I visited the Blue Lagoon 22 years ago and it was nothing like it is now, apart from the water that is. You got changed in a tiny wooden shed and there was no walkway or steps or face packs. Just a pool, but we loved it ❤️
It must have been crazy to visit it back then. We also visited some hot springs along the ring road that were a little more rustic, but the Blue Lagoon is a pretty huge operation now
Remember that you must book the Blue Lagoon online!! No transport except expensive taxis or hire car. The swimming pools in Iceland are very good with hot tubs etc €8. Hverrgerdi is a brilliant place to visit with a hot flowing river.. you got to hike there 4kms from the town.. free and unusual. Solo travellers will stick out at the Lagoon amongst all the honeymoon couples and ladies groups. Still, your choice.
The Blue Lagoon looked so beautiful and relaxing. The only way it could have been more appealing to me is if there were complimentary scalp massages given to everyone. I'm just amazed at how beautiful it looks.
This seems to be a very interesting country I hope I can visit sometime in the future when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much!
Back in the days, Icelanders used to bathe every Saturday in one of these geothermal natural hot pools, as well as wash their clothes in them. This is why we call Saturdays "Laugardagur" which literally translates to "Pool day" :) Swimming pools are a big thing in Icelandic culture, kids are taught how to swim in elementary school, we do "sjóböð" (swim in the sea), we chat with strangers about weather and politics in public hot tubs and we just overall love being in the water :) It has been speculated that Icelanders have benefitted from the clean air, the natural pools, and the healthy food combination, Icelanders today are the descendants of those who survived in the olden days :) Survival of the fittest. Very nice seeing your videos as always, got a subscriber out of me :)
Thanks for Subscribing Katrin! We loved seeing all of the hot springs around the country and it was really cool that each small town has a swimming pool. That's a great thing for the community. I love the little history lesson you just gave us too. Thanks so much for that, I didn't know that about Saturdays being called pool days.
I love the way you picked that silica mask out of your nose! I should mention that there is another option now since May 31 for a lagoon experience. It is in Kopavogur, actually a suburb of Reykjavík and super close to the city. It is slightly more expensive but offers beautiful views of the ocean. It is brand new and just beautiful. The locals seem to like it very much. Just another option for us tourists. My family and I are taking a nine day trip to Iceland at the end of October and we might just encounter off-season prices! Here’s hoping. Thank you so much for your informative videos!
Ok, I know this is a difference between UK and Iceland, but in the UK we can shower with costumes on before we go into the pool (although many don’t bother showering at all). If you’re asked to shower without a costume, do they provide private cubicles, or at least some separation to allow some semblance of privacy for those of us with serious body anxieties? It’s a difficult enough mental exercise to be seen in public in a swimming costume.
You can close the curtain of the shower, and get privacy if you really try. But if you're uncomfortable with nudity you'll have a very hard time in that locker room. No one bothers to cover up
I visited the Blue Lagoon five days ago and most people showered with their suits on before getting into the water. There doesn’t seem to be any enforcement of doing otherwise. The showers were individual stalls enclosed in opaque glass. If you are concerned about being naked in public there, there is little to be concerned about beyond getting changed in front of your locker.
Tough choice... When we were there, sky lagoon was just opening. We chose Blue Lagoon, because we had looked at pictures of it for years, so it was kind of a bucketlist spot for us. I think you would be happy with either one. I would also recommend checking out some of the lesser known hot springs too. Those are really cool. We visit a few in our Western Iceland Ring Road video
The place is garbage. I was there last week (Monday at noon) and 5 days later tested Positive for COVID. Lockers were unavailable, at one point even the hot water went out at the showers (causing serious traffic for about 20 minutes). There were a lot of rowdy young people and the place had a spring break feel. The only thing missing was the rap and techno music and a volleyball.
Hi guys! I watched your videos in preparation to our Iceland trip and they were very helpful! I added a lot of your stops to our itinerary and we had the best time! Looking forward to our next vacation which will be surely following your tips!!!
Great videos! I’ll be going to Iceland next week. I plan on going to the blue lagoon and the volcano on my first day there since I arrive at 6am. Do you recommend going to the blue lagoon before or after the volcano?
@@natasha_rihs Nice! you'll have an awesome time. We have a video about our flight in and the Covid test and quarantine requirements for arrival in Iceland if you want to know what it is like.
I think you can stay as long as you want. So you could go first thing in the morning when the open and stay all day. We were good after about 3 hours though
Great videos. Although I was hesitant going to the Blue Lagoon, glad I went. It was so much fun. Fortunately it wasn't very crowded when we visited in mid June,
Thanks so much for these videos! Leave for a 12 day camper van trip on the 5th. It's been really comforting to see things to close to the time of departure. Question: how did you get to the blue lagoon after dropping off the camper van? The taxis appear to be really expensive.
Glad you like them and thanks for the support! We were staying in Reykjavik for a few days longer, so we rented a car after dropping off the camper van. We didn't see many taxis when we were there, but I would be willing to bet it would be more cost effective to rent a car for the day instead of taking taxis there and back
Yes it's pretty easy. You register on travel.covid.is and we were tested in Reykjavik. It cost about $55 usd per person and results are guaranteed within 24 hours
We went in May, In August it will be light out very late, the weather will probably be the warmest of the year, but it is also one of the most crowded months to travel
There is a lot of place where you Can swim in geothermal water and less expensive than the blue Lagoon. Some place are free like Reykjadalur Hot Spring Thermal River. Sow not worth it for me.
Yes there are, We visited some free hot springs, and some that only cost 10 dollars, but we wanted to experience the Blue Lagoon, just because it is so famous
I love the blue lagoon, but o use my Shea butter soup. I get 10 bars of soap for 10 bucks. Use it everyday, smell delicious. According to women who sit around me. Plus, my skin is in excellent condition. Kidding, enjoyed your video. Thanks much.
Visited in 2019, the lagoon was a beautiful, unique spot and definitely worth the hype. It’s very touristy, and when you first step into the water near the building where you check in it does have some theme parkish vibes. But if you walk further out into the lagoon away from the entrance it’s awesome. Great views, a very authentic feeling, and it’s very peaceful. Interesting looking rocks all around.
It is way overpriced. When I went back in 2016 it was half the current price of $70 USD for the cheapest ticket. For example, Laugarvatn Fontana hot spring is a natural one that is half of the price of the Blue Lagoon and is next to a lake with saunas.
The Pools have Silica Mud on the bottom (the white) and the water if pumped up from Geothermal vents that are deep underground. I think that is what makes the water that color
We worked with Happy Campers on this trip, So the cost of the camper was covered for us. But If you want to rent the same one that we did. It will run you about $90 USD per day
We visited some other hot springs on our trip, that we probably liked a little bit more than the blue lagoon, but we had to check out this one, just because it is so famous.
I have really been enjoying your Iceland series. Just subbed for Italy. I do have one question. I am going in August, and am about to book my Blue Lagoon appt. The first two hours are $61, and then beginning at 11am, it drops to $53US. Do you have any idea why those two early morning slots are more expensive?
Hi guys! I watched your videos in preparation to our Iceland trip and they were very helpful! I added a lot of your stops to our itinerary and we had the best time! Looking forward to our next vacation which will be surely following your tips!!!
Looking forward to seeing your trip. I got married in Rome, honeymooned in Florence. (Had holidayed in both previously) Had planned to take our 12 year old to visit Rome and Florence last summer.
Oh. I think you're the couple I watched when I was prepping for our Alaska tour (Denali part). We drove all the way to Chena hot Spring but didn't like their hot spring. Plus we didnt know kids are not allowed in the hot spring because it's untreated water. I am now in the beginning research for summer 2023, and we are considering Iceland. Are kids (dd is 13 years old) not allowed in the hot spring? I subscribed this time btw :-)
It's good to try a deep in the hotspring water when in Iceland. Since you guys went to the north, why not try the Myvatn Nature bath? It's much cheaper and less crowded. For me, I found Blue Lagoon is too touristy and only if you did not travel to the northern side, you can opt for this lagoon. Also if you have much to spend too. Or else, Myvatn is a good choice instead of this. Just my opinion.
We wanted to Go to Blue Lagoon because it is so famous and it was on our bucketlist. We also really wanted to go to GeoSea in Husavik, but we couldn't get the timing right
Thank you so much for this video, and all of your Iceland videos. I will be traveling to Iceland in September and hopefully enjoying my birthday in the Blue Lagoon! I hope our trip is half as a amazing as yours!
A similar experience is the natural mud baths in the Mar Menor in Spain. Nearest airport is Murcia or Alicante. My family have holidayed there at least 6 times. There is a large lagoon so safe water kids (shallow with no waves) mud flats a short walk. It’s all untouched, free entry, self service on the mud and hot water.
