Are you considering entering a longer distance triathlon this year?

Yes, I did my first 70.3 last year and will attempt a full IM this year. I'm worried, mostly about the amount of work required, so I'm planning to work with a coach to force me to be accountable, among other reasons.

Yes I did my first Triathlon last summer (sprint distance) and plan to do an olympic distance this summer as my 2nd Triathlon. Hoping I can manage keeping almost the same training programme than for the sprint one, but with a bit more training because work/life balance can be challenging sometimes when having young kids at home and a stressful work #GTNCoachesCorner

I just realised that I've been training for an Olympic using a training plan which, with an extra four weeks, will easily get me up to a 70.3. This weekend, I had a half marathon, a 2km swim and an 80km bike. I'm not fast, but I feel like I could do the distance...

#gtncoachescorner how often should you do an FTP test? monthly? after a training block? start or end of season? include as part of training?

#gtncoachescorner: I am 15 and about to do an Olympic distance triathlon in March. I have done triathlons in the past but only kids ones. How do I deal with everyone swimming on top of each other at the start of the swim? Love the vids guys

#GTNCoachesCorner - I'm a newly diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic well on my way to reversing the condition (lost weight, massively changed diet, AND now training for a Sprint Triathlon in June thanks to GTN). Do you have any recommendations on adjusting Triathlon training for people with Diabetes? My endo and cardiologist are in support of my training, but not much help with this question of how to adjust training:-).

#GTNCoachesCorner During triathlons I tend to go at 95-100% on the swim and bike legs because each discipline is different enough that it feels like I don’t need to worry about pacing them. Is that common or should you be more cautious on the first 2 legs in order to have a better run leg and overall best outcome?
@michaelhardie9193

#GTNcoachescorner from my understanding the rule of thumb is wait 48 hours in-between high intensity sessions (intervals). How do you spread this out is you want 2 sessions per discipline a week? Do you double up intense sessions on the same day (run morning, bike evening), or can you do back to back intense sessions as long as you switch the discipline (ex Run Monday, Bike Tuesday)

#GTNCoachesCorner I have recently started running and I have been having a few issues with how tight I tie my shoelaces. I often over tighten them which causes my feet to go numb while running, or I under tighten them which then makes it feel as if my shoes are going to fall off during the run. Any tips or tricks when tying shoelaces?
@SimonMathews
@SimonMathews 2 года назад
I used to do this too, but the trick I learnt is to lift my arch whilst tying the laces, make them snug but not too tight, and when I relax my arch there's just the right amount of slack for me. I hope this helps.

Hi GTN, I would be really interested to hear your guys take on lactate training. It appears it's becoming a major training tool used by the likes of Gustav Iden, Kristian Blummenfelt and now Lionel Sanders. Is this type of training used instead of really high intensity training or in addition? Has this type of training been around for long, or has it slowly come into athlete's training plans? Thanks!

#GTNCoachesCorner Hi all, I’m a not so fast runner on the heavier end of the scale, though can put in 8+km comfortably for my long run, and typically run three times a week (long run, intervals or tempo, and recovery run) totaling 15-20km Sometimes life gets in the way though, and your training time can take a massive hit for a few weeks - I have noticed that even though I can get my distance back up relatively quickly, my pace and estimated VO2 max can take months to get back to where it was before the break. Any tips to firstly minimise the impact of unplanned breaks, and secondly to get back to where things were more quickly? Cheers, Simon

Hey GTN coach’s corner question for you: I’m very new to swimming and find I can only swim any distance if I’m using a pull buoy to keep me afloat. As soon as I remove it my legs sink, I kick much harder, breathing goes up, I panic, and I’m done. I’ve heard mixed messages of the importance of the kick in triathlon swimming but wanted your suggestions and advice. Thanks!
@jamiefuhrman403
@jamiefuhrman403 2 года назад
Make sure you use the #gtncoachescorner if you want a chance at a response! My take is kicking is obviously an essential part of the stroke but you don't want to overdo it since saving those legs is crucial.
@oliverc1293

Hi Jeff, hope you're well. There are some good GTN videos and Essential Swimming tutorials on this, but to summarise what's helped me: I prefer not kicking too much (to save legs / hips for bike and run), but firm, slow kicks well timed with your stroke can be a great way to keep your feet nice and high in the water and your body in that streamlined position. I hope that makes some sense. It took me a bit of trial and error, and I'm not perfect now by any means! Also, a minor point: wear tight-fitting shorts / speedos. The drag from loose shorts was way more than I ever appreciated. Making that change has really helped.

@@oliverc1293 hey Oliver, thanks very much for your reply and information - I’ll definitely keep it in mind and try it out. I watched one of GTN’s videos specifically about sinking legs and have some things to practice during my next pool session. Thanks again!

Hey guys. I just came from my swim workout and we were talking exactly about this. I started swimming in May 2020 and did a 70.3 in October (40min total time swim). Your arms are the most important. Work on technique. What helped me a lot is a channel: ru-vid.com. Really recommend him. He can even coach you. Just keep your training.. you’ll be sliding on the water sooner then you think 😊

#coachescorner Hey guys, I’m always thankful for the tips of which I need one right now also 😅. I have been training for my first 70.3 Puerto Rico race since Early December 2021 , the race is in mid March. My training has been set up so that I “could” run de half marathon at a 9 minute per mile pace. I do very nicely all my practice runs, but all my targets, but just to see where I’m at I did my first Olympic Race late December. I achieved the 9 minute per mile pace I was looking for ( didn’t want to run faster, did more as a text to see how I am) but my retort while running was way harder then anticipated. After the run I probably could have ran 1 mile more but I felt like I was dying. I’m afraid I won’t be able hit my target race pace for the 70.3 , but in practice I do it fine. Any tips?

I'm trying to get faster at my sprint distance. I've already 'taken part' in some. Now I wan to compete. I'm stuck at doing 17km in 30 minutes on the bike. I need to be doing 20km in 30 minutes to stand a chance. If anybody has tips on how to get faster, please share. At the moment I figure I just need more muscle and keep chipping away at getting leaner although too early to say whether it will help. I'm thinking Newtonian theory here (F=m x a and v=u+at) so I'm sure something will improve.

More training. The more hours you do on the bike the higher your power will be. You can also buy a tri bike but they are expensive. A good quality tri suit is also helpful.

@Oliver C. OK. Thank you all. It looks like I’m on the right track and need to exercise a little patience. On Sat I do Electro Muscular Stimulation training. Sun I bust a vessel on the Tacx (only 20km) immediately followed by a run as fast as I can (only 1 km as I also need to be getting closer to 1 km in 4 minutes). Mon core exercises, weights and swimming specific exercises. Tue zone 2 on the Tacx immediately followed by zone 2 run. Wed back to core, weights and swimming specific exercises. Thu interval training on the Tacx immediately followed by interval sprints running (be SUPER alert/careful with that hamstring). Each sprint to failure (or chest explodes) and as many as I can. Fri back to core, weights and swimming specific exercises. Lots of sleep sometimes with 3 little arnica pills depending on how beaten up I feel. With the running sprints, make sure you push your hips forward so that your foot lands directly underneath.
