Hello sir, I am just about 1 week away from my half marathon. Attempting the 90 minute for my debut half marathon. Put in a lot of work over the build 16 weeks. Thank you for all the great content! 3rd august had a popliteus flare up which had me out for a little bit. Body is sore, getting treatment and recovery next week. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Good luck out there Elliot. Hydrate well, run a negative split and run those tangents correctly. You have sub 1:30 in you

I've definitely got into the heart rate training. I've also invested into a chest strap monitor to give more accurate results. It's definitely got me to run easy runs slower. Now I'm going to focus on keeping my tempo runs in the appropriate range, a lot of times I'll go into the threshold range and stay there. Got a 12 mile tempo run in a couple weeks I'm really looking forward to 🤣

I follow my heart rates quite closely, but during the run I only adjust paces based on my heart rate on threshold runs. Easy and recovery as well as everything faster than threshold I go by feel or pace.

Oh heck yes . . . almost EVERY athlete uses one. You don't have to watch it while your training but it's good to analyze later. It's *data* and you can't have too much data. Just watch any video of an elite athlete, they always click the lap button on every lap but they don't look at it when they are training. If you train on the same course a lot, you can compare one session against another. I also do trail run-walks where I run when my HR drops to 120 and walk when it hits 140 (rinse and repeat for 2-3 hours). When I'm doing hill sprints I just go as hard as I can for an hour and try to hit 1000 calories for that hour but only about once or twice a month. In the last year my best was 987 cal in one hour. Now that it's summer I'm hiking mountains and mostly ignore the HR except if it gets up to a point that I can feel it pounding, then I look to see what my heart rate is it just out of curiosity. I use a simple POLAR M400 with a POLAR H10 chest strap but sometimes I just use my phone so I cannot see the display. Sometimes a mountain hike is 7-8 hours and the M400 battery lasts only 5-6 hrs now that it's a few years old. Today was a "recovery" hike and Strava gave it a relative effort of 136 but Wednesday's effort was 444 for the 4 mile up hill section with 3900' elevation. My hardest effort day hike had a relative effort of 838 . . . i just find it interesting to go back and look at all the data from two years to now playing with how it's sorted either by calories, time, distance average HR or relative effort. One of my hikes it shows I burned 6,111 calories in 7hrs 20min and I was almost crawling back to the parking lot :o) Did not hit a total *wall* (as I was just walking) but I hit a *fence* LOL

Always enjoy these training talks, especially since you've been there and done it 😃 I actually ran Biwako mara (lake biwa) this April, it's changed a couple years, smaller event and easier to get into now. Have you run it before ? I'm wondering what you think about this. Currently I run 40k long runs every other week with 3x10k@mgp or faster. As this is getting easier, do you think it's better to keep increasing the pace in the stints or increase the stint length so up to 3x11k, 3x12k or 2x15k and so on ?
@rundreamachieve
@rundreamachieve Месяц назад
I've never run Lake Biwa but did hear how absurd the qualification standards were (in the past) to get in. I like your long run set up. just ensure to alternate those harder efforts, allow for an easier long run after those harder MP efforts. Nice work man. I would increase the pace one weekend, easy long the next, increase stint length the next weekend, easy long then start over on pace again. Hope this helps.

For someone who is trying to eventually BQ, would you use heart rate training? 80/20 with 80% being easy pace?
@rundreamachieve
@rundreamachieve Месяц назад
Of course but sparingly...easy days should be 100% on "feel", hard days should be exceptionally difficult and hard...a proper tapered, well-trained athlete is going to get that BQ.

Is 6.00 min/mi for a tempo run too fast for a sub 3hr marathon goal? Or...is it good to experience this so 6.52 mile pace feels easier?
@rundreamachieve
@rundreamachieve Месяц назад
a tad too fast, temp pace should be around 10 seconds slower than AT pace (6:29 mile pace). So, around 6:39 mile pace...that being said, some time spent around 6 minute mile pace IS definitely good to get that goal race pace to feel easier. Keep up the superior work. You are definitely fit dropping paces like that.

Hey coach I have my first 5k of my season in 3 weeks and my goal is to run sub 18, today I did a 10 mile long run where I progressed from 7:00 to 6:30 for 8 miles, ran my ninth at 6:17, and my last mile was at 95% effort and I ran a 5:48 which is exactly sub 18 pace. Would you say I am in shape to run sub 18?
@rundreamachieve

Yes! That type of workout shows you have the capability to do it. VERY well done. Keep up the superior work

maintain your volume until 10 days out, drop 60% once you hit 10 days out. Light runs, 3x800m, 6x400m workouts, 4 days out do 6x200m@goal race pace. Hydrate, sleep and eat well. Good luck.
