Jay Shetty is a spiritual influencer on social media. In this episode of Authentic or Charlatan, we analyze Jay Shetty's new course: Live Your Passion, Build an Income where prospective students can learn how to live their purpose, do meaningful work, and earn an income.
Nicole Arbour's expose video: • Jay Shetty Is Full Of ...
I personally dislike these ‘turning your passion into income’ courses that are so prevalent on social media today. Most give students the false hope that running a profitable business is as simple as doing something you’re passionate about.
I’m here to push back because I really dislike the way that these courses and these business opportunities are sold. Using super vague and empty concepts like “pursue your passion” or “find your purpose” cast the widest audience net and are incredibly easy to sell, which is why these gurus do so well. But I feel like they aren’t honest with prospective customers.
The course costs $997 and includes many bonuses, weekly coaching sessions, and Q&A with Jay himself. I’m sure the course delivers what is promised. There’s no doubt that Jay can create a good product. It’s probably a great course for a specific group of people. And some people have probably succeeded from the course.
This Authentic or Charlatan series focuses more on the person selling as opposed to the course so let’s analyze Jay for a minute. He left the corporate world to become a monk for three years. Following his time as a monk, he came back to civilization and became a social media guru. He immediately gained a huge following. He’s really well spoken, articulates his points well, he’s good looking, and makes entertaining skits on RU-vid to help educate his viewers on shifting perspectives on common real world experiences.
I have to give a shout out to Nicole Arbor for absolutely destroying Jay in this video. I don’t want to steal any of her excellent research so I’ll leave the link for you in the description. But she essentially found out that Jay was stealing quotes from other people and passing them off as his own. And there’s also an instance of him stealing from a poem for the script of one of his videos without giving credit.
Those of you looking to quit a job to join a passion to profit course, you may find that what you were passionate about is actually a very small percentage of your day-to-day work. Payroll, marketing, selling potential clients, dealing with insurance for your employees, working twice as many hours as you were before, converting your social media into a sales funnel, selling your friends or family, managing inventory, the list goes on.
Hobby’s are fun because there’s no expectations, no selling, and no reliance on an income. Everything changes when that hobby now needs to generate enough money to help support you.

A lot of gurus on social media are gray area charlatans. Also, humans can be very nuanced. Sometimes they're frauds and sometimes they're genuine people looking to help. My goal isn't to come out and call people like Jay scammers or charlatans. I want to teach people how to notice how they sell and market their products. It's up to you whether you want to follow guys like him or not. To me - he's a charlatan for stealing other people's material and keeping it as his own, but he's also out to "help" the world. And some of his content is legitimately good. He can be both. On the flipside, there are gurus who are absolutely fraudsters and I'll call it as I see it. Regarding Kevo: it's not a smart long term play to face legal action and copyright strikes with every video I do. Remember: this kind of information can't get out there if the videos are shut down. It makes no sense to come out and call people scammers if there's no actual proof. It's defamatory and leaves me open to legal action.

I remember reading Think Like A Monk because I was so frustrated by having no control over my emotions (constantly going back to a person who hurt me, had a breakup, had a fallout with some friends and pandemic anxiety). Talking about the book only, I think there's a certain problem with us consumers. Due to the fact that the internet gives us everything on a platter, we end up either completely believing something or completely rejecting it. The book itself has some very good activities to help you discover your true emotions (I used to deny a lot of things and once I started letting my thoughts flow, I realised all the emotions that i felt such as hatred, envy, anger and others that I never really confronted). Also, there's some good teachings from the Gita (I'm an atheist). Before I started the book, I was already sure with the "critically judge everything, keep what you believe is rational, dismiss what you believe isn't" and that helped quite a lot. Other than that, I probably wouldn't have read the book had I known of this course that clearly sounds like a greedy scam, but again, not everything is bad.

Technically all these things they teach are already out there- 😊 just expounding on truths preached by Jesus Christ or Confucius like “do not do unto others what you dont want others to do unto u “ or, filial, piety and humaness etc. Each can have his/her own personal religion creating our own beliefs incorporated from life experiences but as humans, our weakness is feeling u need to belong to a certain group-those people who seem to have more that is why most become like a flock of sheep following anyone blindly to belong to a community, to be “in” and follow new age beliefs that are actualky just “fads”. Interesting example is this manifestation thing, is it not like praying to pray for something and let God do the rest? Yet most pay thousands to be coached by these gurus

When I was in Malaysia, I saw the very same orange monk outfit he wears sold for $90 at some temple. Whoever thinks that sitting in some monastery or on a mountain for 3 years actually suddenly brings wisdom and true spirituality to a person, is confused. It's a life-long process. The mere fact that he uses the fact that he was there for (only) 3 years to validate himself is an indication that he thinks that it's that simple to get the guru label. Just go hang out on a mountain without a real job and real life responsibilities and then come out and strike gold? Lol as someone who spent 2 decades on daily spiritual growth starting from scientific esoteric methods and not stealing quotes from others ,I'm laughing at this clown. He's a scammer who should really just market himself as a marketer, not a monk. He's a joke. BTW I'm also a marketer. But I don't steal people's quotes nor do I call myself a guru even though my level of spiritual science knowledge (actual science behind it all) is several times greater than his.

Man i wish more people heard this. Myself included when I was younger. I left highschool and go a great salary job at 19 in the toronto office of a global digital marketing company. I had a great boss, sick days and (soon to be insurance). But as more offers came in and one which allowed me to start my own business I went that route - thinking I enjoy what I do, I'm good at it, and it'll be my own. 8 years later, i've got a ton of experience and the humility to say I would've been better off to have kept my first job. If you enjoy what you do, don't try and be the boss. God i wish i saw this.

You'll never be spiritual if you still don't accept that materialism is also part of that very same spirituality. Study astrology at the very least to understand how if you don't include one of the 4 basic elements (air, fire, earth, water) in your lifestyle, you won't ever get "spiritual". Spirituality requires acceptance of all 4.

I repeat NONE of what he learned from it is he applying to his job as a speaker. He is just blatantly, so cunningly and viciously using the modern day BS Self help industry philosophies and telling and embracing it in such a calm, serene way that audiences think it actually works cuz in times of so much mental struggles and anxiety, no one preaches even a sentence without swearing.... And guess what from that calmness comes from??? His MONK TRAINING... And is he sharing it? NO!! 🤦🤦🙅🤷

I created a successful business doing what I love and here's how I did it. First, I waited 6 years in a "job", I spent this time thinking it through and making sure my passion wouldn't wain. Then I started the business part-time and worked weekends for 3 years. And then finally I let go of everything, reduced my outgoings to as low as possible, and went for it. Fast forward one year and I work way more than a regular job, but I still love it, and I know I'll love doing it for the rest of my time here on planet earth. What do I do? I create authentic desi Indian cuisine (I'm white British, not Indian, this was and still is a hurdle), I have a shop, a deli, and sell out at farmers' markets. Next up, cooking courses, a cookbook, and a blog. No restaurant for me though, just supper clubs and pop-ups, they're more fun and less of a financial burden.

I really love your last bit about how being an entrepreneur is a lot of work and the fun part of your passion usually comes very short. Doesn't mean you must never do it, but it's so cool to see someone just be realistic about it so people stop trying to burn the candle at both ends. I think there's also something very grounding in openly saying that it's okay not to be an entrepreneur, because in this high pace hustle society we bring our kids up, that's rarely ever a state of mind you hear of.

This was a well said post. The motivational stuff has its place on social media and life in general for sure, but the heart of a person won’t be changed by no amount of positive affirmations and self talk...which is why it is required to do these actions and more over and over again with no target in sight. The part about running your own business was way on point. Right now, we need to encourage people to work and find work, not chase after dreams underscored by research that not been completed, a plan not derived, and an unwillingness to embrace the failure that will lead you to success.

The motivational stuff can be - and is - used as brainwashing, self brainwashing or put on you by someone else to keep you on a losing path. with constant barraging of empty nonsense, pictures of bmw's and so forth. amway and other MLM network branches employed that to great success in destroying countless lives in pursuit of hopeless business endeavors, by utilizing basically cult tactics, motivational speeches, getting the victims to spend hundreds of dollars per month on motivational("educational") audio cassettes PER MONTH to brainwash themselves, told to make themselves a vision board with their dream cars and such they will buy when they get to the promised land of success which never comes, constantly instilling the idea that only losers quit and you're only a loser if you quit (if you quit giving the upline money that is). like, sometimes one needs to just stop and take a step back and consider if their business plan that depends them getting 40 million in sales in a year from selling a secondhand product is actually feasible or not instead of browsing all night billionaire mindset quotes from instagram and boasting that you'll buy a pagani by the end of the year.

I've always felt that if you want to turn your hobby or "passion" into a business, you should consider if it's the business side of things you enjoy, or the actual hobby. Because once you turn that into a business, you'll get to do much less of that thing in most circumstances, and have to focus way more on the business aspect if you want it to succeed. I think a lot successful business owners have companies covering a wide variety of subjects because it's more the "business" they enjoy, not so much the thing the business is about. You do need to have a good understanding of the "thing" that the business is based on for it to work, but you don't necessarily need to love it like it's your favorite hobby.

Great video. I really like your style of commentary: constructive and not personal or petty. I'm not a fan either of self-help gurus and the pedestal culture that surrounds them, and can see why these gurus become successful because they are essentially superb marketeers.

Thanks. I had a sort of disagreement with a RU-vidr less than a week ago that said you can't balance working your regular job while building a business outside of it. He kinda said that you have to do one or the other. I disagree. I plan to self-publish my fiction books. I need my current job to pay for the Copyrights, book covers, and copier paper when I print off my drafts for editing. Cost is associated with that.

Thank you for sharing your opinion Spencer. Really like what you said about a hobby or passion turned into a business. I do photography as a hobby and I'm never turning it into a business because that puts pressure on creating 'incredible sell-able photographs'. Same with art; Are you going to feel the same way about making art when you have a deadline, need to sell it, need to market it, create a brand around it, run a webshop for it? I doubt it gives the same feeling that it used to give when you started.

everything changes when you have to pay the bills. Some activities should always stay hobbies IMO. I also think hobbies act as a healthy escape from the main income producing career.

I will never understand paying someone to give you advice that’s all over the internet for free. There are so many desperate ppl down and out who keep these ppl living luxury lifestyles and it’s very sad. I love how spencer said the reality of truly changing your mindset and life takes years with consistency and therapy. YES! This is the reality of changing. Ppl who are able to “instantly change” are very far and few in between. All this stuff does is give you temporary validation and motivation. There are no shortcuts in the road to healing and becoming the best version of yourself.

I was only 13 when I started this entire self improvement I actually worked out everyday learned alot almost skipped one class and had a pretty good routine and life, I stopped at 15 ever since then I've just been depressed, failed to skip class, stopped working out and am not learning much and not really reading anything anymore, might seem like self improvement had actually helped me, I feel free but miserable now, so decide for yourself which one is better... haven't decided for myself yet cuz I'm still too young to make the right decision.

Agree, it's nice he's making people feel good....though toxic positivity is a thing. But something seemed odd to me about him going from monk to millionaire..... seems counter to monk teachings. Especially selling an $1,000 course during a global recession seems wrong but he's likely targeting people working in well paying jobs with "golden handcuffs" to buy his course on starting their own business (very much a first world problem).

Nice balanced approach. Thanks. I just sat through Jay Shetty's 2021 restart videos, and while the first three were good, I could feel the pitch for his Genius Community coming the entire time. $40+ a month? Who can afford to pay someone that much money for what is essentially hand-holding for adults. I don't think he is the villain some people make him out to be, but I am saddened by how transparent the whole thing is.

You are 100% right, shifting core beliefs takes YEARS on therapy. People think they can change their psychological discomfort by listening to BS delivered by gurus. I guess its easier for the people cos listening to the BS does not require any work, self reflection and going through the psycho pain. A guru tells them they are great for a 1000 bucks and they feel better people in instant. The customers of the gurus are probably vulnerable narcissists of some sort. Thank you for the video Spencer.
