Is Honda CB650F still competetive bike in 2018?

This is an in-depth road test of Honda CB650F model 2017 which is the same for 2018. Despite the fact it was highly updated for 2017 (new design, EURO 4, more horsepower, new exhaust and sound) there is a question wether it has something to offer in comparison to dominant 2 and 3 cylinders in the category of middle-weight naked bikes.
The change we see on the market is very interesting. It is not that long ago when the market was full of Hornets, Bandits, GSR600, XJ6, GSX650. Nowadays it is very hard to find 4 cylinder bike in a mid-performance category of naked bikes. Actually Honda together with let’s say Suzuki GSX-S 750 and Benelli BN600 is one of the last survivors.
In this video I talk about characteristics of this bike and compare the pros and cones against all 2 cylinder alternatives which are mainly Yamaha MT-07 (XSR 700), Suzuki SV 650, Kawasaki Z650 and some others.

Having toured on both MT07 and recently the 650F I have sold my Yamaha for the Honda. More solid in corners, better on open highways in truck traffic, sweet exhaust, hauls ass without feeling twitchy like the MT07. Added a gear indicator and lots of inexpensive parts on order from Thailand... inline 4!!

That's interesting. I currently own a Yamaha MT07 and am looking at another bike. I was looking at the CB500X as a sensible option but was worried about the lack of power but perhaps the CB650F is a good replacement. I've toured Europe on my MT with my girlfriend and found for the most part it was ok but the suspension was way too soft. Even with the rear on full preload. Years ago I had several Hornets and loved them, I just never thought this would be a good alternative as most say that Honda's are boring. Thanks for the comments, you've made me really think about it.

I have owned twins from 3 different manufacturers and yeah there's a lot to like but bought my 2017 650f last year at a damn good price. While I sometimes miss something that has a little of extra character (I owed a aprillia before) I have always loved the middle capacity inline 4's. I don't have much self control so an engine you have to work to get the power works well for me. It's a shame.in Europe that we won't be seeing many if any mid sized inline 4 screamers soon and I don't regret buying one of the last ones. When you mentioned about it's reliability long term and being maybe less than a twin due to having more components I get what you are saying and you are right on some levels, but Honda make and always have made stonking inline 4's that live forever, that's one reason why I was so happy to buy into Honda. Anyway great review and glad someone understands why this bike was made rather than get hung up on mt07's and spec sheets.

Nice review! I recently bought an MT-07, but it was a very very close decision between that and the CB650F. The Honda is a great bike. I didn't experience any of the reported engine buzziness on my test rides. But then my bike at the time was a 2000 Suzuki bandit - so possibly I just didn't notice! I chose the MT-07 because i.) I got very a good deal on the outgoing 2017 model, ii.) lighter weight iii.) better fuel consumption for commuting iv.) modern dash. For the record I do miss an inline four and regularly crave one (although less temptation to thrash my bike). Downside of the MT-07 is that the throttle can occationaly be twitchy at low revs. Apparently the suspension on the MT-07 is a weak point, but to be honest I haven't had any issues. The CB doesn't sell that well in the UK so there is a chance it will be discontinued. I think if they updated the dash and saved some weight it might help.

As a learner using both SV650 and CB650f the Honda steers better at lower speed surprisingly and feels lighter although I know it isn't. No gear indicator is pretty disconcerting though, especially as the engine is so smooth and revvy, the SV is much punchier low down and therefore more likeable somehow IMHO. I intend to try an MT before I buy.(all bikes are bloody great mind you;-)

I was looking at the video, very interested on your opinions on the bike thinking... This road looks a lot like the one in Roque de los Muchachos (in the island I am from...) and then you said "riding in the Canary Islands" and it hit me! Goodness, I've ridden that road many times but I didn't expect to see it on this video! Such a great spin to do! I hope you enjoyed your stay! :)

Imo 600cc 4cylinders are the way to go for starters if you want to start with more than 75hp. The super smooth and predictable powerdelivery makes it easier. I am currently starting on a CB600 Hornet and its a blast. I restricted myself to 5-6k rpms in corners. Then gradually removed this limit as i got more experienced and confident.

AG Coarseman but each bike serves a different purpose, a gold wing is predominately a cruiser long distance bike. The CB650f is a middleweight commuting machine and in comparison to its competitors it is slightly too heavy for its class in my opinion. Remember I own this bike so I’m not hating on it. But I’m also talking about for its purpose it’s a bit porky. Lol

Very much everywhere in the net you can find reviews and owners showing off their MT07 on how good and versatile the bike is. Heard debates if its good for beginners, twitchy throttle cause of its tourquey engine, the word Hooligan for some and how really a blast and fun riding the MT07. The hype is true! But apart from being a very awesome bike, it misses one thing, its exhaust sound. The Kawasaki z650 is a good contender and cheaper for having a parallel twin engine, also fun and with the same sound. The Honda CB650f on the other hand makes itself apart from these bikes cause it runs with an inline four. Just cant ignore the mesmerizing sound it makes that I would choose this bike over even if to costs a bit more. For it is also practically the same bike with same fun, more power and beautiful sound... Nice review JF!

Is the 2018 still using the D222 tyre? Because that could be a contributing factor in your commentary on handling. A change of tyre for me gave a significant improvement in how the bike handles, particularly in corners. I went to Pilot Road 4. as to engine longevity, I have 132,000km on mine with oil and filter by the book. still feels good.

I got my full licence on the CB650F, once it's starts to move the weight it's not an issue unless you ride it in heavy traffic all the time and for short fellas they might struggle a bit if they don't be careful in slow heavy traffic, two things that really i dont like is the dash and the lack of upside forks. but for roads shown in this video is a blast to ride, i only that honda uses this same platform and engine a does a retro model to compete with the triumph street twin for example.
@Real_MisterSir
@Real_MisterSir 6 лет назад
I completely agree. They could even lift the upside down forsk from the old 600f hornet and put them straight on the 650f.. or maybe the forks from the discontinued 600rr perhaps - with a different rebound setup. I'm a taller rider so I really like the 650f size - however its weight is still too much, especially when you want to flick it around in city riding. I sure hope they address these issues for the next model, and they also add a retro inspired version of it. i would love such a 650f retro
@ripmax333
@ripmax333 6 лет назад
Daniel Kemnitz knowing honda they wont make the 650f lighter unless they re-make it with a 2 cylinder engine. Honda its not known for making light motorcycles especially when they build them to a budget. Light, fast and cheap, you can only choose two between these 3 options.
@Real_MisterSir
@Real_MisterSir 6 лет назад
I don't know, the CB500F is also incredibly heavy for its engine size, and its even a 2 cyl. The engine has nothing to do with it, nor the price. It's just Honda being stubborn. They could engineer a simpler and smaller frame, and make the engine itself be more load bearing so they save material.. But they won't. It's the same issue with the last CBR600RR. Honda claimed that there was no market left for the 600cc class, but in reality they just didn't sell because it was godawfully ugly. No one liked its looks, so no one bought it. All previous 600RR owners sticked with the older model because it performed close to similar, and looked 100 times better - yet Honda was stubborn and blamed it on the lack of a 600cc market. Funny how Suzuki, Yamaha, and Kawasaki are still doing fine with their 600cc bikes.. Honda needs a wake up call. We know they have potential to do so much better.
@ripmax333
@ripmax333 6 лет назад
Daniel Kemnitz i had a 2013 cb500f before i got my full license and the 500f feels definitely better, when i threw a leg of the 650f for the first time i felt immediately at home but i also immediately felt it heavier. I totally agree with you that honda is really stubborn, they focus too much to make real super friendly machines but nothing really exciting, buy exciting i don’t mean to do some crazy that might kill you as soon as you let the clutch out but there like nothing at least for me that really stir the soul from the honda brand. And they are all damn heavy compared to the competition, OR weighing just enough but then there underpowered, a perfect example is my CRF250L, screams for a 400cc motor!!

Peter D....your comments are subjective. I've only pointed out the significance of an awesome inline 4 in this category, whereby other manufacturers choose a 2 or 3 cyl. Btw...20lbs more weight than others in this category, is hardly a concern, given the huge advantage of a 4 cyl

Peter D I have to disagree on some points, I think it operates good in low revs. The wind noise is horrendous on the highway but through town it’s fine. Thanks for sharing a tour opinion good to read another owners opinion. 👍also I agree it needs to be under 200kg

I don't own this bike, but all these points are exactly why I have not got one yet. A fully fueled 600rr weighs 25kg less than a fueled 650f, if not more - and that is simply not good enough. It's a weight difference you feel, especially in the ability to change direction, and the responsiveness to immediate acceleration. I would so much like to love this bike, but the weight really keeps me away from it. I don't mind that it doesn't have 100+hp, I think around 90 is fine. It's a good deal more than its 650cc competition. A weight loss program would do wonders for this bike. -oh and also, a new dash!
@Real_MisterSir
@Real_MisterSir 6 лет назад
I am considering this, have had it in my mind for a long time. I dislike the weight, but the size seems to be good (I'm 190cm). I have stayed clear of the MT07 mainly because it is too small. Not overall size or power, but I just feel cramped on it. Same thing with the XSR700 which I really like, I sat on one and the position of the seat and the rear set just makes me feel like I am completely locked up in my legs and not able to rest comfortably. Idk.. If I can find a good deal on a used cb650f I might go for it.
@JFMotorcycles
@JFMotorcycles 6 лет назад
I think that for 190 cm it will be still small. I mean, it could work but I would prefer higher/biger bike. My XSR 900 for example is for our height allright.
@Real_MisterSir
@Real_MisterSir 6 лет назад
That's true.. Though the XSR900 is out of my budget - especially because I can't seem to find any used ones where I live. The 650F is at least a lot better than most of the other 650 class bikes.

An '07 Honda Shadow Sabre 1100. It's a fantastic, reliable bike. I wanted a Kawasaki ER-6n, but the wife nixed the idea, as the Honda already had a nicely upgraded passenger seat, backrest and expensive leather saddlebags for our short-range touring. The ER-6n really put a big grin on my face, hence the test drive of the new Honda CB650f, which proved disappointing in terms of ergonomics.

Not to burst your bubble but even the cb600 Hornet meets the 75hp of the MT07 between 7 and 8k rpms. Just compare power diagrams and youll see the actual power output isnt really that different (besides the obvious higher top hp for the 650f.) The acceleration at slower speeds can be massively improved by changing the rear sprocket. Both the CB600 and CB650 are more stable bikes than the MT07 make you feel more condident at high speed cornering (150+kph // 90+mph). But the shorter wheelbase and higher seating position of the MT07 make it easier to attack small corners or whip around city traffic. A higher and broader bar for the CB650 can sort of compensate for that
@HeyAddieImTojo
@HeyAddieImTojo 6 лет назад
I agree, i know you speak the truth because my Bandit 600 from /00 makes 72,4 hp at the wheel. I also changed the rear sprocket so acceleraton is better. I don\t want to go 200km/h on it anyway, but going to 150 much faster is more fun.

@JFMotorcycles
@JFMotorcycles 6 лет назад
Very tough question to be honest. You can start on any of them and you will probably not make a mistake. It then would be about the style you like, also which dealer is closest, maybe about costs of having each of those motorcycles. I personally would probably take one of the two cylinder bikes. SV650 have even some assistants which can helps beginners (assistant which help to start the engine, the other one to work with clutch)... but maybe it is better to start without assistants and create a solid habits. MT-07 is an amazing motorcycle and nicely improved for 2018. Probably is the best of all of these.

I got my license less than 2 weeks ago (although I'm almost 30 yo), and already tried the '18 MT-07 and I liked everything except the sound. I know that I can't compare the two bikes, but I've tried a '98 Hornet with Carbs, and it felt amazing. Unfortunately I can't find a CB650F to test drive, but I'm with a dilema, MT-07 vs CB650F. It will be used for daily drive to work.
@DiHalamanRindu
@DiHalamanRindu 6 лет назад
i'll take CB650f just because its 4 inline. people complain its slow compare to other 4inline 600cc category. yes, because its not a super sport bike like r6 or zx-6r. its a sport touring. design for daily use without burning your money. very good MPG for 4 inline. same MPG as mt07 which is only 2 cylinder. faster than mt-09. just a little slower than mt-10(a 1000cc 4 inline). imagine that. so if you looking for daily use or commuting to work with awesome 4 inline sound. cb650 is perfect. But! if you are a speed freak. don't buy any honda bike. honda nowdays only focusing more on commuting.

Yes, but the crank crank has much less mass, so it will turn quicker. I saw a comparison between the gsxs1000 and 750. The 750 actually weighs more than the 1000 but was much faster to turn because there is less gyroscopic effect from the crank and other engine internals.

The thing to remember about official weight figures is that they're often misleading and inaccurate, for one reason or another. Unlike many manufacturers, Honda's curb weights are usually pretty close to what you will be riding. So it might look a little more portly than other bikes, but it's really not that bad. Plus it's still a four cylinder at the end of the day, and there is no budget at this price point for fancy manufacturing and materials to save weight, either. Swing a leg over one and Honda's "mass centralisation" is really noticeable, in that it feels lighter than it is.

@JFMotorcycles
@JFMotorcycles 6 лет назад
It is not unfortunately. From my memory if I am saying right Hornet 600 had about 10-12 HP more and Honret 900 in some versions even 20 ... Hornets was significantly faster.
@lillaprince2219
@lillaprince2219 6 лет назад
Nope. Definitely not significantly faster. Over 160kmh the Hornet pulls ever so slightly stock for stock. I have a larger sprocket on my CB650F. My buddy on a stock Hornet. I leave him a couple bike lengths behind to 160, by 190 he'll catch me. After that both bikes aren't pulling like freight trains anyway. CB650F stock pulls on the MT07 from the take off.

If you are considering a 600cc 4cylinder bike i would get the original honda cb600 Hornet. It has a bit more power (100hp). Also how is the engine weaker "down low"? it matches the 75hp of the MT 07 between 7 and 8k rpm but other than the 650 2cylinder bikes it still has 4k rpms to play with. Its not really slower or weaker and keeping up with those other bikes wont be a problem exept maybe if you accellerate in the wrong gear.
@george8966
@george8966 6 лет назад
The FZ07 has more torque down low making it feel more urgent for low end. The fzo7 is designed to be punchy low-mid, and this bike is designed for the bulk of the power to be in the mid - top hence his comment.

Hi JF The Honda CB650F suitable for using long road ? and could you compare how comfortable between CB650f vs CB500X?
@JFMotorcycles
@JFMotorcycles 6 лет назад
Hi there. What sort of long distance you mean? I could certainly imagine to ride it for some holidays let's say 2000 - 3000 km in a few days if the road is nice. There are better bikes to do it and Honda CB500X is definitely more comfortable. However CB500X is honestly boring in comparison to CB650 :) Some people tough likes it still and still would choose the CB500X so in the end of the day you have to try it for yourself to see.

only 90bhp??? My cb599 from 2004 makes 96bhp and it has carbs. 50cc difference too. Honda is too conservative in the power department
@JFMotorcycles
@JFMotorcycles 6 лет назад
That's right. But in some cases it really make sense to me. Like Honda Africa Twin with 95 horsepower is really an ideal machine. Why to have in Enduro 160 HP? :)
@duncandrummond726
@duncandrummond726 6 лет назад
It is not apt to compare this bike to the 600RR. the 650 has lower compression, different bore to stroke ratio which leads to lower redline. a combination that produces less power even with more cc.
@StumpyVandal
@StumpyVandal 6 лет назад
It’s to get the bike below the A2 licence requirements in the EU. There’s a 45 hp limit if you’re on an A2 licence and any bike can only be restricted by up to half it’s hp. Hence the 650 is only 90 when the 1998 Hornet 600 was 102 hp and lighter.
@a.k.9660
@a.k.9660 6 лет назад
The 650 reaches the highest torque much earlier than the 600 hornet. High torque at lower reps is often borne by less hp.
@drewtaylor6623

Also the 650 engine is full of emssions the carb hornet didn't have any .

Im planning to sell my z800 for the cbr650f version. Yeah why not upgrade? Im not rich and i heard the maintanance on the cbr650f are very low which is ideal for me. Love how the bike looks

how on earth is the weight on this bike such a hotly debated issue? My old CB600 weights ~200kg completly full and i have no problem attacking left right combinations at high speeds. Cant imagine a 185kg bike to be so much better. Even cornering at 170kph with strong breaking before feels pretty good. I think the point of balance is much more important than the actual weight... up to a certain point. A 250kg bike will be more sluggish than a 200kg bike but a 185 can feel pretty much the same as the 200kg bike because of its ergonomics and the different points of balance
@smugslug995
@smugslug995 5 лет назад
You have a point. Most problems when riding are not the bikes fault. They come up because of the riders inability to handle the bike.

Very odd review. It is only a 2 year old model and it has more modern hardware than any other middle weight naked (engine, breaks, suspension, frame, swing-arm), yet you talk about it like it is some ancient artifact. Bizarre. And why? Because it is 4 cylinder? Bro, open your eye, a lot of bikes have 4 cylinder...
@JFMotorcycles
@JFMotorcycles 6 лет назад
Actually the engine is way way more old school ten on let's say Yamaha MT-07, MT-09. I am not saying it has an old-school brakes but yet many modern motorcycles has better, radially mounted ones. Suspension is fairly basic, again it is better when you look at competition. In the category of the middle-weight naked bikes there are actually not many 4 cylinders as you say but just a few of them: Concretely Honda CB600F and Suzuki GSX-S 750. That's it. And Benelli BN 602 if you want :)

You can check my video about Yamaha XSR 900, which is basically the same: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1SA-qQT04C0.html I don't think the throttle reaction is too problematic, too nervous at least on the model 2017 and newer. Truth is you need to focus really on riding and on the moves of right hand. It seems that Hondas or 4cylinders in general are easier to operate.
