You wanted to know if it's possible to get pregnant 2 weeks after you've had a baby. And there's a couple of things to consider. First of all is that after you've had a baby, your body needs to return to a normal fertile state. And this is not likely to happen very quickly if you're breastfeeding a baby, because the hormones that support lactation suppress ovulation, and ovulation is necessary in order for pregnancy to occur. So studies have actually shown that if you are exclusively breastfeeding a baby, the chance of you becoming pregnant in the first couple of months following delivery is only about 1% to 2%. It rarely happens, but it is possible.
Another piece of the puzzle is that it's best to wait and resume intercourse until 6 to 8 weeks after delivery. This is about the time your doctor will see you in the office, check out everything, make sure your tissues have healed, the stitches have healed (if you had stitches at delivery), and it also allows time for your cervix to close. It doesn't close up immediately after delivery. It takes time. And if you resume intercourse before it's closed completely, it does increase the chance of infection. If you decide to resume sooner than you've seen your doctor, it's best to use some type of protection, so at very least, a condom. But oftentimes, your OB provider will have a talk with you, before you have your baby, about types of contraception that you can use after you've delivered. So this is, again, another reason why it's best to resume intercourse after you've talked with your doctor and implemented some type of reliable birth control.
So to directly newer your question and summarize everything, it is remotely possible to be pregnant if you resume intercourse a couple of weeks after having a baby, but your body would have had to return to a fertile state, you would have had to have ovulated and timed intercourse just right with ovulation. So the chance of that happening is rare, but it is remotely possible. So if you suspect pregnancy, I recommend taking a home pregnancy test 2 weeks after the time you think you might have possibly conceived, and call your doctor if you have any questions about the results. Good luck with everything, and if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at / intermountainmoms , and recommend us to your friends and family too.
