How do you know if the pain in your chest is due to heartburn or a more serious cause like a heart attack? In this episode, Dr. Afrin N. Kamal, a gastroenterologist with Stanford Medicine joins us to explain the signs and symptoms that patients should be aware of for both conditions, the differences between them and what symptoms may cause confusion for patients when the discomfort presents itself in their chest. Dr. Kamal provides expert insight on acid reflux and explains the long-term effects of acid reflux on the esophagus. She also offers tips for patients who experience frequent heartburn, such as when it's time to put down the antacids and go see the doctor.

If 30% of emergency visits for chest pain is heartburn, how many turns out to be heart attack? I hope it's not 70% 😐

Jesus is the only Healer. The only true peace and hope. Doctors always say go to ER with anything chest related.. then your stuck with 1000s in bills for constant visits and most the time they did next to nothing. Specialists who might figure it out are months away for an appointment, months after that for procedures and then tell you if you have anything serious happen before then go to ER.. the one thing not mentioned is that when you feel chest pains linked to digestive issues, it can trigger anxiety, spike your heart rate, and cause you to sweat.. all which makes you think your faint and that it’s your heart. GERD meds also can have side effects that give you other issues.. lose weight, take pre and probiotics. Watch what you eat carefully, do cardio. Trust in God.

(45F)... Every 2-4 months I get this HORRIFIC pain. It sometimes starts as a pain in the middle of my chest, that shoots straight through to my back... sometimes it's reversed... Starts in the middle of my back and to my chest. In either case it comes on fast and strong and I'm now screaming... I can't stand, sit, lay, walk, kneel, bend over... Nothing helps. I feel like I'm being tortured or gonna die. I always say it's worse than labour. I also have a hard time breathing (hurts), feel faint from all the pain and discomfort, sweat, etc. I do eat about 4 Gaviscon tablets and I'm lucky if it all subsides within 20 mins or so. No one takes me seriously. ER doc says it's heartburn and to just use a wedge pillow and keep Gaviscon Extra strength on me at all times. (I read that US & 🇨🇦 or UK Gaviscon is quite different, I'm CND). I'm so confused as I keep hearing that back pain, difficulty breathing, sweats etc are all heart attack related. I never know what to do... Fight it out at home or call an ambulance?

Thank you for sharing your story. As a reminder, this channel cannot and does not give medical advice, all the information here in videos and comments are for education purposes only, and not a substitute for medical advice. Please consult a licensed healthcare provider to rule out any underlying heart/cardiovascular/or other health conditions since many of the symptoms are similar as the doctor describes in the video. Some things to consider: Have you consulted a cardiologist to rule out any underlying heart-related issues? Have you consulted with a gastroenterologist to determine the cause of your symptoms/get a second opinion and diagnosis? Do your episodes seem to happen whenever you eat/drink certain foods or lie down too soon after eating? Maybe keep a journal to determine any links. Once your healthcare provider(s) rule out any heart or other health issues, you may want to consult a dietitian to help you identify foods that may trigger/or are contributing to your episodes. From Mayo Clinic: "What's the best thing to do if you have chest pain and you're not sure what's causing it? If you have persistent chest pain and you aren't sure it's heartburn, call 911 or emergency medical help. Call your health care provider if you had an episode of unexplained chest pain that went away within a few hours and you did not seek medical attention. Both heartburn and a developing heart attack can cause symptoms that subside after a while. The pain doesn't have to last a long time to be a warning sign". @@GastroGirl thank you. I have gone to ER regarding it, as mentioned. They did check my heart, etc... but have not gone to a specialist. The ER Dr. is who told me it was gas. It's so hard to imagine that amount of pain is just due to gas. I keep saying I need to keep a journal.

@@lsehAre u having bad burning n the back, chest, shoulders, arms etc and it radiates? And all other classic symptoms Similar to HA? Jaw, etc? Bc its possible like all docs would tell as they r telling me.. There are all similar symptoms. I went to ER twice thinking I was having a HA all results EKG and blood work came back good I wasn't having one but the cardiology will find it. Idk why it takes time to get in knowing ur having issues c prolonging it can cause more issues so get in and see someone. I have 3 weeks to have my ultrasounds. I have symptoms every day. I get out of breath, weak, chest burning back burning arms burn, felt like something n my throat, burn pain goes to my neck and head, diarrhea, legs burn, belching/gas passing. Been to cardiologist and he told me the symptoms r very similar and asked lots of questions, the ekg he looked at and said by the looks of it it look like u had a heart attack I look at him asked did I he said looks it, then as he got up he looked at it was walkn out, and I asked him again he said ur EKG looks good. Crazy!!! The symptoms r driving me nuts but I'm not calln 911 over these symptoms anymore they put a heart monitor where I have to press button with each chest burn/pain. but the wait is HELL... So if anyone is experience the same... Plz do respond or if a doc ty I'm trying to find things to do to get my mind off this, its hard! So, take care of ur self get looked at and bless U!!
