Is It Now Impossible To Climb The Property Ladder? | Loose Women

It’s only the second week of 2024 and already Janet has got some big opinions to share on her first show back! She’s recently found herself in a debate with Kirstie Allsopp, who in a recent interview claimed she thought banning building detached houses would benefit the environment, and restore a sense of community spirit. And it looks like Kirstie may be onto something (sorry Janet…) as so many people are now struggling to get on the property ladder with a lack of affordable housing crippling first time buyers. So, could rethinking how we build houses help solve this problem? Or is the property ladder essentially unclimbable? Linda says she’d have to die before her kids can get on the property ladder. And Janet’s convinced unused offices and department stores could be the key to solving Britain’s housing crisis.

I never understood the reasons for having a downpayment on a home. It doesn't show responsibility. A lot of people who put money down on a home have lost it for one reason or another. If you can show that you can afford a mortgage and you've been paying rent one time, you should be allowed to get a mortgage with zero down.

0% deposit options are available in some countries abroad (US, Anguilla, etc.) but they usually come with extortionate interest rates which often puts borrowers in financial difficulty and often results in them losing the home. In the UK, the financial regulator requires all lenders to ensure responding lending which includes but not limited to making sure the borrowers can meet the ongoing mortgage payments (capital & interest) and is able to pay for the full cost by the end of the loan whilst also meeting all other financial commitments (utilities, Council tax, food, travel, childcare costs, petrol, insurance(s), any other borrowing, etc.) This includes having money aside to maintain the home. With interest rates the way they are and general cost of living, even if 0% mortgages was offered in the UK, most people won’t meet the requirement for “responsible lending”. All it takes it for an unexpected job loss and your home is at risk. Let’s take the stigma out of renting. Let’s face it, until you’ve paid your mortgage outright, it’s not your home, it’s a home you share with your bank/building society and they reserve the right to ask you for their share of the capital at the end of the term (2-5 years) - which would be an issue if you can’t remortgage with anyone else. What is more surprising is that it is NORMAL for people to desire to have a start their new home with 300-500K debt.
@aurora6920
@aurora6920 4 месяца назад
Because if you rent forever how can you be able to afford the high monthly payments when you become old? Most people don't get their houses taken away and that risk happens with renting too
@e.o.537
@e.o.537 4 месяца назад
@@aurora6920 I agree. You shouldn’t rent aim to forever, if you can try and buy - in a financially responsible way. Make sure you have a robust pension because if you can’t pay off your mortgage before retirement, consider if you pension will be enough to allow you to keep up with repayment - especially if you are starting with zero savings. 50% of UK adults have £0 in their savings. 33% have less than £2K in their savings. It’s hard to save when everything is expensive but savings, investment, pension contribution is a better security when you are older than a house. If you need looking after, the government will insist you sell your house and are completely bleed dry before they help you

@@e.o.537 0% down payments are very rare in America if it ever happens. My point is even if somebody can prove that they have a good job and can afford all their expenses doesn't mean something can happen in a month or a year and now they can't afford the mortgage. Having a down payment isn't security for anything, it just changes the home price.

its not just this one comment though, she has made quite a few ridiculous ones over recent years. She also made a comment about how people could get on the property ladder if they gave up things like Netflix and saved harder etc which is ridiculous. There are far more factors than just saving, preventing people from getting on the property market. Her privilege shows when she makes such comments. Ironic really that somebody who inherited the bulk of their wealth, telling others they need to save harder haha She comes across incredibly tone deaf.

I understand both sides of the argument. Kirsty could have been a little more sensitive. However, the standard of new build houses today are so poor, they lose value very quickly, come with a raft of issues and are very expensive.

I hate living in a semi detached house as the sound proofing is awful! It's like a night club, my baby can't sleep, I can't hear my TV or rest if I'm unwell. They will play their music for 8 hours non stop. I had this issue with two previous houses too!! I tried to get the council to help but said it wasn't during nighttime etc why can't we have detached houses for a bit of peace!! It makes you not want live anymore when the music is constant 😣 detached houses shouldn't just be for the rich and I bet Kirsty has a detached house. Plus I agree deposit and how much you need to earn to get a mortgage is too high! Shared ownership the rent is high and they are leased meaning the value goes down so you're forced to stay there.

I don't understand why buy-to-let is ok. The renter is paying someone else's mortgage. And the landlord is putting up for rent a property which they haven't fully paid for.

I like Janet because the perspective she’s taking indicates that she’s realistic about the fact people from her background can’t just rely on hard work any more in an economy which caters to the rich & a housing market dominated by career landlords. so many people her age from working class backgrounds who were able to earn their way 40/50 years ago really lose touch of the fact that the way our economy works now doesn’t allow for that as much anymore.

What no one tells you is the reason for high house prices is the currency debasement from money printing that the Central Bank does. If people actually understood this maybe we could deal with the problem.

Where I live in Brighton any spare space that could be used to build homes for those who could afford them, any spare space is being used to build student accommodation, so anyone already lives here has no chance. Before finding my place I had to find a guarantor not many young people know people who own their own home. It's ridiculous. Those that can afford it like that guy they mentioned from the bank he can afford it, so it doesn't effect him

@Aaaaaaa-qe5kd that's brilliant! I have finally just bought a house in the last 2 years, with my partner. But we needed £22k and when average rent is nearing £1k a month, we just had to not do ANYTHING for 2 years. But we are lucky as we are both not on minimum wage. It seems buying a house is reserved for either people who have a stable enough family home to live in while saving, or people who are on well above average salary

Council properties are exactly why the country has this entitlement that people deserve to have their own property. People are abusing the system and in some cases refusing houses as its not big enough for them and their family of 15 kids. You should not be relying on the government to provide handouts to look after your kids and provide a roof over your head. That is your job as a provider and as a parent when you have kids. Linda insinuating that more council housing should be made available is a perfect example of this entitlement.
@vyvienvp3413
@vyvienvp3413 3 месяца назад
Building or extending is cheaper than buying a suitable property. The country is a disgrace, no council houses have been build in 30 years. Can only suggest youngsters stay at their parent's home. (Or caravan in their driveway). Save to buy some land, even the space of a garage can accommodate a 2 bed house(small). And go from there. Saving from scratch for a deposit on an ideal house is no longer an option.

There wouldn't be a shortage if we sent people that should not be here packing. The manager from the bank needs a pay cut and a reality check, then when he's had that see if he can get on the ladder when he's only on 16,000 a year.. like a lot of people.. There are far to many people at the top with all the money eating all the pie. And i am sorry to say so are you lot on this program some of you on £ 8000 per show.. It's PURE GREED.
