IS H&M AS BAD AS THEY SAY?

Is H&M a bad place to shop? I hear so many mixed views on H&M these days but some people absolutely hate it. I must admit, I haven't shopped at H&M for years, so I don’t really know what to expect from their stuff these days. Anyway, I’ve bought a load of their pieces to see what the quality is like and see if people's opinion on the store are right.

I’m not sure if it differs from country to country that much but in mine, H&M will barely ever have good pieces and 95% of their pieces are horrible quality. Zara on the other hand has much better quality clothing, albeit more expensive. Shirts and pants I’ve gotten from Zara have also lasted me a lot longer than pieces from H&M. Since I’m a college student I barely have enough money to buy from Zara anyway so most of my wardrobe is Zara items on sale.

@oyedotuno9014 Год назад
@@togp3403 I can agree with most points you mentioned there. H&M quality is not above Zara, it varies on items. Recent hoodies quality at H&M have been better than Zara. However zara trousers and some wool jackets have been better offerings . Overall both have been back sliding with quality of fabrics and stitching lately . However zara is more stylist and has more options considering the volume of designs they churn out annually. I think Uniqlo has been doing well giving a balanced quality and price point. Also I was introduced to COS past few years better quality prices higher akin to Zara but better stitching and that is owned by parent company of H&M too. Worth a try. The demand for fast fashion is waning off for me as my preference is now for timeless and quality wear. Buying less pieces to use often and long lasting is worth the premium and overall better for the environment than the green washing by a lot of clothing manufacturers . Being that you are a student I understand affordability is paramount combined with quality

Besides the massive cons of fast fashion, H&M was my first place, as well as Forever21, to begin expirementing and finding my own style. Just a while back, I was going to these places and trying on new pieces. Eventually, I began to see what I liked and what I didn't. Thus, I transitioned away from these places and began buying higher quality clothing that would last me a while. This only happened once I established my taste, and if it weren't for fast fashion, I wouldn't have been able to expirement. Of course, each person is different, but this is my personal experience with H&M.

I worked at H&M for a while, and it was pretty not great. Almost all of my coworkers were around my age, (19) including a lot of the managers. I now have decided to only work with *experienced* managers because they were pretty awful. All of my coworkers were part of this clique, and a lot of them were buddy buddies with the managers, and because I didn't fit in the clique, I had to be the bearer of the blame for just about everything. It was quite frustrating. I'd notice a lot of coworkers standing around and talking and not being productive, coworkers being rude, and coworkers generally being a$$holes, but because they were best buds with the managers, they always got off scot free. But on the other hand if *I* wasn't being productive non stop all the time, if the managers found my looking at my phone for even a second, they would give me this whole thing about how we "need to always be doing something." Then they would proceed to go to the break room and not do anything. At least, thats what it looked like. A lot of the times the managers would be nowhere to be found. That or they were all together with all the other coworkers (except me of course) standing around talking and not doing anything. Of course, if I ever went up to say something, it was always "why aren't you at the cash register?? don't you know its inconsiderate to not do your job and make everyone else pick up the slack??" Yeah, sure. If you insist. The most frustrating part of my job was that even when I was on my first week of working there, they would be short with me because apparently it was inconvenient that I wasn't already an expert at my job. No one would ever tell me things, and when a manager would ask me to do something that I've never heard of in my life and was never asked of me before, and when I would inevitably ask "what is that" or "where is that" or "how do I do that," I was given a great look of "wow, are you really this stupid??" Instead of an explanation of what they are asking me to do. And then they would be mad at me when I didn't do exactly what they had in their mind that they wouldn't tell me. See the thing that sucks about H&M, at least the one I worked at, is that on your first day they make you sit down and watch this hour and a half long presentation about how "we need to be inclusive!" And "we're part of a team! No matter what your pronouns are!" They were *incredibly* preachy about how you need to be "moral" and "inclusive" and "stand up for other people!" But obviously that only counts if your "one of us." It makes me angry and I hate the freaking double standards here. I haven't gone to an H&M since and I don't really care to ever go there again either. The whole thing was so stupid. Anyway, that is all.

I haven’t had any of their stuff fall apart on me yet, but I can say that the shirts haven’t degraded in quality, shown signs of wear and tear, etc. it seems new still. I know I can't afford a lot of expensive clothes. I'm rebuilding my entire wardrobe for $1000. Instead of mass-buying at H&M and Gap, I will only own a few great pieces and save up for quality brands. UNIQLO, massimo dutti, Zara, Frank & Oak, Levi's for jeans. So that each piece I own is great. I'll have no more than 3 bottoms, 4 tshirts, an oxford shirt, a sweatshirt, a merino wool sweater, an overcoat and maybe a few other pieces.

I've had basic shirts and bomber jackets from H&M last several years even with weekly gym wear and wash. 10 dollars for something you can wear weekly for years is pretty good. The biggest sell of H&M is not the price it's that american mid level brands (selling at 2-3x the price of H&M) don't typically have slim fit clothing if you have wide shoulders but a small waistline. If you work out and have an atlethic or slim build its really hard to beat brands like H&M and Uniqlo.

@@harshul9408 I'm from the Netherlands, I very rarely buy there now but it used to be a real mixed bag. Since then I've only bought a few oversized items, perhaps they shrunk a bit, but it's honestly hard to tell with these sizes, and the shapes are holding up well. The only old item I still have from H&M is a long white tee sized up, that one did end up getting a worse shape, but I only use it as an under-layer anyway, you only ever see the bottom hem. So yeah, for oversized fits and under-layers I'd say it's generally safe, but I remember anything standard fit getting quite a bit worse over time. Some sweats lost too much stiffness and lost their shape too, and the denim I got from there was really thin as well. Anything listed as heavy or thick probably will keep it's shape a bit better too, but I've also had pure cotton pieces go TOO stiff.

The problems I see with H&M is that their quality doesn't really match up to the brand image they're trying to build, and also, their website is so messed up. Don't get me wrong, some items can last nicely especially bottom pieces, for most of tops they just lose that "new clothing look" very quickly. For the second thing, sure you can shop in their web just fine. However they lack tidiness in their product lineups, sale items also often misleading with price changing from one color to another, sizes available are ridiculously small or large although the sale just started. Imo they can learn a thing or two from Uniqlo. Their products are quite plenty but being marketed concisely.

I've never understood this obsession with "new clothing look" I wear my clothes until there's holes in them or the zipper falls off. Usually 5-7 years for most pieces. Sure some of my shirts have some minor stains, or the color has faded, but that doesn't mean they're unwearable.

If you have an issue with the thigh area, jeans wise, try G-Star. It's a Dutch brand, and as we are a cycling people, there is more room in the thigh area, and many of their fits/ styles also come with elastane options, for additional comfort and stretch. When it comes H&M I only buy their knits when on sale at a significantly reduced price, as they too often have synthetic blends, sometimes even from the women's department as I am short, and the women's hemlines are a bit more flattering.

I feel that 501 issue deeply. I searched far and wide for a nice pair of classic regular fitting jeans. I wanted something quality and timeless. My first instinct was to go to Levis, but for my thighs to fit properly and the calves not to looked flared, I needed to go two sizes up, meaning the waste was far too large. Ultimetely, I settled for the Arket regular jeans in organic and recycled cotton. Great fit and wash, but I fear they won't be the most durable jeans in my wardrobe...the search continues.

I'm kinda poor, so H&M is one of my favorite clothing stores I can actually afford. Also I'm a Swede and this is one of the highest quality low budget brands we have. The only one I'd say is better is Dressmann, as in better quality but similar price ranges, but wider range of sizes and slightly more mature style. I'm 36/30 in pants which is hard to find. But yeah I've bought many jeans, hoodies, tanks and underwear from H&M. Also I actually like that a lot of their black clothes fade to brown. Far better than those that fade to some kinda sickly green. I have a hoodie from H&M I bought back in 2013. It's completely brown by now (used to be black) and the cuffs have torn a lot. What bleached it was mostly the sun, actually. But I keep wearing it like "it's intentionally trashy." I also have a very thick, knitted zippered hoodie (wool/polyester blend) with fake fur lining, from that brand, which keeps me warm every winter. I dunno how long ago I bought it, but maybe 2015. That one's gray and stayed that way. My favorite blue jeans are also from that brand. Had to get them in 36/32 though, but I wear them cuffed. I've always had thick thighs, so I'm kinda used to pants being tight there. I don't ever really think about that. So yeah, I got a lot of clothes from that brand.

As someone who has primarily worn H and M for years I can with confidence say, that while the fabrics are not as premium and the stitches not as well finished as the expensive brands, my garments have lasted. I use them everyday, wash them every week on high temperatures, iron them, sweat through them and so on. H and M pieces, if you know what to look for, last. My recomendation is, check for fabric thickness and do not buy prints. Other than that, really no complaints. People are way to snobby nowadays, H an M clothes do not fall apart.

I had never heard of h&m until I moved to Norway. I lived in Norway from 2006-2009 and at the time I was in middle school to high school. H&M was one of the only places I could afford to shop. At the time, I also like the clothes more than I do now (although I haven’t looked at their clothes in a long time). I think it’s a great store for people with a lower budget and for younger people. After I stopped shopping at h&m I moved on to Zara and mango which I think is the natural progression, I shopped here from high school to college. But now I am 29 and I find the quality of theee clothes lacking. I won’t shop at these stores anymore. I’ve been working in the fashion industry for a number of years now and have a new rule for myself that I won’t shop from stores I am not receiving an employee discount from unless the company I work for does not sell a particular product like I worked for Ralph Lauren but they don’t sell women’s underwear so obviously I had to get that elsewhere. I have access to employee discounts and exclusive sample sales so I tend to just seek a job from a company I love so my wardrobe can be filled with their products. I can’t tell you how many club Monaco cashmere sweaters I now own.

As a black man I never forgave H&M for their “coolest monkey in the jungle” scandal (google it), but fast fashion brands in general I stay away from. They’re designed to be low quality that won’t last. I know the fashion industry in general isn’t that environmentally friendly but at least the more premium brands last longer which is better for the environment. Also more premium brands often use better materials that are more environmentally friendly (cotton, wool, cashmere etc)

They have some clothes that are quite nice but you have make sure to read the labels to check what the clothes are made of and if they're really worth buying. Also, the clothes get faded very quickly and they stretch or shrink after one wash.
