In this video, I explore a practical application of microscopy to determine whether a white speck in homemade fruit jam is mold, bacteria, or something else. After examining the sample under various magnifications and using phase contrast microscopy, I discovered the true nature of the contaminant. Spoiler: it's not what you'd expect! Watch as I explain how you can use microscopy to inspect food quality and avoid contamination in your kitchen. Subscribe for more insights into the microscopic world and practical tips on food safety.

I get butter dots in my jam all the time.

Right on DAD!! You definitely get major points for the coolest dad award. I know I would have cherished that kind of interaction with my dad growing up. It's always brings a smile to my face whenever I see families working together to ingauge their imagination to learn new things.

That was so funny. Butter! 😂 Could you please do a video on the surface of a leaf of green romaine lettuce? I noticed that I have a hard time pulling romaine lettuce out of a plastic baggy, because the lettuce cling tightly against the plastic bag and won’t release. It’s like lettuce Velcro!

I'll be sure to bring a microscope with me the next time I go out to eat.

I have just learnt that some liverwort plants are regular hosts to rotifers. Mosses, liverworts and hornworts generally, may be good mocroscopy subjects anyway. Follow up?

It takes some sturdy fungi to grow in such a high sugar, hypertonic environment. And it will have to be a psychrophile too.

Thanks. My guess would be carbondioxide bubbles. Cheers mate.

We used to buy jars like that many, many years ago but they updated the design to a funnel thing that you twist, squeeze and the jam comes out and you twist it again and it closes off. Nothing can get inside of the jam, such a wonderful solution! I've always been obsessed with the cleanliness of jars and I've caused many pointless argues over family using the same spoon or butter knife in multiple jars, it for some reason *really* irks me.

Hello my friend... Greetings from Knoxville Tennessee. I am a super novice very interested in this new world of exploration. I want to thank you for the tips on what type of microscope to start with. I took your advice and purchased a VEVOR trinocular microscope for $200 (US ). I am very interested in testing food for bacteria as well as bacteria in drinking water samples. Could you be so kind to show live samples of bacteria in spoiled food or food going bad and maybe bacteria in drinking water as well? Thank you Victor.... Alvedezein ! (I know I didn't spell it right)

Where can we learn more about the structures that we see under the microscope if we're not trained in this? Like, obviously you looked at it and saw some kind of lipids, but I have no idea how I'd figure that out.

I normally just watch a lot of microscopy videos and look at a lot of microscopic images and then just take screenshots and label them in a google docs. I haven’t really found any book on microscopic identification yet

The shown method is nonesense, to identify bacteria you must first make an isolation and enrichment on agar-plate petridish, every biology beginner in first semester knows this. Of course you will find bacteria, becaus they are everywhere in natural marmelade. The question is if they are pathogenic and the concentration. So you must work quantitativ. And after enrichment and isolation begin with your gram staining etc etc. Using phase contrast in first glance is not nessesary, darkfield could help...

The point wasn't to identify the bacteria, the point was to understand what that white stuff is, which he managed to do, even before looking under the microscope he assumed that it isn't a colony just by looking at it with his naked eye, and he also made a follow up video explaining why you can't check if food is safe to eat this way, take things more lightly, it's a fun interesting video, that's all.

@@E_y_a_l yes i agree, he tells himself Professor and sells microscopy stuff in his shop. But it seems to be more a comedy-chanal and not a serious microscope chanal. It would be nice if you answer more exact fo my opinion on identifying objects, phase contrast, food analysis etc .
