I've got a B650 board because it came with a microcenter deal along with a 7700x and 32gb ddr5. With the bundled discount the board and memory were essentially free. I'm not lacking any features, it does everything I need it to. The x series boards were extremely overpriced when I bought. I did a side-by-side spec comparison and it didn't make sense to go for the x series board because I didn't need any of the additional features. I've been building systems for more that 25 years and I have more experience that 99.9% of people out there. The B650 has its place at the right price. I rolled the savings into an ssd, cooler and case.

@@45enoWent for the B650 Aorus Elite AX to go with a 4070 and 7700.Has a Gen 5 M.2 and 2 Gen 4 m.2.Why would you need more. The reason I mention this is because not all X670 boards are created equal.Rather get a good B than a corner cutting X.Been building pc's since the early 90's and believe in proper research before buying and parts that work together in a balanced way.

@@45eno Americans have it good with PC parts and prices. In South Africa it is not so good. For example I paid nearly $750 for a 4070 if you compare currencies. X670 Aorus Elite ax is nearly $400.The B version is $314.So the B version costs more that the X version here than in America.

The reason someone might ask about the Strix B650e-f is because it's the mobo included in Micro Center's 7900x bundle. If that's the case, the price comparison changes a lot.

You only need an X board if you are going to use its features, a B board is just fine otherwise. I had an X570 before moving to a B650E-F, nothing I ever did required an X570 so a B550 would have been just fine, but of course I wanted "high end". Do your homework and base your purchase on what you need (and want to spend) not what is labeled "high end".

If you are a gamer primarily, nothing but B650E for am5 should be bought. Difference between B and X its just that X has more of the same shit, same goes for BE and XE. Only difference can be found in terms of features on/between extreme and non extreme boards. Just buy the BE, its balanced and a happy medium.

The example you gave was dumb. You literally said you put in a better SSD which is probably why it was more responsive. And you also changed a few other things from what i heard. Way to many variables to say changing the motherboard was the reason why it performed better.

Yeah, but is the point of having the extra bells and whistles if you are never going to use them? I never use wi-fi or bluetooth. Barely one, two max USB ports on the back or the front. I have never used the front audio ports. Never populated the lower the PCI-E slots on any motherboard in the last 15 years or so. I been using B series motherboards for over 10 years. They been enough for my needs. For me spending an extra £400 for a higher end motherboard and CPU would be a waste of money. I rather put that money towards a better GPU if I am being honest. I could have spent an extra £300 ish on a Z90 motherboard and an i7 13700k but it would be a massive waste of money and usage. Especially for what I use a PC for which is just RU-vid and streaming services. Not a big gamer. Probably spent too much money as it is on a i5 13500 and 6750XT anyway.

- To me, AMD B650 and Intel B760 is really great IF you not into OC. If you are a professional Video Editor or Heavy Multitasking person then High-End Board is really worth it, it's has a lot features and stuff that a Professional really needs. But if you just a gamer and casual user just get the B-Boards then you will be perfectly fine. - I have 14700K, B760M TUF, 64GB of Ram, RTX 4090. I just the undervolt 4090 and 14700K they both run really cools and fine. the board got all the features that I want as a gamer, little bit of Video Editing and 3D Render.

Eh, I think you are putting too much priority on PCIE lanes. The vast majority of builders are running 1 MAYBE 2 M.2s, a GPU, mouse and KB and MAYBE just maybe a DAC or a steering wheel setup part time. Frankly, been building PCs early 90s. I was part of the OC craze early on turning my pentium pro 150 into a 200 (with less cache) to the cellery 300s I had stable for over a year and a half at 450mhz to my X99 system creeping at 5ghz (good silicon on my chip but not quite good enough to keep 5ghz stable) and today....... all thats gone less you are going real exotic with your cooling. Once Intel joined AMD in OCing from the fab to claim performance gains the need for that X/z board kinda went out the window. Find a sub 200 dollar mobo that suits your needs and put the savings into your GPU. There really is no reason to go over $200 (as of the date of this post in the US) on you motherboard. You simply do not get the performance benefit you used too going with the expensive boards. You even said it yourself, that live mixer power delivery is rivaling that of boards 100 more expensive.

The B vs X chipset argument here doesn't account for finding a B650-E board for a good price. In my case, I got an Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming Wifi board for $225. Compared to the X670 Aorus shown, yes it has one less m.2 slot and 2 less USB 3.2 gen 1 ports, but the Strix has 2 USB C ports, including one 20gbps, which is more useful to me as I have a couple of NVME enclosures and need to transfer files between PCs often. Also, I feel like one big caveat about the X670 boards is only 4x SATA ports, and only the X670-E has the 8x SATA, and those boards are usually always in another price bracket. The B series chipset does have its place. Not too long ago, I saw a deal for the AsRock B650 Pro RS ATX board for $130, which is a steal at that price.

when i built my new PC at the time in 2018 during the insanely high price for RAM it was a 8600k and i got the motherboard that was decently filled with features for only £80. full ATX gigabyte motherboard. CPU fan + 3 system fans, 1 dedicated to an AIO pump controller. im currently waiting for prices to fall for the 7800x3d and AM5 boards and the amount of entry level b650 boards that are in the £130+ category is insane to me. and some of the micro boards still only go for about 95ish on sale but still hover around £111. i dont get why AM5 boards are still so expensive even after all this time

Because money , most top tier motherboards are way overpriced , that is the same thing with any high end product , the more it costs , the more premium it is , the bigger the price even if it doesn't justify it price to performance , I know saying ,, money ,, sounds like a lame answer but that really is the case .

i had a Asrock and returned it. 1 big Con that was a deal breaker w Asrock boards - if you populate every single slot it turns off the pcie slot or degrades its performance. It is mentioned on the website of Asrock, which most don't read in detail. However, if you are planning to not populate every slot ; your good.

Some b boards just have overall better vrm, oc capabilities and features than a lot of X boards, even at 250-300 I just made a build today/yesterday and the expensive b boards are literally undistinguishable from X boards to the same price, it literally depends on the deal, they trade blows, b350/b450 were really budget boards, they had only 2/3 of them that had good oc potential and so on, b550 is where it changed where pretty much half of them here good on some oc and had plenty of features and b650 you literally have a quarter or so of budget boards and the rest even the one shown at 150, they have very strong vrm and features, now you literally have b650e boards, crazy ram oc at 8000mhz, crazy features and cooling capabilities, it's just a name in some situations, don't buy because of the "brand"
@coolumar335

agree with you very much here about B550 boards being much higher in quality, even in the lower end. Tech's anecdote about the B350 vs X570 most relates to the 3XX series of AM4 being really janky. I had an A320 board that wouldn't even take a BIOS update and almost bricked itself, as well as a B350 that wouldn't overclock a Ryzen 2600 to 4.1 Ghz when I could do that no problem on a B450m TUF board. I have a secondary rig running a Ryzen 5600 in an AsRock Phantom Gaming 4 B550 board, and even though it's a lower end B550 board, the 5600 manages to boost to 4.45 Ghz all core at all times, even without PBO.

The difference is that X670 or X670E has a second PROM21 chip that acts a twelve lane PCIe switch. Quality is a completely separate matter. There are junk X670E boards that just use the extra chip to connect useless accessories like on-board WiFi, sound, or crippled m.2 slots. Don't assume anything just from the chipset

For gaming I have a ASUS ROG Strix B650E-F ($240) paired with a 7800x3D and it feels like a good choice. Here are 4 reasons why: 1. PCI-E 5 GPU port for future upgrades. 2. Quick Release GPU Button. Big quality of life feature if you have every battled a huge honking GPU. 3. Nice audio. 4. At $240 when on sale it feels like a quality now that the BIOS is humming along. I also have: Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX ($179 open box) paired with a 7600 (Non X). Very happy with this build. ASUS TUF X570 paired with a 5900x MSI x470 Pro Carbon paired with a 3700x ASRock AB350 Pro4 paired with a 2700x I will agree the x boards seem snappier and have more premium features. I actually just went shopping for last-gen boards for a repair of my existing build. Is it just me or is the ASRock X570S PG Riptide basically the only fanless X570 at a reasonable price? Background story: My comp was randomly crashing even when not doing any strenuous workloads. I thought it might be either a GPU issue (driver reinstall helped temporarily) or Windows (almost always crashes on my profile and not my wife's). Then one day it doesn't want to boot, not even at the motherboard pins, and I know the board is receiving power since the glow LED is still on (it's an ASUS X570-P). So, I can't imagine what else it would be. It eventually booted after repeated attempts (a dozen or so), but I consider that enough of an alarm bell that living with it is not a good idea.

I bought the Strix Z690 for AU $700 (US $450) for my 13700K when 13th gen first launched. I know I definitely overpaid but my only other options here at the time were similar priced competitor's boards, high-end ones that go well over 1K or the friggin' Prime boards which were the cheapest but still cost over $500. Also, at that time the 13700K was $600 and the 13900K was $1100 hence why I decided to forego the i9 which was my initial choice. Yeah we Aussies get royally screwed when it comes to tech prices, but you probably already know that.

I have the asrock steel legends x670e mobo and a sapphire nitro 7900xtx. Great motherboard, BUT after successfully breaking the GPU release clip, I confidently say, that a B series mobo with a quick release and other ease of maintenance features would make me consider buying one for a new system. That GPU is so large, you are left with 1.5-2 mm on the edge of the clip to push it down. Seriously, such quality of life features are so overlooked.

The "mid range (actually higher range, gaming CPU), buy a good feature set & reviewed B series board" (if you are buying parts and not combo deals) is, indeed, the way to go. The problem is always the time component. It is this philosophy, and issue, that has led me to buying mostly B series for friends, family, and my own builds ever since the Ryzen CPU era began. (Beginning with Ryzen 5 1600 builds.) The key is to buy parts over a period of about 2 weeks minimum, longer if possible. Shop from multiple vendors, and watch for the good discounts / combo deals on good quality hardware. And, when dealing with builds for friends and family, ask them the important question first. "How much are you going to spend on this build? (And, know if this includes a new Windows license, peripherals, are they keeping their old case, etc.)" With that price in mind, price out an entire system on day one with day one sales. Then... expect to get another 5-10% of money back via only buying what is on sale, and good, today. Wait and buy the rest (as you watch sales and change components to similar performance levels). Now, obviously, you can't necessarily do this during heavily hyped (or not) sale periods of Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and "January" (post holidays), but price these known holidays in as well. Someone wants a new computer for Christmas? ... Encourage them to be able to wait until they actually receive it at the end of January after you've shopped for 2 months. Overall, be a good customer and price compare, research the hardware, and make good buying choices.

I disagree, on Ryzen all B650 boards have good power delivery, and give all OC features for AMD, they are not "cheap boards" at all, you can't really compare B350 to a B650, so much progress since They're $50 to $100 cheaper for only some fewer lanes, and most people don't need x4 M2 drives, so don't care I'd get a B650 Strix over a Prime X670 any day, better power delivery, better build and better looks, and certainly more connectivity...

Did AMD warranty the CPU for you? I've had to warranty 2 AM4 CPUs in the past 2 years, first time in my life I've ever had to use a CPU warranty. One was Zen 2, the other was Zen 3.

I can recommend you B650E Steel Legend if you are going am5. It has Wi-Fi and im 99% sure it will allow the strongest/last supported am5 cpu to be relased to perform at 100%.
