For numerous months I have been working to review the Gregory Baltoro 75L backpack and today, the Trail Review goes up as it is time to find out if the latest version of this famous pack is worth your hard earned money.
Maine Overnight Adventure Video : • 24 Hours on Maine's Co...

Link : www.gregorypac...
Price : Retail is around $320 - but at the time of filming I have seen it for around $225.
Weight : 5.22lbs
Colors : Dusk Blue and Orange
Sizes : S M L
Optional Liters : 65, 75, 85, and 95 which they refer to as the pro model
Pros :
Comfort : This pack fits like a glove…as the saying goes. It hugs the body in all of the right places while giving you good lumbar support which is adjustable. Excellent balance between the hips and shoulders. distributes weight very nicely. straps are super comfortable
Excellent quality
Easy to access pocket and gear - U-shaped access is awesome.
Good capacity
Stylish pack - I love the orange color.
Hydration bag is also a day pack - Offers 12liters of capacity. Very simple, not the most comfortable but it is useful.
Flexibility : Baltoro’s innovative pivoting shoulder straps and hipbelt play an important role in carrying comfort. Each piece shifts independently, so the pack remains level and close against your body while the shoulder straps and hipbelt move up and down. This feature is especially noticeable on extended climbs, where I could feel one side drop while the other raised up as I took a step
Included rain cover does what it is supposed to do; keep the pack dry. It works.
Waterproof hippocket also works to keep the rain out.
Manages weight as good as most external frame packs; 47lbs loadouts are comfortable with this pack and that says a lot.

Lots of places to clip and attach gear to.

Cons :
Weight : While Gregory has been dropping the weight of this pack over the years with each generation, this thing is still very heavy! Over 5lbs with the hydration carry day pack and included pack cover - this is not a light pack. With that being said, this pack is made for hauling so what you get with the weight is the ability to carry a lot of gear, food and water very comfortably.
Price : Full retail price is high; but the on sale price is great.
The Stretch Mesh water bottle pocket has a tendency to push empty bottles out while you are hiking. I’ve had this happen multiple times while on my adventures. To fix this you really have to tighten the compression straps
Breathability : while the back panel and hip belt are more breathable than ever before you are still going to get soaked in sweat when you are hiking. There is no way around it. It’s better than before but doesn’t compare to some offerings from competitors.
Small Pocket : The only disappointment is that the water-resistant hipbelt pocket is too small to fit a larger smartphone

Summary : At nearly 5 pounds, it’s overbuilt for those who want to travel fast and light, but if you value the extra cushioning and support, it’s one of the best packs on the market.

I've got a 75L version of this pack in Blue and after testing and trying many packs including Osprey Atmos AG, I've come to conclusion that Baltoro is the most comfortable pack when loaded with weight. It sticks to your back and doesn't slide down, you don't even have to tighten the hip belt that much. Highly recommend it. Yes it's heavier than some other packs, but due to comfort it carries its weight better! I also got Arc'teryx Bora AR63 and that pack has amazing suspension but it's twice the price. These two packs are my top picks!

Should I consider of changing my Tatonka Bison 90? Everyone says that Baltoro is super comfortable. Personally I don't feel any lack of comfort wearing my 3+kg Bison and 15 kg of stuff in it. Some extra free space is also doesn't bring any disturbance (I can always pull the straps). Will Baloro bring me into the whole new level of comfort? Because this can be the only reason for me to by this pack and I'm struggling to do it.

Vlas Bakhar I haven’t tried or seen the pack you are talking about so I can’t compare it. My recommendation is to take your camping gear to a store where you can try Baltoro and load it up. You should be able to feel right away if it’s right for you, just make sure you get the right size and adjust it properly. Picking a pack is tricky but on average a lot of people agree that Baltoro is very comfortable. If you can’t try it before you buy and you are happy with your current pack then I wouldn’t buy it. The only reason I bought it is because I was experiencing discomfort with other packs.

I also have the 75 long size pack I am 6’4 250 pounds. Love this pack it is the most comfortable pack I own and well worth the money. I am rough on my gear and have to say this is still standing very strong. The rain pouch is included and it has worked fine in heavy down pours which would ad more weight to the pack if it was to get soaked. Thanks Luke for another fantastic review keep up the great work.

Hey Luke, I loved the review and I did end up buying one of these packs used and I love it. I wanted to say that I discovered for that side mesh hydration pocket you can route the compression strap through the pocket instead of over it and it definitely helps.

This review also sealed the deal for me too. Mine just arrived as well. I am so stoked to take this beast into the wilderness. More than enough room to carry some luxuries. My only gripe is that those hip pockets are indeed pretty small, certainly too small for my phone, but I dont expect to need my phone at the ready like that anyway.

I had an REI Trail 70, but it was too big, not as adjustable as I wanted, and weighed over 5lbs. I returned it and got the Gregory Paragon 58 instead. So far, after several mountain hikes, I'm loving it. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the one reviewed here, but it has the same quality. Especially love the Velcro belt and torso adjustments- you can fit them to any size torso or waist. Retails at REI for $229, so it's a great pack for much less than the real high-end packs, and just as good quality.

Luke, I think that you said it all, and you did focus on the heavy weight of the pack. Bottom LIne, good pack, for heavy loads, durable, lots of storage, but heavy! Not really needed unless you are a miner, maybe a forest fire fighter, or if you are someone who has some need to carry lots of heavy gear. However, I would love to see you focus on packs with similar capacity, and durability, but at least half the weight of the Gregory Baltoro. Some companies to look at include the following: ZPacks, ULA, Mountain Laurel Designs, Gossamer Gear, Hyperlite Mountain Gear, Granite Gear, Osprey, Katabatic Gear, Superior Wilderness Designs, Mountainsmith, and Sierra Designs. Finally, I hesitate a little to mention this company because they went bankrupt under another company name, but My Trail Co was launched in 2015 by the same founders of GoLite, an ultralight backpacking company that closed its doors in 2014. The founders utilized the best designs from the most popular GoLite products and rebranded them under My Trail Co. My Trail Co manufactures the UL 50 backpack which is seemingly a good deal. Weight: 1 lb 6 oz Capacity: 50 L Price: $119 It's kind of a plain Jane pack but seemingly durable, light, and inexpensive.
@scottbainetwisted_keel_adv5821
I had one and when I bought my ultralight sleeping bag I decided to shoo for a pack with the right weight and volume to reduce my load and bought a 50 L O$p&# which reduced about 8lbs from what I did carry. But yes I do miss that pack in the winter for the size and volume not so much the weight it can carry. So I'm shopping now for a descent 70L pack and to be honest for the money difference I just may try to order a fjallraven tech pack. They have the color and style I'm looking for an yes it may cost $150 more by time shkooing and ha dling but I believe they may just be bomb proof.

Osprey does include the rain cover for their packs here in Sweden. It's weird that they don't overseas. Even on their 26l "Hikelite" which I bought this summer, it was included. (Great, GREAT pack by the way)

On the other hand some Osprey non-US models instead don't feature the removable daypack topcover. Apparently Osprey thinks Europeans need raincovers and Americans daypacks... instead of giving all of us both :p

I have a serious question about bags in your opinion. For hunting, camping and hiking, which bag would you recommend between the Gregory Baltoro 65L vs Osprey Atmos AG 65L? Keep in mind i live in Ontario so dealing with all types of weather and cold. I am open to hearing what other bag you may recommend as well for these conditions. I plan on loading it out, so looking for something rigged, comfy and something with a good warranty. Thank you in advance for your time

Large ALICE pack seemed just fine, and since there was nobody that was going to listen to any gripes it just fit great. Carried 90 pounds with the same discomfort as 60. The new packs are a luxury that I find it hard to believe people complain about. The worst pack made today is a very good pack.
@Reese842
@Reese842 6 лет назад
I had the atmos 65 ag size large, I didnt size properly ... I learned that I'm a size medium so the larger pack kept sliding down pulling my drawers down with it. The hip belt pockets were too small and the hip straps too long. Access to the side water pockets is nearly impossible for the less flexible folks. The front access to the main compartment of the baltoro is enticing, but I wouldn't be able to use an inside pack liner and forced to compartmentalize all my gear into waterproof sacks adding additional weight. I like the day pack and could see myself using it in town on a zero. In the end, I returned my atmos 65 ag to save precious lbs, but at a heavy cost as ultralight gear gets expensive.

As always Luke, great review and video. I have a gen 1 65 liter Baltoro. It is a nice pack with a lot of adjustments. It is a little on the heavy side, especially when wet.
