absolutely love you guys, watch u all the time on TBN. Thank u for proclaiming the gospel all over the world. Now I can watch u all tha time. Jesus Christ is King!!
I kind of agree with you. Aside from taking God's name in vain, ultimately words have no moral value, only meanings do. At the same time, I do avoid swearing because of the image it portrays in our culture, not because I think words themselves are wrong. In fact, some of what we consider swear words were completely acceptable in everyday speech at one time. As a Christian though, we should never be crass or speak evil, whatever word of choice. Not to mention, it shows a lack of intelligence.
This reminds me of a quote by Paul Washer I read recently: "[Alot of people] think that Christianity is you doing all the righteous things you hate and avoiding all the wicked things you love in order to go to Heaven. No, that's a lost man with religion. A Christian is a person whose heart has been changed; they have new affections." ~ Paul Washer, sermon, "Dating, Courtship, and Marriage."
Cussing is more about unresolved anger..it does not have much to do with intelligence. People who cannot consciously express their anger, tend to cuss more often. To say cussing is an unintelligent act, is unintelligent. On the other hand, cussing can be quite offensive, so maybe that would be an opportunity to minister, and therefore not become offensive by judging? We know in our hearts what is correct behavior and what is incorrect behavior for each of us. Cussing doesn't make you a sinner.
"Because we want life to be simple, we want God to give us a list of words which He forbids and be done with it. But we see in Scripture that within each of these four categories there are both unlawful and lawful uses When we take the name of the Lord in vain, we are swearing sinfully (Exod. 20:7). When we take our oaths lawfully, we swear in His name (Deut. 6:13). When we curse maliciously, we rail against the image of God in man (Jas. 3:9)." Wilson
i heard a sunday school teacher cussing and i said i thought she was not to say bad words and she said that its okay becaues she was outside of the church.I was sad becaues were to think of god at all times not just in church.
"Sometimes a vulgarity in one era is not a vulgarity in another-“So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall” (1 Sam. 25:22). And in many cases, we do not learn from the example of Scripture in these areas because our translations are cleaned up, and sometimes more than just a little." Wilson, Douglas. Fidelity (Kindle Location 84). Canon Press. Kindle Edition.
That won`t put you in hell before breaking any of the 10 commandments. You just have to break one law and you`re a goner. Thats why we so desperately need a Savior, Jesus Christ of course
I have trouble controlling my cussin while I'm at work or around my buds. around my family, in public, or with the Church, I never seem to have any trouble controlling it. What I don't want is for people to think that it is "putting on a face" if you are able to control it in one setting and not another. look at it as PRACTICE. if you have an easier time behaving Christ like when you are with Christians, imagine you are sharpening each other, preparing each other for battle with the world.
Christians most certainly do struggle with sin. And that term "struggle with sin" is what defines Christian, and is what Paul Washer is referring to: because the unconverted soul loves sin, there is no struggle going on. He doesn't care. The converted soul struggles with sin because he loves righteousness and hates sin, and doesn't want to do it, but finds his flesh weak, hence the "struggling." All of Romans 6 & 7 speaks on this, particularly Romans 7:18 & 7:23.
What about Paul's "Skubalon"word in Phil. 3:8? (Eph. 5:3-5) Clearly Paul does not mean that such sins should not be mentioned or described-he mentions them here. He is saying that such things ought not to be named in our presence in any way which tolerates or gives countenance to them. We live at a time when the world does not hesitate“swearing”), the words can be put into four general categories-swearing, cursing, vulgarity, and obscenity. - Wilson, Douglas. "Fidelity"
That is because the question at hand, as presented in the video, is whether cussing is a sin. I am saying while I do not believe words in and of themselves have any moral value, it is the meanings that do (and meanings of words change over time). I choose not to swear because of the negative social image it portrays, due to the meanings usually being crass. Intelligent people also do not usually resort to swearing because it's slang or just filler that doesn't add anything to the conversation.
When we think of false teachers as the apostle Paul does, the curse glorifies God (Gal. 1:8). When we avoid coarse and vulgar jesting (a coarseness which frequently has to do with bodily functions), we are doing nothing other than what Paul instructs (Eph. 5:4). When Isaiah rejects the self-righteousness of sinners as nothing better than a used menstrual cloth (“filthy rags”), he is being vulgar in a most holy way-in the interests of pure truth (Is. 64:6)." - Doug Wilson cont
What do you mean? I said I agreed with your sentiment to begin with. I just personally avoid a specific set of what is considered "swear words", not because of the moral value of words, but because of the meaning when used and the image it portrays in our culture. Same goes with drinking (but that's another discussion altogether).
If someone used the word "excrement" to insult someone or in a graphic and vulgar sense, I would find it equally appalling. Also, you have to realize that what you might feel is appropriate is not what a lady might be willing to tolerate. Men of honor do not subject ladies to inordinate amounts of vulgarity.
This is something I so need to work on when I'm angry I never cussed till I allowed my husband to rub off on me ugh not his fault by any means !! I just got used to it
It is not the Holy Spirit that leads folks to swear or to get tattoos. I personally hate it when I hear folks swear. Swearing is bondage. This "ME Generation" we live in swears too much. I can go on and on but I won't. I posted all this w/o watching this video just going by the title.
William Tyndale invented the English language, and translated the bible into English because the current language was crude and he wanted the words of the bible to be beautiful.
I don't think it's good to cuss but I always cuss when I get mad (not at anybody just to myself) and now I gotten to the point where it just natural and I am trying not to now but it's like some times I feel like some words just help me get my feelings out and I thought about how bad this is over and over and again and i need to stop
Also, when else do we use the world's standard of what is right and wrong? Society says that this word is bad and that word is bad. You go to a different culture and they say that those words mean something else, and they have their own words that are bad. Society decides what is good and bad?
I mean, it isn't a new trend, it has always been a thing. Personally, I have nothing against cussing, but I am very mindful of people who do not like it (which is most people that I know). If it is a sign of not having a large vocabulary, I am not sure why that is such a bad thing.
Whether Christian or non-Christian, you won't usually hear intelligent people cuss up a storm. Not if they want to be taken seriously or be respected. In our culture the image it portrays is trashy and uneducated.
Word's carry meaning, therefore if someone is constantly saying the F word what is their message? Either they aren't expecting to be taken literally with their message, the same as they aren't expecting to be taken literally with their cussing, or they do mean what they say, and it's a twisted message. Fresh water or salt, you can have one or the other; or do you mean to say they can mean only certain of the words they emphasize, and we can ignore the others? Why make it difficult to understand?
Since when does our perception of whether it's right or wrong matter? If it's wrong according to God it's wrong and that's all that matters. Drinking alcohol isn't against the law, but can you say drinking until you get alcohol poisoning is good? War, slavery, and poverty are all terrible, but do they make cussing good in comparison? God's law is above mans law, and just because the first amendment approves of cussing doesn't mean God does.
An occasional swear word can show righteous indignation, but if someone barrages you, swearing every other word, sorry, but that comes off as very ignorant. I couldn't stand to listen to anyone who talked like that all the time, I don't care what POV he was espousing.
So Christian don't struggle with sins? I find this as a complete blank out, when people cuss they usually do so out of habit, even if your heart has changed.
Don't defend cussing. It's not hard to see what the bible is teaching. You really have to twist scripture to defend the usage of cuss words. If the world knows its bad and we don't how much more blind would that make us? Don't be the blind leading the blind, set your pride aside, and live without destructive speech.
I didn't say swearing was the only indicator of ignorance, but it is an indicator nonetheless, as demonstrated in shows such as Springer, but also in the talk you hear about town. Again, people who truly want to be respected or taken seriously do not swear flippantly and excessively. If you can't understand my point by now, then I am left to conclude you are just a combative person looking for an argument, in which I have no more time for going in circles with.
I am a little confused, you had a show where you guys said it wasn't a sin to drink alcohol, but you say it is a sin to cuss. So drinking is okay, but cussing isn't? I would put them in the same category, or actually drinking is worse for christians.
Interesting commentary on the state of movies now vs the days of code, but here is something I've noticed. While yes, there are plenty of movies being made that contain lots of graphics language and images, most of the mainstream movies coming out are largely family friendly. Compare this to the so-called family movies of the 80s and you'll find there was more inappropriate content then. A great example is Indiana Jones vs Pirates of the Caribbean. TV on the other hand has gotten much worse!
Actually it is you who have proven nothing, but at least you are honest enough to admit that if it weren't for moderation on RU-vid you would happily substitute all your words with cussing. I'm sure that will go over well in your next job interview...good luck!
Using the Lord's Name in vain is like stabbing me in the heart. That is blasphemy. Using profanity is supposed to be a sign of very intelligent people and doesn't bother me as much from unbelievers.
First of all, I did not start out this discussion as a debate...I started out by agreeing with you. This is why I call you combative...you were clearly looking for a fight, not common ground. Secondly, do you not understand the difference between excessive swearing and the occasionally swear word? If not, why haven't you been injecting a massive amount of cursing in your comments? Because you obviously want to give the impression you are intelligent. Thank you, point proven enough.
So If I politely dropped F-bombs in a soft tone and in a good mood would you say it's okay? Many people use the f word in every day life, and they aren't always expressing anger. Some people are just using it as a word filler. It's clearly not good to be constantly saying the f word as a word filler; it's a filthy way of saying "sex." If you hear it enough it's going to work its way into your subconscious and possibly cause you to think about sex, porn, etc. It's certainly not edifying.
'dont misuse the name of the lord your God' a commandment. but if you friend isn't a christian, you can't put them on a christian standard because they don't consider those standards. it would be like us trying to follow the russian law. it doesn't apply to us unless we were over there. food for thought
@TheForgottenMomo God forgives all who choose to come to Him and repent:) just admit your wrongdoings to Jesus and ask to let Jesus into your heart, and you will be saved:)
Actually you demonstrated nothing of the sort. You need only to turn on Jerry Springer to see the type of people in our society that swear excessively and without reason. And of course my choice to swear or not is preference based. I never suggested it be law.
