I use a blade grinder that was not in the review from Hamilton Beach. It has 5 cup settings and 5 grind settings. The grinding is in a stainless steel chamber topped with a clear plastic top. The beauty of this unit is that it runs in an auto mode and shuts off when done. The coffee is excellent whether it's ground for auto drip or even French press. And it's easy to clean. I saw really nothing like it in this report.

i use a blade grinder, and do drip brews and also use a moka pot sometimes. the biggest mistake people make with a blade grinder is standing it vertically on a table while grinding. this is incorrect and will always give you an inconsistent grind. you have to hold it with both hands and keep it moving around during grinding to get a consistent grind. with enough practice you can get a uniform grind comparable to what you get with a burr grinder.

I think you'd really have to be a coffee connoisseur, (snob), to appreciate the difference in grinds between a burr grinder and a blade grinder. I have both; bought into the rhetoric, and have no preference for one over the other. Often, I'll grab a Mc'D's coffee which I find very satisfying!! Thanks for the objective review, Hannah!
@billsmith3528
@billsmith3528 5 лет назад
OMG no you didn't just say Mc'D's coffee is good... they by far have the worst coffee in the universe (Folgers is close though) A person that drinks a lot of coffee is not a snob, an addict perhaps but not a snob. Caffeine addiction really is a joke but the addiction can and does make the enjoyment of a good cup of brew very much worth it. McD's coffee is hot water with a brown tinge. They use less than half the grounds of what a normal coffee would be. Their coffee is all pre packaged, pre ground, way way too old to be considered fresh. It is picked in a state that is far from its end point then shipped possible hundreds of miles to a factory where it is ground bagged then sent to McD's main hub then split up into orders and shipped to another McD's hub usually on a state or city level, transferred and then sent to the store. All of which means the beans were days old before grind then weeks old after grind wheere they can sit in the storage room at the store for another couple of weeks before being used. So no McDonald's does not have good coffee in any way.... It is just usually so hot you taste nothing but there is very very very little aroma to McDonald's coffee

In the video you talked about ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O7LAzSKgeoQ.html ) , at 5:45 you can see the coffee they made. It looks like crap. Probably drip. Obviously you don't notice the difference with cheap brew-methods. They are all so fucking dumb. You need good grind for tough brew-methods where pressure and crema are things to look out for. I love their videos, but those people have absolutely no clue about coffee. None whatsoever.

When blade grinders are compared to entry level burr grinders for methods where grind size isn’t as detrimental blade grinders tend to do somewhat better. But with espresso, where blade grinders are compared with higher end grinders then it’s obvious burr grinders evidently win
@FreakNasty52
@FreakNasty52 5 лет назад
Ugh, finally! I admit burr grinders are better, but they're not THAT much better. Another point people ignore is that coffee has oils which can go rancid. Blade grinders are much easier to clean than taking apart a burr grinder... and most people don't even clean their grinders. So yeah, a burr grinder is a bit better but definitely not if you're not regularly cleaning the thing.

After only used three grinders: Both kinds give a good grinding. Coffee brews the same way. The only difference I found is the more consistent appearance of the particles ground with manual burr grinders compared to the electric grinder with blade. The electric blade grinder more easily allowed for finer grinding particles' size.
@damonrondeau8416
@damonrondeau8416 5 лет назад
This seems like a well-researched piece but unfortunately you guys missed the obvious here. The coffee people who have always sung the praises of burr grinders are *espresso people*. In the making of espresso, the composition of the "puck" -- the tamped disc of coffee grounds through which water is passed under pressure -- is *everything*. Very slight differences in puck density result in big differences in coffee output. You actually do need pretty fine control over the grounds to produce a consistently good shot of espresso. A blade grinder truly sucks in the making of espresso -- it will never ever give you the control you want if you're an espresso geek. It's not physically capable of doing it. But you know what? Not every coffee fan is an espresso nerd. If, like me, in your pre-espresso life you became a fan of the simplicity and excellence of coffee produced in a french press, you know that method requires coarsely-ground coffee -- too fine a grind and you will plug the steel filter. For french press, a ten dollar blade grinder is perfectly functional and is , in fact, superior to most burr grinders (because a burr machine would require adjustment, sometimes a fussy operation with burr grinders.) These are the REAL reasons for preferring one grinder to another. Unfortunately, we've seen way too much journalism that never skims past the surface of these things. The result is what we've seen: after many years of repeating the same mantra of "burr grinder burr grinder burr grinder" the actual reason for preferring one to the other is separated from reality and it's grown to a myth, the origin of which people have no idea. It's got nothing to do with the generalized claim of particle size being critical to extraction. It's not mysterious at all, it's simple. But you've got to know the truth. Unfortunately, we didn't get the truth here. I'm sure the people from George Howell could have set you straight if you'd let them, but you only used them here to signify quickly that they like the coffee you made for them. Talking about grinder preference without mentioning preparation method at all? Just more coffee mythologizing, I'm sorry to say.
@billsmith3528
@billsmith3528 5 лет назад
well they did not mention prep or clean up which I feel is very important. Also I just want to mention that I went the espresso route for awhile and I still used a blade grinder and my espressos tasted exactly like the ones in the coffee shop (this is before I stopped going to the coffee shop. When I want to grind (with blades) to an espresso grind I just do it twice to ensure a even grind that will be fine enough for espresso.

That's like saying all water is just water. The people masking their coffee with a lot of cream and sugar have probably never had an actual cup of coffee. For some reason in America we value quantity over quality and having a barrel sized bucket of beans from Costco is more appealing then a locally roasted bean from a nearby store. Come on people drink 1 cup a day and savor the actual flavor of coffee.

A good burr grinder is necessary for espresso. I was using the 60 dollar Cuisinart grinder with my Krups 15 bar espresso machine for a long time and drank watery espresso with nice crema for many years. I know this for a fact, because my rancho silvia espresso machine needed service every ten or so years and I used my old espresso machine that is total crap when that happens, I've got it stored away nice and dry and clearn, but keep it just for when my good machine needs serving. even with my rancho rockey grinder, I made some really amazingly not bad coffee from a total peace of it machine. better then I did with my old grinder that I thought was good grinder but clearly no up to the task when it comes to a real espresso machine's needs to turn that coffee to gunpowder.

The choice of coffee is much more important than the grinder. We used to use blade grinders back in the 1970's as a big step above pre-ground. We got our first burr grinder in the early 1980's (a simple Phillips purchased on spec at a clearance sale). We were converted. We have had a variety over the years We had a number of Brauns since they ground fine enough for espresso. We now have a Cuisinart for day-to-day and a built in grinder on our Breville Barista espresso machine. We still have a blade grinder around mostly used for spices.

Try a higher end burr grinder (like a Mahlkonig EK43, or most Ditting's) and run this same test. The lower end grinders, especially the conical style burr grinders (like the Encore you showed here) aren't in the same league as the better ones. Futhermore, coffee quality, days past roast, roast level, water chemistry, etc... all make a big difference. High end/quality is surprisingly hard. Your test can't be too conclusive. First, I'm sure your people who use the blade to grind the coffee *know* how to grind coffee for consistency. There's method to achieve this that requires the person who grinds to be attentive. Pulse, stop, shake, examine ground... So your result of the ground using the blade is probably not much different than the grounds going through the burr. But at home, for common folks, it's probably too much work to grind the coffee with the blade grinder that would achieve accuracy and consistency. So the burr grinder should be the way to go.

Some grocery stores have grinders so you can grind their house coffee. What do you think they are blade or burr or either?And is it ok to use those?
@FlesHBoX
@FlesHBoX 5 лет назад
they are going to be burr almost 100%. Burr grinders are significantly more durable, and easier to clean (assuming the grocery store ever bothers). But you can listen to it while it's grinding and tell. blade grinders tend to turn a lot faster and you can hear them demolishing the beans, while a burr grinder turns more slowly and massages the beans to pieces (lol). As for whether it's safe, I would ask someone who works there how often it is cleaned. If you can't find someone who can tell you outright the last time it was cleaned, and they him and haw over it, it's probably not the best idea. As for flavor, since there will usually be a dozen or more different coffees run through it, some of which are going to have flavor oils on them, what you get out the other end is going to be a mixed bag (almost literally). If you prefer flavored coffee, it will probably taste fine, but if you prefer black, or only cream/sugar, you will probably notice some of the other beans coming through.

I just wanted to tell you that weather you use a burr grinder or bladed when you put a whole bean in you will get a grounded bean out. Now on a bladed grinder some of that bean may be stuck to the side but that can be scraped out and used. Good luck with doing that with a burr grinder. There will be some of the bean being stuck to the blades or the inner housing. Let me see you get that out.

When I saw that other video about grinders I got a bit irritated when it made me realize that it was pretty much done product specific perhaps the sponsored product being chosen. Choosing a grinder is not really all that hard. It all comes down to cleanliness. Depending on what kind of blade grinder you get I suppose, it is possible to be able to detach the blade and storage cup for an easily clean up. Rinse with hot water wipe with a paper towel and you are done. From what I can tell that can not be done with a burr grinder. You may be getting coffee grounds that are a year old. Not to mention the fact that if gluten in introduced into it you may never get it out. For me that is a big problem. As was said in both videos you can not in any way whatsoever tell the difference in the taste between the two. So what is comes down to is basically laziness on your part. You do not want to have to stay present and hold the grinder to that it stays engaged. You would rather "set it and forget it" as the old saying goes. But OMG you can not wait a total of about 30 seconds to grind your coffee? The other video said you had to grind then shake then grind and shake to ensure that you get a good blend. That is a total lie. Granted I am sure there are some bladed grinders that this would be necessary but not all just as I am sure there are some burr grinders are a waste of money. I use a MR. Coffee bladed grinder and it works beautifully. The blades are low, the spin is plenty fast, it has several presets for length of blade spin so there is no guess work on if you did it long enough which was another lie told by I think both of the videos. Now some people like me appreciate a finely ground coffee such as a espresso ground. You stated that if the ground is too small that it will be bitter. That was another lie. If you coffee is ever bitter no matter what grind you have either something is wrong with your coffee or your brewing method. I use a Black and Decker single cup (actually about 2.5 cups) coffee maker and I have not ever had a bitter coffee because of my coffee being too finely ground. I drink up to 6 cups of coffee a day. Just because you may have had sponsored content from the two coffee houses does not make the people used in the testing experts in any way. They could have been just college kids needing a job or perhaps a business person that does not know the first thing about coffee. This is done on you tube a lot. Sometimes the independent judging panel or person I have personally seen is just a friend of the host and does not actually know the first thing about what it is they are testing. The information they get is from what was told to them, which is usually incorrect and product specific. All that being said I will have to say that you and the other video were so incorrect about a burr grinder being better. Because it is not. First off burr grinders are more expensive and as stated by you the do the EXACT same job as a bladed grinder except the burr grinders are harder or in fact not even able to be cleaned. Which is the second reason burr grinders are not better. It actually should have been the main focus of your judging, but it was not even mentioned. Like I said who is going to want year old coffee grounds in their coffee.
@billsmith3528
@billsmith3528 5 лет назад
I did not answer the question in the topic. Are the more expensive burr grinders worth it? The answer would simply be in no way shape or form would it ever be worth it. That is unless you are lazy and don't mind old coffee grounds in your coffee, then in that case it is still not worth it because it costs more and does the exact same thing.

any grinder that cannot be disassembled to be cleaned is a bad design. Personally, I've never seen a bur grinder that couldn't be disassembled to clean, and did it to three grinders twice a day when i was working a local roaster. In fact, it is more likely that you will find a blade grinder that you can't remove the blade from than you will ever find a bur grinder that you can't remove the grinding assembly for washing.

@@FlesHBoX You kind of missed what I said.. For a bladed grinder, i use Mr. Coffee, a simple twist of the blade cup maybe 1/4 of an inch turn and a 10 second rinse and a 10 second wipe and you are done. I mean you can see that there are no grinds in the cup, if you are not sure then just wipe it again and look at the paper towel to see if there is any debris. Having do disassemble(sic) the blade assembly clean and reassemble just does not sound like a 20 second job or 26 if you wipe twice. The grinder is clean after every single use. I just do not see that happening with a burr.

Before I watch : If by cheap, you mean a blade grinder, the answer is : No -- But. Blade grinders are less convenient, harder to use, and harder to get consistent results. And notice I say consistent results, NOT a consistent grind. A consistent grind may be preferable, but it's not that important. Having a setting and mechanism that assures you get the same grind each time you grind your coffee is important.

If by less convenient you mean that you need to at least rinse and dry them out after each use then the answer to that is yes, but. Who in their right mind would want to use something without cleaning it? From the few burr grinders that I have seen actually cleaning them would be a difficult chore, at least a good deal more difficult than twisting the blade cup off of the machine rinsing it and wiping it with a paper towel a process that would take maybe a minute on a bad day. I can do mine in about 25 seconds. As far as harder to use I will agree you must pour the beans in and press down on the lid and even hold it for 10-15 seconds maybe give it a quick shake and then let it go for another few seconds. Total time maybe 35 second, and that is for a 6-8 cup grind. Grinding for 1 or 2 cups may take a total of about 15 seconds. both processes would take less than one calorie of energy from you. So when you say bladed is harder to use I will agree but the difference is like the difference between using roller blades and riding a bike on level ground. As far as consistent results and a consistent grind well it just so happens that the grind of the bean is the result so it is exactly the same thing. I have been using bladed grinders for at least a few years. I have never once had a grind that was inconstant with the last or even my first. Blade grinders do have settings for things like how long they spin after you press and hold the top or button. It will operate on how fine a grind you want and how many beans are being added. There is nothing at all hard about that. Lets say I am grinding for a 6 cup brew and I want my grind to be an espresso grind. 2 selections and that is all put the beans in press the button wait for it to stop. Not really a difficult task.
@Blackmark52
@Blackmark52 5 лет назад
@@billsmith3528 "rinse and dry them out after each use" No. I didn't mean that at all. In fact, I didn't rinse and clean my blade grinder unless I was changing from coffee to a spice or vice versa. But I don't recommend using any grinder for anything other than coffee if that is what you're using it for. And then a dry paper towel every now and then is adequate cleaning. There is nothing dirty about the coffee you are drinking. Likewise I don't clean my burr grinder beyond wiping out the hoppers with a dry paper towel and maybe brushing off any residual coffee powder from the burrs every three or four loads. And the burrs in the grinder I have are very simple the brush off, the top burr literally just lifts off after the hopper is twisted off. What I meant by inconvenient is that blade grinders don't hold your coffee beans : you have to get your beans out, take the top off your grinder, put in the beans, grind the beans manually pulsing and shaking the grinder, turn the grinder upside down to knock the grounds into the cap. And total time 35 seconds? -- maybe, but not really if you count everything. I too have years of experience using both blade grinders and burr and I think you are overstating the consistency of using a blade grinder both in the grind and between subsequent uses. A burr grinder grinds the same amount, at the same grind, in less time, and at the push of a button.

well unless you keep your processor clean and have enough room for it to remain on you counter all the time without ever getting in the way and you have a family of 20 that you need to grind a large enough amount beans on a daily basis then perhaps a food processor would be a good choice if and only if the blades in the processor are low enough. Other wise it would be impractical to have to assemble your machine grind your beans than have to disassemble and clean it every day, day in and day out. If you happen to be be like me you may need to do this 5-6 times a day.

man, this is so amateurish. There is no simple answer to that question because it completely depends on the brew-method. The more soffisticated the coffee machine, the better the grind has to be. That's why the grinder should always cost around 50% of the coffee machine, with lower percentages the more expensive the coffee maker gets. But it's a fucking huge science and absolutely not possible to answer that question properly in 3 minutes.
