Iron Golem farms have been in Minecraft for a very long time. But is it time to finally get rid of them and replace them with something better?

The problem with mining is that it doesn't change: when you finish a project you want to move on and do something else but when you finish mining you know that you will have to do it again

They need to make mining more interesting if the iron farm is going away. A cave update is appropriate. The cave update can include a miner villager variant that you can employ.

Erik Patrone | Minecraft used to be about survival. Mining was a chore, but it was motivated by need. Nowadays, Minecraft is much more about exploration and construction. You no longer gather resources out of necessity, you do it as a side-effect of exploring and discovering. The Overworld, oceans, the End, and now even the Nether have all grown to reflect this... but the underground remains untouched. They need to make the underground as interesting to explore as the Overworld. Until we actively *want* to go down there without motivation, mining will continue to feel like a chore.

Zhander Drake it honestly would feel more gratifying to build a fleet of mining carts to get iron than building an AFK farm. But as it stands minecarts and TNT cause a lot of lag. TNT is much less since 1.15 but they're still both very unoptimized features. Most servers I've been on don't allow any minecarts to be used. Another problem with the minecart automation method is chunk loading. Sure a minecart could go off and place rails/TNT but when you send a cart off into an unloaded chunk or recall a cart from an unloaded chunk you're gonna have issues. So you really couldn't build a control hub, you'd have to walk along with the mining carts to get the effect you want.

Yup. There is no proper way of playing the game and people shouldn't fight that. If you think you should only get iron from mining, you can just not build a farm. If I want to build a contraption that has a thousand hoppers, and comparators, I should be able to build afk iron, gold, and bartering farms to get absurd levels of materials without spending insane amounts of time doing the brain dead activity of mining where I'm paying more attention to a RU-vid video than the game I'm supposedly playing

Hot take: due to its widespread use in crafting recipes that we tend to make a lot of (hoppers, anvils, rails), iron is no longer a "valuable treasure" like gold or diamonds are. I consider iron to be almost comparable to stone in terms of its versatility and the need to gather large quantities of it for most projects. Since wood, stone, and iron are the most common building and crafting materials, there should be ways to farm all of them efficiently so that late-game players don't have to waste their time mining. Wood can be farmed with trees, and stone can be farmed with a stone generator, so iron should be farmable in some way. I think iron golem farms are acceptable, as they are still relatively difficult to initially set up (you must obtain villagers and a zombie, and get them all into the right positions in order for the farm to work). Iron farms do NOT make mining irrelevant in the late game, as there are so many other more valuable resources that can only be found [in significant quantities] by mining: Diamonds, copper, Redstone, amethyst, deepslate, Axolotls, and the upcoming Ancient Cities. If anything, mining is more pleasant when my inventory doesn't constantly get crowded with iron.
@user-ox4bv3it4i
@user-ox4bv3it4i 2 года назад
Honestly yea, iron is just basic especially for set up for the long game. Need clearing land for a project that can gain wealth? Use iron a cheap and reliable resource. After that and huddled in does mining become bigger in need of diamonds

I completely agree. Iron farms aren't stopping people from mining because you still need to mine. Whether it's because you just started or need diffrent ores. If they are really so concerned about them then just make them harder to build so that it's even more of a late game thing.
@NebulaAviation1

and at this point, copper, redstone, and amethyst are all farmable, so mining is really only for things like diamonds and the other stones like deepslate, diorite, granite, etc.

Iron farms are incredibly easy to set up early game. Every survival server I join has the exact same iron farm being used day 1. These are average players using these farms day 1 on a brand new survival server. That's how widespread it is, and how remarkably simple it is to build one of these farms. It is beyond broken. In the grand scheme of it all, I agree that it doesn't affect mining, but it completely ruins progression for early-game players.

I mean, if the Meta were to change to TNT mining we'd still be relying on an exploit, since there's no non-exploitative way to farm Gunpowder or Sand that you would need in high amounts to mine efficiently this way. Rails/Minecarts aren't a good sollution either since they also consume a large quantity of Iron, the rate of return on investment would likely be low, inefficient and likely poorly received. I think a better way would be to simply introduce a new mechanic like Dowsing, that trivializes Iron and Gold Mining (maybe redstone too idk). So that mining for those frequently used materials is less time consuming.
@-hello6177

Obviously a tnt update would completely nerf gumpowder necessity or add some other way to get it, in this very update there's people using beds to mine with explosion rather than tnt, after mojang tried to add better mining options to tnt (every item falls instead of some being destroyed)

@SSJ22Terris
@SSJ22Terris 4 года назад
@@tomshrosbree1189 Farm, not gather on mass. Killing creepers is unreliable as there's no guaranteed method of spawning them. You have to mix them in with other mobs, and your just not going to get very much very quickly just cave running. So the only way to get Gunpowder in plentiful amounts enough to realistically get a full scale TNT mine going is by making a Mob Grinder, which is exploitative. And while you can dig out a desert, everybody hates it for how incredibly tedious it is. It's fine if you only need a relatively small amount, but on the thousands you'd need for large scale mining, it's just obnoxiously slow. It's a lot less a problem than Gunpowder, but people are gonna be really grouchy when they're digging out their deserts, ruining the topography, in place of just making an iron farm like before.

@@andermium yes, but that's very much an exploit. Which was my main point. If the devs don't want Iron farms to be so prevalent because it goes so far away from the intended purpose and effect, than shifting the means of getting Iron to a different exploitative farm isn't really addressing the fundamental issue being targeted, while also disrupting the player experience. It'd be a net loss, for both sides.
@tomshrosbree1189
@tomshrosbree1189 4 года назад
SSJ22Terris I’ve got no mob grinder in my survival world and I still have stacks of gunpowder, in my opinion it would be a lot more fun to camp outside for a few nights and go looking for creepers, it will take some time but it would be worth it for the sense of achievement you would get (btw I think the tnt idea is bad anyway and it would be better to just do some good old mining and would be more effective) also saying that gathering sand is tedious is a but stupid because if you think like that then mining for diamonds is tedious and so is getting wood, the whole idea of survival is that you need to put the effort in to do what u wanna do so even if something is boring or tedious you need to do it if u want to do the fun stuff, if u cant be bothered to harvest resources then you should just play creative.

Just because redstone engineers built circuits out of various inverters and signal strength carriers through brute force trial and error doesn't mean they want to stop the average joe from learning to do the same, or that there isn't more functionality they would enjoy. What Minecraft REALLY needs is a redstone contraption mob. If something IN the game were building things, players could learn along with it. Imagine some adorable-ish monster that is lured by redstone noises or signal carriers that likes to move redstone blocks around in different configurations and make them all power together. Something that, let's say, scares other mobs, so average users would have a reason to want them around, but can be locked out of actual contraption areas by some mechanic, so engineers don't mind them either. Average people don't play with redstone because it's confusing. To become less confused, they have to engage with it. Minecraft needs something to encourage redstone play, much more than it needs to eliminate any farms created with it.

With all respect, I personally disagree with this idea As a technical player and also a builder, the removal of farms would make me completely lose interest in playing the game on survival. It would officially kill the game for me Minecraft is one of the few games where bugs, glitches and exploit actually improve the game, taking those away would make the game boring Not to mention that a game in wich I would spend 80% of time mining, in ENDGAME... Like... Dude... I just enjoy the feeling of having the game automatically collect resources for me, while I focus on building awesome projects or building more farms I should also mention how building farms and then finally using em once they're done, is one of the most satisfying and best part of the game, at least for a technical player like me Me and my friend spent 2 days to build CowKing's Raid Farm that produces over 80k emeralds per hour, it was very fun and satisfying One thing that minecraft misses in its intended gameplay is actual automation And as long as it doesn't have intended automation, the community will never stop finding exploits that can in some way automate the game But Mojang itself said that they didn't want Minecraft to turn into Factorio... Therefore this is a change that we will never see To me personally, saying that Iron farms should be removed to encourage players to mine for iron, is the same logic of those who'd like elytra to be removed, to encourage players using minecarts or horses The game needs a sense of progress, it should require you to mine at start, but once I reach endgame, I demand some kind of automation And while more traditional players may like your idea more... As a progressive player, I personally dislike it a lot... I wouldn't play a game with infinite possibilities, but doesn't allow automation...

I'm a technical player too along with playing competitively, but I only build most of my stuff in creative mode. I have never completed a survival world. I create a new survival world and already forget about it during the early game. I would like to enter the late game stage in a survival world, but I'm never able to do that. That's why all the automatic farms, Redstone contraptions, and any building projects are in a creative world for me. The only farms I built in survival mode are simple non-automating wheat farms. How do I keep playing a survival world and complete any project, since most of my projects(Not only in Minecraft) are incomplete is anyone knows how? Also, I ironically started liking and playing Minecraft since I was 12 or since Minecraft 1.12.2 update because my mother and everyone else who knew me really wanted me to enjoy Minecraft when I was 6 or something. TL;DR of the comments section. 1. Minecraft is a sandbox game and should let people decide how they want to play rather than a playstyle being forced on them. 2. Mojang has underlying issues with gathering resources because there is essentially no progression to how you gather resources (Ex. --Need wood?-- Early game: chop down forest with a stone axe Late game: chop down forest, but faster with a diamond axe --Need ores?-- Early game: strip mine or hope you find a cave to explore Late game: strip mine or hope you find a cave to explore, but faster because now you have a diamond pickaxe) Taking out automatic farms like iron golem farms limits the feeling of progression and forces players to slave underground for hours on end to gather resources for ambitious projects.

not since 1.14. With the change to village mechanics, its relatively easy to water some villagers into a hole on some beds and water a zombie into a different hole at night (soul sand + kelp make water elevators super easy). It may take time to build the dirt guide, but it doesnt even take iron to make an iron farm and they arent very difficult to build in single or 3 people size. look at some of the "nano iron farm" designs for a less efficient but super easy build that uses a little redstone if you are concerned about space.

@Karl Håkansson cauldrons arent necessary. Also, building in the air has never really been an issue since pillaring with dirt and crouch moving removes all the problems with that. not sure where the "ready to beat the end dragon" comes from as you only need to make a very fast trip to the nether for soul sand and a little quartz to make it easier/faster. not too hard to coax a zombie into a water elevator with soulsand, especially with a shield. only requires signs, water, soulsand, and a fair bit of dirt to build the temporary structure name tags arent required since you can just throw some of that extra dirt and if the zombie picks it up, it wont despawn (mobs holding items/blocks from the world dont despawn) tips: build a water elevator higher than the iron farm (to about even with the iron golem platform. build the villager+mob structure (being sure to put sides on the zombie area for now) use signs and water to create a forced path that the villagers/zombie will go through. using boats, get the villagers into a position where they can only go into the water elevator, then push once 3 villagers are in the villager area, remove the temp structure that leads them there. do the same with the zombie once the zombie is in place, fill the hole and remove the rest of the temp structure and finish the fencing for the golem platform. remove the blocks on the sides of the zombie so the villagers can see them shields are your friend for pushing zombies/villagers as needed.

Idea to change iron golem farms: make java iron golem spawning similar or the same as bedrock iron golem spawning. This works because in bedrock edition, you can get great rates from iron farms, but unlike java, high efficiency iron farms also come with high cost, resources, and time, but you still can have small-scale iron farms with rates which are much lower, but not extremely low, like the early days where java iron farms gave maybe a stack per hour. I feel like this would bring a balance into the game, because to get good rates, you would need to put in a lot of effort, but you still could farm iron in smaller scales more easily and more early in the game.

This basically. Iron farms keep servers from completely shitting the bed. Quite literally iron is a needed resource, and mining a ton of iron would kill the gameplay. No one wants to constantly have to mine 8000 chunks just to get enough iron, in a multilayer server with everyone mining in a very limited server. It just doesn’t work. Server operators just bypass this entirely by making iron golem spawners, which would negate the entire prospect of getting rid of iron farms. People will simply break the game and allow for cartable spawners to allow for golems to spawn. So, making a iron golem farm, just more intense and more iron and more cheating literally to allow for players to have more iron. Iron is needed. You can’t build up a entire community on iron and then remove it. Pretty much everything he said would be negated. Servers disallow TNT or block destruction by TNT, disallows certain farms or has a limited area. Basically; iron farms allow for non block destruction or mining to allow for resources to be gathered without destroying the world. If you limit golem farms, you’ll force literally hundreds of players in a server to then rush to destroy the over world to get iron. It would be detrimental. Some evils are required. Iron golem farms are *required* to sustain the current game play without really destroying the Meta

@@caltonianorange9823 yes, but people play for different reasons, which is what could be said about a lot of the people's comments on here. If you like building rollercoasters in survival and having that difficulty with the fact that you need to spend 99.9999% of your time going and getting more and more iron instead of figuring out a way to get it while still having a difficult part to it that you can look at and be like, yeah, I made that and it's awesome, it gives me this ore that I need that cut down this project by a few years. People once they get older don't have as much time to sit down and play a game sadly (not that school doesn't take a lot of your time, it sure as fuck does coming from a college student) but if you don't want to be just mining forever in the game, staying underground and giving you an eye ache every hour while not even getting back what you need for the effort you put into it eventually, it's pointless to play it. Most players who want to make cool contraptions don't want to just grind out everything like that uselessly, at that point, why have farms that give you wheat? Or why bother raising cattle if you can just do what the game designed and go out and hunt it? It's not right and not a part of the game! Pssshhht. It's essentially the same argument as many in this comment section is making and I'm just sitting here like, okay, then play an earlier version, or find someone who made a mod to take out iron golems altogether! It's not like you can't just play the sandbox game the way YOU want to play it as an individual and let the other players play it how they want to, no, impossible! Not everyone approaches the game, or enjoys the different and many faceted sides of it the same way that you do. I know personally that I can only go down into a mine or cave system for about an hour before getting sick and tired of it and never wanting to do it again, I play the game to have fun, and I don't find that facet of the game fun. Which is also why the minecraft designers got backlash at the removal of spam clicking the sword and then later not being able to block with it, it was a part of the game that made it easier, and thus more enjoyable for a good deal of it's players, and I don't see removing iron golem farms as a priority in the whole scheme of things, in that case, get rid of villagers all together, as well as chests in different places full of loot, it's pointless in having a part of the game where you can get resources that you should grind for and struggle for, since it's whole player base MUST be masochistic for even PLAYING a game where the main object is staring at two blocks for hours and hours or wasting resources and time finding resources in other ways. Thank you for reading my opinion on the matter. We don't have to agree, it's a sandbox game, so what the game means for you could be completely different from what it means to me, and that's great! It's what's made it one of the best selling games ever! Have a great day!

It’s still a design issue, it might be antithetical to the game’s intended design to allow you to have an low effort alternative of getting iron that allows you to skip mining at iron level entirely, especially with the relatively recent changes to mining that encourage you to mine on multiple Y levels, explore caves and look out for the large iron veins. It upsets the balance of the game intended, even when played single player.

You know where I rarely ever see iron golem farms in? Modded versions of the game. They could make the iron golem farm but there are WAY more ways to get iron in those mods than there is need to waste on making an iron golem farm. One of the biggest things is being able to multiply your iron by using certain ways to mine it, or smelt it etc. Something that has been in modded for a long time are sieves, which can slowly get you smaller amounts of lots of stuff from sifting sand, gravel, and dirt. There is SO much dirt in the game that players just don't use and most of the time let fall onto the ground and despawn. Sand and to a lesser extent gravel are used a lot more for other stuff. But being able to sift dirt and get little bits of iron, gold, etc from it. That is just one thing which by itself wouldn't added much. Then there is stuff like cooking your iron in a different type of furnace to get slightly more resources. Then there is also the fact a lot of mods increase the size of ores you can get in the world so it's not mostly stone and dirt like vanilla minecraft is. Your idea of having like a huge vein of iron ore in spots is similar. Something else could be like some mods where every now and then you get a meteor or asteroid landing on the surface every now and then. Or have something that you could craft or use to kinda summon a meteor or asteroid to hit a nearby location. Another great place to be able to do this would be the end dimension since it kinda seems like space in a way. Each one that lands will have a lot of resources in high quantities like iron, a little gold, etc. You could maybe make it into a farm in that way and would only be good for late game players. Seriously every time I watch any minecraft youtubers play a modded minecraft I never see them making an iron farm because of the many ways to get ores/resources. Though a lot of the ways are kinda cheaty/duplicating ways. But others are more realistic and at this point should be in the vanilla minecraft finally. And finally, there are some minecraft players that never use the iron farms and are fine with how it is. The ones I see who use it a lot are ones that make HUGE farms that need like huge amounts of hoppers, rails etc for making other big farms. Those minecraft players like the old ZipKrowd crew.

Modpacks do a good job at this because they did what Mojang didn't do. Balanced the iron economy. As Sarc so rightly said, the crafting side of the game has expanded to require much more iron than it previously did, increasing the demand for iron, but the mining side of the game hasn't compensated for this increased demand by increasing the supply. We have a supply shortage. The solution I'd like to see is overhauling the whole geology of the game to be much more realistic. Caves generate where streams through soft rock such as chalk and limestone are likely, ores generate in larger clumps more spread out (think Civilization or Factorio) such that you can find a location in which you can build an actual iron mine, either by tunnelling in the area or just digging an open-pit mine. (Quarries are for stone, pit mines are for ores) That way, gathering enough iron is just a case of exploring the surface on the lookout for clues as to the ores down below. When you find an area rich in iron, you can set up a mine and have a practically permanent supply. To compensate for the rest of the world being largely barren, with coal spawning at a specific layer and more richly under more forested biomes (less under biomes without trees), iron spawning in large clumps spread far apart from each other, and gold being generally rarer outside of mesas, they need new rock types and things to use those rocks for other than just building. They also need more interesting things to find underground. Realistic caves with twists and turns, underwater sections, active streams through caves and perhaps even new mobs or items that can only be found in caves, rather than just underground anywhere. (Speleotherms? Calcite for concrete? Fish that charge at you to explode and leave behind a pile of sulfur in their symbiotic plant pod?) These would make caves interesting and worth exploring. The vast majority of the world aside from caves would be solid rock, which is extremely nice for building projects as there are no more sounds of monsters or ambient cave noises below.

Make Iron-based crafting recipes less expensive and we can maybe discuss removing them. a simple super smelter requires several stacks of iron for the hoppers alone and iron is required for pretty much every Redstone build and it's too much effort to slave underground for severely hours to just begin any project that needs hoppers. Unless iron-based crafting becomes more efficient like 3 iron per hopper or 2 hoppers per 5 iron (just an example) then mining will always be a last resort. Iron mining is profitable you can get several stacks from just about any large cave system. The problem is mining just isn't as fun of activity as building a machine is.

I think removing them is an unwise decision that will only kill the popularity of the game causing it to receive less attention and eventually no attention stopping any further content updates(I’m talking long term future here) If you don’t want iron farms or think they are too exploitive, then simply don’t use them. I think the title of the game is being used too literally Mine Craft you mine and craft and that’s what the game is about seems to be the idea. That’s not what Minecraft is to everyone, It’s much more. Yes mining and crafting are crucial elements of the game, but that’s all they are crucial elements to the game not the game itself. Minecraft is about creativity and developing your environment to your needs/wants, expressing yourself. For me personally, and many many others utilize redstone components heavily and don’t have the time to mine 5120 blocks of iron ore for 10 stacks of hoppers for a big redstone project. It’s infeasible and impossible when you have a job, school, sports, family and friends all to attend to. That’s where iron farms and other “exploits” come in to play so we can actually achieve what we set out to do in a realistic time frame. I do agree with patching duplication glitches but patching farms is a no. Why do people insist on restricting their fellow gamers choice? Minecraft is world how you make it so design it around you and solely you. Play how you want not how people want you to play because it fits their definition of fun. People have different preferences and restricting choice only restricts those preferences. Chose how you want to play and if someone chooses to play differently than you that’s fine, that’s their definition of fun in the game. It’s literally so simple, don’t like it? Don’t use it. Like it? Then use it. Get off your high horse and stop forcing people to play a certain way and let them play their own way. That’s what makes Minecraft fun, freedom to do whatever you need/desire without restrictions of choice.

Ever since then, I've been using iron farms. Sure, they aren't as great as Java Iron Farms, but they still get the job done. Do I force other people to build iron farms when I'm playing with them? No. If they want to take the mining route, power to them for having the patience to do it. Sure, some bugs are abused and exploited, but you can't say that when what you're advocating against a feature that abides by the game's rules. It's simple. You make create the space that meets all spawn conditions, mob spawns, gets killed, you get resource.

"The game should return back to its roots of mining." Should it though? Minecraft as a game has changed so much from its roots in so many ways that without a full massive mining rework it's just not going to be fun. If the game stops being so much about mining in the late stages? That's probably fine. Just because the focus of the game changed isn't a good idea to change it back. On top of that blaming "parts of the community toxic to change" is a bad example. The combat update wasn't liked because it wasn't intuitive, wasn't fun, and yes because the old system was better. The current system we have now STILL isn't that great nor well liked, which is why theyre trying to change it AGAIN. Massive mod farms have their place in the game as an aspirational goal for players in the early stages. Also also: do you really want the game to just go from one grindy farm (iron golems) to two? "because it wasn't intuitive" spam clicking vs needing to wait before hitting... Let's ask what all other games think of that... Yeah no, spam clicking isn't intuitive, and having attack cool downs is something very much normal
@neyte7313
@neyte7313 4 года назад
The old combat system was really unfair though. You have a better mouse than your opponent - you win. You install hacks because you want to feel better - you win. You use any autoclickers - you win. Yes, spam clicking was more dynamic, but it wasn't good for any kinds of strategies and didn't test your timings. 1.9 pvp is not the best option (mainly because you deal too little damage) but is sure better than what we had.
@deadshotruby6667
@deadshotruby6667 4 года назад
The way the system was before we had cool downs was inefficient. Spam clicking degrades your weapon faster, and if you're hitting someone over and over, while they're in the red already taking damage, they're not going to take even more damage until they're no longer red. At the same time, your sword is losing durability without it doing damage. The way it is now, it forces you to wait until what you're hitting isn't red anymore, allowing you to deal damage consistently without wasting durability.
@janosd4nuke
@janosd4nuke 4 года назад
Ohh, you don't wanna go there with the old combat. People were used to it and is faster pace but genuinely the stupidest combat "system" I've ever seen in a game, obviously a placeholder. Kinda surprised it survived as long as it did. And on iron farms not the grindyness is the trouble, but it bring based on an exploit of a game mechanic intended for totally different purpose. Let's get iron farms on a separate mechanic that is more controlled so won't result in skewerd economies on tech oriented servers. Also not forcing players to turn villages into concentration camps for their unholy rituals is kind of a good message.

@TheBlackRangerPL 4 года назад
I agree for the most part, but I disagree on the combat update side. Maybe it's because I never really liked PvP, but I loved 1.9. It provided a challenge while fighting mobs and made you think how you approach the attack before acting instead of running at a mob and spamclicking. The point I'm trying to make is that 1.9 isn't universally hated, there are people who liked it and there are those who did not, like with everything in the world.

You know, with all the uses that Iron has in the game, there are actually very few places you can get the iron itself or something crafted with it. Rails can be found in mines, and you can always destroy a village for its resources ( though like iron farming, this is also poor taste ) but that’s about it. There’s the random loot that drops in places like the Woodland Mansion and in Dungeons, but the spawn rate of these also tends to be too low to genuinely want to do, which is what lead to the entire “ players burn down woodland mansions “ debacle. I think a really simple way to make mining for iron easier is to just start legitimately implementing iron products more often in design, for instance, the Mineshaft could also include a sort of processing area in its structure that a Minecart with Hopper loaded with ingots or coal could be poised near, the Hopper leads to Furnaces or Blast Furnaces, and those can be full of up to a stack of a random ingot or smooth stone. You could even have it set up that if you push the cart forward, it’d activate everything and start up some of the abandoned mine’s old processes. On that note, adding even more structures to explore, underground or not, would still get people playing more of the game than just farming iron. An old, abandoned farm full of seeds and unharnessed plants, a few seed barrels, and maybe a few tools like Leads, Name Tags, and Saddles. Have it reclaimed by Illagers or lone villagers at random, and now you have places that have a story. Maybe have an old Armory structure filled with undead mobs wearing armor, armor stands that have one or two items on them at random, randomized banners. Hell, you want to make things even more interesting, why not add a new neutral race in? We have villagers, but why not Dwarves, a literal mining race, that could deal with the still not implemented Rubies instead of Emeralds and have more of a focus on Metal goods? They could be less immediately friendly, more heavily fortified, and use structures that tend more towards the various types of stone and metal instead of Villagers and wood. Better yet, they’re dwarves. Their cities could randomly spawn in cave systems and they could have farms of mushrooms that sustain them. Not only would they provide more variety to mining than the occasional mineshaft or dungeon, but the area around them might be more heavily open because they mined it out, and because of that, specimens like Iron and Gold might be more easily accessible in those areas, not to mention more traded by the dwarves there. You could honestly use a lot of the updated villager AI and even for the most part, palate swapped structures already put in place, with professions mainly only changing the tables of goods they offer you.

pepsi Atlas I think the reason is that the underground had a lot of changes years ago when mineshafts, dungeons, strongholds, and silverfish became a thing, so most people just kind of assumed that it was done. But considering the nether is working on an update with a more neutral version of pigmen coming, and the recent Bee mob, I’d say that Minecraft’s future updates are going to focus on filling up a lot of the emptier spaces in the world with actual life and ai. While I’m just spitballing ideas, it’s clear that they are looking to overhaul a lot about the world to make playing a normal game even more of an complex experience than before. That said, dwarves might not be an idea on their radar right now, but I’d like to think exploring underground should be for more than getting iron and diamonds because that makes the underground itself kind of a shallow experience of a need to do it rather than a want to do it. An open ended game should all be about wanting to explore for your own sake, not for a resource. The resource comes as a reward for the journey, a thing you find along the way.

I like the idea of dwarves. (As it happens, I'm actually making a dwarf-ish base in my current survival world.) We definitely need to be able to have more 'side quests' in the game and more mechanics we can interact with. Another system which I'd like to see implemented which could fix some issues for the more casual player, are quest villagers/entities (nitwits?). They could for example give you half a stack of iron if you managed to retrieve a lost item of theirs from a guarded fort or something along those lines. It would give players a goal to work towards with an actually usefull reward in the end.

This basically just says "remove iron golems because their intended spawning mechanics are being exploited in ways the developers didn't intend." The same argument could be made for witch farms for redstone, gold farms and tree farms, all of which use 100% intended mechanics in unintended ways. Unless you literally make iron golems, zombie pigmen/zombified piglins and witches stop dropping those items or just flat out remove them, they're going to be exploited regardless. I don't think removing iron golem farms will solve the "issue" if there even is one, the supposed "issue" is that some people don't like to spend hours manually collecting resources and instead want to focus on other projects

I get what is being said here, but I also feel like it's really just swapping one method for another. You bemoaned The fact that iron golems didn't really make sense and do what they were intended to do. And yet with 1.14, Mojang paid attention to that, and made the mechanic make sense and very useful for villages finally. It's arguably imperfect, but it's there. I see what you're saying about it making more sense to do it a different way, but at the end of the day it really is just a different way of doing it and the end result is the same. If I'm not making a mob farm to kill iron golems, then I'll be making some other technical contraption to get iron. Thus, the argument you're making falls apart simply because you're merely shifting acquisition methods. Iron golems are part of the core gameplay of Minecraft. Those're some definitely a very controversial things you're saying there, Sarc For one, another one of the reasons why Iron farms are needed are because in reality, iron is *limited* Sure, you have (30,000,000 x 30,000,000 x whatever height you can start finding iron) blocks to find them, but that doesn't make it unlimited. On top of that, things like Hoppers, Pistons, *Minecarts & Rails* (yeah, this is a flaw in your minecart idea) use *WAY* more iron than you might have Another flaw in your minecart idea is the fact that Minecarts eventually unload, & thus don't work anymore. That means this mining process will eventually just break itself if the player's not close enough. It would require that some minecarts load chunks around themselves as well, which (in similar scales to big iron farms) will probably be laggier to an iron farm. Also, it wouldn't really have the same feel as iron farms: 1.) Iron farms are going from being high in the sky to down in the ground. 2.) Instead of being a massive group of beds, villagers, etc, it'll just be a bunch of super long boring minecart tracks, it'll be real hard to make it look good without installing tons ofdispenser minecarts to make the tunnel pretty Next, as another comment here (& probably other comments as well) said, even if this is Mine-craft, that doesn't mean you *have* to mine for everything. It's a sandbox game, not just a mining & crafting game. As the Minecraft version of Thank You goes "Thank you for making a game that *no one plays the same*". There's no proper set of rules in Minecraft, especially ones that say: "You must play this way, not that way" Also, you've (unfortunately) made 1 of the biggest mistakes I've seen older generations (in this case, older generations of Minecraft players) do: *dislike change* . You can't always expect things to be the same forever, Minecraft included. If people wanna bend the game in ways that help them, that's not bad. Just let em be & do as you plea' So, I'm SORRYSarc, but I think you still deserve to be 'tied to the stake'

The main problem is setting up super complex iron farms isn't very user friendly. A problem minecraft faces a lot. They don't have to remove iron farms but more alternatives for the average joe to obtain iron maybe with less autonomy would be nice. The cart idea is flawed without a lot of thinking but it doesn't mean there aren't other ideas that could still automate mining, on a block basis or on a "generating Iron" basis. At the very least biomes that have better iron yield and other ore yields and potentially the megavein idea from some form of Miner villager would be nice.
@Healion123
@Healion123 4 года назад
@@EmeraldCrowz I think if some sort of alternative was to be made, it wouldn't be something that mines ores underground anymore, like how an iron farm works. At a certain point, you should be able to make your *own* iron already, rather than always mining it. That's 1 of the big things with iron farms, they *change* the way you get iron. On the other side, mining machines or anything else that keeps the fact that it uses iron from underground is flawed in at least 2 ways: 1. The fate of the machine is always at the hands of your world-gen, which can cause it to be inconsistent in efficiency. An iron farm makes iron withOUT relying on world-gen 2. Chunk-loading. Because the only part of a Minecraft world that is always loaded is the spawn-chunks, most ideas for automatic mining are rather out of the question

Part of the problem with "an update they don't need to play on" is you gotta remember just how much of the playerbase is on Bedrock edition now, where we are forced into whatever the newest update is (which currently sucks, cause at least on Switch, the game is an unstable disaster). So the anger part is honestly understandable, though I'll also say it never justifies being an asshole over it. My thing honestly is just that, I feel like they're past the point where they really can remove these farms without major and semi justified backlash. All these different farms are really seen as features of the game at this point and are actually a draw to the game. Even look at so many of the big popular Minecraft RU-vid things like Hermitcraft, and what a massive amount of the things they do stop being possible if iron farms get removed. Mining in game is fine enough as a player, but it's the most boring thing ever to watch, and now everyone who makes videos on the game now have to spend that much more time doing it, and I don't really see any way to make breaking a lot of things and taking resources back home interesting.

@@CyborgPenguin actually a lot of the anger with changes amounts to forced change without options. Two examples that can be given quickly that have both upset the community as a whole when intoduced. Hunger and the combat update. The hunger addition was not as reviled but it sure did ruffle some feathers. In both cases it would have been pretty acceptable to just add a game rule to use the old rules. In this case people could choose between having to eat whenever hurt and not dealing with the limiting factors of low hunger, or passively regenerating at the cost of hunger. Preferable in my case as I rarely get hurt but have to eat due to it also being tied to stamina. In the case of combat people could opt for the simplistic elegance of the old combat system, or the more nuanced and rewarding feel of the new combat system. In both cases I would personally opt for simplicity since it generally gets in the way of what I'm currently doing. I don't like having to stop to eat every few minutes because I'm sprinting around my builds. And combat for me is a chore and either requires me to stop what I'm doing and deal with an annoyanace, or set the game to peaceful which is also annoying because I will have to turn it back on later. My primary thoughts: You're overthinking this. My secondary thoughts: An upgrade to mining would be awesome in a cave update. If this provides a sufficient way of getting mass amounts of iron without doing tedious work, then I think it could replace iron farms. I just don't understand why you think iron golem farms should be removed just to be replaced with something that still gives you loads of iron. Also, one more thing. I beleive Minecraft's name has two parts that represent the two aspects of the game. Mine, and Craft. I don't mean literally mining and crafting, although those are legitamate parts of the game. I mean that "craft" refers to the building, the creating; and "mine" refers to the gathering and collecting of the resources needed to build and create. On a base level, that literally IS mining and crafting, but as you progress in the game, that get's more sophisticated. Just my thoughts. Have a nice day.

"Minecarts are pretty user friendly" chunk loading issues, bugged, can act unpredictably, badly coded, need to be overhauled "Activator rails make no sense, they are pointless" Oh dear god... don't let the redstone and techinical community hear you say that. Signal strength: "doesn't seem that anything really uses it" stop just stop, now you are just embarrassing yourself and highlighting that you never attempted to build anything using redstone. "The game has forgotten its roots" - I dare say you forgot its roots, it's a sandbox, yes you mine and craft to then enable you to do and create whatever you want, but as soon as they introduced creative mode, the game moved beyond 'just mining' We have mob farms and crop farms, and now villager trading, Mojang understood the technical community was creating all kinds of farms within the game and have embraced these, they are an accepted part of the game. If it's just about mining then you'd have to get rid of all mobs and all crops. As for your 'alternatives' the quarries that the scicraft server uses creates massive amounts of lag and puts a lot of strain on most computers, it is unrealistic for most people to use such auto quarries, especially as you now have underwater caves since 1.13. Plus it involves a lot of resources and goes way beyond what most minecrafters are capable of in terms of construction due to the technical difficulty involved in their construction. Simply adding more iron for people to mine is not a solution, iron farms exist because you want to automate the gathering of iron without mining, they instead want to focus on their other builds, the same goes with the TNT, you are still taking people away from building. The minecart idea, you are basically suggesting that Mojang create a method of automining for players that involves little to no effort, one that would remove ALL manual mining from the game because once you get enough stuff to setup the minecart system and go, why would you bother mining ever again? This isn't to say that iron farms since 1.14 need to be altered, they do, they have become far easier to construct and give much higher rates than ever before, but it is the mechanics of the farms that need to be altered, not the farms being outright removed. The method of spawning a golem, the rates, and what constitute a village all need to be reassessed

So, remove the automation to replace it with automation? Because that's your final idea in a nutshell. Also, Minecraft isn't a mining game at the core. It was designed as a sandbox game. Just because everyone prefers the farm doesn't mean it must be removed. People like the farm because it's automatic, and a easy and renewable way to get iron for the (way too many) recipes that. require it. People want to focus on something other than mining.
@НиколайИванов-в8ы1я
Arctic Dino surprise - everything humanity was doing during the last ~300 years is optimizing automation. The main problems of iron farms is the amounts of lag they produce. At the same time things like quarries from build craft were stable even during 1.3.2-1.6.2 (versions that were notably laggier than the others). Also iron farms are visually abysmal.

Unless Mojang plan to totally rebalance iron recipes I agree the game needs an automatic, renewable way to get iron. However Iron Golem farms are really unintuitive, how to build one basically requires a tutorial to explain the mechanics to you. Also thematically they're really evil. Golems offer your flowers and want to be your friend and you murder them over and over. Replacing it with a new infinite iron method like extracting iron from infinite iron patches at bedrock using a redstone device would both fit Minecraft's theme better as well as fill the need for large amounts of iron.

Think about it, they're used for auto crop farms, they're used for trading, they can be manipulated into breeding for as many as you want, and they're an essential component to the Iron Farm. Villagers are what's overpowered here, they're cornerstone for various mechanics right now. I honestly love it, because strip-mining and caving are things I don't particularly enjoy and the ability to rapidly power myself up the second I find a village is really convenient, but I can see how it's pretty overpowered at this point.

Nothing needed to be removed or replaced. If you consider this an exploit, at the level of duplicating items, then mob farms, cactus farms, and all other types of contraptions that allow you to get items without taking your swords or tools and harvest will need to be changed, and that would kill a part of the game that is extremely loved by people who have been playing this for almost 10 years like me. Mining after all isn’t really what the game is supposed to revolve around. It’s about playing your way, enjoying the game how you choose to, so then why remove a part of what others enjoy about the game? Because you disagree with it? I’m personally not big on iron farms but honestly I don’t think the mechanic should be removed, after all you can choose whether or not to use it depending on how you like to play. If we’re to remove this mechanic we might as well just remove all mob drops since they can also be automated, that is if you apply the logic that is being used here.

@@CuroxX What Mojang has to do is not necessarily focus on both the mining/"vanilla" community and the farm community at the same time, nor should it remove anything from either side.
