The Harecastle Tunnel on the Trent & Mersey Canal was the longest tunnel in the world when it was built! It has earned the nickname Scarecastle Tunnel with narrow boaters over the years, but how scary is it really? Join us onboard Narrowboat One Day More for the full Harecastle Tunnel experience and decide for yourself! This was the first canal tunnel on our journey south to the Crick Boat Show with Paul and Anthony on Narrowboat Morning Star‪@NarrowboatLifeUnlocked‬

Went through the tunnel last October. Nothing to worry about as it is well lit by your headlight and internal lights. We were more concerned going though Braunstone as we had to navigate pass other boats. At least Harecastle, you are all going in the same Direction. Very surprised you never had your life jackets on, especially after a poor soul died a few years ago, when he went overboard
@onedaymoreaboard
@onedaymoreaboard 6 месяцев назад
We said the same about Harecastle versus Braunston. Give us one way Harecastle any day, even though it’s very low in that one stretch. We always meet a boat in Braunston tunnel, and of course it’s always at the kink! None of us were advised to wear our life jackets by the CRT volunteers on duty, but we should consider that given the story about the person overboard. That’s sad, we hadn’t heard that 😞. Thanks for watching 😊

My imagination would have been in overdrive! The lowness of the roof which must have felt like you were underground with only one way to go; the dripping water would bring a fear that there was a fault and the roof was going to collapse; the narrowness making you feel there was nowhere to go and no escape; the accoustics would just add to the spookiness! I would have been a nervous wreck if I had stayed above deck 😱! Thank you for doing the hard part for me - actually being there!! On a lighter note, it looks like you are cruising in a tin of Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup 😉😅😅. Take care xx
@onedaymoreaboard
@onedaymoreaboard 6 месяцев назад
Hi Jill! It really does look like Heinz Tomato Soup doesn’t it! We used to bring cans of it back to America when we lived there, as it was far superior to Campbell’s! It definitely wasn’t the most relaxing trip through the tunnel and as you saw, that drip of water freaked me out a little with all that talk of ghosts and skeletons 😂. Thanks for watching 😊

Well done. Now you will need to do the Standedge Tunnel - it is a bit of organizing but a much different feel especially with the trains whizzing passed you in the tunnel next to you and if you are near a cut through, you can see them and feel the wind rush. Would love to do that tunnel again as well as the Leeds to Liverpool.
@onedaymoreaboard
@onedaymoreaboard 6 месяцев назад
We had planned to go up to the Leeds and Liverpool back in the summer of 2022 but due to lots of closures and low water, we changed our minds at the last minute and headed west to the Llangollen Canal instead. Really not sure if I’m ready for the Standedge, but I’m sure Pete would be raring to go! He’s up for anything and I’m the more cautious one! 😳

I’ve commented on another vlog about the Harecastle Tunnel and our journey through before. We came through from the other end and the CRT asked us to slow down (strange as my Husband never went fast anyway!) We were 5th out of 5 and were looking forward to it. Right where the height drops down to its lowest, the boat just went sideways and we couldn’t get it back on track. Obviously our pram cover was down and the cratch cover undone at the top with the sides tucked in (as advised by the CRT on the day). It ripped our pram cover, scraped the metal frame of it and took both front top corners of the boat. This was due to the roof of the tunnel coming down so low, the sides curved much closer to our roof and caught the boat. We feel if we’d been left to go at the speed we were originally going, the momentum would have kept us going forward in a straight line. Whatever the reason, now I’m on my own, will never go through there again! On talking to other people, quite a few have damaged their boats going through but until we said something, had kept quiet.
@onedaymoreaboard
@onedaymoreaboard 6 месяцев назад
Oh no that’s not a good experience at all Wendy 😞. I know exactly what you mean about the boat going sideways, as the same thing happened to us going through Chirk Tunnel on the Llangollen, going against the flow, and we just crabbed our way through scraping along. Thankfully that tunnel has a towpath and our son Alex was with us and jumped off to pull the centreline to sort of get us back on track in a straight line. I can only imagine what it was like to be caught like that and not being able to correct it in any way. Tunnels are not my favourite thing at all, I’ve only just got the confidence to go through bridges with me at the tiller. I keep saying I need to build my confidence this year as I’ve slipped into the role of lock operator and have been quite happy sticking with that! 😊

😮 No, no and just no. I would have to be sedated. There are parts that would be OK (maybe) but when it gets really low then it's a no way. Also couldn't be that far from an entrance. I'm 'blessed' with both claustrophobia (confined spaces) and cleithrophobia (fear of being trapped). 😳 I wouldn't be a very good narrowboater because I'd have to avoid the long tunnels altogether. Still a very neat trip... ❤
@onedaymoreaboard
@onedaymoreaboard 6 месяцев назад
Hi Dorothy! I’m with you there, with the really low sections. I think it was easier as I was so focused on the filming that I sort of forgot about how low and tight to was, a little like when we went over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and I forgot how high it was! Thankfully there are some very long stretches of canal without these long tunnels so it’s not an everyday occurrence! Hope you are well 😊

@@onedaymoreaboard I was the same with caves which I used to be able to do. Low ceilings and tight spaces are bad but when it's open and big I can forget that I am underground and could be trapped there. It's all mental gymnastics but the fear is real. 😵‍💫 Doing good. Hope you are as well. ❤

I didn't find it scary per sée.... It was the lessening of the height that got me. I swear I was 7ft 9in when I went in but looking at the "fuel guess-the-gauge" bamboo stick, I'm only a miserable 3ft 6in now!! Could hardly see where I was going by the end. Thank God for them there doors opening. I found Anthony's light very comforting in a strange way. Thank you for the experience. Down here in South Devon, I might find it a hard walk to get all the way there but... you never know... my 1959 Premium Bond might come up one day and I can buy a kayak of my own!! Many thanks. Hamish was OK with being inside during the journey through the tunnel, but Poppy wanted to be at her usual tunnel place between her Dad’s feet! It’s the only time she doesn’t want to sit up and look out! Thanks for watching 😊

Scarecastle tunnel is not at all scary to me. You make it under the measure device, you should be fine. It's really beautiful at the entrance and even more so at where you exited. I wish we had canals in the US, it is so unique to Brittan and you are lucky to have them. Here's to the Canal Trust and the volunteers!

The CRT volunteers are such wonderful people and do a great job helping us stay safe, and just being there for an extra helping hand. I kept telling myself that we fit under the height/width measure just fine, but when you see that lower section ahead you still question it! You’re right, it’s such a beautiful area made even more stunning by the vivid orange water! 😊

I love your planter boxes on top of your boat. Thanks for talking about the water color. I thought it looked like tomato soup. How often do you have to haul your boat out to clean the bottom half? Great video!
@onedaymoreaboard
@onedaymoreaboard 6 месяцев назад
You are so welcome! It really was like tomato soup wasn’t it! Far more vivid than we were expecting. Typically you take your boat out for blacking, which is replacing the bitumen coating on the bottom half of the hull every 2 years or so 😊

The “Scare”castle tunnel would scare me far less than a towering aqueduct. I get queasy on the second step of a step ladder. 🤣🙄

I have to say I enjoyed the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct far more than the Harecastle Tunnel, once I focused on the skyline and not looking down 😂

It was quite claustrophobic when it got lower I have to admit. But the relief of knowing that you wouldn’t be meeting a boat coming the other way made it a far better experience than a 2 way tunnel such as Braunston! 😊

Well yeah I have done this tunnel many years aog when travelling in the uk, I wasn't scared either and didn't see the skeleton.....lol.... I did jump when your camera went funny when the water dropped... Caroline you did well telling the history of it well done.

Thanks so much Lyn! It’s quite fascinating doing the research for these areas that we travel through. We will never cease to be amazed at how well the 200+ years old network has stood up over the years, and the stories it could tell. That water dripping totally freaked me out as you could tell! I think j it was because of all the talk of ghosts and skeletons, as I’ve been through drippy tunnels before with it a problem! Hope you are keeping well 😊

That was Pete at the beginning of course! I was laughing editing this. I’m surprised there wasn’t more ‘echoing banter’ between the two boats though. Especially Pete trying to scare the boys! I think we were all concentrating too much! 😂

Thanks for joining us from the other side of the world! Isn’t RU-vid such a wonderful thing for taking us places near and far! I have only made it to Perth, which was only a short 4 hour flight from Singapore when we lived there! We really would love to explore more though! One day perhaps. We had such a wonderful time traveling with Paul and Anthony, and even though these videos are way behind, it’s been lovely editing them and reliving all the memories. Hope you enjoy them! 😊

Flying from Perth to Brisbane, is about 6 1/2 hours, but you’re going from one side of the country to the other

Before we lived in Singapore, I really had no appreciation for how big Australia was, until someone said that Singapore is actually the nearest major city to Perth in flight hours!

Oh I thought exactly the same when I was doing my research on the history of the area. Three hours legging it through the tunnel I am sure was not comfortable at all. I think we have become a nation of wimps though with all the luxuries we have now, compared to the hardships of the canal dwellers and workers when the network was first built. Thanks for watching 😊
