Is It Always Better to Layer Cardboard and Mulch before Planting?

This Q&A is pulled from a collection of questions posed to me by students of my Online Permaculture Design Course (PDC). Learn more with my free four-part Masterclass series, here:

Question:
In some cases it is clearly better to place a barrier and mulch heavily, moving the mulch and cutting the barrier to plant what needs to get through it. Are there situations where planting before placing the barrier and mulch would be more appropriate?

About Geoff:
Geoff is a world-renowned permaculture consultant, designer, and teacher. He has established permaculture demonstration sites that function as education centers in all the world’s extreme climates - information on the success of these systems is networked through the Permaculture Research Institute and the www.permaculturenews.org website.
About Permaculture:
Permaculture (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permacu...) integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies - imitating the no waste, closed-loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts and at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics, and community development.

I live in a very dry climate, compacted, alkaline, clay soil. So, as an experiment to aid in germination and seedling protection, I started scattering carrot seed in areas with native grasses. They come up beautifully ! And I leave some to go to seed and I have all sorts of volunteer carrots the next year.

I find you very easy to understand... giving all the minutest details that others leave out. Very simple. Thanks

Hey Geff, that is a bit of myth about the forking due to high nitrogen saying that if you were to plant strait into manure you would get this , but most no dig market gardeners are now just using strait compost laying a layer of compost down then putting the seed down and covering again with compost. Put some names bellow to check out on youtube and just from my own experience I use this method on small scale with great success. No Dig: Charles Dowding ( Highly recommend) Richard Perkins Not no dig : Curtis stone

The question that was asked is the same question I have but it seems like the answer wasn't quite relevant? It seems like they were asking about the common permaculture practice of laying two layers of cardboard down and then covering with wood chips or a heavy multch to convert a lawn or weedy environment to one good for planting and raise the fungal comp. The question seemed to be asking about situations when planting everything and then arranging the cardboard around the planted items and then multching would be less desirable than putting cardboard down everywhere first, then cutting holes into it to plant, then multching.

I'm wondering if the carrot seed was applied in a sand mix rather than applied on top of the sand. I've learned of a technique of dispersing carrot seed more effectively and with less effort by mixing the seed and sand together then sprinkling on top of prepared soil.

@geoff hello. Can you please make a video specifying what kind of productive trees can be grown in food forests system. From big to small. Thank you

Take his online course for not only what trees, shrubs, bushes, and ground cover to use in a food forest but also why to use them. You will be very happy you did

Hi Jeff, Need your help! I live in the Caribbean and here it is hot and dry for the most part but now we're in the rainy season which brings its own challenges. One of which is a particular type of fruit worm that attacks curcubates. Do you have any organic solutions to my problem? Any help would be much appreciated as I just planted som zucchini and do not want to loose the whole crop like I lost my cucumbers. Much Thanks, Jeshue.

You need to confuse the pests with additions to the garden of scented plants colors shapes and forms all mixed. Favor the predators with bird perches, bird bathes, frog ponds and rockeries for lizards.

Companion planting things like hibiscuses 🌺 that attract beneficial insects 🦟 to the sidelines of the crops and French marigolds that deter insects between your plantings, the idea is to create a micro environment that maintains it’s self by bringing in and attracting more diverse wildlife to your area

Hard to keep it moisty it seems, any tip to avoid too much work watering?
@ginger_wby

He mentioned watering after sowing, then setting a wooden board on top for some days before they germinate. This keeps both moisture in and heavy rains out ^^ probably safe to remove the board after 7-10 days

I recently saw a video with Bill Mollisen. He gave the idea to put lenses (3inch deep 15 inch diameter) of soil on paper and a straw mulch layer. On that he sprinkles carrots and radish seeds. He than suggested to cover them with a paper board and remove it, when the seeds are germinating. Is this info obsolet nowadays? The video seems to be from the 90s.

Ive placed composting material in a pot. Layered the top with soil. Planted seeds. By fruiting stage material is broken down. Oh man the smell is awful though 🙈😭😝💩

You have to aerate compost or it will turn anaerobic which is gross smelling non-beneficial compost.
