"Getting this boat up to scratch" & "I love when a lack of a plan comes together" Just two of the reasons I love your videos! Congrats on the new boat and I'll keep watching.
Steel rusts Aluminum disappears (electrolysis) Fiberglass delaminates Wood rots Pick the hull material based on what kind of work you feel comfortable with!
@@berndschiffer364 I have a Triumph 191 made out of Roplene...a great inshore/nearshore boat and tough as hell...lasts forever and no paint or hull maintenance required.
With cathodic protection steel lasts until you die. Aluminum is the most common metal on the surface of the Earth and cheap, hard to weld correctly. Fiberglass is for corvettes, wood is for fire places. Aluminum actually protects itself with a layer of oxidation, the pyramid on top of the Washington Monument in DC is made of Aluminum, it's doing ok. If Al gets to be next to a different metal it goes crazy. Unless u use all of one kind of metal you will have problems. All steel is easy to work with.
Hey there Stu, what a fantastic project you have started on. I look forward to the next installment. You have picked up some great advice on the comments too. Love to Dangar Island!
Just over 18 months into a TOTAL rebuild of a 30yr old, steel, 8.8m ex-commercial longliner. Basically stripped her down to the bare hull, new cab and engine. Now well into putting things back ! Can’t wait to watch your progress.... the more you dig, the more you find !
Dangar Marine just seen the second episode, looking familiar though mine had been ‘dinked’ many times. Ended up having to replace the cabin deck plates and structure as water had run in over the yrs and rotted it out.
Oi Stu......great project, can't wait to see all the gremlins you uncover and how to fix them. You deff inspire lots of us to tackle work on our own boats. Thank you for all the great content, please keep it coming.
3 suggestions. Fit a dry stack to in and weld the transom shut. Install 2 bilge pumps with dedicated wiring to battery. Fit a boom over the hatch covers to ease that battery change and dive tackle. Good idea on the chain locker, just don't leave it open to salt waterl Good idea on the gunwale cutouts.
I have a Detroit Diesel 4-53T in a Chevy Suburban. They are great engines, used in logging, construction, boats, everything. I was always told there are two types of mechanics, regular mechanics and Detroit mechanics.
Fantastic Stu! That’s a great looking boat with lots of potential. Really looking forward to all the future videos showing your progress with her! Congratulations!
This engine turned out to have a huge number of problems with it and is currently getting completely rebuilt. I do appreciate the suggestion though! :)
That looks like an awesome project boat Stu! I'm super excited to see more videos of it. Also, I wish I could be at the channel meetup, it sounds like fun. But my boat and I are stuck in Florida. Thanks as always for the videos!
My brother and I were going to buy a steel sailboat and live on it. But, health and life got in the way and we both retired to a piece of land in the country. Sometimes you just wait too long to live your dreams.
If you ever get a runaway Detroit there is two ways to make it stop running, you have to absolutely cut off its air supply, the smallest gap in the shut down flap and it will still run. The other way is to flood the intake with carbon dioxide.
Boat looks clean inside didn't see any rust, Ive looked at a few as well and they have been terrible, I just walked away, Ive have had Detroit Diesels 6v53 and 8v71 , love those engines great sound, looking forward to more vids on this
my advice..... dont even mention changing a boats name when in the presence of the boat. It will hear you and cause trouble even before you change it. Mine did and i then decided to keep the name the same and the trouble reversed into joy. No bull !!! I nearly sold it. Now i love it.
...finally....if you find when asking other boaters if its ok to change the name and more say it is than its not, its because the rest who would agree with me, are with Davy Jones and cant speak for themselves !!!
Pretty sure that is old Charlie the fisherman's boat. He sold it around 2000 and a yacht broker from gbm bought it and use to call it betty ford. It was his therapy.
Awesome. I’m loving this Stu. And to make it better for me it reminds me of the 32’ timber boat my grandfather built in the 70’s down in Eden. My dream is to own a boat like this one day. So glad to hear your not going extend the wheelhouse too.
best of luck with your new aquatic Money pit (B.O.A.T stands for "Bust Out Anouther Thousand" after all) but in all seriousness, it looks like a great project that should serve you well! --Rick
Hi Stu. Just saw this series. Looking at the boat lines. Knowing its a home owner built trawler. I think this may be a Bruce Robert's design. He is a popular boat plan designer for larger craft in Europe. Sort of like Glen L is to the states. Dont know much about steel boats so I will be watching for sure.
That's why i don't favor ATC type, they corrode and get stuck even in the "water-resistant" fuseholders. Difficult to remove without destroying the fuse. I am Not trying to sound negative, but take a long, close look at as many dripless glands as u can find on other boats, they can be fragile and shorter lived (thin wall, rusting spring) bellows. Don't do well around silty water. May need water fed to them. Setting the timing or rack: Search for a jimmy mechanic to help. Makes all the difference. Yours is prob good already. Could be just starved for fuel. If you're plumbing new lines dump the bypass into the tank Away from the draw, not near it. Give that inverter a sea toss, they're Battery Killers. It has probably already murdered your "spare" batteries. Substitute a Reasonable size inverter instead (small). Opinionated? No, just reporting the facts: every one of my customers were sure they had it all dialed in, every one of them killed a very expensive battery(s). One thing nobody seems to get: an inverter/charger is great for recharging its own battery. When it comes to maintaining one or two banks of marine batteries, they suck. So please just use a separate marine charger. AGM's are the bomb, i see lithium as more of a stunt. Buying that steel boat is a great idea. Really. I Love it. What's with the red spot on your (43 C?) Morse cable? Was that spot originally under the strap and slipped? Sorry to be so effing opinionated. I'm on your side. Never overplate. Always replace plate. You really don't need to be told this, but looks like those 3 ss bolts on the shaft have galled. If U can't find a snug fitting "flax ring", go up one size and pound it into a ribbon. Corroded shafts can rip apart packing over and over. Get some zincs going but don't overprotect. I Really get the feeling you're Way ahead of me on these things. Thank You.
I picked up a boat like that long time ago I think it was a little bigger than that I think it was a 30 or 35 foot same 471 diesel engine had the same problems as you bad bilge pumps it was leaking it almost sunk in the middle of the ocean I just picked it up around December it was cold in New York how to replace the shaft and seals yours is a lot better condition but I had fun working on it the holding tank was huge good luck with it
It’s in reasonable nick just needs finishing dripless seal there is many ,would pay to spend good bucks on a good one so no leeks , but good boat You could cover the top of the cockpit on poles many do for sun , but has potential, spend the bucks have a good boat , you won’t lose but a good drive line in the shaft area will help. ,will be watching thanks
Good news for steel hull boats. A green ceramic coating is coming on the marine market that prevents corrosion permanently. Also fire resistant to thousand devices F.
Hey Stu , I noticed your boat anchored up in the Marine Stadium this morning when I returned from fetching supplies. Hope you see this I'm on a boat called Albacore . Be great to catch up , I can probably give you a bit of local knowledge over a few drinks
Good luck with the new boat! Those old detroits are leaky but very dependable. I am impatiant to see the hull shape out of water. It will be interesting watching you go through upgrades and repairs. Does she run a left or right hand prop? I prefer a left hand wheel with a starboard helm or vice versa.
My 35' Inland Seas had bad engines due to mechanic not closing the seacock and taking the head off one engine to replace a valve seat. The engine's ingested salt water resulting in a low purchase price sadly it had cable, internet along with utilities in a marina downtown it turned into a condo. Still sad I didn't put the diesels in it but they were a good selling point
Never a dull moment on your channel. All the best with this project, looking forward to future posts. As a matter of info how longer does it take to get a private mooring after applying with roads and maritime?
Yeah, re-sealing the drive shaft shouldn't be too hard. I've already done a fair bit of cleaning in the engine room bilge so once it's dry on the hardstand I'd like to find a good paint to re-seal it with.
I just spent 20 minutes with PayPal to try to send you some money. It would’ve been easier to mail it. LOL I’ve broken each arm twice so I have an idea of what you’re going through. Love your channel I have a Ranger bass boat with a 115 Evinrude. Thank you much!
Thanks Tom, I appreciate your donation and your persistence with PayPal! Sorry to hear about your arm breaks, I think I got off relatively lightly. Great to hear you've been enjoying the vids. :)
Cool boat Stu, Hey one of our Deadly Catch boats capsized of the Oregon coast Dungeness crabbing. Lost 3 crew members. 14ft waves? Must have caught them off guard or a weight problem? Sad
