Is Isaiah 53 about Jesus? 

I read the book of Isaiah last year and the person Isaiah 53 was referring to was supposed to see his offsprings. That means the person was supposed to have children and see his grandchildren too. Isaiah 53:10. The Quran said " seeking knowledge is compulsory for both men and women. Please, let's be eager to learn. Knowledge is the key to success. Let's consider if what Bart Ehrman says is true. 1. He said the Hebrew prophets were not predicting things that were to happen in the future. What nonsense. Listen to Isaiah. Isa_42:9 See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you." Ehrman has not read Isaiah. 2. Ehrman says that Isaiah 53 is not talking about the future at all and the verbs show this. No they do not. Future prophecies in Isaiah are often said in the perfect tense, as they are in the Qur'an, for instance Isaiah 9 is about the Messiah bringing the everlasting kingdom of God, clearly future, yet spoken as completed. 3. He says it is not about the Messiah at all. Of course it is if you had read Isaiah. Isaiah 53 is about the faithful remnant of Israel and the book of Isaiah says that the Messiah will be this faithful remnant. This is seen in the Jewish Targum from around the time of Jesus. It identifies the servant of Isaiah 53 as the Messiah: "Behold, my servant, the Anointed One (or, the Messiah), shall prosper; he shall be exalted, and increase, and be very strong. As the house of Israel hoped (or, waited) for him many days ..." (Targum of Isaiah 52:13-14) This interpretation comes from the observation that the Messiah is the righteous one (Is. 9:6-7, 11:1ff) and the salvation of Isaiah 53 brings the Messianic covenant (Is. 55:3). 4. Ehrman says it is about Israel not the Messiah. Please read Isaiah. The Messiah is the true Israelite who fulfils the destiny of Israel. Ehrman has made a distinction that does not exist. What the king does he does for the nation. Again, if Ehrman had read Isaiah he would see this: Isa 49:3 He said to me, "You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display my splendor." Isa 49:4 But I said, "I have labored to no purpose; I have spent my strength in vain and for nothing. Yet what is due me is in the LORD's hand, and my reward is with my God." Isa 49:5 And now the LORD says- he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel to himself, for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength- Isa 49:6 he says: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth." Notice how the servant is going to bring back Jacob (Israel) and then be a light to the nations. That is, this faithful Israelite will have a ministry to Israel and then to the nations.

Objections to assumptions that Isaiah 53 is referring to a people: 1. The servant of Lord, pictured in the text, is first referred as the Arm of the Lord, but who is not recognized as such. Isaiah 53 : 1 "Who has believed our message? And to whom has the Arm of the LORD been revealed ?" If He is the Arm of the Lord, The Arm of the Lord is all powerful as God is all powerful, therefore it cannot be a people, because no people is all powerful. 2. Isaiah 53 : 8 "By oppression and by judgement He was taken away. Yet who of His generation protested? For He was cut off from the land of the living, FOR THE TRANSGRESSIONS OF MY PEOPLE, HE was punished". So that individual bears the transgressions of God's people among others. But if it is God's people who is bearing the transgressions of God's people, how can they also bear the transgressions of others as alluded in verse 12 and in Isaiah 52 : 15 ? 3: Isaiah 53 : 5 : "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed." The servant of the Lord was "pierced". I thank God because He makes His Word clear enough for those who put their hope in Him. 4.Isaiah 53: 3-4_: "Surely He took on our infirmities and carried our sorrows; yet we considered Him stricken by God, struck down and afflicted, But he was pierced for our transgressions,...". So He the Servant of the Lord is "considered" bearing the punishment for His own transgressions whereas in fact he was bearing the punishment for the transgressions of others. I don't know where this applies to a people, because the one supposedly referred here was deported in Babylon because of their transgressions. The punishment on the people was not assumed or "considered" as such, it was a fact, prophesied before it happened. 5. In the previous chapter that introduces the Servant of the Lord it is said in Isaiah 52 : 15 : "so He will sprinkle many nations..." in reference to the prophecy of Ezekiel 36 : 25 : "I will also sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols." How can a people sprinkle clean "many nations", if that people itself had impurities. The Servant of the Lord had to be spotless to provide purification to "many nations", and many nations means what it says: many nations.

Isaiah 53 is referring to the faithful remnant of Israel and not Jesus. In Isaiah 53:2-8, the kings of nations continue to humbly express their heartfelt confession. Only now they finally conclude that the nation of Israel suffered throughout their long and bitter exile as a result of the mindless sins of their own citizens. In the past, these world leaders surmised that the Jews were stricken and smitten by God because they stubbornly rejected the gods of the other nations. But now, as they bear witness to the glorious messianic redemption, they are astounded. They will finally grasp that Israel suffered as a result of the destructive arrogance and devastating reckless behavior of their own peoples. From Isaiah 53:9 through the following powerful chapters, the God of Israel alone is speaking. The Gentiles are listening silently. As in Isaiah 53, Isaiah 52 and 54 clearly identify Israel in the singular, suffering innocently as a result of the vile wickedness of the gentile nations. In addition, all three of these exhilarating chapters vividly describe the glorious redemption of Israel in full view of the gentiles, her former persecutors. For example, in Isaiah 52:4 the prophet recounts that “Assyria oppressed him [Israel] without cause.” This central theme conveyed Isaiah 52 - the nation of Israel innocently suffered as a single individual at the hands of the gentiles - is precisely the same underlying topic of Isaiah 53. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. This imagery of a tree struggling to grow in dry earth is a metaphor for the Jewish struggle in exile. A young tender plant in dry ground appears that it will die. The Jews were always a small nation, at times as small as 2 million people, threatened with extinction. In this verse Isaiah describes Israel's miraculous return from exile, like a tender plant that sprouts from this dry ground. Isaiah 53:8 (nkjv): ….For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. The phrase “land of living” (Eretz HaChaim) refers specially to the land of Israel. Thus this verse “He was cut off from the land of the living” means exiled from the land of Israel. Isaiah 53:8 concludes with their stunning confession, “for the transgressions of My people (the gentile nations) He (the Jews) was stricken.” Now look, I am giving below more examples from the bible to support my explanations. Again look, "the land of the living" means "the land of Israel". Look at the following verses of Psalm. Psalm 27:13 (niv): I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Psalm 52:5-6 (niv): …. he will uproot you from the land of the living. 6 The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you,… Psalm 142:5 (niv): I cry to you, LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.” Now read again Isaiah 53:8 (nkjv): ….For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. Now my question is that in Isaiah 53:8 who is confessing that "For the transgressions of My people He was stricken." Who is confessing here? Who is that "My"? The answer is “the kings of gentile nations” which clearly shows that the term "He" is referring to the nation of Israel as a whole. Now about Isaiah 53:10, what we have only seen so far for Isaiah 53:10 is the Christian translations, such as the KJV, or the NIV. But these translations are not accurate. To clear your understanding more, let's revisit the verse of Isaiah 53:10 again: "The servant must admit his wrongdoings (guilt). If the servant does this then he will have a long life with many descendants." Now again read Isaiah 53:10 (KJV): he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. In Isaiah 53:10, you can see that the servant is promised long life and seed. Let’s explore this verse of Isaiah 53:10. To begin with, Jesus did not have any biological children. The Hebrew word זֶרַע (zerah), which appears in Isaiah 53:10 - it is the blessing bestowed on the servant - means “seed.” This Hebrew word can only refer to biological offspring when used in connection with a person’s children. Again the Hebrew translated as "long life" is the phrase יַאֲרִ֣יךְ יָמִ֑ים (ya’arich yamim). Both the NIV and KJV have translated this as "prolong his days" -- which means lengthen his physical life. The New Living Translation has "He will enjoy a long life". Jesus did not live a long life. He probably died at about age 33. So the passage says that the servant will live long life to see many physical offspring (children from his body) -- something that Jesus did not do either. Jesus was not rewarded with children and a long life. So this is not a legitimate prophecy about Jesus.

Yes, Isaiah 53 is absolutely about Yeshua. Compare also with Isaiah 63:9. It is the Lord that saves. Man cannot save himself. The Lord performed signs and wonders through men like Moses and Aaron because they trusted in the Lord (not in themselves) to save them and guide them. All of our righteousnesses are as filthy rags. There is none that does good. It has always been by faith, for Abraham believed God and it (Abraham's faith) was accounted to him for righteousness. Isaac was the child of faith, because they believed in God to keep his promise. Not Ishmael who was the child of works.

If I understand Bart Ehrman right, he claims that the survant in Jes 53 is Israel. In 53:9 Isaiah claims ”He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.” Does this sound like Israel? Was it not because of their sins Israel were ”destroyed and exiled by the Babylonians”.

Of course if one views the Bible as real revelations containing real prophecies, they will view it as such and will see the clear evidences for the predictions, but if one has an atheistic view and does not believe in the idea of prophecies, they Must assume they do not refer to future predictions. Is it not possible that Isaiah was saying what he foresaw to happen through the power of God, which is why past tense was used (because he had a vision of it)? Not entirely true because Ezekiel did predict future events and also Enoch. Then you have Jesus being different from others prophets in that he had a precursor prophet , John the Baptist (whose sole purpose seemed to be preparing the arrival of Jesus). If you really want to know who this is about then you must look at Isaiah 54 where it tells you this man is of the Smith bloodline from his father. I wonder why Paul never mentioned Isaiah 53 in any of his letters, even though he was highly learned in the Torah and Jewish Traditions. Bart Erhmann is the most ridiculed scholar among his contemporaries for his biased and poor studies. 1) The prophets of the Hebrew Bible were not predicting things that were to happen hundreds of years in advance. They were speaking on their own context and delivering a message for their own people to hear about their own immediate futures. Answer: "Prophets are not predicting things hundred of years in advance?". That is false and a lie, because Gods prophets like Moses, David, Daniel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, etc have prophesies that are yet to come or have not happened yet after more than 2500 yrs. Example: the destruction of Islam in Zephaniah 1:5 verse 1 God said "I will utterly consume....verse 5 "...them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops". The destruction of Saudi Arabia in Isaiah 13, 21, 47, Revelation 17 & 18. 2) In this case, the author is not predicting that someone must suffer for people sins at all. Many readers failed to consider the verbotences in these passages. They do not indicate that someone will come along in some later time and suffer in the future. They were talking about a past suffering the servant have already suffered although he will be vindicated. And so, this is not about a future suffering Messiah. Answer: "The do not indicate that someone will come along in some later time to suffer in the future". That is false and a lie. Isaiah 53 begins in Isaiah 52:13-15 and the word "shall" denotes that it will happen in the future. Verse 53:1 NIV started "Who has believed our message and to whom the arm of the Lord been revealed?" This indicated that it is a prophesy. Even in Luke 4 indicates that the Jews knew and they are expecting that someone is coming according to Isaiah although they have no idea who. Bart Erhmann said it was talking about someone who have suffered. This is false understanding. The passage is just describing the event that would happen. Verse 52:1 clearly says "Behold my servant "shall" deal prudently". That means it has not happened yet at the time it was written. 3) In fact, it is not about a Messiah at all. This is a point frequently overlooked in a discussion of the passage. If you will look that the term "Messiah" never occur in the passage. This is not predicting what the Messiah will be. Answers: Just because there is no word "Messiah" it means it is not the Messiah. Messiah or Mashiach means "The Anointed One" or the "Chosen One". Chosen for what you may ask? The answer is to do God's work (to serve the Father - as servant) which shows in verse 53:10-12 and Isaiah 40. Majority of Biblical scholars agree that Isaiah 53 talks about Yeshua. 4) If the passage is not referring to the Messiah and its not referring to the future he is going to suffer. Whom is it talking about? Here there really should be little ambiguity. As I mentioned this particular passage - Isaiah 53 is one of the four servants songs of 2nd Isaiah. Answer: There are several points here: 1) The passage is not referring to Israel. The passage clearly differenriate its subject from the audience. Verses 2-12 said that "He" which means a single person. While verse 6 says "all we like sheeps have gone astray" and "the iniquities of us all" mean all people (the world) besides "He". 2) The servants mentioned in Isaiah are: a) the Messiah (Isaiah 53, Isaiah 42:1-4) and b) God's people (Bart is referring to in Isaiah 40 to 65). However, the servant here does not refer to the Jews or Israel in the Middle East. But to a different nation most scholars have overlooked. The reason Israel (Judaism) is not the servant is because: 1) They are no longer God's people. They worshipped idols and have forsaken God (Psalms 106:35-40, 1 Kings 19:14, 2 Kings 17:40-41) 2) God divorced them (Isaiah 50:1, Jeremiah 3:8) 3) They were cut off by God (1 Kings 9:7) 4) They will be destroyed (Isaiah 65:11-12) 5) The servant is another nation called "the isles" or "islands" (Isaiah 40:15, 41:1-8, 42:4, 42:10, 42:12, 49:1-3, 51:5, 60:9) 6) Isaiah refer to the people who eats swine flesh and therefore not Jews (Isaiah 65:4) 7) God called the isles as Israel... from the ends of the earth (Isaiah 40:1,8,9) 8) God's servants do not do animal sacrifices and burnt offerings like Jews (Isaiah 43:21-23) There are more references outside the book of Isaiah but these alone debunked and exposed Bart Erhman and his supporters ignorance of the depth and mysteries of the Bible

Isaiah 53 is a double edged sword. It doesn't talk about what prophet, how they would suffer, etc. It could be mohammed, or veyr indeed jesus but it doesn't talk about crucifixion.

Some of the harshest criticisms of Israel's wickedness in the Bible is found in Isaiah. Against that, is another Servant Who is righteous enough to bear the sins of the world.He is called Israel, and yet is seen as being distinct from Israel, and alongside Israel. His worldwide effect is marked by being the light of the Gentiles, bringing Jehovah's salvation to the ends of the world, bringing many to righteousness, bringing healing to the nations, being an astonishment to the Gentiles for His suffering for our sins. This is describing, not the general righteous of Israel, but One, the most righteous of Israel, King Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth. None of these worldwide effects can be attributed to the general righteous of Israel. Yet they happened, and are still happening. Jesus healed me, and is healing me of my wickedness to this day. He has and is healing millions around the world.

In Acts 8:26-40 you read: Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is desert. 27 So he arose and went. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.” Zech 12:10 3. Rather than mention the Machiyach (Messiah) it uses the colourful and descriptive term for him “The Arm of YHVH“ Isa 53:1 4. There are 2 servants in Isaiah, Jacob (Israel) and the Suffering Servant (the Mashiyach). Consider the impossibility of Israel bearing the sin of Israel in verse 8 making no literary sense “By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished” Isaiah 53:8 I would suggest reading Isaiah 52:13 to 53:12 for yourself and ask how this could possibly be referring to anyone but Y’shua.
