Back in 2020, the Seattle Seahawks traded two firsts, a third, and safety Bradley McDougald to the New York Jets. In return, they received Jamal Adams and a future fourth rounder. At the time of this trade, I was actually very supportive of this move. The Seahawks desperately needed help in their secondary and Jamal Adams was coming off his second all-pro recognition.
The big question back then was whether or not Pete Carroll and Ken Norton Jr. could make the most of his obvious talents. Would they put him in a defined role? Or would they be creative in his usage to maximize his gifts?
In this video, I discussed Jamal Adams, his role with the Seahawks, and how he’s playing so far during the 2021 season. The question I had while going through this film was whether or not Adams was being unfairly blamed for the Seahawks’ struggles? My answer to this question is: Yes!

If Jamal was making SOUTH of $8million, then no.....but since he is taking up $17.5 million in the cap, it his largely his fault.....that kind of $$ demands him to be a ballhawk and difference maker...a LEADER......which he isn't even close.

It is why he got burnt... but, it was also WHO was lined up against him. Has DJacks lost a step? Yeah. Is Jackson still a burner, who was one of the faster (prob fastest) straight-line runners on the field on that play? Yeeeup. Not arguing. At all, really, if nothing else, it just underline's and highlights what y'all are talking about. Having said that, just wanted to give DeSean some love. Not many oft-injured receivers, in their 30's, play in The League. There's another reason this play work's- besides the secondary's brain farts/bad positioning- Jackson STILL having jets, and adjusting to a so-so ball, should be credited as well. It could be argued, other than some pass-pro, Jackson was the only player, on that particular play, excelling at his job.

Issue I see, for entire secondary is zero contact and lots of confusion. That's on Ken Norton, no way wr should get free release every snap. Where's the aggression? That's what made us elite for so long, pre pass contact, try running your route MTHR Fer, we dare you. That half second allows zone coverage to work. Norton is to blame for majority. As evidence, let's watch how Flowers does by end of year for Bengals.

Its like the CB's are constantly forgetting what coverage they're supposed to be in. There was a play against Minnesota where the all the CBs were playing off during a blitz. Do they understand the concept of a blitz? You know, an attempt to force a sack or errant quick pass, so immediate press coverage on receivers is fairly important.

That play wasn't really Bobby's fault imo. If he followed Kittle then Debo would of been wide open in the middle. Just a good play call against cover 2 there. The problem for Seattles Defense is the poor execution COMBINED with a trash scheme. This is the NFL, not college, and there is absolutely no disguise to this Defense. Even young QBs can read these coverages like a book.

Jets fan speaking: Jamal Adams isn't a cover safety. He's a hybrid LB who needs to be playing near the line in order to make plays. At best, you want him covering a TE with the option to go on the attack every time the TE doesn't go out for a pass pattern. Simply put: He's a poor scheme fit for Seattle's defense. Sort of like Darrelle Revis was when he want to Tampa and was forced to play a Tampa-2 instead of aggressive man-to-man. Or Warren Sapp when he played a 2-gap NT in Oakland. Even great players can become ordinary when put into the wrong scheme, and that's the situation Revis finds himself in.
@ID0XX

Well put I feel like Pete wanted to prove a point to people that “Jamal can cover”. Jamal can cover just not against WR1’s like any other safety but he can. But he won’t be much of an impact as opposed to him in the box and roaming. They’ll figure it out this year with seattles new DC who’s going into a more aggressive hybrid defense. A lot like when he was with the jets.

I doubt Russ will play another down this season. If he comes back and the team is 2-8, forget about it! Russ isn’t going to risk his health for a potential 9-8 team, trying to save Pete Carroll’s job - which at that point would be the only possible benefit. If the Seahawks go 2-8 they might want to consider a midseason trade with Cleveland. And Cleveland doesn’t want to pay Baker Mayfield. A better trade would be Russ for Trey Lance and picks, but Pete Carroll won’t do that. He thinks he’s going to be coaching the Seahawks next year, and that he can keep Russ. Again, the Seahawks are now 2-4. If they lose their next four games, the Russell Wilson era in Seattle is over. You have seen his last game either in a Seahawks uniform or playing for Pete Carroll. I wish the Seahawks would trade Russ, DK, Tyler, and BWags to SF for Jimmy G., Trey Lance, Joey Bosa, and picks. DK = Joey Bosa + a cond. #2 if injured BWags = Jimmy-G Tyler + a #4 = a #1 Russ = Trey Lance + three #1’s Trey is 2 years away from being a legit starter. The Seahawks could turn around and flip Jimmy-G to Miami or Denver for two other pieces (or to ATL if Matt Ryan leaves), or a #1 and a #2. That trade would benefit both teams. Seattle needs its picks back, plus a new coach who will use them properly.

It was a brash, win-now move, that was overly optimistic about the win-now capacity of the team around him. Now we have to pay off our debt. Even as a jets fan i never had issues with adams. My issue is people not understanding that the reality is putting so much value and money into a position that, to be honest is the least valuable position on the field. Its not about how good he is. Its about if you remove him from the team what happens? We lost adams and maybe its not a fair comparison but our secondary is FAR better this year then in 2019 with him. Marcus maye was and is a overall better and more valuable player imo. Those picks and that money could have potentially been game changing for Seattle. SS are like running backs, they are a dime a dozen. CBs, OLBs, DEs are FAR FAR more valuable and worth investing in. They could have used one of those picks to draft a usable SS and pay him nothing for 3 years. Instead they gave up the picks and paid him millions. For what?

Adams is not an Ed Reed or Earl Thomas type player though... they were centerfielder ball-hawks, with ridiculous speed. JA should be compared to Rodney Harrison, using football IQ to accumulate sacks, pbu's, tackles. But like Sam says, he doesn't have a lot of help around him on the Seahawks defense, so he struggles

Samuel Gold can draw it up on the chalkboard with the best of them, but his FO game or at least his trade value chart might need some work. 2 First Round Picks for a Safety. A safety *who's rookie deal is about to expire and is angling for a record contract.* And not a Cover Safety at that, but a Down Safety / Money Backer type who might be a full time "WLB" before long because he's not a very good half field safety and a liability as a single high which means if he is playing as a true safety your DC is handcuffed and won't be able to disguise coverages and good luck stopping a modern pro passing offense while "tipping your hand" defensively. What I mean by that is you want to have safeties like Winfield from Tampa or Honey Badger....guys who can play as a down safety or as a cover safety bc that allows your defense to line up in a 2 high look pre snap...but at the snap either safety can rotate to a single high while the other rotates to a curl flat or a robber or a cover down or a blitz or what have you. And you can also show a single high look but have your down safety bail outta there right as the play clock gets low and play a middle field open 2 high coverage and that gives you a chance to create turnovers if the QB and WR are not on the same page bc often you just need to fool one of them with how these pro QBs throw the ball before their guy even makes the move at the top of his route and the route may depend on MFO vs MFC

From what I've watched, he doesn't play with any anticipation. They spend a whole week prepping for their opponents, their habits, their offense, receiver routes and their tells. He always seems to be caught out in the wrong place at the right time, either being boxed out from the play, or on his heels as the runner blows right by him. If I have counted every time he could have snagged an INT since last season, he'd be leading the league in takeaways. That last one in Pittsburgh where it dinged right off his facemask could have turned the ball over at a critical time to give his quarterback one more drive, and he just watched it fall to the ground. He's not the sole reason for the team's failures, but he's an unavoidable one contributing to chunk plays. He gets to call himself "best in the nation" on the SNF player intros, but he's never lived up to how he sees himself in his own mind.

Unfairly blamed? I mean, I wouldn't blame him solely, but his coverage is absolutely trash. He's there to be a gimmick and he's failing that miserably right now. The defense as a whole is to blame. He's part of that. The root cause being Norton. Furthermore it's Carroll.

I don't mean to be rude but I think your wrong about that play where Bobby Wagner let Kittle go up the seam. On that play Seattle is running a base cover 2 because Bobby Wagner is also being asked to watch for Trey Lance scrambling and that is why as soon as Bobby lets him go Jamal starts running over there because he know he has to cover up for Bobby not carrying that route. Any smart defensive coordinator wud rather force Trey to make a throw to the intermediate middle than let him run for 15 yards. My point is he wasnt supposed to carry that route because the call was for him to stay 10-15 yards deep to help in a scramble drill. I cud be wrong but to me it seems more likely that was the call than Bobby Wagner made a mental error. My opinion on Adams is that he is over valued because he cant live up to his value as a safety than isnt elite in coverage. He isnt a shut down corner or a pass rushing lb or de so he cant affect the defense as they can take advantage of him or stay away from him when they want to.
@keyton1928
@keyton1928 3 года назад
No defensive coordinator would rather give up a TD than a 15 yard run… like what? Lol. The rest of your take is pretty basic and at times under-educated, I see what you’re saying though. So far he hasn’t been worth what they’re giving to him, not entirely for the reasons you’re saying. However I think logically because we know how well he can play, a lot of that has to do with the entire defense being trash.

@keyton1928
@keyton1928 3 года назад
@@RomFrmPhalls if that’s the case they would need to communicate it perfectly, as neither safety is guarding the middle of the field. Is kind of odd for a defensive coordinator to want to let a player run a route where his defense by design isn’t going to be. Hence why it’s likely Bobby should’ve stayed with the receiver.

@@keyton1928 well idk that’s what he’s saying but If you watch you can see dj reed no where near deebo so bobby helps and he knows his safety over but if he doesn’t drop down deebo is a great playmaker who could score I like what he did

@keyton1928 3 года назад
@@RomFrmPhalls could’ve been the play call. But no way you can like how that play turned out. Ball literally hit the offensive player in the hands for a wide open score. A great defensive play is the only reason it wasn’t 6. Most defenses don’t run their defense on the hope great plays have to happen in order to work.

The truth is and always has been, that Pete Carroll can't coach. His secret to success is performance enhancing drugs. That why he sucked as the Patriots coach, but when he went to USC, he understood that if he had PED's for his team, he could actually win because he knows he is not much of a strategist or decision maker. The Seahawks have been using a loophole in the NFLPA union guidelines to get the whole team jacked up on PED's. The collective bargaining agreement states that if a player gets caught with PED's, due to medical privacy laws, do not have to say which drug is was. That mean any player who fails a drug test can claim any drug they want, like marijuana, adderol, whatever was the cause of the failed test. This not only allows players plausible deniability, but allows NFL players to use any performance enhancing drugs they want, and if they are stupid enough to get caught, can claim it was marijuana, just like David Irving did. I know Irving was caught with PED's and lied about it... Now that all NFL teams use this loophole, you never hear of players using PED's anymore. It's always some "excuse drug" or recreational drug...
