At least that's the most common thing people say when they compare the differences, never found any official source about this.

Because ‘British’ means ‘English, Welsh, Scottish AND Irish’, so there really is no such thing as a _British accent._ Example: The accent that made James Bond famous? That is a suave *English* accent!
