Is it Cruel to Use Bees as Digital Sensors?

Not What You Think

Honey bees are more than just pollen collectors! With a sense of smell on par with dogs, honey bees can be trained to detect any smell, like explosives. But how these bees are trained to detect explosives, what their advantage is over sniffer dogs, and how other animals have been trained to perform unbelievable tasks for the armed forces, is #NotWhatYouThink #NWYT #long

Honey bee's go after large fields of flowers and Trees. They tend to avoid small patches of wild flowers and will completely avoid certain flower colors. A much bigger problem is humans using pesticides. One of the biggest killers of our local pollinators(Bee's, Butterflies, and Flies) is mosquito control. Towns will spray massive areas with pesticides. Then there are local companies that will spray private lawns. My neighborhood was a dead zone of pollinators. I tried to grow a garden my first year here and nothing that wasn't self pollinating would produce vegetables or fruit. I now have 2 beehives, 1 bubble bee Vase, and a ton of solitary bee houses. I have to cover everything with wet sheets when the town sprays.

I actually remember learning about the pidgeon bomb in late elementary. I'm not sure if I learned it in class or online but I was pretty amazed. This whole thing brings me to half life where everything is run off of some kind of part-organism machine or powered by organisms. Truth be told, organisms are probably the cheapest way to produce any kind of high sensitivity sensor, and sometimes high strength materials. For example, bees dogs and rats detect chemicals, while toucan beaks have incredible properties for body armor and spider silk could theoretically be used for a space elevator. It's probably a huge part of the future to use highly complex organic bases to create the greatest technology of tomorrow. After all, human technology is fast and efficient, but millions of years of evolution, and the slow microscopic building of an organism is going to produce quality on a scale that manmade technology may never reach.
