IS HIJAB REALLY OBLIGATORY? || Samantha J Boyle

Hey my loves!! I hope this clarifies this entire situation for y’all.
So for every Quran verse, Hadith etc we should attempt to look not only at what it says at face value, but also interpret it with understanding of the context in which it was revealed and the impact the verses had on the people of the time.
There is clear agreement from the scholars on the hijab being obligatory. The general ayah governing the head covering is in Surah Al Ahzab surah 33, verse 59 where Allah azzawajal states, “O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to lower over themselves a portion of their jilbabs. That is more suitable that they will be known (as Muslims) and not be harmed. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.”
The word jilbab is one that is most often misinterpreted when it is translated. Without understanding the full meaning of the word, people could translate it to mean just modest dress. According to the Arabic dictionary, the word actually means khimar or headscarf. So here, this verse clearly says that we should wear it in order to be known as Muslim women and also to be protected.
Also in Surah Noor, Ayah 31, Allah azzawajal states, “And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision (i.e. lower the gaze) and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their walyathdribna bikhumurihina alla juyoobihina (meaning headscarf’s) over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.”
Also, what is referred to when Allaah says “except that which ordinarily appears," is clearly the face and hands. This is the opinion of Aisha bint Abi Bakr (RA), Anas ibn Malik (RA), Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA) and Miswar ibn Makhrama (RA) - all companions of the Prophet (S). Almost every tafsir commentary on the Quran will include some if not all of these authorities for this opinion. & the strongest view is that the exemption refers to the face and the hands because a woman May reveal the face and hands in her salat (while everything else must be covered) In the context of the ayah, it confirms the practice of wearing the headscarf and covering everything else except the face and hands.
It’s also stated in hadiths that when this verse was revealed (al nur:31), it is narrated by Aisha (r) in Bukhari and it is authentic, that women at the time tore their fabrics of decorations from their clothes and covered themselves properly. Some people might be like “oh this is just their interpretation of the verse” but these are the early generations who heard and understood in a way we didn’t, and if they had of understood incorrectly then the prophet would have definitely corrected their practices. There is not text, Hadith or even possibly to even suggest that this might be speaking about something different. The scholars are in complete agreement over this topic. There’s no debate amongst them about whether or not hijab is obligatory or not, and they have agreed upon it from the time of the prophet until now, with no debate. Allaah knows best.
|| It’s a good day, I hope you’re feeling it ||

Suhanallah very well explained mashaallah! I just wanted to add that people argue that the term hijab was ordained only for the wives of the prophet, and that is technically true because in the Quran “hijab” literally is a veil, like a dark curtain that separates and prevents from seeing through, while today the term has been commodified to mean headscarf. In the Quran, headscarves are referred to as jilbaabs, and the one I’ll focus on- khimaar. Linguistically khimaar means something which originates on the head and flows down, similar to a goat with all white hair except for its head and neck being black. This definition is also supported by the remnants of the word in other parts of the world the Arabic language reached back in those times, like Somalia. In Somalia a headscarf is a khimaar, and most accurately, the one piece you slip on (again like the goat). This term is known to have meant headscarf and that is ordained for all believing women, so when you hear someone arguing that hijab is just for the wives, tell her she is right, but that the definition of hijab in modernity has evolved to be a synonym to khimaar and she is required to wear the khimaar.

They are basically trying to put their own opinions into it and that's just not right. Who are we to have an opinion on what the creator has stated. It's just upsetting. Also whenever someone mentions the truth they are classified as the haram police which is just crazy to me. Please stop generating Lies on God & Quran . To those who say , "Headcovering is Mandatory" , please do not put lies on the Creator. Read along to know the evidence. 👇 No where in Quran has God instructed women to cover their hair. Nor such statement can be found by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Say "Do you see that which God has provided for you, you make some of it Unlawful (Haram) and some of it Lawful (Halal)?" Say "Did God allow you to do this? Or do you tell lies about God?" [Chap 10: Verse 59] Wearing a headcover is not Obligatory. It has been interpreted wrongly to make it appear so by the Saudis & Iranian theologians. This is very unfortunate that the Patriarchal interpretation is being imposed. It is doing no justice to what actually God had said in the 7th century to the 7th century Arabians God has no where mentioned this nor do we find any source from Hadiths where Prophet has instructed women to cover their hair. In fact many other scholars have mentioned that in Hadiths they only find it as a cultural practice not something that Prophet ordered it to the Arab ladies. Overall "Modesty" is the key. And covering of the chest is what God had said in Quran to the Arab ladies who already wore Khimar as a part of their customary dress which was also worn by idol worshipers . In Chap 24 Verse 31 , He had revealed to Prophet to tell the believing women that their vulgarity was obvious if they did not cover their chest , so cover it with the Khimar that already was worn by even idol worshiping Arab Ladies & other non-believing Arab Ladies since it was their customary accessory of their cultural norm dress worn by Arab ladies of Jahilia time. By classical scholar , Muhammad Asad , a Austro-Hungarian born Muslim journalist , traveler r, write r, linguist , thinkerv, political theorist, diplomat and Islamic scholar. Asad was one of the most influential European Muslims of the 20th century. His Translation 👇 Al-Nour (The Light) - Chap 24: Verse 31 " And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and to be mindful of their chastity, and not to display their charms [in public] beyond what may [decently] be apparent thereof; hence, let them draw their head-coverings over their bosoms......" the Arabic word Khimar ( Head Cover) used in the Verse 31 , is a headgear , which was worn by the Arabs even before Islam came , it was a part of their ancient desert dress , which was used in protecting from the extreme hot climatic conditions of scorching heat wave under temperatures of 42°c & 45°c which the desert dwellers were expose to . And the Creator uses the word Khimar because Arab women of Jahilia time were already wearing it . Hence Divinie specifies its correct utilisation that is to keep their Chest covered with it . The instruction is not Hair Covering or Head Covering by Divine but the chest covering . That is the difference brought forward . The object of the 7th century is mentioned but its specific utilisation is emphasised . And Muhammad Asad's explains very well the history behind in his commentary found in this RU-vid video 👇 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zFgd8wRy8AY.html This Video is by a Convert Muslim lady who use to wear hijab . Not a single proof can be brought forward from any Sahih Hadiths of Prophet commanding women to cover their hair . @@sophiadream43 I wasn’t referring you to specifically lol, I was explaining what you pointed out in my video and what I meant by “we hear and obey”, while you were trying to twist my words as if I’ve said something incorrect. Whether you like it or not, it’s haqq for us to seek knowledge and then hear and obey the rulings. It’s written in both the Quran and the sunnah so if it’s something anyone disagrees with then that’s something they need to fix within themselves! :) the whole video is about those that try to compromise the deen with their own opinions, that’s why my comment addressed that - not because I said you’re trying to compromise the deen. If you’re not doing that then I’m not sure why you felt attacked.

The Quran only tells believing women to draw their khimar/headscarf over their chest 24:31 and to not display their adornment around certain men. If you read that verse in its context it talks about being able to relax your dress code around children who do not know the sexual aspects of women. It is obvious adornment means sexual body parts such as breasts, butt and thighs. Hair is not a sexual aspect. The verse also says not to walk in a certain way/strike your feet to make known what you conceal of your adornment, obviously about showing your figure off by walking in a certain way, sticking your stomach in and butt out etc. Before prophet Muhammad pbuh most women covered their hair because that was cultural but they wore it in a way that left the chest area uncovered. The Quran simply says to use the headscarf to cover the chest area. Today most converts around the world do not wear a headscarf before they convert, there is no command for them to cover their hair at all. It's clear the dress code is to dress modestly, if some feel more comfortable covering their hair there's nothing wrong with that, but to say it's a commandment is untrue.
@Zara-er3xn

And besides this it is said 'that is more suitable that they should be known and not harmed' I don't understand how some people understand from' it is more suitable/ it is more likely ' being an obligation. Let's take an example: Studying a university degree is more suitable/ is better to have let's say. Is studying a university degree obligatory? No, but it is better to have. But there is no problem not having it.

Why The women, at that time, had to be knows as Muslim in order to be safe? Why not just teach not to harm any women? Nowadays headscarf is not protecting you from anything, if you were to be harmed you will regardless if you wear headscarf or not. What about situation where wearing headscarf’s can actually expose you to danger (e.g Eastern European countries). God prescribed this rule to protect women, sure not to put them in danger, so how applicable is that teaching for a women living in a islamophobic society ?

Sarmin Pro it would be similar to wearing a short t-shirt covering 99% of your stomach area, but then the t-shirt being a tad too short meaning a bit of the stomach is visible. Essentially, it just defeats the whole purpose. If you are going to wear it you should embrace all of it, no point half-arsing it... sorry for the vulgar language. Its in my scottish blood lol 😂

Sister I am not going to go in depth why Hijab is not obligatory, It is an opinion of some scholars which was dictated by their environment and society. There is a context behind the "hijab" but it is not obligatory, now if a woman want to wear it, I have absolutely no objection, but for anyone to claim that this is actually a decree from Allah, is disingenuous, dishonest, or uneducated on the topic, anyone who studied Islam from all aspects would come to realise that the Hijab is not compulsory. There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever, there is a historical context that has been kept buried by some out of ignorance and by others with an agenda.

Salams Samantha, As a revert to, I am in two minds about this. I have read alot into this topic and at the end of the day we are saying “ scholars agreed that this is mandatory” but then the obvious question has to be asked…. Why are we listening and following men who are NOT the messengers of Allah SWT? When the words of the Quran are already clear and perfected…. Quran also warns us of false hadiths and messages from those are NOT messengers/prophets of Allah [7:185] “Have they ever reflected on the wonders of the heavens and the earth, and everything Allah has created, and that perhaps their end is near? So what message after this 'Quran' would they believe in?" [45:6] "These are the Verses of Allah We recite them to you in truth. Then in what statement after Allah and His Verses will they believe?" We didn’t need help interpreting adultery, gambling, murder, alcohol etc from the Quran because it’s clear, just like the verses of modesty, it’s clear….. Which is what? For BOTH the believing men and women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts.. Allah swt knows the past, present and the future, that’s why gambling was even mentioned in the Quran as being sinful, even though back in that time there was no casinos or poker machines, Allah knew there would be in the future so it was mentioned in the Quran.. If Allah knew more then 50% of his divine creation (humans) would not be wearing the scarf fast forward 1500 years or having this controversial debate don’t you think he would have warned us in the Quran the importance of covering the hair, and at least the punishment for this? No where in the Quran you will find this clear information or a punishment for a woman who does not cover her hair …. When committing sin ie. zina, murder etc… both men and woman are held equally accountable in the Quran and also in the sharia law… I find the Quran being FAIR and JUST for both sexes, as it should be, I find the Quran saying that haram is haram for both men and women and halal is halal for both men and women…. The dress code is EXACTLY the same when it comes to being fair and just, so tell me why do the believing men not wear their outer garments on their head to cover their hair? Even though It was reported that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) wore a Yemeni burd (cloak) and a green burd and he wore a jubbah, qaba' (overgament) at that time ? Scholars have confirmed the dress code of our beloved prophet Muhammad SAW, and still no believing man dresses like this unless it’s on a Friday ? As it’s “sunnah” Don’t you think the covering of one’s head is sunnah for both men and women then??? To my next point, You had made some references from the Quran with some text out of context… You mentioned at the start of your video the first verse Al-Ahzab 33:59 “O Prophet! Ask your wives, daughters, and believing women to draw their cloaks over their bodies. In this way it is more likely that they will be recognized ˹as virtuous˺ and not be harassed. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” Point one: do you notice at the start how it actually says “ASK” and not tell ? Asking is giving the free will and option… Telling is a command Asking is an option. Point two: draw their “cloaks” not the word jilbabs like you had said in your video. Point three: both men and women would wear cloaks, khumurihina, khimar, covering ( outer garments ) what ever you want to call it, at this time and it WAS a part of their culture for many reasons mostly being that it was the most appropriate thing to wear for the environment that they were living in the desert involved sandstorms, extreme heat, dust etc.. list goes on…so yes, a cloak/jilbab etc was worn by BOTH genders as a “norm” I understand and appreciate your argument here but how can be sure what the actual definition is, to make our own assumptions that Allah “meant” covering of the head to, just forgot to mention it? Like how can we say this? Are we really over here preaching what Allah actually meant? When we also say, Allah makes no mistakes? Then to go on and spread DAWAH like we know 100% ? It is not allowed…. We are not allowed to lie.. It is our duty to spread the word of ALLAH SWT, and the words from the actual Quran… What I see nowadays is those spreading the word of scholars who are mostly men and their interpretations, which is wrong. I would love to see what the world would look like if the scholars were predominantly females….. would the rules and laws be the same as they are now? * “The Word of your Lord has been perfectedin truth and justice. None can change His Words. And He is the All-Hearing, All- Knowing.” (Qur’an 6.115) Let’s also not forget this authentic Hadith * Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah does not look at your appearance or wealth, but rather He looks at your hearts and deeds.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2564) So why as Muslims are we more focused about the outer appearance when it should our hearts and deeds? May Allah guide us.

Now I am covering everything except my hands face hair and neck when I go out, then maybe next week I am going to start to try and wear baggy clothes when I go out (the problem is almost all my trousers are tight), then I will add the headscarf. I am doing it like this so I dont get overwlehmed all at once and quit, and my parents want me to do it like this to make sure I am dedicated to wearing a hijab. Inshallah all will go well.

Best of luck sister! I'm on the same boat, my mum is the same. I've worn baggy clothes for a few years now, and iA I'll give the headscarf a go one day.

@@humnab4892 Thank you so much! I currently only wear baggy clothes, and have done so for about half a year. In a few months I will go to University Inshallah, so then I can put on the hijab. Good luck to you!

It is cultural..u should listen to what actuak scholars and sheikhs have to say about this instead of random people on the internet

@@Pnsbcor i have seen scholars opinions and stuff. I found the best source is the Quran itself. Read the Quran and see what the words mean. Thats the best source for anything in Islam

@happycamper4734 personally I read it and the quran tells the women to cover their bosoms that is the only order I have understood Allah to have given the women from that verse I'm interested how u perceived it?

Thank you for the video! 🙏 just my personal thought: I can’t understand some girls/women covering their hair but they don’t put any effort to cover their chest, they use tight clothes i.e you can clearly see the curves the shape etc, it’s almost like we have a weird thought that if your breasts are big that’s when you have to cover them up otherwise it’s fine...like for real tho we love to pick and choose what we want to follow from the religion 🙄

Well said. Dont be like christians, where they pick and choose what they like from the words of god. If we really believe in Allah, we must believe in allah entirely.

Why should women feel more protected with hijab? And why do women distinguish as muslim, as you say, throw hijab? Why not through their life, their way they live and love others? I am born as a cristian, and I believe to distinguish myself through my way to live, not what I wear!

Hi sister. Great video. I heard the Ted video some time back. And I was actually convinced. Hearing your video, now I’m not so sure about what I had been believing to be true. I must give this a lot more prayer and thoughts. U did an excellent job explaining and giving proof from Quran. I’m a very new revert. Over here where I live in the U. S. in the SOUTH. wow. Hijab is like walking around like your from another planet. Lots of harassment too. Anyway, I really think your video was good. AlhamdulillA. Tried to find u on Instagram but there are so many Samantha’s. Help??? Lol

don't force yourself to wear hijab if that put yourself in danger. even we are allowed to eat pork if nothing to eat other than pork meat. but don't stop there and make it an excuse for you to not wearing hijab forever. moving to safer place where you can wear hijab more safely may be a good idea.

Subhanallah I completely agree! Honestly I’m so sorry but I don’t have any sources to recommend you about it subhanallah, it’s one of the topics that I myself am yet to find good info about! Majority of what I find is biased and written from European perspective!

i have a question. so obviously in the Quran and Sunnah it is clearly stated that a big part of wearing the hijab is modesty in order to stray away from catching male attention. However, in modern day it seems clear to me that men are no longer drawn towards the simplicities of a women’s features such as her hair, but rather than her body instead. -this knowledge is also rooted in basic science as well. So i completely understand the need to cover up and *dress* modestly in Islam. but i do not understand what modesty in the modern world would be interpreted as, because back then i could understand why you’d need to cover up your hair. especially since showing much more than that wasn’t *nearly* as normalized as it is today. Could a fellow brother or sister please educate me on what purpose wearing a hijab serves if hair is no longer associated with male attention?

The Word Hijab doesn’t just mean to cover the hair, it means to cover up your whole body. Allah (SWT) says: “And to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment” *(Quran 24:31)*

But it doesn’t say to cover your neck and ears and every single inch of hair? Just what ordinarily appears can definitely be interpreted so many different ways… obviously head scarf yes but there are ways to wear a veil that doesn’t cover as much as hijab. I find it very honestly confusing
