Is it SAFE to Have Camera Gear Out in The UK???

As a photographer, I never thought I'd ever have to question whether it was safe to have camera out in the UK.
The Photo Trip: bit.ly/BvSIceS
My Camera Gear: bit.ly/BvSGear
I'm in Scarborough, UK on today's photography vlog. And, while it's super photogenic, I was thrown for a curve when a local man went out of his way to warn me that it probably wasn't safe to have my camera gear out in the part of town I was filming.
So, is it safe to have camera gear out in the UK? Honestly, I do. Of course, nearly every city you go in the world can have areas to avoid. And, you need to be smart. But, I've never had an issue out as a photography in the UK. I've never felt unsafe taking pictures in England, and while I have felt less safe in certain parts of Belfast, and Glasgow, I never actually worried.
But, today on the vlog, before heading out for some sunrise photography, I do explore the idea after being approached with a caution from a local in Scarborough.

Still laughing, Scarborough is not rough or a risk, the guy who spoke to you was totally wrong.

I spent many years as a police dispatcher, very often covering Scarborough District. It was one of the busiest places in North Yorkshire, busy in terms of theft and violence, mostly driven by the ongoing drug and poverty issues. In all fairness, if it wasn’t for this experience it’d potentially be hard to spot when taking a visit to the town. I guess people will have their own experiences, though, you could live there for years without incident, or visit once and get robbed.
@Cagey7531

Even if you're from there this is complete nonsense, ANYWHERE can be rough in certain areas. There's bums and hobos and junkies in EVERY town. You just have to know the area and where to avoid.

buster colin We do. I left after the cuts. Our dispatch team got reduced from 25 per shift to just 8. Officer numbers went from around 15-20 per shift to 2-4. That’s why 999’s often go unanswered. Government don’t want you to know this, of course, but there you go.

It's a bit difficult trying to be incognito carrying a vlogging camera, camera bag and tripod, but as long as you are aware of who else is on the street you can usually avoid any unwanted attention. Sometime I use a shoulder bag that doesn't look like a camera bag so as not to advertise my equipment.

Nice vlog, love your B roll stuff and the light looked awesome. Im from that part of the world and would say that you have to visit Whitby / robin hoods bay! it will blow your mind! Also, a lot of towns on the east coast do have some areas that are very deprived and appear to be dangerous but are ok really. I think what you probably had, was a nice local who was scared a tourist might get mugged and they wouldn't want Scarborough to be 'that place' in the news. As, like most seaside towns on the east coast, they are very dependent on the tourist trade. Hope you enjoyed it, As a Yorkshire man, I am biased but its a beautiful part of the world! scott

That fact you have locals approaching you to give you some safety advice show there's a lot of good there. I was given a photography night tour voucher for Christmas. I initially planned on doing it in central London but I quickly came to my senses when I realized I have to Lug all my camera gear on the tube and then back home when it would be late and at which point I'd be alone. Having lived in Ireland and the UK I've found in many towns and cities there are parts you don't go alone at night or with any valuables but you have to go out of your way to find them. I should point out that a lot of these places rely on tourism so it will be in their best interest that you remain safe.

I lived there for a few years over 12 years ago. More chance getting mugged by the seagulls. Usually dance halls and bars throw out time when the fights begin. Great photos and videos around the place - I lived on the front just around the corner from the castle. I like your commentary, but hate that up-speak all you guys seem to have these days.

Alun Lambert walking up the cliffs in Scarborough gets you puffin! Agree though, I live in Northumberland in South Tynedale near Haltwhistle. I’m also a student at the New York Institute of Photography doing an online course in Professional Photography. My tutor has told me ‘no more dramatic landscapes’ 😁 it’s too easy, I just stick the Fujifilm out the window, set it to continuous shooting and press the shutter, then select one of the many dramatic scenery shots. He’s got me on portraits and ‘street’ photography (snapping the edgy street life of Hexham and Cordridge😂)

Certain parts of Scarborough are rough looking but I’ve been going years and never had any trouble even if my belongings are on show. I can understand you’d be weary not being a local or in familiar territory though. Avoid anywhere during ‘happy hour’ on the coast or in the evenings during our 6 weeks summer holiday where loads of people are on holiday and drinking heavily.

Dude, glad you brought this up, I got the fear in Spain last year after meeting a square looking south american at 5am in the middle of nowhere who frankly looked menacing. Along came some of his freinds shortly after and I had nowhere to go other than back past them on the deck boards. I decided to collect some chunky driftwood and fronted them, and got no hassle, but I did have serious fear! Puffins are best in North Berwick UK on the boat trips around three islands.

I live in Yorkshire which Scarborough is a part of. I've taken all kinds of camera gear to Scarborough and the Yorkshire coastal towns and never been bothered by anyone. Same in Central London, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool. Whilst there are dodgy parts of every town, if you do your own research you'll know the areas to be more careful in. I don't carry an obviously photog bag in dodgy areas. I stay aware of my surroundings. Love the shots taken here mate. There are odd little cobbled streets here and there in Scarborough that are great to photograph. If you're still in the North of the UK you should do the Northern Quarter in Manchester. Street art and old Victorian buildings mix with more modern architecture. Some great independent coffee shops too 👍

Same as anywhere in the world, there are parts of the UK that you could run into trouble. This is a massive generalisation and not true in all cases but our coastal towns, while beautiful, are based around tourism in the past and now that has declined, there is little work and a lot of run down areas. Very timely question. In the last month I have heard of 1) a guy getting his camera bag snatched from beside him in a cafe 2) a guy who had his bag looped through his belt so survived an attempted snatch and 3) a model who had her purse snatched during an outdoor shoot. These were in London. I'd certainly be wary of leaving gear lying around, and more and more I'd be concerned about personal violence.

I travel through many, not nice areas in the UK from time to time. The reality is if you walk with tripods sticking out of your back you could be considered to have expensive gear in the bag. Also, the way one dresses makes a difference/ Most places I have found are safe but get more hassle from the door guardians of tall office buildings demanding you cant photograph there such as in Canary Wharf in London. Again a quick snap and they dont notice,,,, start mounting all the gear on a tripod and they suddenly decend...same in rough areas. All towns in the UK and elsewhere have them but you use your common sense and intuition and if you feel insecure then walk on. Unfortunately, they are bad ones in all places but I have to be honest and say the vast majority of folk are fine. Just keep looking and if in doubt bring a friend or leave.

Top tip if you ever go back: Scarborough Castle closes early. Head there for golden hour and climb over the wall. You'll have the place to yourself.

Head to North Landing just down the road from Bempton, iv'e seen Puffins there. Puffins aside, Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby and Staithes are well worth a visit. Oh and Saltwick Bay to shoot the Wreck of the Admiral von Trump with Black Nab behind. :)

Scarborough is my hometown and not once have I ever felt unsafe photographing the town. I hope that you revisit the North Yorkshire coast and do it without feeling nervous for your kit. If you ever revisit and need an escort just give me a shout :)

Thanks for the reassurance. I felt fine. I was just thrown for a bit of a loop. I'm guessing just a really over-protective local.

@@BrendanvanSon No. I think that person meant what they said. With that being said, the chances are very slim for you in particular to be robbed after him telling you that. But I would still be cautious wherever you're at!
