I gotta tell you, man, you're really a refreshing voice in the weird world that is tool reviews--I was telling people with complete amazement that you said you preferred the DeWalt 12 over the Milwaukee 10 straight up as opposed to, "Well, for different jobs..." and even though it's a $110 brush and you probably wouldn't have been able to pull over the "YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT A $110 BRUSH WILL DO" video over on people, it's really a stand-up thing to do. If you're half as honest with your customers, you deserve every bit of business you get and more.

HogsHeadStudios I actually am really interested in flooring. You should make some videos!
@HogsHeadStudios

Haha, the installation we do is mostly tile in restaurant kitchens/retail stores, but I do hardwood refinishing on the side--you talking about being able to do stuff like paint/frame/trim and just generally wear many hats as a huge asset got me to thinking about flooring and finish work. I'm cleaning up after a college kid now who bailed mid-project who was sort of doing the same thing, just totally in the wrong order (floors, then paint the walls, then do the trim?). When you're working on old houses versus historic homes around here (I work in Mass, there's a reason TOH started here), in one room you'll often find 60s carpet over 300sqft of beautiful hardwood that usually doesn't need a lot of work along with 60+ LF of baseboard, Wainscoting and big crown. And people typically want to keep the authenticity of the home without going broke or putting you up for months, so you can A) make a lot of money in one place and B) the referrals are way better and usually worth at least as much as the job itself. I quote anywhere between $3-7sqft for sanding/refinishing ("condition" aka how flush the edges are/water damage, nails/holes, shape of the room, if they have any specific finish requests, etc), but I know when to pass on floors that I know I don't have the equipment or manpower to prep. Other than regrouts and touch-up, I mostly turn down residential tile jobs, but there's good money in regrouts (my baseline is $3/sqft on up), again especially if you can bundle. You have to deal with light plumbing (remove & replace toilets, pedestal sinks, etc) but it's kinda fun--vanity installs and stuff like that are good money, and all this stuff keeps you in place for a few days in a row, which I really prefer. I've seen some good videos on flooring but maybe I'll contribute myself! If you have hardwoods in your rental or some iffy tile, you should see if your landlord would let you tackle refinishing/repair--I learned to refinish doing work on the side for my landlord and my mother-in-law, it was a great opportunity. Shoot me a message if you want some info on products for tiling--I'm not much an expert on finish/wood flooring products but I can point you in the direction you want for tile. Awesome to hear from you either way--almost like being part of a community helps you make more money!

@@FinishCarpentryTV watching this very late.. Im not sure if your opinions on this paint are but you're likely spreading it too thin and "playing" in it too much. I liked it a LOT but the emerald urethane trim enamel is worlds apart. Have used them both in Pittsburgh and Vegas so very different climates/humidity levels and temps.
@seanmcaleavy2369
@seanmcaleavy2369 6 лет назад
Just a tip from a lifelong painter who actually went through an old-school apprenticeship. When painting trim, or anything for that matter, you want to start your stroke from the unpainted side of the piece and paint into what has already been painted.For instance, if working from right to left, as is being done here, you would start at the corner and stroke left to begin, but then all subsequent strokes would be from left to right, (ie. from unpainted into the previously painted area). This eliminates lap marks. It is especially important to do this with modern latex paints as they dry way too fast and the window for working the brush marks out of the paint has been drastically reduced. The latex extender products do greatly help but you have to test them first with the paint that you are using because they are incompatible with certain paints and can screw with the sheen. For example, Flotrol works great with Ever-Guard paint but when used with Dunn Edwards it will turn semi-gloss almost flat. I am not trying to be some "know it all" dipshit here, just throwing out a useful tip for anybody who may want to use some tried and true techniques. Peace
@Road_to_Tolaria
@Road_to_Tolaria 6 лет назад
Your advice is correct. I would add to that: Don't wipe your brush on the side of the can. You just took off more than 1/2 paint you dipped to put on. Tap the brush on the inside side of the can instead. Tap both sides. I like using full gallon cans as well for the space to do this. Another advantage is that it will help keep paint at the top of the brush from drying out, because you won't be smearing it out thin. Second advice, if your painting with waterborne, before you begin, wet your brush in water. Then shake out all the access. Keeps the hairs flowing smoothly and reduces efforts when it comes time to clean. Love your work. I learned a lot from watching you.
@seanmcaleavy2369
@seanmcaleavy2369 6 лет назад
Good advice! What I like to do with the gallon can is run a regular kitchen can opener around the top of the can to remove the whole top lid receptacle. That extra inch in the diameter of the can opening makes a huge difference and also helps when tapping the brush on the inside of the can. Of course, this should not be done if you only have that single can and you are not going to be using all of the paint.
@hj8607
@hj8607 6 лет назад
was true for oil and even more so for faster drying latex . level into the wet or you will drag( thin out) and brush stroke the wet . (may not show till it dries )
@briansierzega
@briansierzega 6 лет назад
Great advice with working back into the wet edge and tapping the bristles inside the can (esp using an expensive brush like this one). Constantly rubbing the bristles on that metal edge will deteriorate them very quickly... Question for you guys: When painting trim, base, molding, etc, etc....(and assuming you are painting the walls after), have you ever used a 3.5” hot dog roller to apply, then lay it off with a brush? Just curious if you have and if you got good results. I showed this to an ‘experienced’ painter once, and he looked at me like I was nuts..lol
@Road_to_Tolaria
@Road_to_Tolaria 6 лет назад
Brian Sierzega I'll "roll and tip" moldings it casings if I'm pre-painting the first coat before install. I don't generally do it after because I find it a bit hectic for my taste. But, if it's giving you good results keep it up

@deman817
@deman817 5 лет назад
I have been painting for many years and I have used the Luks brush. It's not worth it. I am a Wooster man at heart but I have some Purdy brushes I love for certian projects. The biggest deal with brushes is the quality and type of bristles. Certian bristles react and lay different paints better. I wouldn't use my exterior brush on interior work or visa versa. 90% of the quality of the paint job relies on the person behind the brush. Don't go cheap but $25-35 is plenty for a solid reliable brush.

Good brushes are quick and easy to work with but that price you paid does sound excessive. But you never know until you use one. I use Hamilton Prestige brushes here in the UK and a 3 inch Purdy. The Purdy cost £23 (30$) and the Hamilton Prestige brushes around £ 8 -12 (10 -16$) each. For any DIYer like myself these may seem expensive, but they are a real treat to work with. I always rinse out new brushes in warm water before using them just to get rid of any factory debris that may be in them. Perfectionists always look beyond cost of course. You do some great work by the way. Also, as a perfectionist, you should clean all paint from the rim of the can with a clean cloth soaked in brush cleaner/water so that the lid fits with a proper air seal. Another tip that was given to me is to cover the ferrule with some masking tape before painting. It saves some hard cleaning at the end of the day.

I think your evaluation of the brush is on the mark . When oil base was the only game in town (with any finish quality) I had Leibco Angular silk fine bristle (chinese bristle and ox hair etc. ) brushes that today would price at 60 - 75 $. Latex paints (water) can only be used with man made bristles that are no where near as rare or expensive . But paint stores see guys that think price can buy them talent walk in the door every day and they are ready for them !!

Another great video man. I paint a bit, but not on the level of a pro painter with decades under their belt. That brush looked great and I would assume the value would show more as you use over the next few jobs. Some things I look for would be.. Of course how well it holds and spreads paint, hand fatigue during the job, ease of clean up, and longevity of use. I’m willing to bet as it breaks in you will like it more and more. I liked the resting nubs, I think more brushed should include that feature to save on carpenters pencils. The packaging was very trendy, but a plastic wrap would suit me just fine. Just never...ever evaever.. let a customer use it! They just don’t clean them right...
@ultimateimpressionsautodet3065

While a $110 brush is outside my realm, I am about to kick off a trim/door project. Replacing everything in the house, so we're not covering existing paint. Stiff bristles are for precision straight lines. Also it looks like an "easy clean" type of brush. Ive worked 12 hour shifts painting stright lines. A more comgortable brush can be a huge relief. I have to agree with you guys. After trying many brushes Corona is the best. After a second coat on trim you can hardly see brush strokes. Some clients have asked if I sprayed. Brush pressure has a whole lot to do to the finish also.

Purdy is all I use and it is a great brush, would never pay $110 for a brush. I will try Corona, it looks like many folks seem to like it.

Thanks for that review. I'm no pro, like you, but it would be very hard for me to drop that much money in a brush. But I do know that I can do a much better job with a Purdy than any of the big-box brands.

Super pro tip about brushing, move your hand back towards the end of the brush. Faster and more range Tires the hand faster though. Purdys only for me

Those walls seem textured. Which tape are you using to cut in without having issues with the texture? I've tried a few and there's always an issue with paint bleeding through because of the textured wall.

The one thing I am wondering if the Ferrule is Stainless steel? The reason is I love my magnetic brush holders. Some stainless steel is non magnetic. Thank you for your time.

If you put some nail holes around the rim of the paint can it will allow the paint to fall back into the bucket instead of having to try and brush the paint back into the can

A few things I notice about the brush...the bristles seem much longer than typical brushes, they seem to stick together better instead of spreading out by the end of the day and the bristles are not bunched in the typical flat configuration. Maybe this different bunching holds more paint. I personally cannot do trim without a skew. The skewed brush was one of the greatest discoveries of my entire life. I do love Purdys but I'm also a big fan of cheap brushes. Some of them are really good. I especially love the really cheap ones with hollow plastic handles. Painting overhead all day with wood Purdys will wear you out.

More expense gives u a longer lasting brush, easier cleaning properties, bristles stay stiffer over a longer time, finer brush strokes, and it seems like a perfect fine trim brush, not meant for big area but more setting up the borders without tape and small trim. It worth it in the long term for a premium brush like that, and bristles will stay in place for a lifetime of use usually. I inherited my dad's premium brushes after he retired from commercial and private paint jobs and I still use them, but a premium wide and narrow brush should be available for any job if ur a painter. Just wash it good with mineral spirits and rinse with water keeping it clean is essential.

I was wondering if a Purdy for 30 bucks (Canadian) is worth it over a Simms at 10 bucks. I got the Simms 10 bucks - polyester 2 1/2 angled so far to do some cutting on the ceiling/baseboard. What I can tell is that if I roll over it with a 3" roller to blend it, it's all fine. If I use it alone it leaves brush marks - but so I read about the Purdy in a review. Any advice?

It's an elliptical brush. You should compare it to the Richards Fat Boy brush. Sells for $25.00 CDN - no idea what it would sell for in the U.S. Stiff bristles are for cutting. You tape your joints, so you really don'y need that brush.
