Is Leonard Too Big For The Canoe? 4K

Well Leonard, my Giant St. Bernard is 1 year old now! He is close to 180 pounds already! Recently I attempted to bring Leonard in my canoe for the first time this season. It had been over 6 months, and 100 pounds ago since Leonard had been afloat! Well he wasn't having it!! I quickly gave in and vowed to try again when it was a little warmer weather. This trip is to do some camping, and fishing, but mostly a quest to find out if I can get him back in the canoe, or is Leonard really too big for my canoe??

You are doing great! Take a small step and put him in the front connuie. Just don't be scared because he can tell that you are scared. Again put him in the front of the connie! Sincerely! R.S.V.

Hey Darren, perhaps consider a rigid bottom inflatable rather than an aluminum boat? Probably more weight capacity, more stability, lighter and will still get up on plane.

That would probably be a good way to go! So nice and light. I will be honest, though I would worry about him puncturing the inflatable part with his clause. He popped to inflatables mattresses already! The really thick kind too! L O L

Just an idea. But some type of padding on each side of him to force him to sit in the middle of the canoe?

I thought of that! It would definitely help. The only thing is the weight of his head. I have to be on guard for it all the time. 130 pounds is plenty big!! That’s a big girl for sure! I just love giant dogs. Those big gentle Giants. It’s just a different relationship in my experience. I love all dogs, but I have a special spot in my heart for the giant ones for sure, thank you so much for watching!

Just take it too slow with him and this is why teaching him as a baby, dog so he can get used to it and working with him is the best and slowly, if he's older it takes him, longer to get used to it because you did not train him, as a baby, dog. He can also tell when you are nervous! If you are nervous that can give him an unsecured feeling as well. I have learned that with my dog and they can tell if you are sick or not. Take him with you and whatever boat you have. Remember pets, can tell our feelings about ourselves. Our medical conditions and not when we are doing well our pets can tell if we are okay or near death. Why am I telling you this because is the same way with the boat and taking them with you? Thank you so much for your response! That is great advice! If you look in my earlier videos, you will see that I had him in a canoe at nine weeks old. The problem is in this climate, there is ice on the lakes for at least five months of the year so I couldn’t put him in any sort of craft through that period of time! But you are absolutely right. I was nervous and I think he definitely picked up on it. I think I have an idea that might solve this and I will keep you all posted! Thank you very much for watching!
