | Mooney M20C Vlog #18 | Turbulent Flight

I had the opportunity today to take a good friend of mine up to his families cottage in northern Michigan. I thought it would be fun to see if we could make it in the Mooney before his wife did in her car. Of course our flight time was less than her drive time, but could we really get there faster with all the work it takes to get the plane ready?
Whether or not we were faster, we at least had a lot of fun on this BUMPY Michigan spring day!

Two things…my wife took off at 2 AM from Hartford CT to our camp in Princeton ME (usually 8 hours driving). I took off from the local airport in a friend’s Archer at about 6 AM. I got there about an hour before she did! We own a plane now!

Living in west Texas, I save a lot of time flying vs driving. One of my regular jobs is 6 to 6.5 hours by road, only 2.5 by air door to door. A 2+ hour drive to have lunch with our son at college in Denton is just 1 hour by air, again door to door. That’s cruising at 150 KTAS, mind you, which is a comfortable cruise speed in our Mooney. But it’s not just the time... it’s the aggro I skip by not having to fight traffic on the highway and especially in the cities!

The air advantage grows as the distance gets greater. There is a route down here in Virginia and North Carolina, Richmond to Ocracoke island, that definitely would benefit from being able to fly it because of a 30 mile in 90 minutes ferry leg. It’s almost 6 hours total by car and a little over an hour and a half by plane. But the truth is that if the weather is bad, you can still drive.

My wife and I have kept track of all our time including the very first call to schedule my first flight, all phone calls regarding my plane, all visits to the airport and right now I have lost 1200 hours vs driving and I have had my license for 6 years. Multiply this for my wife and we our massively in the hole. My time spent getting ready to fly grows every year. Commercial and driving is cheaper, faster and more fun.
@MyTimeToFly
@MyTimeToFly Год назад
I guess that’s some calculus we all have to personally perform. I have found trips where general aviation can’t be beat…but they aren’t abundant.
@joenelson2170
@joenelson2170 11 месяцев назад
Fun video. I’d add that timing airport to airport isn’t fair tho. To truly compare, you’d want to have the wife leave the house at the same time he does, then she drives straight to the final location while he drives to the airport and flies and then drives from that airport to their destination and asks how long she’s been there. I bet her answer then would be considerably more than 5-10 minutes.
@MyTimeToFly
@MyTimeToFly 10 месяцев назад
Hard to disagree there. This wasn't a long enough trip for the airplane to win, but get up toward a 3 hour drive and it starts to make more sense.

@@MyTimeToFly I gave this more thought than I should have after I originally replied LoL, and yeah, I came up with a couple hundred miles being the tipping point as well. I’ve never owned a plane, but my wife has owned chickens. Don’t buy chickens if you want to save money on eggs (because you won’t), buy chickens because you enjoy having chickens. And don’t buy a plane because you want to save time (or money) on travel, buy a plane because you enjoy flying. Great video though, and thanks for taking a moment to respond!

I fly out of a GA airfield and the closest large airport is around an hour drive. The thing is there is a bridge I have to cross to get there that when closed due to an accident adds several hours to the trip. You can also get delayed by 15 to 20 minutes waiting for a wide load to cross. So sometimes flying could end up way quicker and getting a taxi at the other end to finish the trip off wouldn't be a big game changer.
@MyTimeToFly
@MyTimeToFly 2 года назад
Sounds like a great option to me, there are so many cases like this nationwide!
@alexinaviation

Interesting subject.. the advantages of flying vs driving depends on distance and preparation. A flight preparation can take 1-2 hours easily with weight and balance, weather, 91.103 etc.) compared to driving you just get in and go. A thorough preflight before departure can take 30+ minutes. So factor all that in, you are probably spending 2 hours with the weather briefing, weight and balance and preflight before you get in the air
@MyTimeToFly
@MyTimeToFly 2 года назад
Very very true, and there can be unexpected delays using either form of transportation.

From my base in Dallas I've made a trip to Tulsa, OK drove to Rogers, AR and back, and still saved 4 hours off a day of driving. Flying straight to Austin, Houston, or San Antonio there's a huge difference in the plane. However, these short 1 hour trips my wife often beats me by a few minutes.

The problem with VFR flight is you can't count on the weather. If your travel plans are fixed and you can't afford to miss the trip then you will have some risk. The further you have to travel the more likely weather will interfere with a VFR flight. I had a plan to fly from Florida to the midwest. I got about 80% of the way but had to spend two nights on the road and eventually had to turn back.

Perhaps 15 years ago, we and a bunch of people we knew were traveling from Los Angeles to Sacramento, California for an event. When we drive this route, we do about 400 miles in about 7 hours, including rest stops. That time we flew, but one party drove. We left around the same time, they beat us there. We're not pilots, so we flew with an airline out of LAX. This changes the numbers a bit from the results you get as a private pilot. The party that drove was probably "flying low" and did shorter rest stops, so that would affect the numbers as well.

Have been thinking about getting back into flying again. I remember my first time I ever flew and I still remember the last time I flew. I even remember when I took my instructor up to look at the plane I was thinking about buying and how he screwed up coming into the runway in the mountains and I took over and pushed the Power Inn and the person on the radio came across said good choice. One of the real issues that has reduced the number of pilots is that its often too easy to drive today. As cars have gotten to be many times more comfortable, and the roads have gotten nicer (mostly), the airport that used to be near your destination got torn up to be developed into something more profitable for connected people and less noisy for the NIMBY’s. Well, you get less pilots, less airfields, more ground traffic, rinse repeat. Now you can’t get anywhere in most large cities by air or ground!

@@MyTimeToFly No, I went into sailboat cruising in a 41 ' Morgan Out Island in FL and The Bahamas. Sold that 12 years ago. When our club bought the Mooney, all of us almost lost it on takeoff due to oversteer when checking out. The dealer in Lancaster, PA put a small shim washer under the nut of the nose wheel doughnut to move center of wheel slightly aft. Instant success. If you move it too far aft it can shimmy. True for all nose wheels.

The gear "Johnson Bar" should require considerable effort to get it in the downlock. If it doesn't, linkages may be worn or out of rig exposing a possible nose gear collapse on rough ground. I believe you can operate the 0 360 significantly"over square" ( + 5" ?). You might consider just reducing RPM to 2500 for climb and leaving throttle full. The carburetor enrichment valve my provide cooler cylinder head temps than 25"/ 2500 rpm. Climb is significantly improved so MP drops more quickly anyway. We did that in a Twin Commanche with I0-320s by coming back to 2400 rpm. They stayed there until landing greatly reducing workload. There was a limit of about +5" on the I0 320 engine graph but I don't see any on the 0 360 one. There has never been an aircraft to match the M20C.
