Dinah Van Tulleken, wife of TV Doctor Chris, thinks she has the answer to overspending at Christmas and has decided this year not to buy presents for her husband… or her kids! With the ongoing cost of living crisis and the growing climate fears, is Dinah being a Grinch, or is she on to something? Coleen says she would never get rid of gifts, as she remembers how hard her parents worked to get her family things - and Christine believes if more presents come, you have to give back to charity.

My kids get one gift they like on Eid day. We celebrate two Eid in one year so both times get them a gift one gift and take them out to have fun. Is never over the top and they really appreciate it

If you raise children to never expect presents regardless of the occasion, creating memories is more important.

We used to get 1 present that was fine. To get nothing is disappointing for kids.

Nah if ur able too afford it, spoil ur kids. As long as they’re appreciative and don’t bloat about it I see no problem

The greatest gift that anyone can give, is their love "in action." That said, I think that if one can afford it, give a child at least one special gift, if your family celebrates Christmas. To the woman who is not giving her children anything...how would you feel not opening a little gift on Christmas Day? I suggest not purchasing so much throughout the year for your kids, and give them a gift on Christmas.

honestly these kind of parents dont deserve kids, they wont know the damage they do to them in the future depending on their age.

@@BJ-rd2ih Fr. When I was a kid my mom would threaten to not do holiday stuff because she was dealing with her own demons, and making us miserable was one of the ways she dealt with it, and it messed us up because there was no reason for this cruelty. I could understand if we didn’t have money for it, but we had enough to spare. I could even understand if my mom wasn’t up to doing anything, but this was plain cruelty.

I could never leave things until the last minute. I find December emotionally overwhelming because of trauma so I do everything before hand so I can relax as much as possible. September: Start thinking about what to get people October: Buy the presents November: Wrap everything & then it’s under the tree by December 1st

Yes same, most people I've lost it was December time so always aim by December to be mostly done apart from last bits and bobs, food and drink wise, though I don't enjoy it, I still want my son to enjoy it regardless

I agree with the woman, why are people getting themselves into debt, for a bunch of presents their kids won't use, they should get 1 or 2 presents each, but it's all about who's parent got more for their kids, it's to make themselves look good, plus kids are very selfish these days, if it's not expensive they don't want to know

My parents really went all out at Christmas, I’m the youngest of 9, and we had really fab food and gifts, I had a portable telly one year, ❤ The whole 12 days of Christmas was celebrated. Not extravagant, and always lots of singing dancing and family fun❤🎄❤️

Kids are pampered with material objects nowadays. Stuff stuff stuff everywhere. All this writing lists of “get me this for Christmas” means that children expect to get what they want all the time now. What’s more, Christmas has become all about presents, not about what the actual story is behind it. I reckon if you asked most primary school children nowadays what the meaning or story of Christmas is, they would say “presents” and not “the birth of Jesus Christ”, “love”, “family”. Religious or not, if we’re going to instil these holidays in children … Easter, Halloween, Christmas etc … they ought to know why that holiday exists in the first place. Then again, each to their own.

How about you have a nice family experience, not just on Christmas day but maybe go to a panto or Iceskating or Winterwonderland or buy family board games. Sightseeing or just spend most of the money on nice food/drinks. I find people tend to buy people what they want rather than need round Christmas as well anyway... All materialist stuff.

@@alethiacampbell1365 if you're not buying your CHILDREN presents for Christmas, but you are sitting there in a sparkly jacket and full on make up, it's 💯 cruel. Unless you're a Jehovah and don't celebrate. In which case take the make up and sparkly jacket off.

@@S_J_banana lol. Parents don't know they are born these days. I DO NOT feel sorry for parent that can't afford presents for their children should have projected for them, if you can't afford them, don't have them. My daughters 18 and never went without anything. I would go without, I don see parents going without I see children. This is actually nationwide abuse.

Some British people have asset sustainability problems, there’s no point in keeping a car if the children are going to miss out on presents. It’s a downgrade, we maybe all have been through it, I know I have. Lack of knowledge is going to determine whether these children get presents, bless ‘em.

How about you teach morals on Christmas and not other occasions. Besides Christmas is all about the birth of Jesus Christ anyway and a time to gather together as family/friends.
