As Eddy Izzard once said, ""No, I wear dresses. They’re my dresses, I buy them. It’s like when women wear trousers, they’re not cross-dressing. They’re not wearing men’s trousers, they’re wearing trousers.”

Harry shouldn't be required to label his sexuality to be allowed to wear feminine clothing. He actually doesn't owe us disclosure about his sexuality at all, which is weird and obsessive thing for so called "fans" of Harry who claim he's queer baiting to care about. If they truly supported lgbt+ people, they wouldn't force us into boxes (like labels, which are a choice) then get pissed if we don't feel comfortable with them. People forcing him to disclose a label for his sexuality when he doesn't want to are weirdos.

many many people take baby steps into coming out by starting with saying "don't label me" or "unlabeled" because they aren't ready to come out. That is totally valid. If Harry never goes any further with public sexual identity, that is valid. It's none of our business really. It took me to 50 years of age to come out as bi...everyone has their own pace and their own journey etc...

Regardless of gender or sexuality, people should be allowed to wear what they want. If cis straight men wearing stereotypically feminine clothing is queer baiting then wouldn't the same work for cis straight women wearing stereotypically masculine clothing? Defining what one group can and cannot wear will automatically define what everyone else can wear. Just entertaining the idea of attaching gender and sexuality to clothing verges on toxic masculinity and the idea that if cis straight men wear anything out of the norm they are not real men. Wearing a skirt will not make a cis straight man gay or a woman, it's just clothing. Clothing is a form of self-expression, it does not define one's gender or sexuality. This argument makes me think of what Shawn Mendes has said about people speculating about his sexuality. Just because he has qualities that some think are feminine he has to deal with rumours about his sexuality.

If he is 100% straight and still uses non labels then that is problematic. I’m a bisexual guy who is still in the closet. I came out to two of my friends only in the past and one of them stopped talking to me. If I ever come out to my family, I’m sure I’m going to loose most of them. All this I bet a straight person won’t have to go through. They don’t have to go through discrimination not just from public but from from their families too. So if he says he doesn’t use labels then I would think he is not straight

honestly, thank you for bringing up the issue that's been frustrating me when it comes to people gendering clothing like this and acting as if straight femboys aren't a thing or insinuating that men aren't allowed to wear 'feminine' clothing styles without needing to be gay, because that harms everyone in the long run. Merely wearing gender non-conforming clothing does not make you a queerbaiter
@RealElongatedMuskrat
@RealElongatedMuskrat 2 года назад
Definitely. This is a bit of a random example but I was thinking this very same thing a few days ago when I saw someone say something along the lines of "he thinks he's such a big man and dresses like a queer" regarding Hasan Piker. He paints his nails and wears little pearl necklaces a lot, but other than that he dresses in a very stereotypically 'masculine' way - some people are so narrow minded in their ideas of clothing, gender and sexuality that an otherwise 'appropriately dressed' (in their eyes) straight cis man wearing nail polish and necklaces makes him 'look gay' and that that is inherently shameful. Those kind of people and their narrow view of the world are the ones who benefit from this bizarre policing of clothing. By accusing people of queer baiting for dressing how they want, you put them in a box based on a perception of them in the same way that people who say things like "eugh you wear nail polish, that's gay!".

One bit of context here is that Harry Styles was shipped with the other male members of One Direction for years. A large portion of One Direction's fanbase was significantly emotionally invested in him being in relationship with other men, and a proportion of those got so into it, they believed that the relationships they were projecting were 'real'. Basically, Harry x Louis (or whichever other band member) was treated in the same way as, say, Sherlock x John from BBC Sherlock or Dean x Castiel from Supernatural. Obviously, the key difference is _he's a real person_ . But I think that's one reason people misuse the term queerbaiting - they view Harry Styles as if he is a character in a tv show, and the 'showrunners' have been 'teasing' them about his sexuality for years. Being so invested in the sexuality of another real person that you view their sexuality as something made 'for you' is gross (real-person fanfiction makes me very uncomfortable for this reason). Of course, there may be other reasons people accuse him of 'queerbating' - but the fact that the man being accused of 'pretending' to be gay is the one who was fervently imagined to be in a relationship with other men by millions of people as a teenager, through no action on his part, is...ironic. It must be such a weird whiplash for him.

I can't with people "oh he is just dressing for himself" there is no such thing when you are a celebrity. All visual messages are political, it doesn't matter if he intends to or not, but he is in fact sending a message about gender and sexuality and getting publicity from it, while, at the same time making a clear effort to not compromise himself as an lgbt or straight man. Both this ambiguity and aesthetic didn't happen by accident, the are *decisions*, choices that he made and influence the career of a multi milion dolar artist. It is far more complex than "clothes have no gender, he is just being himself..."

The only thing I can distinguish is him being straight and white. I don’t see the difference with what lil nas wear and what Harry wears. At least with what they show up with on the red carpet so again is why Harry getting that privilege? I feel like people appreciate it when Harry does it because there is expectations places on straight men and gay men by nature pretty much goes against that. Also Harry and most white men have the privilege to play with with gender and fashion because they don’t have to fit into this narrow masculinity that pic men have to.

So-your comments about about who gets to lend themself to which sources of fashion politics and power (because as you point out, Vogue just means more than GQ in the grand scheme) is fundamental to the other discussion that most of your commenters seem to be focusing on, about Harry Styles’ (or anyone’s) obligation to publicly disclose and/or discuss his sexuality and its relation to his sartorial choices. And in an every-day, “normal” (wtwtf that means) situation, I would agree that we should respect Harry’s privacy. However, Harry-however unknowingly, and I choose to believe he’s probably naïve about this stuff-has no idea that, by tapping into these iconic images, he’s playing with fire, especially when we bring up people like Prince and Li’l Nas X, because of the music industry’s terrible history with LGBTQ+ and people of color. Prince became so powerfuls and iconic that young people may not remember that MTV literally would not play videos featuring people of color (including Michael Jackson). (The first time I ever saw Prince was in 1984 on American Bandstand and I could not figure out why he wasn’t on MTV because I was white and my privilege was like a set of blinders). Interestingly, germane to your discussion of Harry’s choices of gender outsiders to emulate, David Bowie called our MTV on the air in 1983, and then Michael Jackson’s record label threatened to pull their catalog when he released Thriller, to finally strong-arm this cable channel into physically representing two of the most talented and visually iconic artists of their generation-partly because Bowie checked his privilege as the kids say. The reason why I bring this up here is because visual representation *is* power. These people aren’t just mannequins or random pop culture Kardashian type icons. They make their livings from the music they record and especially (in today’s music business) their live performances-the bigger the arenas, the better their lives and the longer their careers. If Harry Styles should be saying anything, he should be acknowledging the hard work that Prince never stopped giving us, because copping those poses on those motorcycles cuts a little close to a man whose legacy I think we still haven’t come to terms with here in the States. Perhaps the fact that he and his team are not American might make them a bit tone deaf to some sore spots for us Americans-but it’s a conversation someone should be having at Gucci, whether their intention is to honor, provoke, or a little bit of both. I know this is a lot of heavy stuff to lay on a fun fashion roast channel, but fashion means more than people flitting around in little outfits, which is why we’re all here. And Harry and the team at Gucci better go give the guys in Duran Duran and Japan a big ol debutante’s curtsey. As Nick Rhodes said, “It’s not feminine style; it’s a new kind of masculinity.” Snap. Roasted ❤️❤️😘

I think the reason why Harry gets the ‘better shoots’ and gets generally better people involved with said shoots is the fact Harry is straight…I know people are gonna come at me with their own thoughts and opinions on that but it my opinion he is (using the ‘he doesn’t like labels’ comment, is a lie, Harry never made a statement about not liking labels…he was asked ‘in your private life have you ever labelled your sexuality’ and he replied ‘no, I’ve never felt the need to’…that answer in no way states he doesn’t like labels and it certainly doesn’t indicate that he’s LGBTQ, in fact it has the opposite affect as all people are assumed straight unless they state otherwise, straight people have never labelled themselves straight as they just are, wrongly or rightly so, therefor straight people haven’t labelled themselves straight as ‘they’ve never felt the need to’). Anyway, Harry being a cis gendered straight male, who is currently in a relationship with a woman is gonna make far more of an impact on the front cover than someone like little Naz X who is openly gay and does wear women/feminine clothing regularly (Harry does not). If little Naz wore that dress on the cover of vogue or was wearing the green big jumper dress in a photo shoot, he would look great undoubtedly, however it would to be expected and not as impactful. Unfortunately gay men have this preconceived notion about them that they’re all flamboyant and all want to wear womens clothes etc so having an openly gay man wearing those clothes isn’t a conversation starter, it doesn’t ask the question can men wear feminine/woman’s clothing, if anything you’re gonna get a fairly homophobic response (unfortunately) but a straight guy doing it kinda opens more doors to the possibility of more men in general being more open to feminine clothing. Ps. My apologies if this makes no sense, it’s 2:30 in the morning for me and I’m shattered😬

I personally think the queerbaiting comments as a whole should just be ignored, I think acknowledging them brings some validity and attention to the point, the existence of such a take itself represents how synonymous the queer experience and presentation of a “different gender” has become and to truly move forward ignoring these “queerbaiting” takes would show people how out of touch and painfully stereotypical their takes are. The fem/masc representation does not equal sexuality sentiment needs to become more mainstream and acknowledging views like these as even somewhat valid/debatable will put the wrong impression on some types of people (mainly straight cis men probably lol) and might potentially gear them away from exploring this type of expression themselves. I think anyone presented with these opinions should just roll their eyes and turn their shoulder.

I cannot be sure, but people are most likely pressed because of past incidents of queerbaiting as a costume to gain popularity, similar to wearing styles of other cultures and then being able to remove the costume and benefit from heterosexual privilege, white privilege etc. They want to make sure that they're actually being embraced, vs pandered to because it's popular right now

Luke brought up the very important question “is it fashion or are you just thin?” And I keep seeing these posts about how much “bolder” Adele is with her fashion now when she used to be more conservative with her wardrobe, and I can’t help but be frustrated. It’s not that she’s any bolder than she used to be, it’s that she is now a size that more brands will style. She’s not more more fashionable, she’s just thinner. She has more options. I’m glad Luke is pointing this out.
@jbtfp
@jbtfp 2 года назад
yeah, it it’s just sad that she could only start expressing herself through fashion once she was thinner? and if you were an outsider just looking at how her outfits progressed when her body changed it kinda reinforces the idea that you have to be skinny to be fashionable, but like you said, it’s not that she didn’t want to express herself through fashion when she was bigger, it was because she couldn’t.

Yeah Adele always looked fabulous, but her wardrobe didn’t vary much. She knew what she liked, and what looked good on her, and kept it to that. Now that her body is different, there are more things that look “good” on her, so we see variety. I still think it’s all very in-keeping with Adele’s 60s-esque style. Her hair and make up remain much the same, beautiful blow outs and 60s eye make up. I love it. I love her, I wish the world would just let her music be the conversation, not her body.

My issue with harry is less with him and more with the people who have made him out to be the pillar of gender deconstruction and inclusivity for men. When there have been so many openly queer men especially men of color doing it for so much longer. And people really act oblivious that his whole stylist is a nonbinary person who most likely was breaking gender norms and embracing clothing has no gender and is fluid, just not in the public spotlight. He isn't queerbaiting but unfortunately some brands are already out there capitalizing on his look to do just that.

The fact that people are saying that Harry is queerbaiting is so hypocritical to me. The LGBTQ+ community (which I'm part of) claims that clothes and fashion shouldn't be based on gender or sexual orientation but then they be hating when men like Harry (who doesn't label himself) wear "femenine" clothes. Like? If women can wear suits a man should be able to wear a dress, but simply because he isn't open ab his gender or sexuality people just assume he is straight and start saying he is "queerbaiting" AND even if he was indeed straight he should be able to wear those clothes. One thing that I agree with is that I don't think he should be the face of idk "Men wearing femenine clothing" bc a lot of men in the past (queer or not) already have wore these "groundbreaking" type of clothes, but the fact that he is highly praised for it or like some people say that he is "overhyped" isn't his fault, that's just some fans taking it on an extreme level or saying it as exaggerating compliments

It seems that there is a portion of the LGBTQ+ community that gatekeeps certain things and claims them to be “gay”; it is quite frustrating to the people who want everything to be shared. I however can understand them deciding that trends can be for “gays” to more easily identify someone they can relate to.

I assume Harry wears what he likes and doesn't care what body the designer had in mind at the moment. As long as he is happy in his clothes that is what matters. His sexuality is his own business. I don't understand why people get so invested in who someone else sleeps with. Celebrities are human too and are entitled to privacy if they want it. Also, his clothing doesn't determine his sexuality.
