I do this all the time and think it’s worth it. One big suggestion is to use channel lock pliers to break them down. The rounded top and strong grip let’s you roll the metal right out of the plug with almost no effort and without killing your hands. I started out without a vice and found that I could scrap them using 2 pairs of channel locks, one to grip the plug and the other to roll the brass pieces out.

It is ALWAYS worth it to do whatever to make some extra money. Anyone who says otherwise while sitting on their butts making nothing doesn't know anything worth sharing. Even if you averaged a dollar an hour for ten hours you still have more money than someone who spent ten hours watching TV or videos. Don't let anyone dissuade you from doing any honest measure to make some honest hard earned cash. Great video Shawn.

When I started scrapping I probably worked lots for a dollar an hour and sometimes even lost money (which still happens on occasion today) because I spent more on fuel than the scrap was worth. So I'm a "damn foul." At least I work for honest hard-earned money and pay my bills just like Freeisbetter86. What do you do? Wait let me guess. You sit at home in your mommy's basement playing video games and watching videos all day. Bet I nailed it!

That plug you showed that the prong broke off and left the wire in the plug is a replacement plug. Take the screws out and you can get the wire and the prongs out. I think I saw that you had a couple others that you can take apart.

I enjoy micro scrapping, so yes, I would definitely do it. It can be done on a rainy, or snowy, day. But I would do them as you cut them from the wire, rather than letting so many accumulate. A great video, as usual! Peace...

Worth it or not, I believe stockpiling of little bits n bobs for micro scrapping has kind of become a necessity now. OK it's not a great earner but in pandemic/lockdown scenarios if you can't get out scrap picking, what you going to do with all the time you have on your hands with no money coming in? Better to have a little bit than nothing. We should all have rainy day jobs , it's raining hard for a lot of people right now. Take care, Poo

Yes , it's worth it to take the black and white plug ends apart and get the brass and to me I have a better way to remove the brass from the plug ends . Take a pair of channel locks and hold the plug with that then use your side cutters to remove the brass bits n the copper tails. That way works faster.

I’ve figured that out too. Kinda “roll” the brass out sideways with my dull side cutters and they won’t break AND about and inch of wire comes attached. Also, do them as you get them and you only have a few at a time instead of 200! 😁 A vice takes WAY too long!

Here in Ireland, and over in the UK, plugs have three pins and they're a lot chunkier than your N. American plugs. I always strip my plugs, they are worth it. Good video as well.👍

New subscriber and long time scrapper! The old round brown and black bakelite plugs are salable on eBay if they are intact and in good condition. Collectors want them for accurately restoring vintage appliances and lamps. Worth about $5 each...a little more with the insulating cardboardish piece that covers the end. Sell them in a bulk lot of 5 for $25 or 10 for $50 to make it worth while. To scrap plugs I usually just take a pare of side cutters, and bend and twist the ends out, with the plug in one hand. It is a little faster than using a vice, though leaves some brass inside the molded ones sometimes, but it is negligible...and if you have any issues with your hands it can hurt, the vise is handy for the dryer/220 plugs though. The two piece plugs I usually take apart and usually pull out the brass from the back.

I clean everything. I guess it's how much you value your time. You had such a large amount to start with makes it seem hard but doing them as you go takes a lot less effort. Maybe take the big plugs apart because there is brass inside also as well as some copper.

I find that putting them in a vise takes too long. I simply grab them with a pair of adjustable pliers and use wire cutters to grab the pin and pull it out. The problem I am running into is sometimes the prongs will separate from the wire before its out, leaving some wire still in the plug. I still have to save the plug but getting the wire out will be difficult. As for the left over plastic ends I dont know how they would recover anything for the shred. But if they allow the material in the shred pile anyway then I would do that at that point.

Seems like it would be worth it to add it to your shred pile with the bits that are left. But as always ask your scrap yard because they are all different.

What you want is a more efficient method of pulling the metal out of the plastic. Build a wedge or cone shaped base and apply a lever so you can sit a plug on top of it and drive it apart with your hands. Or you could use a motor driven press of some description. By doing that you could in theory get every piece of metal scrap out of the plug and be left with just the plastic separated from the metal. I know of at least one scrapyard in Australia which does separate our plug ends with a simple lever pushing the plug end onto a metal separator. They might also use a magnet but basically if you can get the metal apart from the plastic faster, it would be very much worth it.

Basically think smarter not harder. Pulling them out with pliers is great and all, but takes a lot more effort. A simple lever splitter would make it 10x faster and much more productive.

I personally just started doing this method and stripping my plug ends. Before I would throw them all in the shred pile. Your yard will have no issue with it. What they don’t know doesn’t hurt them. Also if anything you are giving them a CBM for a cheaper price that will be further sorted by the people they sell to

As Roe Mantic said, you could boil the plugs (as Snobby the Scrapper does) to make sure you get everything out. Here in the UK we have different grades of plastic plugs. The really sttuborn ones you have to boil to make the rubber/plastic more malleable to get every bit out. Do your plugs have fuses in them? If they do the ends are brass & the thin strand of wire going through the middle is silver. Would be interesting to know.

Yes definitely do them after cutting for the day, but I think it’s roughly 120 plugs to make a pound. Not worth it on my end though not knocking anyone who wants to do it. Could you imagine a five gallon bucket full 😯 that would be a great payday.

I only do it after a few weeks has I don't get that much anyways. But I figured out that it takes 3 plugs to make a ounce. I still throw the ones that break off into shred. If everything comes out I throw it out has there is no longer any value in it.

I think it is definitely worth it, When I pull mine out I hold the one end with a pair of channel locks and use a pair of cutters to pull the prong out with the wire. Then I cut the wire off, And you have brass and copper. You waste more time putting them in the vice

I work for an electrical contractor and those big plugs, specifically the one u were holding when you asked the question, unscrew and have a good bit of brass inside them. Personally would be worth it to me to take them apart and get rid of the brass and copper especially if ur getting paid while doing it because idk how profitable it actually is otherwise.

I am a HUGE fan and wanna follow in your footsteps. (Never had a dad so i really do look up to you). I wanna start melting but i have no idea what i need or what i need to get ...CAN U PLEASE HELP ME??? Can u directly send me info that i woud need to melt aluminum and tin or other metals. AND whats the best thing to do with all the copper since we cant melt it!!

Great video. Enjoyed it. You got a great workshop, shame it's empty, as you could be earning alot more. I would put the whole lot in shred. The scrap buyers are always on a winner, shred is so low in price any way so it all helps. I had a go at this couple of weeks ago. I used a mole grip. Hard work but worth it.

Hey Sean i did the same awhile ago. i got a load of UK plugs broke them down and melted them. Got 2kg out it. i through the rest in the bin even though there was bits of copper and broken pins in them

I wouldn't shred those Hubble plugs. I wouldn't rip the brass out of them either. Especially the weatherproof ones there worth about 10 to 15 bucks a piece. Save it in case you need to replace one of your plug ends.

Certainly would say it's worth it if your increasing the value you get for the items its always worth it. Also if you take them to work and do them whilst waiting in cutoners it's not even taking time out of your day because your young to be there waiting for customers anyway so its a no brainer

Should have weighed before and after so you could see the difference in price between brass and shred. All of the "hospital plugs" (ones you can take apart with a screwdriver and rewire) you should have kept. They are expensive ($4-10) and good to repair a broken or nicked extension cord (prevents having to buy a new on).

Put your plugs in a pot of boiling water or heat them to boil in the pot and you will find them easier to pull apart

I think the salient point is...how much is your time worth to you! If you do this as you are doing something else, like watching TV or when you are just sitting around, fine. If it's worth it to you, then do it. VidVulture deems it a waste of his time because he works differently and doesn't want to waste his time microscrapping. He just takes it all to the scrapyard and takes what they give him for value. Even EwasteBen doesn't go to the lengths you did, but again, it's all in how much is your time worth to you. Personally I don't see it bringing more in cash than an hourly wage, but again, if you're being paid to be somewhere and don't have any business tasks to take up the time you spend there and they don't care if you do personal stuff on the side, then yeah. Might as well do SOMETHING rather than sitting around twiddling your thumbs.

no,i wouldnt.I keep smaller items w/copper,etc and when I have free time sit in garage or while watching a movie and clean.the lomg lights w/the ballasts,the end where u take out bulbs,in that piece theres almost all copper under thin plastic.I have coffee cans full of them.will get to them next wk.when things slow dwn..

Would it be easier to just burn all the plugs? Once it gets hot enough the plastic will just melt/burn off and if you leave it somewhere safe overnight I bet you would be left with a whole bunch of dirty brass (which you could burn again/clean ect.)

My scrap yard let's me leave the plugs on #2 Cu wire, which aren't worth stripping with the hand wire strippers that I've owned. I've scrapped thick plugs by chopping with boltcutters. I noticed he broke off some plugs flush without removing everything, so I wouldn't do this unless I boiled plugs 1st like Thubprint did. I wonder if soaking in cold water or room temperature water works as good as boiling. Short wires come apart in my mouth if I suck them.

Yes, those antique acorn plugs are starting to get hard to find, I value them at five bucks apiece easy as someone who collects them. They are always in demand for people, restoring, antique, radios, fans, etc..

here in ariz they will not take stripped wire.ariz is considered a transiet state and a lot of empty homes being stripped.a commercial buyer will buy but cheap but scrap yrds wont take.Ive been scrapping a bit over a year.Have lerarned a lot and enjoy doing it.the $ intake fluctuates,i do some weeks 2 times a day to yrd,first trip processed,2nd trip ,I go from scrap yrd to area I p/u at,vcans filled in an hr and go bck to scrap yrd,on a good wk. i go 4-5 times a wk..tell u what,it keeps gas in the car,dog food,as I have 5 and a few $ left for what-ever.My friends think Im crazy as Im 70 but Ive never been one to sit still.Its wrth it to me.

Sure if there’s still metal in them chuck them in shred. My new yard is paying me so well for ICW with plug ends that I’ve stopped clipping them.

i would go far as i can ;) allthe plugs that you can screw of the tap, go tor them, ir you have an lter grinder cut them, and you maby get get out alot more ;) in the end its still worth ever bit of it, but only go for the eay ones, rest of it take it to shred ;) great video ;) and i have also ALOT of plugs i will deal whit later ;)

Bro does your yard not let you leave those plugs on when you scrap that icw #2 ? My every one I go to always is cool with plugs on the wires for icw#2 45% recovery , n if its better wire I leave maybe 6 inches with the plug and boom no waste that's extra icw 45. And of course I'm yanking out them brass thingys it's easy af with the wire still attached using compound plier for yanks twist action. Idk works best for me to save time n money but yards be different I guess

There is no way I would beat my hands up for two hours to make an extra 10 bucks. I can make a lot more than that per hour with my strong, healthy hands. All of that could have been shredded just fine. The main thing is that we are not throwing pre smelted metal into the dump.

First place more then one in the vice and squeeze them now the time can be reduce... 2,3, at a time if the vice is wide enough.... sort them by likes.... The big ones that can be take apart by screw driver take them apart not rip them at all and you get more out of them..... The solid plastic one scrap as you did before or the alternative is to some how cut them in half or quarters and pick them apart..... if this more successful then ripping the forget ripping and go to cut in pieces.... thongs to cord side!!!! Make a 3 sided holder out of steel... line them up 2 or three in row then use downward press with a sharp blade to cut open!!!!!
