Is foreign aid from Western countries and China robbing Africa of its economic independence?

Critics argue that a new wave of colonialism is sweeping across the African continent. They say that foreign direct investments and aid rob Africa of its economic independence under the guise of development. But are Europeans and the Chinese really to blame for Africa's problems? Edith Kimani met with young residents in the Kenyan capital Nairobi to find out what they think.

Is foreign aid from Western countries and China robbing Africa of its economic independence? Join the debate by telling us what you think about the topic. Just to remind you, this Street Debate was recorded before CoronaVirus forced many governments to impose social distancing. Thank you @Muchie for reminding us of this.

It's a systemic thing, getting Europeans or any new colonizer out not gonna be possible and not that easy, the structures has been built for centuries, even revolution not gonna get us out because they (Europeans) has master how to divides and conquer Africa they knew about our diversity, tribes different and culture, they've done a lot of study about African local political systems, they know how to control the African mind,we're in for it forever.

I'm Kenyan and I can say that we need to stop blaming the west for Everything that happens in the international market. When we complain that our coffee is not getting enough value in the international market ...well have we tried value addition on that coffee? Or are we just exporting roast beans????? I would like to imagine a conversation whereby you tell the German investor to pay more for that coffee just because...If he's a charity organization he might agree but a savy businessman will just go and buy his coffee somewhere else, however if we ground that coffee ,processed it or whatever process we do for value addition the negotiations are much better...good business is only done when you consider each other's mutual interests.

I find it hypocritical to blame all of Europe (50+) countries for the actions of 13 or less that actually had colonies and colonial empires. Not only that, but a lot of cental and eastern countries have suffered themselves tremendously under invading empires. To have the people getting interviewed throw around generalist terms like "white people" or Europeans tells me that they aren't interested in having an honest and fair discussion, they just want someone to blame for the failure of their government and communities. One thing I am absolutely sure of, is that a better future for everyone wonbe built on changing perceived double standards with different ones. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Excellent point and quite often forgotten. For example, Finland was colonized by the Swedes and Russians. During the Great Wrath (1714 - 1721), more women and children were enslaved in proportion to the population than in Africa. Not all white Europeans are colonizers.

“How Europe Underdeveloped Africa” - Walter Rodney, should be made a required read in all African schools. Economic aid only breeds dependency on the entity providing the aid. African leaders have long taken aid and avoided putting in the hard work it takes to develop. Some politicians come into office, do very little work and live lavishly; while allowing the exploitation of their own countries.

Collaboration is only mutually beneficial when you collaborate as equals. Elsewise it is just exploitation. Kenya has only had 57 years of independence. It took the US from 1776 to 1859 to stop deciding political office by way of duel. That's 83 years, in a country where the people decided their own borders. Kenya's growth is going to take time. It is not going to be instant. This isn't a matter of blame, this is a matter of understanding and context. From where Kenya has started, it's growth is tremendous. Keep going and be proud of your accomplishments.

One of the respondents, Tony, the guy with the blond dreds is getting on my nerves - he's clearly delusional - he is so brainwashed, I fear the hair color has penetrated his brains. I think she should and could have developed the Chinese invasion and abuse of Kenya a lot more deeply - but it appeared as though every time it was brought up she pulled the mike away much too soon. I truly hope Kenya is now ready to resolve the Neo-colonial invasion of China and the re-invasion of eruope - it's time to bite the bullet and kick them all out, and go solo - I.e. without depending on the white uberstructure. Foreign aid is a new form of colonization and I blame it on our poor governance .Africa needs a second independence ,from our colonizers and from our AFRICAN leaders .However ,we also need to refrain from the victim mentality . We can not wait for the world to be equal inorder for us to be seen ,to be heard and to apply change on the continent . We are a new breed of Africans , more informed ,more conscious and educated. What is stopping us from implementing change ? It is ourselves who can bring forth change and not our leaders. We need to stop the blaming game. All we know is to blame and to fight behind our phone screens, tweeting ,posting on our instagram and whatsapp stories but no action. All talk ...talk...talk..blaming...blaming ...blaming....Wake up africa !!!!!!!!!! ( Follow me on instagram at kuhle_ngubane)

Afrika is the richest continent on the planet, yets its people are the poorest in the world. Our youths are unemployed, non-healthcare system, poor deplorable roads, etc. Why?, Why??, Why???.

Political system in Africa stinks,it makes me want to vomit. There is no sense of direction. How can a continent with vast arable land and rivers still import food... that's pathetic.

I don't like the way the interview has been ended, and the conclusion that was made at the end. This topic is a very deep one, and cannot and should not be treated so lightly and so casually and left hanging there in the middle of nowhere, with no real idea or perception on how one should confront this situation that Africa is in.

First of all, WESTERN FOREIGN AID to AFRICA 🌍, is just a MYTH... I witnessed this when I was younger, you ask the WESTERNERS a help of building a local Hospital and train the nurses and Cadres to operate it, instead of doing it, they show up with 10 Flat TV'S purchased from abroad, not even locally. And they tell you to sign for the delivery, later they make a report that a certain Town in any Country received 1 million$ in Aid...😂

Me thinks ending the use of the word NeoColonialism please. Why not fit Coaching and Collaboration from a trustworthy Economic Partner to build a better, if not best workable model to build wealth and strength for your country. Nation building is a long process. It builds confidence and strength in your hearts and minds to build a country you want to be proud of.
